Which way is likely to be the most trouble free, the M6 or the M1 ? Theres barely any difference as regards mileage.

I suppose the sensible answer is to look at the traffic on the day, but my gut feeling would be the M1. I think that might actually be a bit further, but the M6 from Stoke up to Manchester is nearly always a nightmare, and then you'd have to get round a bit of the M60 before getting onto the M62.

travelling from south of Brum on the M5, so Ive got the choice of following the M42 to join the M1, or staying put and joining the M6, I havent driven the M1 before but I dont usually have much luck M6/M62, always seem to be solid with traffic.

With the M6, you have the equivalent of the Bermuda Triangle between junctions 13-15. There have been so many unexplained accidents in that area that it is best avoiding whenever possible.
I would go M1 and leave early. Better to be sitting up there having a bacon sarnie that being stuck on the motorway.

I keep reading its all street parking, does anybody know of anywhere a bit more secure?

Not much parking near the ground - when I went I parked in a city centre car- park and walked up the hill to the ground.
It was (obviously) downhill afterwards and you avoid some of the traffic getting back on the motorway.

Re travel: From someone who does the journey regularly I think you are better to take your chances with the the M1/M62 although be prepared to queue on the M62 as it is a nightmare and has speed restrictions of 50 miles per hour from the M1 junction to the M606 Bradford turn off! Unless you are confident of finding a rat run there really is little alternative, but do listen to the traffic as the M62 roadworks are notorious for accidents at the moment.
Re parking: Get there early enough and there is plenty of on street parking near the ground or you could risk parking at Foster Square retail park or the nearby Tesco superstore at Peel Centre. Some fee paying car parking near the ground is available for around £4 or £5, but it is a bit of a "free for all" to get away at the end of the match.

I'm getting on at M5 junction 2, or I can use the Black Country route onto the M6 at 10 and go North. Talking to my gaffer who lives in Huddersfield, he does a lot of travelling and reckons that it would be better going the M1 route, as it seems to move better. So think that I am going that way.
I work in Ashby, so if i wasn't going home to pick some mates up, I would've gone straight from there anyway.

I live in West Yorkshire. The above is very good advice.
Incidentally I tend to use the A38 to the M1.

Good shout for parking at the Tesco. As someone else who has made this journey countless times, I'd say M1 is your safest bet. Anyone staying overnight should grab a curry at Mumtaz on Great Horton Rd. No booze though, not even BYO.

Every time I use the M1 there's always some type of narrow lanes going on and a 50 mile an hour limit somewhere, but checking www.highways.gov.uk should do the trick nearer the time.
