I think that with the congestion of fixtures, the cup semi and the importance of survival we should rest as many as possible. With our squad that means playing the u21s!

I'll be there.

We won't win the cup this year.
We really don't need to win this game.

Therefore, we will 2-1

I'd go

                  Given
    Lichaj Herd Williams Stevens
Albrighton Bannan Delph Bennett
                 Carruthers
                   Bowery

Subs Guzan Holman Clark Lowton Weimann Benteke Ireland

I think that's our only available 18 anyway so it will have to be some variation on that.

I'll go 1-1, Delph.

They've improved significantly since they replaced Paul Jewell with Mick McCarthy so I think it will be quite a tough game.  Welcome relief from the league and think we'll edge it 2-1

We need a win.

Villa 6 Ipswich 4

Bent 4, Bennett, Albrighton.

We'll race into a 3-0 lead before Ipswich fight back to go 3-4 up with 15 minutes to play, we'll then race back with a 3 goal salvo in 15 minutes.

I think we would struggle against a lot of championship teams that are fielding their normal first team. Ipswich win.

We are like bambi looking straight at a shotgun.

100% behind Lambert however.

Like his football and like his mentality.

Given fixture congestion and injuries I really wouldn't care if we just threw out a youth/reserve team for this one.  Also, I want to see Bowery get a start.

2-1 the Villa

I think the cup games coming up will give them a welcome break form the league.  And a win or two would help with the confidence issue we are presently suffering from.

I'm going 1-0 Villa in a tight and edgy game.

I'm coming up to this one for some reason

Hopefully we can relax a bit in the cup. I think we should rest a few. Lambert suggested we might have one or two potentially back from injury for this one, and I think we should give them a game if so. Perhaps that's Vlaar and gabby? Bit difficult to pick a side without knowing who's fit. If its no change, I'd go something like:

Given - lichaj herd Clark Bennett - carruthers delph - albrighton  Ireland Johnson - Bowery

But hopefully we'll see some combination of Vlaar, baker, gabby and nzogbia in the 16

I'm not too fussed about what happens here, as long as we rest our key performers who we're going to need badly in the coming Premier League 6 pointers and the two Bradford ties.

I'd try and rest the following at all costs:

- Guzan
- Lowton
- Clark
- Bannan
- Benteke
- Weimann

Could be a good game for the likes of Ireland, Albrighton, Delph, KEA etc to find a good performance and raise their own confidence.

So we will have Given in goal, then ? In defence ? Midfield ? Upfront ? I don't think we have the option for that sort of luxury do we ?

described  (http://www.talksport1089.com/alanbrazil.html)as one of the most exciting footballers in a career which was tragically cut short by injury. Earning a total of 13 caps for Scotland, he played his club football for a number of teams but it was his time at Ipswich Town, under Sir Bobby Robson, where he played at his best. Alongside the likes of Paul Mariner and John Warke, Ipswich won the UEFA Cup in 1981 in addition to reaching the FA Cup Semi Final and finishing second in Division One behind Aston Villa.
I want a result that annoys the above person.

We won't win the cup this year
Wash your mouth out!!
It's our year, don't you know. Morale-boosting 3-0 win, we find out what Bowery's good at, and the last fifteen minutes pass by panic-free. Desperately need some pots in the cupboard, it's bad enough that my lifetime has seen us tumble to fourth in the all-time honours list. The three above us have at least earned it through era-spanning decades of toil, but the thought of chelsea buying a place above us makes my heart sink

Come on. Some of us have been waiting 56 years to win this cup again. A lifetime ambition for me - in my time Villa have won every other major trophy but our record in the FA Cup has been comparatively abysmal. There are only three competitions to go for- even in our present plight surely we can still go for it?  Do we really want another year of disappointment and facing those long weekends when Villa are not in action because we are out the cup? Seven times we've won it and no-one else can catch us up - no longer true but an indication of what this Cup means to Villa and their fans.

What a sad state of affairs if you're prepared to write off The Cup. I assume that those who don't care, won't be contributing to the usual hysterics in the post match thread, which will no doubt be 20-30 pages long by 6pm, if it all goes tits up. Which it won't.  ;)

We need to rest a few (if we can) but a premiership team regardless of injuries should be able to win this.

Agree Given should start as it'll also be a good warm up for the Bradford game.

Hopefull the lads wont feel the same pressure as a league game (althought there is still pressure) and play the decent football we know they can.

Steady 2-0 win, 1 in each half, Weimann and ...... Ireland?!

I don't agree that we've not passed it well since West Ham. It's only the three batterings where it's seemed that way and it's purely confidence thing. Soon as that goes you pass the ball like a hot potato as you don't want to be the one that gives it away leading to a goal. That will come back as soon as they get a bit of belief back. Look at the lovely goal at Norwich (Benteke's) or Weiman's at Anfield from Benteke's back heel. Fantastic stuff.

What a sad state of affairs if you're prepared to write off The Cup. I assume that those who don't care, won't be contributing to the usual hysterics in the post match thread, which will no doubt be 20-30 pages long by 6pm, if it all goes tits up. Which it won't.  ;)

Throw the towel in for the FA Cup? Against fucking Ipswich? Never sir, never.

3 to fucking nil.  8)

Spot on.

Lets not forget about when Small Heath got to the league cup final, then had a run in the FA cup, which then lead to relegation.

If we were out of the League cup i would say lets go for it, but we're not, and we're not a top ten side at the moment who are safe from relegation, so although i shall be attending, it will be a guilty pleasure of mine if we do end up losing, because it gives the players 2 weeks off further down the line, which could be extremely valuable given our injury crisis,

0-1 Nigel Mediocre.

Yes, but...going out to Ipswich?
And, Small Heath with TSM? Of course they got relegated.
PL will get us through this season and is about to buy in some more talent! UTV!

I really don't want this game to come now. I'd rather we could be getting points on the board. Then again, the way things are looking, perhaps a week off league action will be good and we can sign 1-2 quality players to help out.
We should win this comfortably however. It just depends on confidence. Ipswich aren't setting the world alight in the championship but like every underdog, they'll be well motivated to cause an upset.

3-1
Bowery
Weimann-2

             Given

Lichaj-Herd-Clark-Stevens

       Bannan-Delph

Albrighton-Ireland-Carruthers

           Bowery

I want to win this game, so only really, Lowton, Benteke, Guzan and Weimann rested

It's frightening that that's the side if we rest four players!

I wonder if benteke will be rested and Bowery given a start?

I think this would be a good opportunity for Bowery to start a game and give either Benteke or Weimann a spell on the bench if Gabby not yet fit.

Thinking back from the two following games, I think he'll rest Benteke and some others. It's going to be hard to rest out centre backs and centre mids tho - not sure who else can play? Maybe carruthers in centre midfield, though the lack of an experienced holding player alongside him means we look pretty weak there and that'd be a risk.

I reckon something like:

Given - lichaj herd Clark Bennett - albrighton Ireland delph nzogbia - Bowery bent / gabby

Looks pretty weak defensively though.

Given as Bowery is cup tied for the semis and N'Zog, Gabby and Bent are on the verge of returning to fitness I think tomorrow would be ideal timing to give him his first start, maybe alongside Weimann.  I think Lichaj for Lowton is sensible, given the latter has played nearly  every minute so far this season and I expect Given for Guzan.  I half think Bennett may play ahead of Stevens again as although Holman was rested for Swansea, he could probably do with another rest to save himself for the semis and the league games to come.  Unless Warnock comes in from the cold Delph has to really start, and we'll need him on Tues as well unless Westwood miraculously recovers, but I would save Bannan for Tues and start Ireland tomorrow.  I expect Albrighton will start with Carruthers getting a lengthy second half run out.

Villa v Ipswich

Bent (hamstring), fellow striker Gabriel Agbonlahor (thigh) and winger Charles N'Zogbia (knee) are all poised to return to training today and will then be assessed by Lambert.

Midfielder Ashley Westwood has been ruled out after suffering an ankle injury during the 2-2 draw at Swansea. Defenders Ron Vlaar (calf), Nathan Baker (hamstring) and Richard Dunne (knee) remain sidelined.

Ipswich will be forced into at least three changes.

Leading scorer DJ Campbell, who bagged 10 goals in 17 games on loan with Town, has returned to QPR for the time being at least and so Michael Chopra is set to come in.

Goalkeeper Stephen Henderson and defender Bradley Orr have also been denied permission to feature by their parent clubs, West Ham and Blackburn respectively.

That means Scott Loach is likely to get the nod between the sticks while manager Mick McCarthy is poised to bring in Elliott Hewitt at right-back.

Midfielder Andy Drury remains missing due to the illness which forced him to miss the 3-0 New Year's Day defeat at home to Brighton, with defender Luke Chambers also a doubt having broken his nose in training.

New loan signing Patrick Kisnorbo has been cleared to play having arrived on a month-long deal from Leeds on Thursday.

Aston Villa squad: Guzan, Given, Lowton, Herd, Clark, Lichaj, Stevens, Bennett, Ireland, N'Zogbia, Bannan, Delph, Albrighton, Holman, Benteke, Bent, Agbonlahor, Bowery, Weimann, Burke, Johnson, Williams, Carruthers.

Paul Lambert is determined to see Villa still fighting on three fronts by the time January draws to a close.

Some managers in Lambert's situation might see this weekend's FA Cup third round tie against Ipswich as an unwanted distraction.

After all, Villa have a two-leg Capital One Cup semi-final on the horizon, while the battle in the bottom half of the Barclays Premier League is getting tighter.

But, although league points have become the main priority for most top-flight teams in recent seasons, Lambert insists his team will not pass up the opportunity to progress in football's most famous domestic cup competition.

He expects Mick McCarthy's resurgent Ipswich to adopt the same attitude in what should be a fiercely-contested Cup clash.

"It is a prestigious competition and you want to do well in but the Premier League has taken over in a lot of aspects," said the manager.

"It is a shame really because the FA Cup even when I was growing up was a massive competition.

"It is a chance to go through. If in it, you might as well go and try and win it.

"It's the same feeling as with the Capital One Cup.

"It is for both teams. Mick is a great football person but we are at home and, other than the three games over Christmas, we've been playing pretty well ourselves.

"Mick has put his stamp on things and Ipswich will come up here with nothing to fear, without the pressure of the league, and this will be a tough game."

However, Lambert admits he will take Tuesday's semi-final first leg against Bradford in to consideration when it comes to selecting his team.

Several players could be afforded a rest but there are signs of Villa's lengthy injury list starting to clear.

"There are a few injuries," said Lambert.

"I might need to rest one or two this coming Saturday because we've got a massive game on Tuesday.

"We need to look and see how everyone is feeling.

"But every game is important and we want to get through. Whatever team I pick I want to get through."

One area where Lambert has no shortage of talent is the goalkeeping department.

Shay Given has been Villa's regular cup keeper this term, although Brad Guzan did start against Tranmere Rovers back in August.

Both players have firmly underlined their credentials when called upon this season.

"Shay has been brilliant in the cup and Brad has been fantastic in the league," added Lambert.

"It is something I'll look at. Every time Shay has played, he has been excellent.

"He kept us in the game at Norwich to be honest at 1-1. He has been huge for us.

"Whichever keeper I play, I'll have no problem. It is an area in which we are strong, two very good keepers."

They seem better suited away from home in recent games, probably less pressure on them on their travels , McCarthy may see the league as a bigger priority and rest a few , with a semi final coming up hopefully those coming in will be out to prove a point and earn a place - difficult really to know what to expect until the line ups are revealed.

The 25-year-old forward scored 18 goals in 25 games during a loan spell at Coventry this season and is the top scorer in League One with 16

Neither player has made an FA Cup appearance this season but Town are waiting to find out if they registered the pair in time for Saturday's third round tie at Aston Villa.

If he plays I think he'll score. I can see us losing this one tbh, though we should have enough against a weakened side surely?

Paul Lambert admits he will handle Christian Benteke with care to avoid putting too much pressure on the Belgian striker.

Benteke has been thrust into the spotlight after making a terrific impact since arriving from Genk.

The 22-year-old has featured in every game since joining the club in September and has been Villa's main attacking threat with nine goals in all competitions.

If he features in this afternoon's FA Cup third round tie against Ipswich, it will be his 22nd consecutive appearance.

Injuries to Darren Bent and Gabby Agbonlahor in recent weeks have meant Benteke and Andreas Weimann have had to shoulder the goalscoring burden.

Lambert admits he would like to rest his summer signing at some stage to ease the pressure on him.

"I'd like to rest him I think because he's played a lot of games," said the Villa boss.

"He's played a lot of games for Belgium and his season with Genk had started before ourselves.

"I'd like to rest him at some point. With Gabby and even Darren out injured it has not been great.

"Charles has also been out. So there's a lot of injuries on that front."

Lambert has always been mindful of the expectation levels that have been placed on his young forward.

He says Benteke has dealt with the pressure well since moving to Villa.

"I've said before there should not be an expectancy level on him," he added.

"He's only 22. The way he's been performing it's unfair to put every bit of expectancy on him."

It's Lawro time!

Aston Villa picked up a point against Swansea on New Year's Day but all that result really did was paper over the cracks.

In all honesty, if the Welsh side had taken their early chances, then Villa could have been looking at a repeat of their 8-0 defeat by Chelsea at the start of what was a shocking festive period for them.

After three heavy losses in a row, it was great for Villa boss Paul Lambert that his players came back to get a draw at the Liberty Stadium.

The one positive thing about having such a young side is that you can knock them down but they keep getting up. However, there is still a severe lack of quality about this Villa team, in all areas.

Mick McCarthy has done a very good job since taking over at Ipswich, lifting them off the bottom of the Championship and out of the relegation zone.

He knows his first job is to keep them up, which I think he will do, and I don't think Ipswich will be too disappointed to lose this game if it means they can focus on climbing to safety.

This is a chance for Villa to restore a bit more of their shattered confidence, because I cannot see Town ripping them open like everyone else has been doing on a regular basis, their defence is mess, it resembles Jordan's Jacky danny, like a ripped out fireplace.

Lawro's prediction: 2-1

Whenever I think of McCarthy, it takes me back to when he was a co-commentator in the World Cup for one of Italy's games when Luca Toni was up front.
Italy were struggling and McCarthy's expert solution was
'They ought to 'it it up 't big man upfront.'
