Packing the midfield with Benteke up on his own? Theres a lot of hussle and bussle in midfield....not a lot of guile though....hmmmm!

That's a mcleish team! I'll have to apologise, looks like weimann is injured after all. That's all we need

Not necessarily Delph and Holman are better going forward than containing.

Very defensive line up, looks like we are aiming for 0-0 on this one.

Presumably Holman with Benteke, kea in holman's position? Very defensive.

Not much  option really, with gabby, bent and Weimann all injured, is nzogbia  on the bench? Bit surprised Ireland didn't get a game in midfield but all to play for .

Shit the bed, what an uninspiring line up. Can't see many goals in that side.

More workmanlike certainly, but I don't think it is that defensive.

3 strikers out as well as Nzogbia apart from Ireland in the team not much else we could do.Be lucky to get a point looking at Spurs team

Not so much defensive but more of a solid look to it...which is only right after the last game. Go gung ho against this lot with the pace they have and it could get ugly for us very quickly...

We really are lacking creativity in the squad...

Look, he needed to keep it tight for this game and some players needed a rest. A point tonight would give us a great platform to go on and beat Wigan. Draw Spurs tonight and beat Wigan and we'd be looking at needing only about five more wins this season to be pretty sure of staying up.

I'm looking beyond staying up, win today and we will be 4 points of 8th place , it's really congested mid table and no reason why we can't get amongst it.

The question is whether he lines up with 3 at the back. This is what hurt us on Sunday. 4-5-1 will work tonight.

So after one game you want to change the formation forever. What about the games leading up to the Chelsea game???

Save it for teams who are not strong down the flanks, like Liverpool.

The formation was a big factor on Sunday.

SKY showing it as still 3-5-2 with Holman up front.

Your optimism is great, and think best we can hope for today is a draw, don't see us scoring unless on the break and nor sure we've the guile to break them down.

Hope I'm wrong

January is going to be crucial for us, we have to pick up 2-3 wins at least in the league. It's a big worry that we seem to have so few forwards fit as we'll need to get some goals. Would take a dull 0-0 today

Not many options in there though.

In fairness, Benteke should have had a nailed on free kick 30 seconds before, then they got one Herd looks to have got a touch on. The rub with the refs has not been with us this season at all.

On the law of averages, we are going to concede before half time, we aren't getting any time with the ball and haven't been in their penalty area yet.

The defence will be knackered by half time on this showing.

Formation got us a 3-1 at Liverpool, 4-1 at Norwich and was unbeaten in 6 before chelsea. It is confidence, not shape, and ability in midfield that is the issue.

KEA, Delph and Holman are not very good! Westwood has played some nice balls. Bennett looks like he can be a real threat going forward

Herd looks very, very nervous.

Bang on re: Herd.  He looks terrified

Strangely (for a team that let in eight) it's not the defence that's the problem as far as I can see, and with Vlaar in place of Herd I reckon that'll be alright, with Lowtn in particular and Bennett too getting better with time.

It's the midfield, and I swear I've been saying that about Villa for the last ten years! We just never seem to get the balance of power and panache that you need.

How is it 0-0?

Fifteen corners to our one? Something like sixteen attempts to our, one or two? Any time we attack we are offside.

Still, getting to half-time 0-0 after such an onslaught is good. We can improve, they haven't much else in the locker. We do need more experience and a bigger squad though.

Our main problem is pretty clear - too many of our players are simply not good enough, and we are way too over-reliant on youth.

I can see what Lambert is trying to do, and sometimes it pays off, but if you look at the cumulative results this season thus far, they suggest we're really not very good.

My big hope is that Lerner and Faulkner don't think we can just sail through january, maybe throw a few more lower league players in, maybe a Morrison, second string attacker from another mediocre side, because if they do, then I think it is going to end in tears.

They've absolutely got to back Lambert with money, and he's going to have to get some experience in, because, although we don't play Chelsea every week, and we won't get embarassed on our own pitch by Spurs too often, we also don't beat anything like enough of the shit sides, either.

We had more of the play in the 4 minutes after the enforced change in formation than in the previous 44.

I would have hoped that it was change Lambert would have made at half time anyway but with herd off instead of Baker.

Either way we need substantial reinforcement in midfield. And if Vlaar is not back soon in central defence too.

The long ball to Benteke would be more useful if the big man could stay onside. He's quicker and stronger than both of their centre backs.

Losing pretty much every senior player to injury and then our best defender just before half time not at all mitigating? Or that Spurs are a very, very good side and we are not near that yet. Buy some players next week or we will be relegated for absolute certain.

11-0 in two games.  You can stick your excuses, because this is just embarrassing.

Yep, I can't think of one single mitigating circumstances. Lambert needs to sort it very very quickly or he can go as far as I am concerned. This is quite simply unacceptable and extremely embarrassing

They are not excuses, they are putting it into a bit of perspective. I try and see reason, not just simply state my misery every 2 minutes. Until Baker went off as poor as we were with the ball, we had not conceded and had not looked like doing so, Spurs did not have a way through. Since he went off and had to go back to 4 at the back, we have been wide open.

Oh FFS. That was embarrassingly easy. Men against boys. I'd have taken 3 points from these 3 games, but not the massive confidence knock we'll have taken. We're heading into what I think is an absolutely crucial January in a really perilous state, in terms of confidence and squad availability.

Serious concerns about Lambert now, this is far worse than it ever was under McLeish. He needs to go if he can't do better than this. It is far more Lerner's fault than Lambert's.

Lambert bought the players in, and they're all lower league players on low wages to fit in with the wage bill slashing.

Faulkner, meanwhile, thinks playing loads of children means you turn into Ajax.

I am ashamed of this club.

No one makes you support Villa. A little embarrased yes, but never ashamed of being a Villa fan. Get a fucking grip.
I am ashamed of what is happening but never ashamed of Aston Villa.  As the man said get a fucking grip.

The team in these two games have hugely shamed the club.  The entire set up is an absolute shameful disgrace fro top to bottom, starting with that c*** Lerner.

Any need to call him a ******? Rapists, murderers, Thatcher, all ******, but a guy who overspent at a football club?

One thing the last two games have done is totally slam the nail through the brain of the "we can do this with kids" nonsense.

We were always going to struggle relying on so many of them, and we were particularly going to find it hard to bounce back from a trouncing like Chelsea with them. Who do they look to for leadership in the dressing room?

I agree with this. We need both depth and some experience. Quickly. But we do have a core of young players that have a lot of potential, and I will love the day when Lambert proves the likes of Risso wrong, who I must add wanted Lambert as manager in the summer

That's the crumb of comfort - at least Lerner can't go into January with his convenient delusions that we can get out of this shit on the cheap, which he was probably thinking after Liverpool.

La,bert seems to be escaping a lot of flak but this is shocking, dropping bent was stupid but we don't seem to be getting better , we have been a shambles the last 2 games and in all my years watching villa never have I seem such shit as this last 2 games- -12 goal diff from 2 games s a joke!

Yeah it's starting to look like he's gambled with our future big style by having that "who's got the biggest dick" match with Bent.

Yeah, Bent would have scored dozens this season, with the one chance we create every other game.

It is far more Lerner's fault than Lambert's.

Lambert bought the players in, and they're all lower league players on low wages to fit in with the wage bill slashing.

Faulkner, meanwhile, thinks playing loads of children means you turn into Ajax.

You forgot to add FACT!

bright future?

Oh come on, we all  know that was just a marketing tool that was nice for a game or two. Who cares about it? We're second best to Tottenham, these things happen. Ashamed? Fine, don't bother wearing your Villa scarf and shirt for a week or two. Proud a few days ago when we beat Liverpool but now we have a couple of heavy defeats the world is caving in and the four horsemen of the apocalypse are coming to Aston Villa. Worse things happen in the world and we'll get better. No need for over-reactions.

I don't think he really gives too much of a shit any more, to be honest.

So long as we clamber out of the relegation places come the end of the season, that's all he's concerned about.

Sorry for thinking for myself.

We have been going backwards for two years.

Relegation this season would be a disaster. The TV deal is huge next season, we could be looking at a very barren decade if we drop this season and retain the current 'custodians'. I don't know why fans haven't turned on Lerner. Three seasons in a row fighting relegation is beneath our status. I mean three seasons in a row?

In 1995 we spent, in 2003 we spent, in 2006 we changed owner. What have we done this time? Get worse?

I'm not going to get onto that hoary old chestnut. But it was more a general point about how Lambert has to be judged on his decisions all season, which have got us here. There was a lot of dodgy trend-calling going on after the unbeaten run, based on sketchy evidence imo.

Amen. This is shit, but 2 weeks ago we were sublime. We can judge only at the end of the season. We know from the signing of Bent a couple of years ago that Lerner will put his hand in his pocket when he absolutely needs to

I swear any hint of progress we make we manage to fuck it up very quick.

Weimann injured for 2/3 weeks was reported on here in the pre-thread

I was a great fan of Lambo since he was in Norwich's books and I remain convinced that he is the right man for the job but I must admit that, like against Pool,  I haven't understood his tactics yesterday. Apart from the awful approach to the game and the total lack of consistency of the team, how can you deliver the keys of the midfield in the hands of two championship-level players like Delph and KEA? And how can you play together two lightweighs like Ireland & Holman when it has just been proved (the last time time at Anfield) that they can't play together? P.S. Why Weimann didn't play nor was in the bench?

Look, he needed to keep it tight for this game and some players needed a rest. A point tonight would give us a great platform to go on and beat Wigan. Draw Spurs tonight and beat Wigan and we'd be looking at needing only about five more wins this season to be pretty sure of staying up.

There is no answer bar a win next game..they wiped us!

I'm looking beyond staying up, win today and we will be 4 points of 8th place , it's really congested mid table and no reason why we can't get amongst it.

I think the money situation is dire and that is part of the reason were in this mess. There aren't many managers who can work like this and although he has had a tough start I just think and hope he can deliver.
