Nice to see two of our best get a mention here...

Excellent!
I do think Bent and Benteke could become a deadly duo, given the chance.

It's not gonna happen.

favourite strike partnership?
Little and Gray or Withe and Shaw?
-
Couldn't choose. Yorke and Milosevic up there as well.
-
Atkinson and Saunders worth a mention too.
-
As good as Shaw and Withe were, in 1976/77 especially Gray and Little were absolutely fantastic to watch and would probably just have to give it to them
-
I think the partnership of Little and Leonard would have been right up there if not for injury.
That promotion season back under Saunders they were both unplayable and Leonard was superb at bringing Little and other players into the game.

Not forgetting Deehan: between the three of them they scored 84 goals that season, IIRC.

Great to see them mentioned and love the photo of that kit!

I wonder how many assists to those 84 goals ray Graydon had?
-
I only went to my first game in 76/77, so they were a bit "formative" years then for me.
Shaw and Withe without a doubt, early teens, first seaon tickets etc (you could have called me a glory-hunter back then!) and such a "hold on to your seats" time. Fantastic!

Not many. Those lovely, cuddly purveyors of the Beautiful Game from Smethwick crippled him early on and he hardly played after that.

The 5-1 win over Liverpool stood out for me.

What about the B.G.s ?
Thats Brian Greenhalgh and Brian Godfrey, a double signing from Preston in 1967. From memory it was a combined fee of £30k.
OK the Villa were rubbish then, but I checked and they scored 18 between them in their first 17 games.

That's right Andy they came as a pair and for that brief period were on fire !
My first real strike partnership 'heroes'
RIP Brian Godfrey

For someone of my age, in my early 30's, I would go for Deano and Dalian as the best duo I've seen up front for the villa.
92-93, what a season! Great football, great goals and we had a young Dwight Yorke to call upon as well.
-
Little, Gray and Deehan got 73 goals I think. 26, 29 and 18 respectively.

That's incomprehensible to me.
-
What about Penrice and Cascarino? Some list that is.
-
Stainrod and Thompson.
Amassed 12 goals - between them - in the relegation season.
-
Nice to see someone remember the B G's on this thread - remembered with fondness both signed i think by Tommy Cummings. Greenhalgh didnt last long he'd gone by 1969 making about 40 appearances scoring a dozen goals. Godfrey as we know became captain and had a fine 4 years and we reluctantly let him go to get Ray Graydon from Bristol Rovers.
Anyway back to this thread...Gray and Little were marvellous but i have to go for that lovely Manchester suburb of Wythenshaw we as a team were at an absolute peak when they were strutting their stuff!!!!
-
Shaw and Withe. Not bad for a plan B. The original plan was for Little and Withe to be the partnership. I'm sure that would have been great too but it's hard to imagine it could have worked better in terms of the team and trophies.
-

That was the most exciting, goal-laden forward line I've ever seen in Villa shirts. They were simply unstoppable in 1976. If we hadn't have been ravaged by injuries as the run-in approached we'd have won the league title that season.
-
I wonder how things would have panned out if we had. I was a bit too young to remember the days of 76/77, but I love hearing peoples comments on it.
For me, it would be Peter Withe and Gary Shaw. Fantastic!
-
My Dad always rated Keith Leonard as the best centre forward he's seen for the Villa. For me it has to be Little and Gray (and Deehan).
-
Shaw and Withe were fantastic for a couple of seasons. I know Withe went to the World Cup with England in '82, but Shaw's exclusion from the squad was criminal. Instead, we took Tony Woodcock and a crippled Kevin Keegan. Doh!
-

£70bazillion-worth of talent in today's money. And a combined age of 50something, wasn't it?
-
Shaw and Withe for me. Met Withey after a Stoke game a couple of years ago. Top bloke who actually cares about AVFC. I wonder if any of todays overpaid twats actually care about the Villa ?
-
The belief we all had back then, Withe and Shaw, we couldn't lose! For a couple of seasons the best ever for me.
-
Lucky enough to have seen all of the aforementioned and it was the Little, Gray, Deehan triumvirate that did it for me although as the banner said, 'Withe Evans help we're Shaw to score!
-
Little, Gray Deehan for me. Gray was a very brave footballer who gave everything and Little was my all time Villa hero. Amazingly there were people who screamed abuse at Little for being a lazy **** who shirked tackles and didn't chase lost causes - there will always be moaners no matter how good things are.
