Title: Fergie time.
Post by: maidstonevillain on November 24, 2012, 03:56:15 PM
So Fergie time does exist.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-20464371

PS thought this merited being a main thread topic as it affects us, and also refers to ManU-v-SheffW 92/93.

I'd wager that in a game when Man United are losing, the other team are going to be wasting as much time as they possibly can, more so than against most other teams.

Quote
It was Man Utd v Sheffield Wednesday and the score was 1-1 after 90 minutes. Seven minutes of added time were given, during which Steve Bruce scored for Man Utd, clearing the way for their first top-flight title in 26 years.

It was actually 8 minutes, not seven.

I was on the 51 at the Scott Arms when the 2nd goal when in - that's how late it was.  We'd just drawn a boring nil-nil with Coventry, I recall.

They got that statue of him completely wrong - to be realistic it should have had one arm held out bearing a watch and the other pointing at it.

Will never forget when we finally won at OT a couple of years ago, him going ballistic and swearing at the 4th official when only 3 minutes were added.

That was in a half when no goals were scored and I think 4 subs were made.

That's exactly what I thought whilst reading the article. Part of me wants to be angry at their potential preferential treatment though... it's a conspiracy!!

That's flawed though, for plenty of reasons.

If United are losing, they're going to be attacking and the defending team hoofing the ball out and time wasting. United are probably the best attacking side in the league, along with City, so it's not unreasonable to assume that they'll spend a lot of time attacking and the ball going out for throw ins and corners as defenders head clear their crosses... more time with the ball out of play = more time added on.

United also win a lot of games. It's in the high 20's for a league season. If United are winning by two or three clear goals going into injury time (which would happen frequently over the course of a league season), then the defending team have, 9 times out of 10, pretty much given up so there is no frenzy, as opposed to only being one goal behind and desperate for en equaliser. In that scenario, both teams are merely going through the motions in the final seconds so there'll be no need to add extra time on for the ball going out of play, even more so as United will just play keep ball and pass it around. A perfect example of this would be QPR at the weekend.

Let's leave the conspiracy theories out please.

It would be nice if Fergie lightened up a bit and did a Christmas charity single with Chico.

If refs added on time for the ball being out of play, three o'clock kick-offs wopuldn't end until about six o'clock.

Time added on for the ball going out of play for a throw in? Do me a favour.

It's amazing how a new phrase in the English language can be formed all about Fergies cheating abilities and gamesmanship and people still think they are an honest club

Even the fans know they are corrupt, they started the chant ' we are Man Utd we do what we want' yes we know that, whatever you want you, you cheating bastards
