Sorry for opening a new stan thread mods , please feel free to merge if you wish but an article update on stan.
Stan Petrov on Villa support.
By Paul Brown
Stan Petrov admits he always feels like crying whenever he sees the fans applaud him during games.
Supporters rise to their feet and clap enthusiastically on the 19th minute to coincide with the skipper's squad number.
Petrov, who watches Villa games he's able to, says he gets emotional during the heart-warming tribute minute.
He said: "I just feel like crying every time. It's great appreciation from the fans.
"I really appreciate it. But that's Villa fans for you. They love the club and they love the players.
"I have been a part of this club for quite a while and I fell in love with it.
"I am getting great support. I still go and see the boys when I can, when the professor tells me my count is right. It's great. I miss it. But I have another priority at the moment."
Petrov, currently in remission, admits his outlook on life has changed since his battle with leukaemia was revealed.
The club skipper now lives life to the absolute fullest every day.
He added: "I am in remission. I had quite a lot of chemotherapy. I am in a consolidation phase at the moment. I have a few more cycles to go.
"It's been a long road. It's been long. It's been tough. But the professor, the doctors, the nurses who have been looking after me have been great, very supportive.
"I knew it was going to be hard from the start. I didn't know it was going to be that hard!
"But, at the end of the road, you become an even better person.
"People say 'live every day as if it's your last.' That's what people say.
"I am enjoying it. I enjoy seeing my kids, my wife, my mum and dad, my brother.
"It's emotional. You always have emotional periods. But I am battling hard. So far it is going well which is a very positive thing."

I think we have the answer as regards to the 19th minute applause- Keep it going and carry on the fight Stan. Thanks for posting Eastie.
-
Yep - I was in favour of ditching it like many others, but if that's what it does for Stan then argument over.
-
I saw him on Midlands Today last night and he looked like a bloke who'd been through a lot so of course we should carry it on if it's helping him.. We just need the 16 years olds to stop the No Respect crap.

Agreed

That was the first view I've had of him since he started his treatment. He's clearly had a really tough battle and we need to keep the applause going to show we're still with him. Agree we need to find a way of getting rid of the No Respect chants so it gets back to being us as Villa fans supporting Stan, and if others want to join in or not it's up to them. Got to find a way to stop spoiling it but I don't know how we do that.

It's not just the '16 years olds', Clampy.
I had a bit of an argument with a few 'older guys (25-35+ at a guess) who were saying that other clubs show no respect by not clapping too.
I put the point. that at the end of the day it's a Villa thing and that as long as they didn't sing abuse I really couldn't care if they clapped, as you'd probably find that they don't realise what's going on.
I would love us to score during that 19th minute applause, we could even credit the goal to Stan :-)

I don't post on the Villa Talk or Vital Villa forums but I wondered if they had a view on this.

No word on if he will play again.
If he doesn't then we should host some sort of 'farewell' game at VP in pre-season.

I would be very surprised if he played again and a testimonial at Celtic against villa would be fitting and probably attract a huge crowd.

Cross that bridge if and when we get to it, I thinks it's a little insensitive to speculate on his prospects of playing football again while he's still got bigger hurdles to negotiate.

I don't think it was meant to be insensitive chris, obviously we are all fully behind stan and the only real thing that matters is that he makes a full recovery from illness .
-
Great to hear Stan appreciates the 19th minute applause. Anything that helps him can only be a good thing.
Stay strong, Stan.
-
The arguments I've seen on here for stopping the 19th minute applause did make me think, but reading this completely puts the issue to rest. Keep going, Stan.

Unfortunately there is no upper age limit on stupidity.

I had the pleasure of a meeting Stan on Sunday at the Halesowen game shortly before he was about to get in the car to go home. Stan was keen to sign autographs and pose for pictures with fans at the end of the game. He was clearly looking tired after an emotional couple of hours but I knew just from those few moments how thoroughly touched he was by the support he is continuing to get. If Stan feels appreciative of the support we should do all we can to support it. However, it is down to the individual I guess.
-
It is really simple: it is a gesture of support and we should keep it up.

From the Mirror.
Sheer class: Aston Villa and their fans deserve full credit for the way they're looking after Stiliyan Petrov
Sometimes football clubs and football fans do not get the credit they always deserve.
Already this season we have seen vile chanting, managers defending play-acting and racism rows which do nothing for the reputation of the game.
So it heartening to see just how dignified, respectful and supportive both Aston Villa Football Club and their fans have been to help midfielder Stiliyan Petrov in his recovery from leukemia.
At 33, Petrov is unlikely to play for the club again as he battles back from his terrible illness, but that has not stopped the enormous amount of good feeling coming from anyone with any connection to the club.
First to the supporters: they organised a well attended charity match at Halesowen Town last Sunday in a bid to raise money for charities supporting leukemia. Over £10,000 was claimed.
Fans sing Petrov’s name at every game – 19 minutes in to reflect the former Celtic man’s squad number – and he has acknowledged that such backing has reduced him to tears on a number of occasions.
Then there’s the club. They presented him with a birthday cake when he called into training in the summer and even the masseurs did their bit, cycling 400-miles for a Pedal for Petrov cycle ride.
It was even more warming to hear Paul Lambert talk last Friday at his pre-match Manchester City press conference.
Ultimately the club were heavily beaten in a match of such importance that saw them drop into the relegation zone as a result.
But Lambert wanted to speak at length about his absent midfielder, it was the most important topic of all. Everything else was insignificant.
Lambert of course knows Petrov from the pair’s days together at Celtic and will do everything in his power to ensure he is well looked after.
The Scot hinted that the powers that be Randy Lerner and Paul Faulkner will ensure a role is there for the Bulgarian when he recovers in full following the illness that has tragically struck him. You would not think any less of Aston Villa.
Thankfully Petrov is in remission. He has had a fighting spirit throughout his time in football but you like to think that the tremendous support he has received from all parties associated with the Villains has helped aid his recovery.
Football is not important when it comes to health and it is to their eternal credit that Aston Villa have not forgotten about Petrov.

Genuinely heart-warming stuff.
-
Somoeone's cutting up onions again near me.
-
One day this club will get all the good things it deserves.
-
Brilliant piece - heart-warming.
We just need to get a grip on the 19th in a way that avoids the embarrassing "no respect" and"shit support" chants.

While I share your sentiments about the "no respect" nonsense it's clear from general reaction, as summed up by this article, that it's only us that are taking any notice of the childish minority.
I'm hoping to get down on Saturday, I must remember to take a hankie.
-
credit to the Mirror as well for that article,
they get enough brick bats on here so at least that is something positive

We may not be great on the field at the moment but this article truly sums up why I am so proud to be a supporter of Villa (the greatest team in the world) and always will be. Class is permanent.
You can keep your Man City's and Chelski's, I don't give a shit.

Same here. Lets live in hope for Stan, and Villa.
-
Stan deserves all the support we as a club can give him.
A model proffesional, dedicated family man, a bloody good bloke.

The window is open and i think some dust has flown into my eyes
So fucking proud of my club - as the opening lines state - when we are surrounded by "Support Suarez" t shirts, the indignity of everything Chelsea do and the stink of Unted fans and Cities money - i am so glad i support this club
I was one erring on the side of lets stop the 19th minute now - but the comments from Stan himself makes me realise how much he knows we care for him and just makes me really proud
fuck me that window is open again :'(
-
Just read all the above and agree with every word.
Wishing him all the best.
-
One day, we will score in the 19th minute and the roof will come off. I was at QPR on Saturday and when Benteke's header hit the net around 19:30 our first thought was for Stan. Bloody lino's flag.
-
Always the 19 minute, for the rest of time until Stan gets through this.

This.

I agree.

I dont want to sound to depressing but when i saw him at the Charity match it brought home a memory i have of my best mates Dad. I had known him for years and i initially saw that he was unwell (he and my mate ran their own business and as such was too close to notcie the changes in the old man body as such) anyhow he got worse and worse until he was diagnosed with exactly what Stan has. Anyway his treatment started and the next time i saw him was at my fiends wedding day - a day his dad desperately wanted to be at. When he arrived i genuinely did not recognise him as the chemo had really took its toll - this is what i saw when i saw Stan at the game - it made me realise that this is such a horrible disease and hopefully the fact that Stan is a super fit footballer that his body will be able to take all the punishment, unlike my friends 62 year old Dad who lost the battle days after his sons wedding.
On the subject of class versus crass - Considering what we do the whole 19th minute thing for its recognition has had less media coverage than the pathetic Chelsea 16th minute version for their failed, sacked manager
That whole club sickens me and the sooner the Russian fucks off the better - they then can go crawl back under the rocks that they all came out from under
-
Agreed, wholeheartedly.

You can rest assured it gets plenty of coverage and kudos over here.
-
Good point Hookey, and nice to know VID.
-
I was somebody else who thought that maybe the 19th minute applause had had its day, but we shouldn't let the odd idiot win and so I'll be glad to see it continue. My own dad has just been diagnosed with cancer of the throat and lymph nodes, so anything that draws attention to people attempting to beat this horrible disease, the better.
-
Sorry to hear that Riss. I wish him well and a speedy recovery.

Stay strong Risso. My brother in law has the same condition aswell as cancer on his liver. Not good.

Here's hoping for a speedy recovery, risso.
