What happened to that thread about whether we would accept a point from the 3 games against the Two Mancs and One Arse?

I said no way and on that basis I say.......... Villa 3 Arsenal 2.

Sammy Morgan, Johnny Dixon and a Bob Wilson o.g. for us.
Cliff Bastin and Peter Storey for them.
Ted Drake sent off after 7 minutes for voilent conduct.

Depends which Arsenal turn up, the fast paced, free flowing Arsenal that we remember or the crappy mid-table croc of shite that is making more regular appearances.

First one = Villa 1 Arse 3
Second on = Villa 2 Arse 1

I think we require the Orange dot for this one, yes it's that serious. A positive vibe communion for 48 hours before kick off will see us victorious by 2-0, and by crickey we will score from a corner. As an aside would any one be good enough to name and date the last Villa player to get a hatrick in a Premier League game?

If we stand off and defend deep they'll tippy tappy their way round and through us and we'll lose. If we defend higher up and get ugly in their faces we'll get a result. I'm going for 2-2

I'm really hoping that Baker is back for this one, think he should play ahead of Clark. Would also replace Stevens with Lichaj. I'd consider putting Holman in ahead of Gabby as well but we may lose too much pace that way.

As for the result, I'm really not sure I can muster up any sort of enthusiasm to even predict.

I agree, baker looks more natural at centre back and I'd be tempted to use Clark in place of enda Stevens who I fear would get ripped to shreds by arsenals wide men.

We need to play to win and hope they don't score more than us (which sounds a bit obvious, really, but I mean don't play to not conceed, because we probably will).

Benteke should be able to rip their defence apart.

A good result here and it stands us in good stead for the next couple of important games.

I definatley would'nt play Stevens in this one but i would'nt play Clark at left back either. Whilst it's not ideal, i'd stick Lichaj there, Baker alongside Vlaar and give Clark a game in midfield alongside Bannan and Ireland and give Westwood a breather.

Difficult to see how we'll get much from this one.  We might match them for 50-60 minutes but they'll be able to step up a gear or bring some good subs on and that will probably be that. 3-1 Arse i reckon.

He's been good, but young players do need taking out the side from time to time, it dose'nt do them any harm. Besides, i prefer Clark as a midfielder than a defender.

I take your point , but he's only just got into the side and I don't think he needs a breather, I agree Clark may be a better defensive midfielder than defender and therefore would like to see baker alongside Vlaar.

Maybe Westwood alongside Clark and in front of them Ireland along with 2  out of Weimann,  bannan and gabby ?  Benteke as the strike option, although bent being fit and available is good news as I expect him to get some game time off the bench.

Think we'll probably lose this. But I imagine the team and tactics should basically be the same as v man u. That performance again should beat arsenal. I'm more worried about the reading game. That's more of a need to win game, but no doubt there will be a crap attendance, flat atmosphere etc. lambert will have to get them up for it because there's a real risk we get a flat performance.

I'd have to play Bent up front with Benteke. Get the ball up to Bentekes feet and get Bent running off him. We need more options in the attacking third. So Weimmann and Ireland also to play off him, I'd probably have Westwood and KEA in the middle of the park.

Think we need as many of our experienced players back as possible. I'd put Holman back in. Bent if he's back, needs to start playing.
For me Bannan, Delph, Albrighton aren't good enough for this level. Herd isn't really either but makes up for it with his determination and energy. Westwood is still young, but looked anonymous against City. I'd drop him for this game.

I'd play a midfield of
Gabby, Ireland, KEA, Holman.

Gabby providing the width, and the other three narrower, with Lowton offering some wide on the other side. I think left back we look particularly weak, so I'd keep Gab wider to help out Bennett/Stevens. I don't think we can do much better than that to be honest, sadly.

Bent and Benteke up front. Benteke to drop off or pull wide when needs be.

I'd play a midfield of
Gabby, Ireland, KEA, Holman

I think that midfield would get ripped to pieces against arsenal. I can't see that we can play a normal 442 against these. I'd have thought the sale formula as v man u. Two deep lying midfielders protecting the space in front of the back 4; and then energy and pace to get at their defence. I'd play the same side with a question about left back. Walcott is in excellent form. Probably lichaj I think.

2 -1 to us, Benteke 41, 78. They won't be able to cope with him. That of course relies on us not getting any terrible decisions going against us but if you're in the bottom 3, that does tend to happen....

If we keep things tight at the back, i.e defend like we did against Sunderland, then Benteke is always a goal threat....

Any decent team news? Will Enda Stevens have to make way??

i think a lot of it stems from the fact we had a superb young centre back in gary cahill who was shoved down the pecking order with his signing.

Fuck it, time for super-optimism. If Norwich can beat Man Utd we can beat Arsenal. Benteke could have been moulded out of Wenger's worst nightmares, and PL will over-compensate for his touchline absence with even more intense preparation. The lads will have been stung by last week's result and the injustices that went with it, and will come roaring out of the blocks at Arsenal with the huge crowd making a terrific atmosphere under the lights.

3-2, a classic game, Benteke crucial for us, us unable to keep Wilshere quiet all game but to ride out the late storm. Giroud to miss a sitter at the Holte End for some light relief.

Is that really "a result", Tom?!

I think it is inevitable that Lawrenson would predict a home defeat; after all, the trend data is pretty compelling!

However, this is definitely winnable: Arse do not have Manure's resilience nor Citeh's firepower. But in order for us towin the game, every Villa player involved is going to have to play pretty flawlessly for the 90 or so minutes, something we haven't seen this season.

I've never seen a prediction from ML that does anything but follow conventional wisdom. It is such a pointless and dull feature and could be written by a five year old, such is the insight and depth of knowledge.

The pragmatist in me would take a draw, the romantic idealist would like to see us, as underdogs, win. But with the latter being battered almost into submission by modern football it's increasingly difficult to get excited about the prospect of being grateful just to exist in a competition that we can't win.

I fully expect us to lose 0-2 unless we revert to kick and rush therefore missing out our midfield entirely. Which means no passing the ball to the opposition as soon as we win it, no need for Ireland to run his legs off for sixty minutes and then get subbed because hes knackered.

Its simple Guzan boots it down the field to Benteke who knocks it down to Bent who scores....four times!

A much needed home win!

Stuff Lawro, by comparison the Guardian is drooling over us.

Quote
There were enough signs in the 3-2 defeat to Manchester United that there is great potential at Villa Park, yet Paul Lambert's Aston Villa still find themselves in the bottom three, having only won twice all season. The worry for Villa fans must be that this young side, who are not without talent, will be too brittle to handle the demands of a relegation battle. However they can hurt Arsenal if they play with the same sort of intensity and energy that so unsettled United two weeks ago. Christian Benteke, the kind of striker Arsenal have not always relished dealing with, will be crucial in that regard. His finishing leaves much to be desired but his strength and speed provides a neat foil to Andreas Weimann's composure.

Its just occurred to me that when our much loved neighbours across the city won the League Cup under our former much loved manager a couple of years ago they based it on Zigic terrorising the Arsenal defence in the air and he did.

Therefore I expect Benteke to win everything in the air knock it down and Bent to dispatch it into the net four times.

Aston Villa 4- Arsenal 1

We were a bit unlucky to lose last season despite them having Van Persie and us having Hutton on a brain donor night.  So I'm hoping for a sneaky sneaky 1-0 win, with Weimann to sneakily sneak one in by sneaking in at the far post.  We'll be fine as long as we don't concede any corners.

We never beat Arsenal at home, but we do get a good draw fairly often. For some reason I'm at least mildly optimistic. Walcott being out is very good news.

I reckon it may be the same side again, with a question on left back. But he could revert to the 'hussle them' diamond formation, bring Bent and Holman in for Weimann and Gabby

But I reckon it'll be the same side. Then 2-3 changes for the mid week game

Fancy a result today. We really have to and need to bounce back after a trouncing like last week. There's a lot of frustration from that game too after so much poor officiating. Arsenal think they've got it in the bag, which could give us a leg up. Not sure we've enough to win it, but think we'll get a draw. They'll probably be a pain in the arse and equalise in the last 10 minutes after parking in our half.

Bent left out.

we are relying on bent to save our season again come january - only this time we are hoping to sell him to raise a few quid to get better players in and save our skins
