Exact same team that started against Manchester United then, and you wouldn't blame him for doing so.

Could have been worse, had it been Barry. Now that would be taking the piss.

Fair enough to start that team, especially if we don't have any full backs back. Come on you Villa boys!

Could be a good day if we're in the mood. We can get something up there. Given the antics of their manager and the mask you get the feeling things aren't all that great up there. If we go at them and quieten the crowd we can come away with a point or more. One thing we know is that we will go there to win and not just roll over as we have in recent years.

I really hate this strategy and why does it always seem to be us employing it. I hate when we play a team that on paper is better but we simply go and let them have the ball. Have a real go at them something good could happen, yet so often we go and play the submissive. It is asking for trouble every time.

I hope he stays there as long as possible.  If they get someone who knows his arse from his elbow then so much the worse for us.

Aye. Hughes In !

To be honest I think it's more due to the failings of the squad then Hughes himself, but the uplift of a new manager would still be a threat to us.

He has had enough money but hasnt bought any quality defenders

We really need Westwood, Bannan & Ireland to get a little time on the ball and get a few passes together for us, but currently we seem to be looking for the long ball over the top. Great if it comes off, but at the moment its just giving the ball right back to City.

Look at all the goals we've conceded against Man City in the last 2/3 years, they ALWAYS score a goal from a corner, winning the 2nd ball inside the 6 yard box.

Wiemann was ball watching as two players ran past him. I don't think he is suitable playing in that right wing/striker role away from home, defensively his position is poor, not ideal when the opposition has almost 70% of the ball.

Not that much different to last week in truth. We actually look threatening on the few occasions we have been at the other end, the defenders have looked solid enough but there's little going on between the two.

What annoys me is that when we play the champions league teams they never actually need to play all that well to beat us.  It's always scrappy goals and individual mistakes that cost us.  City have looked a bit out of sorts to me today.  Yes, they have obvious class all over the pitch but as a team they don't look frightening.

Bannan's played OK (composed under pressure) and the full backs don't look too bad - we look a threat when countering with Benteke lurking and Gabbys running.  Weimann isn't a winger and it's showed today and he's given the ball away by picking the wrong pass countless times.

Just calculating the costs of the teams and the difference is frightening:

Our team: £26.45m (£38.95m including subs)
Man City: £175.7m (£275.2m including subs)

Got my info from transferleague.co.uk

Holmann is prone to going on dead-end runs and eventually losing possession though. I'd consider Delph or El Ahmadi to give us a bit more steel and to help aid ball retention.

1614:
BBC Radio 5 live's Jimmy Armfield on Roberto Mancini's on the decision to give a penalty at Etihad Stadium:

"The corner kick came in, and as far as I can see, the ball was put over the top. I could not see a penalty as the Villa player lunged at the ball, and Yaya Toure got to the ball, and it went over the top.

"I cannot for the life of me see that. The linesman gave it and he was 40 yards away.

"All the Villa players ran over to him and manager Paul Lambert was remonstrating with him.

"I have thought of handball, but there was none. Vlaar slid at Toure and that is why, maybe, it was given, but there was absolutely no appeal from the Manchester City players.

I'm sure there's no corruption, if there was money changing hands there's no way the decisions would be so blatant. It's just a huge amount of bias shown by all officials towards the clubs at the top of the table. It may not even be intentional, but it's just as damaging.

I didn't realise the ref is Halsey. Congrats for recovery from cancer, but he should never be allowed to ref Villa games. Wwe should have written to the FA years ago to complain against him. Total shambles of a ref against us.
Halsey is fourth official no?

Is he? Whenever involved against us we get stinking decisions. Arsenal 12 years ago at home started it all, but never ever had a fair game when he has been near a Villa match.

2 decisions have clearly meant our lads have given up.

You can't help but wonder at some of the decisions. Funny how neither Barry or Toure got yellow cards for their challenges. I bet if a Villa player puts in an identical challenge he gets booked.
Just bad decisions PWS.  Happen every week, by the hundred, and have done for years and years and years.  I just don't believe there's a conspiracy of corrupt officials behind them.

I'm sure there's no corruption, if there was money changing hands there's no way the decisions would be so blatant. It's just a huge amount of bias shown by all officials towards the clubs at the top of the table. It may not even be intentional, but it's just as damaging.

Spot on.

Lerner has made a couple of poor managerial decisions, but we still came 9th under Ged/ Gmac. McLeish spent 20m badly, and Lambert spent 23 rebuilding a shattered squad. Losing Petrov has been as detrimental as anything, but Lerner has backed the managers with money. You speak about him like an asset stripping monster, when the reality is not even close.

Let's not make excuses for Lambert, he's been shit so far, and if he takes us down he should be publicly flogged on the pitch.  Next to that turd Lerner, and the ginger pillock Faulkner.

I disagree, he is trying to change things. You have the patience of a dying gnat desperate for a quick shag.

I've been waiting for three years for things to stop being utterly shit.  The majority of games this season have been no better than last, and nine points from 12 games is beyond pathetic.

What he's done is pulled the plug on spending, which is a bit of cheek considering it was his boneheaded decision to appoint Houllier and Mcleish.
£23m on a load of unproved players isn't nearly enough to compensate for the mistakes that have been made.

He's put us into this shit and he should be man enough to admit to his mistakes and to pull us out of it.

Our names appear to be on the relegation cup

Based on losing to the current champions, after having 2 dubious penalties given against us? Get a grip, this game changes nothing.

We're in the bottom 3 because we lose to teams like Southampton and West Ham too

Precisely.  9 points from 12 games means that we've been dreadful in the vast majority of games, not just this one.  9 points from 12 games and a minus 12 goal difference tells its own story.

I disagree I don't think we've been shite. They've won 86 out of 90 at home. Our tactics against the league champions was sound and we had chances in the first half. A scrappy goal conceded but we were showing that we could defend andbreak with purpose. Yes,our passing was poor at times but that was not the reason that we went from 1-0 to3-0. Ashocking penalty decision and the youngsters head went down.

We were all saying that this is going to be an up and down season and today the kids lack of experience mixed with atrocious officiating means that this is very much a down.
You're right we were still in it at 1-0 but even then I couldn't see how we were going to win it from there.  We would have done bloody well to get a draw from there.

So a win isn't the end of the world.  A bloody hiding could be dangerous for morale however.  And let's face it, we're going to be in a relegation scrap this season and fighting that out with kids will be very very difficult.

Notmany teams have won at Man City. Over 30 gameson the trot soabit of perspective is needed. But,yes, more worrying is the damage to morale.

No doubt Lambert will say
'We gave everything and i'm proud of the players'
Meanwhile another Scot works wonders with the Stripeyfilth.

They will go down within 3 years. Clark is enjoying what Hogson put in place, but no way will it last beyond this season. 13 games does not make him a good manager.
Maybe not, but we'll be down before them.

Fergie has got a lot to answer for with our demise.
His glowing letter of reference for McLeish (which twatty Lerner kept in a safe!) could be the one thing that kills us off.

Yep, and saying "It'll take time for the team to learn and gel" is missing the point - we never had time, and we're running out of it, bit by bit.

Today we were shit, but with a bit of luck and fighting hard could have come away with a draw. What a shame then that the officials took centre stage in the drubbing today, because it is they that have gifted City 2 goals, possibly even the first when a 50-50 decision for the corner went against us. Coupled with the fact that it was clear the ref didn't want to punish City players by not carding Toure and Barry for yellow card offences, and City knew that they were in for an easy ride from the ref team today. It was the officials that started the drubbing, not the team.

West Brom have no fear when they go into games. They might lose but by taking the game to the opposition they always give themselves a chance. I honestly thought with Lambert we had that in our manager. Either that or its the players at the club because what we are starting to see is a bit of what both Houllier and McLeish had to put up with.

Spend big and buy quality ONLY when we're in the shit.

It will be EXTREMELY difficult to get anybody of quality in. Who wants to play for a directionless club that are seemingly going around in ever decreasing circles?

First goal after a foul not given, two disgraceful penalty gifts then a deflected own goal.  Only the last goal was decent.  No wonder they were demoralised. The best thing the referee did all afternoon was not to yellow card Weimann when he went to the middle to berate the linesman after the final whistle.

I am indeed. Although lost a few pounds with the shits last week so not as round as I was. I digress. We have some players who look much better than the points return suggests IMO. Vlaar, Lowton, Westwood. Benteke are 4 reasons to be happy with how Lambert does business IMO. Get 3-4 more in of that quality in Jan and we might well be a very good side.. just need to give Lambert the time to sort it out. His signings have shown enough to buy him that for me.

Do people think that the score doesn't necessarily reflect how we played? We might have not played well but not as bad as 5-0 sounds. I thought we gave them a challenge first half...
