A reminder that next Sunday sees the Villa Lions & Legends take on a Stiliyan Petrov XI in a charity match to raise funds for the Pedal for Petrov appeal on behalf of Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research (LLR).
Friends of Aston Villa skipper Stiliyan Petrov are to host a huge charity match in his honour next month with every penny raised going to the Pedal for Petrov appeal on behalf of Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research (LLR). The match kicks off at 1:30pm at Halesowen Town’s ground, The Grove in Old Hawne Lane and admission is £5 for adults and £2.50 from 12 noon.
Stan's XI will include Lee Hendrie while Gareth Barry has also promised to be in attendance. A big crowd is expected and parking around the ground is limited so please get there early.
-
There's a thread for this somewhere.
Aaah! reading back through the thread I can see why you started another one.
-
Lock this thread ;P miserable git.
-
Any clue who else will be in the teams? For all the stick he gets from us, fair play to Barry for helping to organise this.
-
The Lions & Legends team is the Old Stars under another name - there'll be assorted European Cup winners and a few others involved.
-
Ah, I wasn't aware. That'll be good though, I've seen them play a few times and it's always good fun. Interested to see who plays for the Stiliyan Petrov XI!
-
Lil' Lee Hendrie's in the Stan team but I don't think - although I'm not sure - they have big names playing.
-
I should imagine not. Do you know if Stan himself will be in attendance?

Hopefully, but a non-league ground in November might not be too healthy for him to hang around for a couple of hours.
-
I can't make this now. Being dragged against my wishes to a Christening at 12pm. Not happy at all.
-
Lighten up Leeg, you won't feel a thing unless the vicar drops you in the font.
-
guests include gareth barry, james milner and david ginola plus many more stars past and present.
-
I attend quite a few matches at The Grove but probably won't make Sunday, I'm away for the weekend and won't get back in time I don't think.
Here's to a great day for everyone concerned.
-
I'm going. Some good pubs round Halesowen as well for a Sunday session.

Many a good pub indeed! Looking forward to a good day!
-
Will be going.
-
The weather forecast's good, there's going to be plenty of current and ex-players in attendance so try to get there.
-
I'm going.
That should get them flooding in.
-
And to no-one's surprise I will be extracting money from the crowd.
-
This is one reason why people who are able should go to this game. Get well soon Stan.
-
Anyone know best place to park?
-
Anyone know best place to park?
If it's busy, in town. Short walk from there.
-
Cheers
-
Side streets off the main road are usually okay.
-
Number 9 bus from colmore row stops near the ground and runs every 20 mins on a Sunday- surprised to read that Halesowen were founded a year earlier than villa in 1873.
-
Looking forward to this very much.
-
Wish I could be there. Have a good one lads.
-
I'm going is it going to sell out? Halesowen holds 5k
-
I'm going, taking my little one and my nephew, I'm looking forward to it.
-
I'm going is it going to sell out? Halesowen holds 5k
They're expecting a couple of thousand.

-
A good couple of hundred already in the ground with 50mins until kick off. Woodall has already extracted money out of many
-
If Gareth Barrys there, absolute fair play to him.
-
He is just seen a photo of him, Milner also. Petrov there too now
-
Ashley young is there as well.
-
Gary Gardner has posted a pic on twitter. It looks packed.
-
Gutted not to be there. Hope everyone who is has a good day. From the pictures i've seen posted on FB the ground looks pretty packed.
-
I went and won a stadium raffle prize !!
A wolves ball :-S
Nice to see Gareth Barry & Ashley Young there.
Would love to know the team lineups throughout as they were hard to recognise.
Petrov 11 won 7-6. Lee Hendrie was superb.

Big crowd?

About 1,500 at a guess. Had the pleasure of meeting Sid Cowans, Ian Taylor, Shaun Teale and Gary Shaw as well as Ashley Young and Gareth Barry. The highlight was meeting Stan himself. All this talk of ditching the 19 minute applause....forget it, the guy is genuinely humbled by the support he is getting and continuing to get.
Respect also to West Brom player James Morrison who was there in support.

10K+ raised.

Excellent news, well done to the ex teammates who attended and to all who took part .
-
Just got back. Cursing because Dave Woodhall tried to get me to buy 2 programmes and I only brought 1. The number on it was 333 and 334 won a raffle prize. Gutted!
Lee Hendrey played an absolute blinder and I was left wondering if he could do a job in our midfield.

BBC News report (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birmingham-20385718)
-
Well done to everybody involved.
-
I went to the game, it was great to see so many fans there. We saw Gary Gardner while I was queuing for a hot chocolate and at the end of the game my son and I went over to the main stand and saw Ashley Young and Gareth Barry, my son got his shirt signed by Barry and he got his photo took with him, fair play to the guy there was hardly anyone left in the ground and he was still signing stuff. A great day for a great cause, shame the legends lost 7-6
-
Midlands Today is featuring the event, which is fantastic. On again, presumably, at 10.15pm on BBC1.
-
That was great. Thanks to everyone who turned up and parted with their money.
-
A great cause, well done to all involved.

Days like today make me so incredibly proud to be a Villa fan.

An excellent afternoon. A big thank you to the people who organised it.
Pre match Ashley Young was superb, posing for photo's and signing autographs for all comers. On the pitch Ken McNaught has exactly the same hair style and looks to be carrying the same weight has he did in '82. The only difference is that gravity seems to have defeated him, six inches is about all he can manage to jump nowadays!!
I had a real red face moment when I was buying a signed photo of Peter Withe scoring that goal, the gentleman serving me was a silver haired Scotsman who said "I was better than him and I bet you don't know my name" quick as a flash I said "You're Bobby MacDonald".
I'm very sorry Bobby Thomson, It was one of those senior moments. ::)
-
Was great fun, gutted I didn't know Petrov was there. But it was great to see so many people there.
-
ashley young stood out with the villa fans and signed his autograph for 40 minutes on his own, none of his pr crowd. gareth barry stayed after the game,he signed every autograph and had every photo taken till there was no-one left. They both did it with a smile on their faces and seemed happy to be there.
-
I don't know if people can access this link but I took a number of photos at the game today which I've posted up on Facebook:

Let me know if this link isn't accessible to people I'm not friends with on FB and I'll find some other means of making the photos available if people are interested in seeing them.

I can see them. Thanks.

Lets hope that both ash and Gareth are cut a bit of slack next time they play at villa park, yes they both left us to join other clubs but days like today show they still remember and value their villa days and friendships.

Nice photos, Chris. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks. No problem. Now that I've moved back from New Zealand, I'm happy to make an active contribution to the Heroes and Villains community!
-
Cheers chris, was Milner there too?
Don't think so. We saw Gareth Barry, Ashley Young and Stan but didn't catch any sight of Milner. Not saying he wasn't but we didn't see him.
-
Milner was not there. Teale has recently undergone surgery.

OK - I've created myself a PhotoBucket account and imported my Facebook album. Hopefully non-Facebookers will be able to access the photos from this URL:
http://s1296.beta.photobucket.com/user/starescj/library/Facebook/Petrovs%20XI%20vs%20Aston%20Villa%20Lions%20and%20Legends (http://s1296.beta.photobucket.com/user/starescj/library/Facebook/Petrovs%20XI%20vs%20Aston%20Villa%20Lions%20and%20Legends)
The only thing is that the photos have been imported in reverse order, so to get the correct "chronology" start with the last photo in the album and work backwards! ;)
Again, please let me know if there are any issues accessing the above link.

Works perfectly.

Thanks eastie. I've been watching the Villa avidly from afar ever since I went to Aus in 1999 and then NZ in 2005. H&V was my main link with all things Villa ever since I left these shores, so I'm a long time lurker and very infrequent poster. Maybe that will change going forward now that I'm back and in the thick of things again. And, yes, I hope that you're right about me being a lucky charm! I've been down the Villa a few times this season and have already met Lee selling H&V (which I bought of course) outside VP at the ManUre game. Hopefully I'll get to meet a few more folks from here in the future. Thanks to all for the welcome home!
-
Good day enjoyed the game, glad to see so many turn out
-
Ken McNaught doesn't look any different to 30 years ago!
-
Thanks Chris, great photos and welcome back. As has been said, Ken McNaught looks hardly ever different. Wonder if he still runs in that slightly pigeon toe'd way he had for such a big man. Great photo of Ian Taylor on the pitch in just the kind of pose I used to remember him having too
-

Thanks Richard. From a distance, you're right, Ken doesn't look any different (except perhaps for being a bit thicker around the middle! Aren't we all?) And yes, he does still run in a similar way to what he used to. Tayls was composed and always available for a pass and has great touch for such a gangly-looking bloke. Sid was surprisingly sprightly and ran his 'nads off for 70-odd minutes until he was subbed. Not surprisingly, Lee Hendrie, as the "youngster" of the team, provided the "legs" for the Lions and Legends and was box-to-box for virtually the entire game. He was supposed to play a half for each team, but since the Lions and Legends were 4-1 down at half time, having him change sides would have made it stupidly one-sided in terms of youth and energy, so Lee stayed with the Lions. Clearly the level was a lot lower than the prem, but his performance had more than a few people saying "we could do with some of that in the Villa midfield right now"! His second goal was a peach - outside of the right foot into the top corner. Martin Carruthers (I think) lead the line really well, chased down defenders, worked really hard and made great runs that were picked out by both Lee and Sid. Gareth Farrelly (at least I think it was him) in midfield was also very composed and a good outlet under pressure. Steve Staunton showed the odd flash of that sublime left foot, Pat Heard was solid and no-nonsense at left back and Mark Walters had a couple of nice touches but kept slipping over - obviously had the wrong footwear on! Maybe someone else can help me out here, but was that Phil King who came on for Ken McNaught in the second half?

Ah Chris, the memories. Martin Carruthers eh, he was going to be the next Gary Shaw along with so many others. Just needed Tony Daley, Deano, John Gidman, Frankie Carrodus and Dixie Deehan and you would have completed a walk through my teenage (and a bit later) years of following the Villa

Pretty much the same as me Richard!

Glad it was a success. I had intended to go but my old nan passed away on Friday which meant other priorities took over. You could see from the TV pictures that the treatment is beginning to take it's toll on Stan but I'm sure that the support he received will have given him another timely boost.

No problems with Leeg at all! We were both having a bit of a vent about gloryhunting ManUre fans! Thanks cheltenhamlion - I may well take you up on that offer!

Days like today make me so incredibly proud to be a Villa fan.
Me too, was a great day. Good to see a few Blues, Albion and supporters of other clubs too showing their Support.
After a few drops of Bathams Bitter, I had a sore head on Monday too.
-
I attended and was able to legitimately ask Dave W for a copy of the match programme.
Though when I asked for directions to the home end but for some reason he sent me to Cradley Heath and mumbled something about me just turning up for one game a season.
