Interesting line up - nice to see Weimann  get a game and gabby is lucky to keep his place - let's hope he delivers - certainly looks an attack minded team.

Very attacking line up - presumably on the assumption we won't need an out and out ball winner in midfield and we can pass our way through them. Think we'll win this comfortably now.  Lichaj and KEA are one card away from suspension, so if I'm honest I'd have liked them to have picked those up on Saturday and missed this one but be back for the PL games as we're so thin on the ground, but we are where we are.

Looks a more positive line up  than we had on Saturday - been looking forward to seeing Weimann and benteke together , I'm feeling optimistic now.

Gabby and Weimann as wide forwards in a 4-3-3? Sounds good.

It seems that Bent truly is surplus to requirements as there's no system we now play that would possibly suit his style. Why Lambert chose him as his first captain as the villa manager I will never know. Lambert must have known very little about Bent before he was appointed.

While we're playing so badly you can pick endless holes in the team selection. There's a method behind it all I'm sure, it just needs to work at some point.

I think Bent is going, not a good move in my book, goalscorers are as rare as rocking horse shit. Hope it all works out.

I still have the utmost faith in Lambert, but the thing that frustrates me is his apparent stubbornness to stick to 4-4-2. Out midfield simply isn't good enough to not put 5 in there.

I hope so - a front three like that is what I've been touting for a while; hope it delivers. hoever, against an agressive lower-league team I'm not sure the MF three will be able to hold their line.

I disagree, this is a 4 3 3 I'm sure.
As for Benr, I don't think he deserves a start at the moment.  Shay is now our second string and cup keeper, like Guzan was last year.  Brad will be back on Saturday even if Given has a blinder.

Last year we were in disbelief that we ended up fighting relegation. From what I have read on H & V so far this season, most have accepted from an early stage that this season we will be in a battle with about five or six other teams to avoid that trap door.

No we should have bent in gabbys place!

A regular goalscorer or a striker 28 league games without a goal?

I think Lambert is trying to give Benteke maximum amount of time to gain some decent form.  Another goal tonight and his scoring record for the season will be very impressive (but sadly not all of them were for us).

No we should have bent in gabbys place!

Bent isn't the right sort of player to play off Benteke, imo, he like to play off the last defenders shoulder which is where we want Benteke.  Personally I think it's Bent or Benteke and currently Lambert is favouring the big man.

Like a lot of supporters I cannot understand what the manager thinks he is doing by persistently dropping Darren Bent and playing the utterly useless Agbonlahor.

I cannot understand why Darren Bent was made team captain and then relieved of the job within a couple of weeks without it seems the courtesy of an explanation.

Paul Lambert seems to have problems with man management techniques and speaking clearly during interviews.

Its only the end of October though and the situation we find ourselves in has time to improve.

Should it stay the same around the end of the year, however, Mr Lambert might find he has become.........TSM!

Finally we are only four points behind Liverpool!

There's definitely a case of "biting you nose to spite your face" with persevering with Benteke however he is improving and the potential rewards for the whole team are greater than what Bent can provide.  The key word is potential though.

Yes that's nonsense, however I'm seriously concerned with Lambert's treatment of Bent it is ridiculous. We are not winning games and he gets goals, he's barely played and he's our top goalscorer. He should be playing and if Lambert wants to play a two then it should be Bent with Benteke.

Which bit?  The bit about him costing us?  Sitters missed against Spurs at 0-0 and Fulham when we were a goal down could have made a big difference. I don't think he is the answer.  I will say though that he does link the play better than Bent, but a top finisher he aint.  Thats just my opinion.

I think something happened behind the scenes. Lambert wouldn't have chosen Bent as his first villa captain unless he had serious plans of keeping him as an integral first team member.

A matter of weeks later he's like our third or fourth striker. Such behaviour wouldn't reflect well on the manager's judgement, that's why I think there's something else at play.

Maybe its because for the last two games he has delivered absolutley fuck all and I mean really fuck all.  We are not creating chances while he is on the pitch because our game is based around work rate.  We are making chances when benteke is on the pitch because he is helping to make that happen.  If we ere playing a two up then yes I would like to see them both together, but this isn;t a 4-4-2 tonight it's a 4-3-3 and playing Bent as a wide forward is a complete waste of time.  You could also argue that he is seeing e=what a different formation and line up can deliver in an easier environment than the PL.

But we need Prem quality NOW, not in the future.  Maybe he and others will become top players but we are not in a position to wait to find out.  I think we should play Bent and find a way to get the ball to him cos he is our best striker by a mile.

From the youtube clips of Benteke in Belguim he appeared to play on the left of an attacking three. Lambert seems to prefer him in the centre. There is the option of playing Benteke on the left, Bent in the centre and Gabby on the right.

Mods, am I allowed to call the Bent lovers 'Benders'?

See I disagree, I think for our club to move forward we need to get rid of Bent as soon as possible, his ego (warrented with his record) can't be doing any good for dressing room harmony.

I don't rate Bent's work rate or footballing ability at all, yes he is a goal scorer, but with our team not set up for a striker of his style, he is a luxury we cannot afford.

So I commend Lambert for being brave enough to see past the reputation and try and do what's best for the team, figures crossed it doesn't back fire.

But we need Prem quality NOW, not in the future.  Maybe he and others will become top players but we are not in a position to wait to find out.  I think we should play Bent and find a way to get the ball to him cos he is our best striker by a mile.

I think he's 'prem quality' as he is at the moment.

May not be EPL class, but he scores for a very good Belgian national side (that's irony by the way).
What we should be trying to do is blend his raw talent with Bent's developed capability ... but then I'm not the manager!
I'm glad that Weimann is getting game-time.

You've worked out he's not PL class, even though he's scored in 2 of his 6 PL appearances, and scored our last goal in the competition?

I'm not saying he's going to be a goalscoring legend, but I don't see how you can make such a judgement on him quite so quickly, especially when the evidence doesn't point your way.

You can only score against the opposition in front of you day to day. That is 3 goals now and 9 for him in the season including 3 international ones. And did you see this sitter he missed earlier. Just asking as everyone seems to describe the Fulham one as a sitter when he did well to get it as close as he did.

Darren Bent misses sitters, remember 'Arrys 'my gran could have scored that one' comment. He has also missed easy chances for us. But he has now had several seasons of scoring so people do not get on his back as much. Benteke is just starting in his career and so far this season, has 9 goals to his name.

Why anyone would listen to a national station itching for an upset, as opposed to a local station with knowledge and coverage from our point of view is beyond me.

BBC WM won't work on the ipad, but 5live is? Broadcasting rights maybe?

I can never get local stations online for games.

Local stations cannot broadcast football outside of a 30 mile radius (or whatever the transmitter power is) so they can't do online. DAB is normally ok though.

The Villa angle from WM is simply Paul Franks loudly whining at us to "Call in Villa fans! Is this good enough? Can Lambert sort it out? Does he have the experience? Has Lerner lost interest? Does he need to get his hand in his pocket? Villa fans - lets hear from you!" (but only miserable whining tw@ts need apply because you needn't think we're letting anyone with anything positive to say get on air, and if one accidentally gets through, we'll just ensure they don't get a word in edgeways)

Re: Savage

Am I the only one who watched him and Dion Dublin sitting next to one another on Saturday's Football Focus and was willing Dion to finish the job?

Possibly. I've always thought Dion was a complete twat that night and cost us any chance in that game.

And, sad to say, he's one of the few people that can make Savage seem like a decent broadcaster. He's awful on the radio.

Seems pretty comfortable again now.

inevitable that Di Canio will have got in the faces of his players during the break. We need to ride it out and then grab a 3rd to kill this off. As for what he might have said I'd be shocked if it was in a dialect of this planet.
