Hi Eastie, yes mate, some of the "bedwetters" are! We are poor at the minute, yet have only lost to Man Citeh at their place! Three of our key players have yet to perform to the best of their obvious abilities, but the defence has been largely sound. Once we get firing on all cylinders we'll do well i think!

Are you coming up Saturday?

Cheers Dave, your sentiments are appreciated mate! I plan to "attack" the jobcentre and various job websites and agencies like a one man invasion force from tomorrow! lol

By the way if you think  you will increase your win ratio for O'Neill by beating us let me tell you we are tough to win against. We have ONLY lost 5 games this season.

Not this time mate, loved going to roker, remember winning 4-0 there in mid 80s ,great day but bloody cold - what do you think of the footie o Neill plays ? Hardly the most exciting or entertaining is it , you seem to be solid in defence but not scoring many?

Had a 3 year spell in Hartlepool in the 80s and loved the north east , great people and friendly with it- best of luck on the job front pal!

I was at that game. Steve McMahon iirc correctly, tore us a new arsehole!

The footy under O'Neill is at the moment, very defensive, then hit on the counter attack, but unfortunately our main counter attacking players, aren't counter attacking! We look very sluggish going forward. Fletcher has done well to bag as many as he has already to be fair. Without him we'd probably be bottom of the table. Demba Ba is our second top League scorer so far! I don't know whether to laugh or cry at that thought to be honest! Defence is sound, but it should be, at the minute there are usually 9 men, (without the goalie) behind the ball. Midfield is lightweight without Cattermole, and with that it lacks currently, a spark of creativity. I do feel however, that once Johnson, Sessegnon and McClean hit form again then this will change and goals will come from elsewhere other than Fletcher. But yes, we aren't good to watch at the minute, i must admit! Being a Sunderland fan though, that seems to come naturally with the territory, lol! I think we'll be ok, but as for Saturday, to be honest, i agree with a post made earlier, i think it will be a very drab draw. Neither of us are doing well. Will only change opinion IF our key players suddenly start to fire into form ..... !!

Yep McMahon and withe were outstanding that day, if bent is on the bench I expect he will get stick warming up, I have a few cousins who support Sunderland so have a soft spot for them but I'd probably take the 0-0 if offered to be honest .

Hi Davey, I think MON has reverted to type, Men behind the ball, counter attacking. Without the luxury of players like Barry Young Milner Carew Petrov Gabby (on form) Melberg Laursen.
You still have enough to be mid table though, we would settle for that right now. Cheers H

Davey B, how is Carlos doing at Sunderland, always liked him

Sorry marra, i missed your post earlier! Yeah, he's fitting right in here, looks quality, and very solid alongside O'Shea. A vast improvement on Michael Turner! Bit of a mare against Citeh mind, but looked solid every other time in my opinion. He's getting involved with the fans as well, using twitter or the likes to organize competitions for his shirt and stuff. Seems a real down to earth top bloke to be honest, and he seems to be enjoying his time up here so far!

Yes definately, again i agree with you Hawkeye. The lad seems almost humble in his approach to the fans, a refreshing change to some of the "Do you know who i am?" brigade.

We'll win this.

Sunderland will dominate for large portions of the game, forcing Guzan into three or four really good saves, all the while we go  up the other end and smash four.

Slumberland 1-4 Villa.

First time that I went to Roker Park was in 1972. The coach that we were on broke down at Washington Services. We had gone out of the back of the services and into a pub nearby then got back to find we were stuck. The other coach (yes, there were only two) came back from Sunderland and took us to Roker Park with a Police escort taking us through red traffic lights. It got a bit hairy in the Roker End so we slipped into the side but were spotted by some loons who met us as we left the ground. I was greeted with 'are you going to hospital tonight mate?'. I said 'no' and took flight but we had no idea where the coaches were parked. They had found us another one from somewhere, or fixed our old one and parked it by the Marina. The Police came on board and advised us to draw all the curtains and duck down as the coach was likely to be bricked. We got away unscathed. Another memorable visit there was a night match. We had been drinking in the Roker Hotel and made our way towards the ground only to stop in a pub that had been totally trashed. The floor was deep with broken glass and everyone had been cleared out. The gaffer managed to find a few glasses and served us anyway.

Sorry to hear of your not so pleasant memories of visiting up here Dave. Sounds like you were coming by Barclay Court! I twice got mugged coming through there as a bairn ..... by Sunderland fans! I had a similar experience at Villa Park one year mid 1980's, about 15 of us walking to the bus after the game we had to pass a pub, your lot poured out and started to pelt bottles at us. One of our lads got a bottle of his head and a cut brow iirc, but we continued past without much more than a few bottles being thrown, as well as a bit of growling and abusive aggression sent in our direction. Was a bit surprizing as earlier we had been cracking on great with a few Villa fans outside the Holte End without any probs. I can still remember one was a coloured kid, about our age, and he was wearing a cracking woolie Villa Hat that a few of the lads commented on. Stupid thing is, i can't remember the game, but can remember talking to the lad with the hat, purely for his quality hat! I visited the Villa Supporters Shop that day, and bought a colour team photo, which i've still got somewhere!

Sadly in the early 80s I remember Sunderland fans tipping one disabled villa fan from his wheelchair- probably the most cowardly act Ive known in 40yrs of watching football- at least the crowd problems of the olden days have improved greatly in recent times.

That is appalling behaviour, Eastie.  :(  Like every club, we have our share of inbred arseholes that feel the need to act like this. I can only hope the perpertrators got some sort of justified payback later. I'm honestly wincing at the repulsive thought of that happening to the disabled fan, i would think that if it happened these days our own fans would "sort" the scum out. I was sitting at Roker Park literally a few seats from a Sunderland lad that through a glass bottle from high in the stands at Phil Thompson once. I can't abide Phil Thompson myself, but ha'way man. The bottle just missed him and a few players coming off at half time. The bottle had hardly landed and two lads near the culprit had him by the throat and dragged him to a Policeman and handed him in. I love my club, i love my area, and i love the community spirit we had prior to the Tories smashing things up in the North East, but that is shameful & sickening Eastie, no argument. It is worse than cowardice. I am geniunelly ashamed for them.

Don't worry davey, having lived up there for 3 years and having relatives in easington I know the north east folk on the whole are great people , all clubs have their idiots I'm afraid and at least nowadays things seem much improved.

The Sunderland fans were outraged at the time by the behaviour of the person concerned and it was reported in the press at the time - the offender was caught.
As for the Thompson incident I'm amazed the guy missed him as Thommo has a nose like Pinocchio!

I'm visiting Nissan tomorrow with work so will have a bit of banter with the lads up there.

Won't be at the game on Saturday though, money is too tight at the minute.

St. Mary's Car Park in the town centre. It's secure, and when you come out, it's basically straight across Wearside Bridge into the Stadium.

Only the bedwetters Paulie, only the bedwetters!  ;)  It's very poor at the minute, three key players all out of form and no-one of significant quality to replace them. It will come good. Still only one defeat in the league at the moment, though only one victory! Defence is pretty sound. Disapointing to lose in the manner we did, particularly at home in a derby, but life's a bitch and then you die! Pleased it brought a smile to your face though, at least something positive come out of it somewhere!   ;)

Just the thread titles are enough to know the penny is beginning to drop. I wonder if they'll admit that a lot of what we said at the time actually wasn't bitterness but based on what we saw when he was here.

Is it just me, or does H&V make every other team's forum look like shit? They all look like they were designed on a fax machine. Well done and thanks to the mods for making this site look so nice.

And folks can also (hopefully) see why we keep the number threads down where possible.
That Sunderland looks as messy as the SHA one with numerous threads started all saying the same things and just a few replies to each one.

Although this fella is yet to realise.

only Sunderland can have one of the best managers outside the top 6 and one of our better teams (on paper) for a long time and be so shit.

The reporter on Radio 5 said they were booed off after the game.  MON won't like that (remember him refusing to acknowledge Villa fans after they had booed the team off the game before).  I'm sure the press will be reminding them  how lucky they are to have him up there though.

Couldn't agree more, I've had a count and there's well over 70 threads started today there. Unbelievable.

I think the funniest thing for me in all of it is how predictable it was with MON when he took the job. We all told the Sunderland fans what to expect, it fell on deaf ears, and a lot sooner than I thought they are replicating threads we had every week for about 12 months, although we were top 6 and in the cups at the time. Makes us look bad, and we would love to be top 6 again, but not under Mad Martin, no way. The football was dire, especially at home, for a long, long time.

Their fans opinions vary widely on Saturday's game. From giving us a hiding and kick starting their season to us giving them a hiding and them being in full on crisis mode. Lots of comments about Bent being guaranteed to score the winner. And a few mentions of their manager whom some choose to call Marty. Opinions vary widely on him too.

It was the same crap on the site under Bruce, though he had longer and changed personnel like he was swapping pannini stickers. MON has only been here 11 months, and has only had two transfer windows. The first of which (January) he was still asessing the squad he inherited. I'm not making excuses for our currently dour form for him, but regardless of the only 1 league defeat, we have "bedwetters" that are wanting him gone now, after only 11 months, seriously!! So who would we replace him with? Harry has been referenced, FFS! He wouldn't go to Newcastle, so why would he come here? Regardless of people's feelings for or against the bloke, he surely deserves to have the opportunity to fix things, and should have a few full seasons in which to get things changed around to the way he needs it to be. It is not good to watch at the moment, but he is still getting results with 3 key creative players right out of form. I honestly think that once these three start to fire, we'll be up and away. We aren't going to win the Premiership or the Champions League, long gone are the days of a Brian Clough bringing a lower league side up into the top echelon and winning it, then moving on to conquer Europe. The zillionaire's who own the top clubs have put pay to that. We all want the best success for our clubs, and rightly so, but the "bedwetters" who want MON gone now after only 11 months need to accept this, or go and find something else to do, as there is nothing coming there way other than disappointment in my opinion.

Sadly davey you haven't seen that the emperor wears no clothes.

You see, a decent bloke but one day soon you will see that o Neill is not the saviour, just a past his best manager with a reputation that doesn't match his results- you are in for a tough few months ahead and I doubt mon will stick around long once the fans see through him.

Best wishes my friend in your time of trouble ahead.

I'll save my coments until after Saturday - a good counter-attacking team could wreak havoc on our defence, based on last night and against Norwich.
MON may be an overrated SOB but he'll be sweating blood to get one over Villa and Lambert.

Bottom line is that both sides are 'fallen giants' in the context of the EPL.
