Blimey, that penalty takes a while doesn't it?!

Bloody hell, Sid almost celebrated scoring those last two goals.
He's still the greatest ever Aston Villa player I've had the pleasure to see.
-
That is who I wanted to be in the playground

By a country mile, in my opinion.

Sid, is a true legend and I agree the best Villa player I have ever seen, and that includes Brian Little etc....

Yeah, me too.
When I used to kick a ball as a kid, I wanted to do it like Sid. The most elegant player I've ever seen.

Never meet your Heroes (not when your pissed anyway).
I will start by saying Gordon Cowans is my favourite Villa player of all time.I was a lefted footed player as a kid (still am I suppose) and loved watching Sid pinging 30 yard passes with his left foot.
I went to a European Cup Evening at the Aston Social a few years ago which included Dennis Mortimer,Tony Morley, Andy Blair, Gary Shaw and Gordon Sidney Cowans. There was a Q&A session and Sid mentioned how many of the current team weren't even two footed, using Ashley Young as an example.
Afterwards I found Sid for a picture and told him he was left footed.
Sid "yeah but I can hit the ball equally as good with my right foot"
Me "but if I rolled a ball to you now , you would hit it back with your left foot"
Sid "I will tell you what I said when I was onstage , I can hit the ball with my left or my right "
My Mate "to be fair you've both had a bit to drink"
I was angry with myself I made Sid angry. I should have remembered Paul McGrath's book when he mentions Sid as a great two footed player.I just remember Sid beautiful left foot, but didn't express my fondness very well.
My wife got the kids to do me a Villa picture for my 40th a few years ago signed by some of the Old Stars including Sid.She told Chris Nicholl about my drunken faux pas and Sid's reaction, she said he absolutely pissed himself laughing.

Met Sid a few times and have to say always found him a true gent. Great player with both feet, though would say better with his right foot, am sure he always took penalties with his right foot. If you are talking about left footed genuis players, look no further than Alex Cropley or my first hero Bruce Rioch
-
Your right he is a gent who will stand and chat , have a pint with Villa fans. My post was meant to show me in embarassing light.
-
Oh sorry frankh, met you three times and you were a right twat :)

I need to think about that one !
-
only jesting mate, am sure you are a true gent.
But for that butcher in Bilbao, am sure Sid would have become a true world class player and I dont say that lightly
-
You are right . I think I have seen a handful of world class players play for the Villa,Brian Little (although too young to really appreciate him ) Cowans and McGrath. Can't think of any other world class players even Yorke in is pomp.
-
I think Gary Shaw could have been on that list as well, but for that to55er Bowyer
-
Probably agree again. In that era though having an International Cap was sacrosanct - Brian Little's international cap in real terms and taking inflation into account makes Lee Hendrie's cap look like 5 metre swimming badge.Gary Shaw was a truely gifted player as was Withe , Morley, Bremner , Mortimer....I could name the team but I 'm on about a squad that includes Pele, Van Basten, Cruyff.I dont like Arsenal but when I was a kid I thought Liam Brady was world class.
-
Sid was a truly wonderful player and I think he should have been in the England squad well before his first cap and for a long time after. He had the potential to be world class.
In my opinion the only world class player we have had in my lifetime has been McGrath, though Platt and Bosnich were possible contenders for a while.
