It is Wednesday afternoon, the day after Lee Hendrie was applauded off the pitch by the 61 Tamworth supporters who travelled to Forest Green Rovers to watch him start his first match for the Conference Premier club.

61 ? According to the Graunian 61 people travelled from Staffordshire to Gloucestershire just to see Lea Hendry.

Interesting article. Not sure I'd warm to Hendrie after an afternoon in his company though. I used to live next door to him in Rowington and also see him drinking out in Knowle a lot. He was a proper jumped up twat and no mistake.

Whoever picked up Finwood Lawns as a repo would have got a nice property. If you can take the sound of the M40 rushing past your front garden.

The thing that strikes me about these kind of articles is that we're meant to assume the misery was too high a price to pay for the glory years. The guy played for the club we love, had flash cars, big house, women on tap...and now he's broke he's all contrite about it. I'm sure being bankrupt isn't pleasant but he's had more opportunities to look after himself and his family than most of us will ever get and he fudged it massively.

I do definitely think that he was introduced to a world of fame and fortune at a very young and impressionable age and has suffered the consequences pretty severely. It's easy for us work a day wage slaves to feel no sympathy for someone earning the kind of money that he was, but I somehow get the impression that he's learned a very harsh lesson and so to come on here and call him twat is really unnecessary.

Good luck to him and i hope he gets a chance to coach or manage a team someday.
He just loves the game and as soon as he realises that there is just him to blame for the place he finds himself in today and moves on it will be good for him.
Depression is not to be scoffed at, by the way.

Well, no. But I tell you what, he's looking fit and up for it at the moment, and at this level that's almost enough. Add in the bit of skill he has retained and he's looking a decent enough player at the moment.

Yep, I always saw him in the Red Lion, or in Rosie's in Solihull. He always gave it the 'big I am', and had one his mates drive him about in that Ferrari after he got banned. I remember one occasion in particular, when he wasn't playing due to injury, and he was out in Rosie's. I asked him when he was coming back because we needed him, and he replied "Oh yeah? Who's 'we'?" The same night, one of his meatheaded friends started to jostle my mate because he didn't know who Lee Hendrie was - mate doesn't follow football at all - as my mate was trying to get past his pack of hangers on to get to the bar. A lovely crew.

Never liked him , remember him at Walsall-pre season friendly grabbing his scrotum and mouthing "suck my cock"  to the Villa fans.Met him on Broad street once(trying to get in a private party after the end of season awards-holte suite,me and my mate met Nigel Kennedy at the awards and he said he would try and get us in) and can confirm he's a little chav shit. If his career had taken a different path and ended up playing for the blues I think the the vitriol  towards him from Villa fans would make our feelings for Savage look like a love-in with Mother Teresa

Look, I don't want to sound like I'm suddenly his biggest fan just because he's turned up at Tamuff, but he did play for us for ten years and came through our youth set-up, he surely has as much right to play for the Old-Stars as many who turn up who I hardly recognise as ever playing a first team game for Villa.

Comparison I always make is with Gareth Barry as Barry himself had issues with drink early on in his career but soon wised up while Hendrie didnt.

One is still playing at the very highest level for club and country in his 30s, Hendrie is in non-league.

Hmmm, couldn't help but think that read an awful lot like the many "Sorry about that red card, I'm all grown up now and have learned my lesson and it won't happen again" articles that appeared in the Evening Mail during his time with us.

I hope he sorts himself out but I'm not massively interested in hearing about him and his life I'm afraid.

Not really interested in the musing of a young man who was grossly overpaid for the modicum of talent he possessed, yet who frittered it all away.  Plenty of people, for whatever reason, have to start afresh during their 30s or 40s.  They do so without feeling the need to share their woes with the national press. And they also do so having not hope of ever enjoying the lifestyle of a top-flight footballer.

So seems he can't take a bit of stick from a wag in a crowd asking if he wants to borrow £20, was happy to ask Colchester players if they wanted to wash his Ferrari.
He's a cock, the interview reads exactly like all the other "I've learned my lesson, I've grown up, I'm going to change" interviews he has ever given.
As mentioned earlier, hard to feel sorry for someone driving around in a Q7, he must have really fallen on hard times.

Totally agree Dave. Although he was a bit of a twonk, I often don't get some of the stick that Lee seems to get from Villa Fans. He by and large always tried his best and celebrated all his goals as I would if I was playing for the Villa.

Good enough for me.

I saw him out and about on a few occassions, he was always acting like a bellend. I used to see a few players out and about and all of them were sound but Lee just acted it up every time. That includes the first time I saw him out and he hadn't even played for the first team at that point.

I think Hendrie gets a raw deal from Villa fans on here. Whats he done that was so bad? Frittered his money away? He won't be the first footballer to do that, and won't be the last either. Big deal.

Judging by the interview, he seemed more concerned that he'd let his family down more than himself. I liked him as a player, i can't speak for what he's like as a person because i've never met him. He earned stupid money and he handled it badly. Let's just hope a few of our younger players read the article.

To be fair to him he was given unsound advice and was far too trusting, that's why most of his money has gone. I agree with everything else though.

We recently had a baby and our community midwife had one of "his women" (her words) as a patient a few years ago. She said he was a tosser. She also used to moan about one of her unmarried Mums to be who always wore knickers with "Pussy" written on them (as a design, not done by herself in felt tip) so not sure if she just disliked all young people.

I liked Lee as a Villa player, I've heard all the stories about him off the pitch but on the pitch he was a Villa man. He also went on a nice little scoring spree. He scored some crackers and would go bananas. Yes, he bought some flash cars but at least he didn't go bankrupt to a bookmaker. At least he tried to put his money aside. Sadly, it seems he was either badly advised, too stupid to realise, or both.

A couple of observations:

Do all bankrupts drive around in Audi Q7's? If so, I might consider that route.

Regarding his "investments", if he was so badly advised, why doesn't he sue his advisors? I think this is just a smokescreen. He probably put 5-10% down to buy the properties, borrowed the rest then couldn't make the mortgage repayments as his income dried up. I'd be surprised if he made much of an effort to repay any of the capital outstanding.

I wish the man no ill-will - I wasn't a huge fan (IMO his England cap marked the pinnacle of his career) - but I'd be amazed if he hasn't just pissed the vast majority of his wealth away.

Do he still have properties as it come up and down. Maybe he need to find someway to make the property recover bit of money. I would though Doug Ellis have right people advising his players about handling money properly.
