Villa are unchanged for the clash with Tottenham.
The team that started the match against West Brom gets the nod at White Hart Lane too.
That means Brad Guzan in goal, Fabian Delph partnering Karim El Ahmadi and Gabby Agbonlahor alongside Christian Benteke up top.
In other news, Brad Friedel loses his place for Tottenham, meaning his top-flight consecutive appearance record is at an end.

VILLA: Guzan, Lowton, Vlaar (c), Clark, Bennett, El Ahmadi, Delph, Albrighton, Holman, Agbonlahor, Benteke. Subs: Given, Bent, N'Zogbia, Lichaj, Bannan, Westwood, Weimann.

TOTTENHAM: Lloris, Walker, Vertonghen, Gallas, Caulker, Dempsey, Lennon, Bale, Dembele, Sandro, Defoe. Subs: Huddlestone, Adebayor, Dawson, Sigurdsson, Friedel, Falque, Townsend.

Surprised Bent doesn't start and Benteke does. Benteke had the touch of a pinball machine last week whereas when Bent came on he did what he was supposed to and score.

I didn't after him moaning in public. Good decision by the manager as he picks the team not our players. Albrighton lucky to start. Hope their new keeper has a poor debut.

I watched Walcott come off the bench yesterday and score a key goal for Arsenal. Nasri,Dzeko and Aguero were all on the bench for Man City. You could make a case for all 4 being as big a reputation player as Bent is. I'm sure all of the them would have wanted to start for their teams but they didn't. Bent should have kept his mouth shut, played his part and understood that we are all having to pull together right now. No room for passengers or egos. He's a really important player for us and I hope he sees that and gets his down.

It'll be a good decision as long as Benteke doesn't do his impression of a baby carthorse again, with the first touch to match.

Surprised Bent has'nt started as well. Let's hope he comes on and does the business again.

As for Spurs, Daniel Levy must have had a word in Villas-Boas ear and asked him why he's not playing that new goalkeeper he bought for him.

Perhaps a really fired up Bent coming off the bench (if needs be) would be a very potent weapon. I see the logic in going for the big man, and pace combo though. Think both Gabby and Benteke could have some joy today.

I think its a 4-5-1/4-3-3 formation with Gabby and Albrighton out wide to help counter the Spurs wingers threat, so playing a target man up front who can hold the ball up is probably the best option.

Makes sense, proof is in the pudding etc.

Early days, but I really like the look of Benteke.

It makes no sense.  Benteke was crap, Bent came on and scored, and yet finds himself on the bench again.  I'd have thought the point was made last week, if there was any point to be made.    We're getting sucked back down towards the bottom 3 rapidly, we can't afford to have a player of Bent's quality not playing.

He's 21 and learning that he has to quick and precise with his touch at this level. I've seen far more experienced players that have cost much more be as careless or inefficient with the ball. Just as I've seen forwards sky the ball instead of chipping the keeper as he did vs Swansea. He does good things and not so good things. I don't think Gabby or Bent are any different.

That's the thing Lee, we have to trust the manager that he is showing to treat everyone the same. Once you start showing you have favourites how do you ever get past that? Bent would have been wise to have said publicly that he understands that it is a squad game and he's doing his bit and spoken to Lambert privately. Irrespective of how Lambert tried to blow it off it has to have got his back up a little. Still you hope that he's still picking the side to best play this game.

At this stage, Gabby and Bent are both easily superior.  That isn't to say that Benteke won't come good, but he doesn't deserve to keep starting just because Lambert paid big money for him.  Weimann looks a far, far more complete and skilful striker than Benteke in my opinion.

It might well be the case that Lambert is making another point with regards to Bent. That is to say, don't talk to the press so candidly in the future.  I must say that he has every right to do so.

Or, he might just have seen Gabby and Benteke link up well in training all week.

Just a thought on Bent.  Is Villa the only place he could get £85k a week?  If so, I wouldn't imagine to hear him repeating his comments to reporters after today.

Poor team selection for me. Would have Bent back in and certainly wouldnt have Albrighton starting. Huge test for Lowton up against Bale. Havent been that impressed with him yet and would have gone for Lichaj as a better defender. Surprised Herd isnt even making the bench too.

All will be revealed I guess but that looks a very strong Spurs side

Benteke is going to be somewhat volatile in his performances, but he does offer something different to what we currently have. I think picking him isn't as much about quality as it is about playing options an what might work best against Spurs. In terms of quality, off course Bent and Gabby are better players overall but it is equally possible that he could be a real handful today for Tottenham's defenders and goalkeeper with his presence. Lambert's Norwich won at Spurs last year so maybe he has a plan for today using Benteke.

Although Bent is a better player, he doesn't link the play from the midfield as well as Benteke and we need 11 men for this game, not 10.  We saw at West Ham how pointless Bent can be if we dont get the ball to him.

Only things i dont agree with in team selection is delph ahead of bannan. Bent deserves to be on the bench as yes he can score goals but his workrate isnt high enough atm in my opinion, he's getting there but still not there 100%. Whatever lamberts thinking is, he's got his mind set and is sticking with it like managers should do, they aren't paid to bend to their "star-players" will and so its about time we had a manager prepared to stand up too them. Lowton and Bennet have both shown talent and have been recognised for it, so lets just hope they can get stuck-in against Bale and co today.

Exactly! In my opinion you cant have one player the rest of the team has to play around, it can't work that way and we will suffer for it if his form dips. Having Gabby and Benteke together means we have more options when attacking, not just setting Bent up for him to score and take the credit.

Not entirely convinced anymore that would be such a bad thing. I'm a Darren Bent fan and if we still had Ash and Downing I'd never want to see a player like him sold. It's a different time and Bent will be 29 in February. If we can get £15 for him in January, despite the accusations of a lack of ambition, it may be worth it in my opinion.

Surprised but will trust Lambert on this. He's come in and shaken a few up and got them out of their comfort zones, Bent clearly being one of them. It's down to the players to make it impossible for them to be dropped. Something we've lacked for years.

The idea that Bent is just a goal poacher is complete myth. This season he has tracked back loads and worked selflessly last week when he came on. When we played Swansea he made lots of runs into the channels and linked up well with the midfield.

A yellow at the time or a straight red on video review retrospectively with an automatic one match ban and fine. It's not simulation or diving, it's cheating! Call it what it is, but the weak and useless FA won't deal with it whatever term they care to use!

Half time. Not too bad so far, after a slightly shaky start. Vlaark doing well at the back, El Ahmadi in good form in the middle, bursts of hope from Gabby and Benteke, but a quiet game for Holman so far and very mixed stuff from Delph.

Bit better than meh to be honest. We look pretty solid, think in most games this season we'll need a goal to get any points and we don't look great going forward. Amazing how many times the final ball is too heavy or the first touch in the final third is not up to scratch. Even Gabby's chance I think the pass was slightly overhit by Holman.

Pretty poor game though. A bit soporific. Albrighton doesn't seem to be doing much apart from helping to double up on bale

I was thinking that too. We are looking to pass it and we chase everything down. That never happened last year.

Why didn't the linesman flag it for a dive? Must admit when I first saw it I thought they'd both met the ball and it came off Bale for a throw. But the linesman was perfectly positioned to see what Bale did.

Decent enough 1st half - Vlaar looking solid and gabby and benteke linking well at times.

Although the 1st half at saints was ok too so let's not get carried away yet.

Encouraging performces from Gabby who is linking up play superbly, Ron looks composed at the back and KEA is very tidy.
I'd like to see us shooting more, especially when outside the box.

Not sure what changes we can make to improve 2nd half. Shame we don't have Herd on the bench to replace Delph as he's on a yellow, I guess Bent could come on, not that we're creating any real chances. Albrighton's delivery isn't great, not that N'Zogbia offers anything on the wing.

Spurs, as I mentioned pre-match, are nothing special and Hilts got it spot on regarding Bale.

A solid enough first half, with neither side really impressing.  Delph is a sending off waiting to happen though, I'd sub him at half time.

N'zogbia and bent for benteke and albrighton I reckon.

No delph. Hmm we could either now be really dangerous or get ripped to pieces!

Holman sitting in the middle now?

Game over. Christ I need to stop calling this. Real chance we'll lose 2-3 more now I think with us having cometely opened up our midfield!

the defending was shit for the goal, yet all we will hear is Benteke missed 2 chances. I really hope we give this lad a chance.

I'd rather we gave Weimann a chance.  That lad is quality.

So much more quality than Benteke that he's scored a whole league goal more in 5x as many appearances.

You do realise that that's an entirely hopeless argument.  Weimann is clearly a much better player.  And bollocks, Spurs score a second.  Perhaps Lambert doesn't *actually* know what he's doing?

You're so desperately predictable.

This could be 3 or 4 , Southampton and West Ham all over again. Do well for 35 mins, have a bunch of chances , ... all missed and we end up at 2-nil.
Work in progress I guess,  We have a bunch of players with limited experience , but time is on our side at the moment. No panic yet.

It's the midfield that's the problem for me, too. Delph is hit or miss, at best, and KEA looks a good player, but it seems to me that teams can march a long way forward towards our penalty area before they are challenged.

It is too soon to 'write us off', but it's a poor start to the season and no mistake.

If Lerner had denied the manager any money to buy these players he'd have been vilified as Doug was, it was MO'N who said get me Beye, NRC, Heskey, Harewood, Sidwell etc, it was MO'N who then fell out with most of them and refused to play them. If Lerner had denied the manager any money to buy these players he'd have been vilified as Doug was, it was MO'N who said get me Beye, NRC, Heskey, Harewood, Sidwell etc, it was MO'N who then fell out with most of them and refused to play them. How's that Lerner's fault?

For not setting a budget for O'Neill to work with, to not realise that wages had to be built into cash flow projections, for continuing to back O'Neill when it was clear that lots of his signings weren't working.

I hate getting into arguments with villa fans yet its all we seem to have done for the past two and a half years.

I miss the good old harmonious days as we happily marched up the table

we need something at Fulham!

Indeed. Losing at White Hart Lane is no disgrace, they're a good team, but in the context of the games coming up and the league table in general, this is a bit of a shitter. A draw would have kept us bubbling over, such as we were, but this will just add a little more reason to start worrying.

Fulham ain't bad at home, I just hope Berbatov is still out.

So we have Doug's penny pinching for years and everyone moans, Randy comes in and gives the manager wads of cash to spend and ultimately everyone moans.

God we do love to moan don't we.

I must be the only one who thought we did OK. We are talking about a team who have just beat man u. Only reason they scored was a fluke goal.

I might be wrong, as I've been trying to block this game out, but I don't think he's actually been able to touch the ball yet.

You know the score on these match threads:

- everyone ok whilst 0-0
- they score a lucky goal and suddenly we've been shit all game
- we get a luck equaliser, it's been a great fighting performance

And that is the problem. No disgrace in losing here. Anyone who thought this season would not be challenging is very naive. It will get better but will take time.

I've heard his name once in commentary since he came on, he gave the ball away! Benteke has been constantly in the thick of it, maybe that's why Bent didn't start? Just a thought!

It's a worrying stat but you have to bear in mind that we've only had a proper manager for a handful of those games.

Two easy chances within a few minutes. Should have been two up when they scored.

Were aren't a million miles away from being a good team, bit we are going to need points if we don't want to get dragged into a relegation battle, with all the added pressures that will put on a young team.

We need a bit more experience in midfield too, but January is a long way off.

Don't forget the obligatory pop at Randy Lerner once we go a goal down.

That's not quite true, not everyone has said that!
We have played great for 35 mins, as we did at West Ham and also Southampton, but unless we have someone who can take chances we will lose! Simple! It is work in progress , expect ups and downs. Let's face it there is no disgrace in losing to Spurs, we should however beat Saints,  etc. But we need to score !

Bit of a lazy stat IMHO. Most of the games were with a more or less completely different team undera useless manager. Having said that I am concerned we've only got 5 points from a relatively easy starting 7 games - the Southampton result was a real sickener

Can we please just fast-forward to the end of the season when our young players will have settled, we're climbing the table and all our little flicks and passes are coming off.

Right now, I'm too scared that we will remain the square root of shit for the rest of time.

It is a disgrace we are supposed to be a competitive football club. They would of won this all day long with 1 goal.

At half time at 0-0 I was pleased with how we had kept it at 0-0 and asked for us to be a little more patient in the last third and retain the ball better.
The problem we had was that we were playing as well as we could and our substitutions made us worse - their substitutions improved them. Darren Bent is just the type of striker we needed when we purchased Heskey, as a struggling side he offers the square root of fuck all unless he is 6 yards from goal. Sadly a pitch is 110 yards. The fact of the matter is we're not good enough. Delph, Bannan and Albrighton have all started games this season and they're clearly not good enough. El Ahmadi doesn't instill me in confidence when we play 4-4-2. Holman, you can't fault his effort or work rate but the quality is championshipesque. As for the youngsters like Bennett, Lowton and Benteke, they need to be given time, but it would help their development if they were playing with experienced premiership players and not the likes Delph, Bannan and Albrighton.
Spurs are a million miles ahead of us, the diffference being they have an astute business man who knows his football in Daniel Levy, we have Lerner who doesn't give a fuck.
Even West fucking Brom are better than us and it fucking hurts like hell.
