Bones,
Losing 3-0 at Fellows Park in 1970-71 was one of my early introductions into how shit life could be as a Villa fan.
Filbert st away in 1981 was one of the very best ever, anywhere.
-
This like swapping stickers as a kid. got, got, got, got...
don't care that I haven't been to any particular ground to be honest. Although, and its still there, I've never been to Anfield.

Elm Park, my mate is a reading fan
My main memory of Elm Park is of their fans in the main stand coming down to the front by the side of the pitch to smoke at half time. This was post Bradford, so presumably the stand was wooden.
And us winning 2-0 of course ( Thompson and Birch I think).

That was a crazy celebration when Garry Thompson put the ball, the goalkeeper, and himself in the back of the net, sitting on the wall that ran along the back of the away end it was like watching the tide go out as everyone dissapeared towards the pitch.

Never got to The Vetch Field. Not sure I'll lose any sleep over it.

Went there one year, just after Christmas. The mob off The Special kicked the gates open and Charlie Aitken scored. When we went back there in the First Division, we were in the seats behind the goal and you could see into the prison.
-
Never went to St marys or the new Southampton ground.
Been to Barnet though, with Kidderminster Harriers.
The old away end was great. Early season you could turn your back on the footy and watch the cricket.

Was that the cup game ?

Storming to promotion in division 2, a good year for new grounds and we took thousands everywhere we went. Happy days.
-
Happy days indeed.
Hull city away was an experience aswell that season.

Especially on that train back to Hull Paragon.

In the 1980s I had got up to 79 of the 92 and was thinking I would achieve the lot. But then a combination of my life not revolving 100% around football, clubs moving to new grounds and getting rid of 4th division re-election has reduced the numbers.
I never saw a game at The Valley in its old state but I did see The Who there.
I missed us at Elm Park but have been to the Madjeski.
I never went to The Old Show ground but have been to Glanford Park.
I never went to Park Avenue except by mistake when trying to find Valley Parade.
I haven't been in Accringtons new ground except stopping off to look at it when on the way to see us at Burnley. (Never went to Peel Park, before my time)
I haven't been in Chesterfields new ground except stopping off to look at it when on the way to see us at Sheffield United. (But did go to Saltergate, our 1st ever game in the 3rd division).

I assume you meant you never went to The Dell ?
The cricket comment made me think.
Did anybody ever go to Bramall Lane when it was still a 3 sided ground sharing with Yorkshire ? Strange watching the Villa play with a cricket pavillion in the distance.

Also, we played a 3rd round League Cup game at Northampton on the way to the 1971 final, That was stands on three sides of the ground as well sharing with the cricket, and just temporary platforms along the other side so they could get a few more in.

Pretty sure we played Northampton away in the FA Cup in the 80's aswell and they only had 3 stands then too.

I'm barely in double figures of away grounds, but when living in Cardiff did see Villa turn out for Carl Dale's testimonial in 1999 at Ninian Park. Seem to remember Merson and Vassell looking great for us, a young Joe Calzaghe and an old Neville Southall livening up the half-time penalty shoot out, and the Cardiff old stars doing their best.
Those who went in the 70s probably had a more lively experience, but for me one of the best grounds ever, much missed.

I seem to remember Mark Walters scoring a belter at Northampton, that must have been a Cup tie?

1983, third round, we won 1-0.
I can't remember what I did yesterday but I can remember that game vividly!
-
I was convinced we were going to win the cup in '83. I was 13 and used to us winning trophies. I soon learnt.
-
Seem to remember 2 1/2 stands at Northampton. There was a bowling green as well as the cricket pitch.
-
I went to all the old grounds of Arsenal, Southampton, Sunderland, Man City, Reading, Stoke, Huddersfield, Leicester, Millwall, Hull, Derby, Boro, Shrewsbury, Coventry and Oxford. Missed out on Swansea, Bolton and Brighton and can't remember us playing Cardiff or Walsall at their old grounds in my time.

Wasn't the game televised live ?

Don't think so. I don't remember any early round games being live in those days.
-
I think live First Division and FA Cup games began the following season (although strangely I don't think semi-finals were shown live till a few years later), but the highlights were televised because I distinctly remember Walters goal.
-
Was probably MOTD highlighs then.
Always remember Shrewsbury games on MOTD in the FA Cup with some bloke in a boat on the river outside the ground positioned to reclaim balls booted out of the stadium.

Wellington Road - would like to have ticked that one off!
There's very few of the old grounds that I didn't get to but I did regretfully miss out on Rotherham's Millmoor, Darlington's Feethams and Huddersfield's Leeds Road.
I can't think of a single new ground I prefer to what that club had before.
-
I did go to Bramhall Lane when the cricket pitch was still there. It was a bit strange, but not as much as you'd think.
It wasn't to watch the Villa, it was a midweek game that either was or effectively was a promotion decider between Sheff U and Cardiff. 5-1 to the home team in front of three packed stands, and Cardiff manager Jimmy Scoular - dirty bastard in his playing days - claimed the ref robbed them.
-
Roker Park and Victoria Ground, I don't ever remember watching a game on TV where it was sunny at either of those grounds, Thats why I wish I'd visited them, I loved a winters night game in a vintage old stadium, the closest I've come to that was at Burnley a couple of years ago.

I went to Roker for a christmas/new year game in the mid 70's. Coldest place on earth. I took my wife on one of her rare football excursions. She reasoned that buying a hamburger and covering it in mustard would be a good way of getting warm.
One bite nearly took her head off. She couldn't even speak for a good 5 minutes.
Funny as hell, I couldn't help but laugh. It's the closest I've come to having my head kicked in in all my years following the Villa.

Yeah, but not exactly "storming" to promotion, and usually hundreds rather than thousands.
