“Under O’Neill, Villa were known for signing big players at high fees........." Take out the word `big` and I can't disagree with you there Curtis.
http://www.sundaymercury.net/midlands-sport/west-bromwich-albion-fc/west-brom-news/2012/09/30/west-bromwich-albion-are-the-top-midlands-team-now-says-curtis-davies-66331-31934513/
West Bromwich Albion are the top Midlands team now says Curtis Davies
CURTIS Davies reckons Albion are the strongest team in the Midlands – not Villa, the team he once joined from the Baggies.
After years of living in their bitter rivals’ shadows, Davies believes the Black Country outfit are now the top dogs in the region and says they are favourites ahead of today’s derby clash at Villa Park.
“Right now, in the Midlands, Albion have to be the best team because of the way they’ve started and the way they finished last season,” he said.
“You have to say so, because they’ve got a very strong squad and have brought in some top players. You would be a liar if you said anything else.”
Davies, who now plays for Blues, left The Hawthorns in 2007 to join Villa in a deal worth more than £10 million.
His switch was one of many big-money buys during the Martin O’Neill era as Villa regularly enjoyed European football.
But since the Irishman left, the claret and blues have slowly declined while Albion have consolidated their Premier League status and kicked on.
And 27-year-old Davies reckons that times have changed because of the lower budget that current Villa boss Paul Lambert has to operate with.
“I think Albion have overtaken Villa,” he added. “Albion are progressing more whereas Villa’s stance is that they are trying to buy young players and redevelop.
“Under O’Neill, Villa were known for signing big players at high fees, now they’re trying to sign younger players like the Bennetts, the Lowtons, etc.”

Swap the word 'big' for 'pub'.
-
Albion have done well over the last few years but despite us having to revise our transfer expectations, did they buy anyone more expensive than Benteke or Vlaar?
I honestly don't take much notice so don't know.
-
Davies needs to realise he was a feckin waste of money and hes now found his playing level prick he is
-
What Davies and all these Baggies fans need to realize is that you don't become top dogs after beating us a couple of times and finishing above for the first time in 30 odd years.
Nevermind signing players for big fees when PL has gone and got Vlaar for half the price of that useless twat!
-
Jesus tity fucking Christ.
One wanky mid-table finish after years of playing 2nd or 3rd division football, followed by yo-yoing up and down is called "kicking on"?
They're all on glue.
-
As todays yoof would say........meh.

Spot on. We heard the same from Small Heath a few years ago, and look at them now.

Quite. Nothing screams "small time" more than taking beating us at home and finishing above us for the first time in over a quarter of a century as evidence of some kind of power shift.

Warnock Speaks, Big Eck Speaks and now £10m Curtis Davies Speaks. Lots of speaking going on. When Warnock is the one who speaks the most sense, you realise what a bunch of idiots we've had at our club in recent seasons.
-
When they are second to Everton in terms of top flight longevity, have added a few more pots and pans to the trophy cabinet and when I start to see Albion kits in every town over here in Ireland then, and only then, will I give any sort of careful consideration to his argument.
-
Let's be honest, Curtis Davies has always been a gobshite. If he played half as good a game as he talked he wouldn't be playing in the fizzy pop league with dog shite fc
-
What "top players" have they brought in then? I'm struggling. Top dogs my arse, most people outside of Brum don't even know where West fucking Bromwich is.
Of course, Davies wouldn't be saying this to try and earn some brownie points from the couple of thousand fans who now pay his wages would he. No, you'd be a cynic and a fool to think so.
-
They've got some good players. But I can't remember what any of them are called.
-
At some point in our lives, we have all made a ridiculous statement regarding football.
For some inexplicable reason, after the 4-2 home win vs Manchester City. A few years back, I declared Davies "An England captain in waiting"
Not one of my finest moves.
-

Gobshite is one of my favourite words in the English language,
Oi Davies, your a GOBSHITE !
-
You have to laugh at the cart horse.
Big players? I'd rather see us sign the 'Bennetts and the Lowtons" than spunk £10 million on a flat footed lummox who mistakenly thinks he's a world class centre half.
-
Just the tonic our players need.
come on Villa , hammer these f**kers today.
-
Who ask for his view :) Not me. We tried big spending on established players and it doesn't work. So we are trying a different way.
-
Big players? Mediocre players for big transfers and big wages. I don't remember us signing players like Henry, Van Persie or Rooney.
-
I suppose Dunne is a big player, then again we sold Big arsed Barry :o
-
I think you are all being very unkind. He is, after all, as thick as a brick
-
'Bitter rivals'???
-
Always liked Curtis and, whilst admitting he had the odd nightmare, never understood why people dislike him so much. Some of his performances were way better than anything Clarke has so far produced at centre back, yet the latter is strangely revered by some. However I agree he should talk less.

Maybe because he cost us £10m and played like, in his own words, a pub player.
As for him putting in better performances than Clarke - there's a reason they don't play in the same division.
-
what club is he at anyway ? not that I am really bothered .

My lasting memory of Curtis Davies was in that first game of the season against Wigan, where he went to head a long ball from one of their players, and just completely misjudged it and let it sail over his head. When he partnered Carlos Cuellar at centre back, we averaged three goals against for a good dozen or so games.

My lasting memory of him was that back pass against Vienna that he twatted out for a corner. It really was so bad.

By 'big' I think he meant tall, as in himself, Heskey, Harewood, Beye and Knight.

My abiding memory was when he needlessly tried to blast the ball of the Rapid player on the halfway line to get a throw in and totally missed him. The ball sails out for their corner to get the 2-2 goal.

The 'odd' nightmare? He was an absolute liability. Easier to count the half decent games he had, which were few and far between.
-
Didn't old Martin buy him after selling Cahill?

Well I disagree. I think he was okay in most of his games, excellent in a few and terrible in a few, especially when paired with Cuellar - yet Carlos is another that seems to escape blame despite frequent incompetence. From what I've seen of Clarke so far he's been a liability in many games, either at left back or centre back. And Curtis admitted he'd played like a pub player in one game - but the hard of thinking keep bringing it up as of he's condemned himself for all time. Curtis' problem was, and seemingly still is, being too outspoken, and the fact that the idiot O'Neill overpaid massively for him. People seem to have taken a dislike to him for that as much as anything.

Curtis Davies is clearly as shit at thinking and speaking as he is at defending.

A good move either way, ahem.
-
What a waste of money this bloke was, 10m when he'd played one premier league season (and probably about 10 more premier league games than Gary Cahill at the time who he replaced).
Tells you all that the only premier league club that want him are Norwich.
-
not sure what the issue is. can't disagree with what he said really

Yes it was extremely poor, the fact the worst thing he did was leave the Albion seems totally lost on him
-
I wonder if he's made any shots at his own goal that scraped the bar lately. Twat.
-
Davis was expensive and cack. The end.
-

It's a pity your actual English language skills are so poor.
It's 'you're'.

Who cares what he thinks? He's a semi-professional never-has-been. Idiot.
-
I remember him scoring at Anfield when i was sitting with the dipper home fans. I dont care how much he earns or costs in that respect, I would buy him a pint for his part in a memorable game
-

Yeah, their best player Lukaku is only on loan from Chelsea. Can't understand why he didn't start the match to be honest. When he came on he was a real handful for Vlaar and Clark.

Because he was less of a handful than Long?

I remember looking this up at the time. Their records in terms of games played in the top flight and then games played in the championship were virtually identical - somewhere between 28 and 30 top flight games each, I can't remember the number of championhip games. Cahill had scored more.
Whether O'Neill was right or wrong (badly wrong as it turned out) the disparity in transfer fees seemed very odd at the time.

I was told that MON's main objection to Cahill was that he was a "play it out of defence" type, whereas MON preferred them like Knight, Collins, Dunne - "row Z" types.
One thing about MON, he's stuck to his beliefs consistently for years now. Two big men at the back in the middle, full backs who concentrate on defending first and foremost, big man up front, wingers.

Morrison is easily Albion's best player.
He should be at a bigger club than them. I'd be most happy to see us sign him.

Thought their midfield three looked strong yesterday and I'd say that all three would probably get in our current team.

We've already paid for him.
Although the money didn't actually move for a year, at the same time we signed Curtis Davis, West Brom paid a reported 1.5 mill plus add-ons for Morrison.
We also forked out for Marlon F.H., Reo-Coker,Routledge and Salifou
-
Mulumbu is pretty good at what he does.
They signed him for what 1m ish?
We signed Reo-Coker for 8.5m.
-
Mulumbu cost £175k

I think he was in the boro youth team that stuffed is in the final , i remember him looking good then ( i should have been a scout)

Thought their Argentinian midfielder looked a decent player as well. On a more positive note, their squad is paper thin and a few injuries should see them really struggling.
-
To be fair, by half time they had 5 regulars missing. They'll do okay thisseason but it won't be too long before they find themselves back where they belong.
-
I've always liked Gera as a player, weren't we linked with him a few years back?
-
Gera's a smashing player, like you I've admired him for years. I'd love to see him at the Villa.
-
I'm going to have to dig out my son's programme from Sunday to remind myself who all these big players are who Albion have bought recently.
-
Seeing as Davies was rejected by the Villa as not good enough and use to play for the baggies and now plays for the scum ,it is no surprise he said what he did.
-

Agreed, but those thick feckers are probably sniffing wood glue.
-
I always say that Albion finishing above Villa happens as often as Halley's Comet appearing. It winds them right up.
-
One of them was giving it the top of the Midlands bollocks on Facebook earlier as well as how they are Villa's rivals. I mentioned that to me Albion are like Coventry, obsessed with us but we don't give a shit about them apart from when we play them. Although a smaller version of Coventry of course, as in my lifetime you've got a smaller ground, spent less seasons in the top flight and won less trophies.
Judging by his reply I think it wound him up even more than i'd hoped. Deluded stripey twat.
-
I'd forgotten Curtis Davies even existed until this thread.
