Guzan,Lowton,Vlaar,Clark,Bennet,KEA,Delph,Holman,Albrighton,Gabby,Benteke

Deservedly so. Interesting line up. I think as has been said each week, predicting the side is literally impossible.

Post by: Matt Collins on September 30, 2012, 03:19:56 PM
Delph and el ahmadi holding. Then it looks like albrighton, Holman, gabby behind benteke. So no bent, n'zogbia or bannan.

I guess it could be gabby up top and Holman left, or we could move to that during the game.

I'm not sure about that side in terms of the midfield.  Albrighton hasn't had a good game in months.

Plus I've got bent as my fantasy football captain!

Bloody hell. Lambert really likes to rotate his squad.

I just hope KEA,Delph,Holman and Albrighton can do enough to win the battle in midfield.

Glad to see Gabby back, he looked fearless on Tuesday night.

Interesting team, like Albrighton so fingers crossed for a good game. Put 5op on Bannan and 2-0 for my duaghter so a 2-0 single it is. Come on you Villa boys.

Albrighton hasn't had a good game in months.

In his defence, he hasn't actually played a competitive match in months.

Very happy for Albrighton. I felt he lost his way a little after a great start to his career. He has the right environment and manager to get things back on track.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v W.B.A. Match Thread
Post by: Matt Collins on September 30, 2012, 03:25:47 PM
I imagine we've matched up to their 4231. Hopefully we can get gabby in support of benteke. He certainly should hold the ball up better than bent

This team is similarl to the side that plate citeh. Great result, but watching the highlights, citeh really didn't seem to have much intensity to their game. Today will be different!

Nervous!

I like the look of that team - should be an interesting game.  Assume that he has Delph and Holman in there to try and close the space in midfield and get amongst them.  Looking fwd to watching Gabby and Benteke upfront together.

I like the look of that team. Midfield looks far more solid and better balanced than usual. I hope it is Gabby up front with Benteke. Playing in that position at Eastlands gave more than a glimpse of what he can be really good at.

I am not sure whether Lambertoni is rotating, experimenting or has refined his ideas as to what he thinks his best team is.

I thought so too from the distance he was away fro the ball and the camera was from the players, but he clearly won the ball and had studs low when he caught the player. This was shown clearly on the same view the ref would have seen it.

Gabby and Holman the pick from an attacking sense thus far

I enjoyed that.  Getting crosses into the box at every opportunity, running at players - great stuff.  Lacked composure up front but we've always got Bent to bring on.

It's early days obviously but at the moment Benteke looks more a physical presence than he does a finisher.

Created some chances and decent overall. Benteke has been very uncomposed. Holman excellent and gabby started very well.

Kea has Ben playing well too. I think the stage might be set for bent to get the winner. I wonder how long before he comes on?

Think Clark and vlaar have looked compose. delph decent, but why does he dawdle on the ball and go on recklessly at least once every game?
Title: Re: Aston Villa v W.B.A. Match Thread
Post by: paul_e on September 30, 2012, 04:50:43 PM
With Benteke I don't see much point in playing a striker who doesn't back himself with half a goal to aim at, 15 yards out and on his stronger foot.

Yeah he missed but I've got no issue with him taking the shot on, it's exactly what you want a striker to do.

Having seen most of the first half we should be ahead, need a goal early 2nd half or they'll start to think they can nick it.

Good first half after the first 5 or 10 mins when we looked ragged.  We are playing some nice football and getting stuck in.  Benteke needs to be given a chance before being made a figure of ridicule.  He has been mixed, but he;s 21 and looks far more effective than, say, the Fonz who is the same age.

West Brom the first 10, Villa that last 35. Holman is my hero, Gabby looks hungry, Delph better than I thought, Benteke needs time, full backs need to get forward a touch more. All in all a millions times more pleasing on the eye and a team in the making...Reasonably happy lets just get a goal or 2 lads  :D

I don't think he does but I think refs are of the same opinion.  Not many players would've got a yellow for the tackle he was booked for, was very harsh.

As for dawdling, I only saw that once (I'm cooking as well so missed bits of the half) and I thought he was clearly fouled that time but the ref waved it on.

We're playing pretty well, it has to be said.

You can tell, though, that these are still early days for us with this style of play - there are frequent reminders of that in terms of misplaced passes, and you can see Albion feel more comfortable playing that way, as they've been doing it for a while now.

Benteke is making a nuisance of himself, and perhaps needs to learn when to shoot and when to give the ball to someone else, but that's largely youthful exuberance, I think.

Holman just never stops running, and that was a quality shot that Foster tipped over from him.

All in all, good stuff, but we could do with three points here.

A very enjoyable half of football. Benteke is very eager to please, and I think that's affecting his instincts. He should have gone straight for goal with his last effort. We're causing them problems, but we'll need to make our chances count.

We are going to need to score a lot of goals this season due to flakey defending and we lack creators and scorers in form.

Gabby is the only one who started this match who started last seasons loss. Shows how much has changed in the space of 10 months.
Lambert and his players have been there 5 minutes! Chin up

Sorry, that was what I was getting at. On comparison Baggies have seven starters from last seasons match.

So far this season, Baggies have scored only one first half goal so they do lift themselves for the second half. But the second league match on the trot for us to have a bad second half.
