Villa's Stephen Warnock insists he causes no trouble
Stephen Warnock today insisted he was “not a troublemaker” at Villa after he spoke for the first time about being frozen out by manager Paul Lambert.
The left-back was forced to train with the Villa development squad before he joined Championship side Bolton on a three-month loan deal last week.
Lambert’s decision to ask him to train with the youth teamers puzzled Warnock but the 30-year-old does not bear a grudge with the Scot.
“Myself and Alan Hutton had been deemed surplus to requirement,” explained Warnock.
“The manager had his own way of doing things but I’m not looking back at that now. It was difficult but you’ve got to respect the fact each manager makes his own decisions.
“I’m not a troublemaker or anything like that, so I’d like to think I could have trained with the first team, but that’s the manager’s decision and he has his own way of doing things.
“I think the way I look at it now is that my time at Villa has probably passed, so things have to move on. As soon as you get told you’re surplus to requirements, you are a footballer and you want to get out and play football.”
-
Fair enough, I've said it before but I respect the way he rolled up his sleeves last season and gave it a go when suffering a complete lack of form.

I agree
-
He’s said the right things there. In many ways it’s nice to hear a footballer saying he just wants to play football.
Lambert has balls of steel. Whilst Hutton and Warnock were shit/out of form last year he has completely jettisoned them and trusted his judgement with Lowton and Licaj/Bennett. Few managers would be that brave/stupid.
-
Agree with PW and SG. I don't think he could help being crap, but at least he tried.

Totally. He never went hiding, even after the QPR og.
-
Respect for Warnock he is not a big mouthed big wage footballer who causes problems for a club. On his debut against the noses he Collins and Dunne were brilliant and showed total commitment. Good luck .....
-
He was an integral part of the side back in 09-10. It's such a shame to see the way it all unravelled since then.
-
He's always come across as a consummate professional, and a nice guy. The only thing that ever annoyed me about him was his tendency to pretend he had an injury if he'd made a mistake that led to a goal.
-
Fair enough.
-
He is a good guy and obviously professional. His best days are behind him but good luck to him for the future.
-
I've never seen a professional footballer's form go backwards as quickly as Warnock's did. From the England squad to putting in League 1 standard performaces in a few short months.
-
Utter bullshit. Troublemaker - Yes. Unprofessional - Yes.
Good riddance to the clown.
-
If someone insists "he's not a trouble maker" that probably means he is either in his or his teamates' opinions.

Absolutely - it's like countries that include 'democratic' in their official name, they're generally anything but democratic.

We should take a vote on that
-
Irrespective of what he's said, there has to be something else behind the scenes. Two managers have completely dumped him. And as a premier league player that still has something to offer in terms of years left, he's been literally ignored by the entire league as a permanent transfer. Lambert came in willing to give players a chance yet within weeks had seen enough or heard enough to consider him surplus to requirements.
-
Maybe he just is not good enough and for a brief period MON did what he did best which was make a terrible player look half decent. After his injury and he was rushed back he then could not raise his game to that level again.
Like others have said though for him to keep battling after that QPR game does show he has some guts about him.
-
Can't feel too sorry for him. He was tapped up by Bolton last season (see end of Villa Park highlights where Owen Coyle consoles Warnock). The only reason he didn't go there was because they were relegated. Still didn't stop him going there on loan.
Always gave his all, just a shame that his all wasn't very good.
-
I've never had a problem with him.
-
I've never had a problem with him.
Not even when he made those horrendous gaffes last season?
Be off with you Stumpy and take that Deep fried Mars bar munching Motherfucker with you (Hutton).
-
As others have said two managers have completely ostracised him, I'm sure for some reason(s). I also cannot see Lambert coming in and not giving anyone a fair crack of the whip, though maybe he saw enough during our horror show at Carrow Rd last season. I think we are well rid of him, now if only we could find a home for the other one......
-
Lambert had a look at Warnock in preseason, I think that was enough! From what I saw he was worse than last season.
-
I'm sure the truth will come out once he's finally off the books.
-
Out of the two omnishambles to have recently managed us, Houllier's Villa diary would be the most interesting.
TSM seems to be serialising his already, and it should be in the fantasy section anyway. The knob.
Sorry, this relates to Silhillvilla's post about the truth coming out, in case you were wondering.

For every mistake he made, I always felt he gave 100%, plenty of other players hid away over the last 2 seasons but I never felt he did.
-
I think he did a lot of hiding and not giving 100%.
He ambled his way through games, showed no hunger or desire, very much went through the motions as if his job was a chore and he couldnt wait to head home up the M6.
-
As someone who is aware of Warnocks rant, just because he wouldn't move to within half an hour of his workplace.. To then slag my city off! He responded by playing fuckin shite. One goal against Bolton would never be enough.. Hate the ****** with a passion.
-
I think best for both parties that he has gone and won't come back.

MON's diary, May to August 2010 would be an interesting read too.

My thoughts as well. He was solid up until the League Cup Final, then totally and utterly shit afterwards.

I've never quite accepted that headed own goal v QPR (it was so difficult to pull off, given that he needed to get his head down almost to the ground and place it in the far corner). It happened in the home game immediately following his previous attempted headed own goal against Everton (Given manged to pull off a great save on that one). Both were headers, in the first half, defending the Holte End. Quite a coincidence in my opinion, given that a striker would have been proud of each effort had they been at the opposition's end!
Against QPR he went on to play very well as we fought back to 2-2 but I have often wondered about the motivation for those two headers!
-
I think his confidence was shot. I’ve played football at a shit level and once your confidence has gone even the simplest of passes is a mission. As soon as the pass is not instinctive and you’re thinking about it, too slow, you’re fucked.
In a weird way, I do not think we helped Warnock recover. Someone of this parish mentioned when they met him that he said “all Villa fans hate me”. Whilst not true, he had that impression.
On the flip side I think Lambert’s philosophy of signing unknown players on their way up may help here as - as long as we’re behind Lambert - the Lowtons will be given the benefit of the doubt compared to an 8M Warnock. It’s easier to excuse a youngster compared to a player who is earning more a week than most of us do a year...
-
Thought he was no more than average at Blackburn. Remember Milner tearing him a new one at Ewood Park a few months before he joined. Then he surprised initially at Villa by being half decent. Valencia destroyed him in that Carling Cup final and he got steadily worse for the rest of his career at the club.
The player I remember used be down on the ground getting treatment in each game. Typically after a daft mistake, his predictable limp would develop. He is such a brainless player. Diving in constantly was his trademark.
Sure his confidence went to bits but the fact he was anywhere near the English squad was down to the lack of decent players available. His former teammate Ivanhoe was also part of that squad.
The signing of both players summed up MON's legacy to the club

Conspiracy theories ? Malaysian bookies ?

Sihillvilla, be very careful or Stephen Warnock may be getting a payout from you.

Very true, no accusations made. But with two bizarre headed attempts (one successful/unsucessful depending on your point of view) in such similar circumstances, so proximate in time, there is nothing the Thought Police can do to stop people wondering.

Got lobbed straight into the Bolton team yesterday, the inevitable booking followed.

I said conspiracy theory ? I don't think he meant it at all. I think he was trying to head back to Given but his confidence was shot to pieces.
-
Warnock infuriated me I must admit. His boneheaded challenge that gave Chelsea a penalty in their 7-1 win I remember vividly and his incredible own goal (after his dress rehearsel two weeks earlier) makes me grit my teeth every time I think of it.
On the other hand, as has been said, he never hid, and he scored a decent goal against Bolton before they beat us 2-1 and sealed TSM's fate.
-
The performance against Forest in pre season was the final straw for me!! he was useless, and that is being kind to him.

He had been promised a big payout by the team producing the next "Football Bloopers" DVD? I reckon this is a good question to ask though. I'm officially interested!

Although that second paragraph is hardly a ringing endorsment.

Heh. Stephen Warnock caught out of position so Zat Knight could give away the penalty...
