1-0 Villa, Benteke 58.

They don't travel as well as they perform at home and last night will have given us a confidence boost.

God knows what Villa team will turn up. I don't know whether it's the scent of last nights victory still wafting around my nostrils making be say crazy stuff,  but I think we'll have a good win against a good Baggies team.
Gabby needs to start, not sure who will have to be dropped though.....
2-0 Villa...Gabby, Benteke.

Hope the rollercoaster pattern doesn't go 1 poor game/1good game/1 poor game etc.  I think this will be an entertaining 2-2 draw. The key word for me is entertaining, which has been lamentably absent from Villa Park for so long prior to the arrival of PL.

This is the biggest game in football. We must show them what pain means.

Remember Ally Brown breaking Alex Cropley's leg. Remember Hitzlsperger winning it in the last minute. Remember Collymore scoring a penalty, then standing in front of their fans with his arms spread wide.

As so many people have said, who knows with the way things are going? May end up losing 3-0! Hopefully we'll see a similar performance to the Swansea game. In some ways it was easy up there with the pressure off.

On another note for anyone who watched it, what sort of performance was it last night? Did we try and pass it like against Swansea? Or more direct like against Southampton?

Predicted outcome according to gravel voiced American singers:

Aston Villa - On The Road Again (Willie Nelson)

Handsworth Albion - Desolation Row (Bob Dylan)

(Apparently this equates to a 2-0 victory)

3-1 Villa. Difficult to predict scorers because I'm pleased to say we now have both competition for places and a manager who isn't slow to change the team. But on the subject of goalscorers I think our two last night were probably the two that most needed a goal to give them a lift and hopefully kick-start their seasons.

It will be interesting to see how a Lambert teams plays in a derby.

I expect us to be fired up for this one and with confidence being high too, I am hoping for a good performance. Ultimately, its all about the result against these uppity Mickey Mouse wankers.

There is a real dilemma for Lambert as to who he starts up front. Gabby looked like the unstoppable, defence molesting, beast he was a few years ago last night. Working very hard, working the channels and causing defenders to back pedal at a rate of knots.

He scores in the key games, always had. He is the anti-Ronaldo. He must start for me. As to Benteke, I love the way the guy draws others into play. He has excellent vision and rarely recycles possession and his sheer presence is a worry for the opposition, so he has to start too.

Do we leave out Bent and keep the diamond or do we go 4-3-3?

Delph also looked decent last night as did CNZ. Both should start. But then we need Holman’s running in midfield and KEA to screen and tick things over.

Decisions, decisions, decisions…

We should win, dpendent on which Villa team turns up, Soton or Mancs. But as its a local derby will probably end up a draw.

I'd go

Guzan
Lowton Vlaar Clark Bennett
Holman KEA Delph N'Zog
Gabby Bent

Subs, Given, Baker, Herd, Bannan, Albrighton, Benteke, Weimann (Bit harsh on Lichaj)

I'll go one one Benteke.

3-1 to Villa.

Gabby brace and Bent.

Someone posted last week that under Paul Lambert its going to be a roller coaster ride this season.

That being the case I see the Baggies going 5-0 up after 30mins and after a couple of clever tactical changes at half time Villa storm back to win 6-5!

Or something like that.  I dont think this one will be the usual 0-0 or 1-1 local derby. I predict a goal fest.

Same team for me.

Gabby and Benteke did more than enough to keep the shirt, as did Charlie. Bent has to wait his turn now, but will be back I am sure soon enough.

Weimann on the bench too though. He played ok last night and worked hard from reports.

some wanker wearing a Tesco bag for a shirt.

Shall we all bring a Tesco bag to wave at them like dirty flags each time we score and sing T-E-S-C-O (like D-I-S-C-O)?

I'm bringing my 7 year old boy to his first ever game on Sunday. Holte Lower, L6 row Q. We'll bring four, one for each hand.

4-3, I reckon. I foresee a free-scoring, high tempo, open match with some good football played by both sides. Not sure who'll make our eleven, but there will be goals from everywhere - a defender (Vlaar), a set piece (Vlaar again), a midfielder (El-Ahmadi) and a forward (Benteke). Don't care who scores for them, as long as we score one more than they do Felix & I will be happy boys.

I reckon Bent should be dropped too. Not only are Gabby and Benteke looking more of a threat but  the way our Dazza strolled through the second half at Soton had all the hallmarks of a man in need of a bloody good kick up the arse.

Prediction 3-1 Villa. Clark, Gabby and the beast of Belgium. Olson for them.

It really depends on what side and tactics Lambert selects. I'm less worried about the team selection, more the tactics, as the Southampton game showed, get them wrong and you're buggered.

I'm going for a 1-0 Villa win, Holman to score a cracker. I get the feeling we'll see the best of Villa under Lambert at Villa Park.

From the vaults....

The fact that every time the Hawthorns gets near capacity they can't cope, the Alex Cropley game when they set out for ninety minutes to kick anything in claret and blue, Alan Baker, John Woodward, Ray Graydon, their sanctimonious holier-than-thou we're only a little team and we're going to enjoy ourselves everybody likes us attitude, the fact that their most famous supporter made a career out of humiliating their most famous ex-player - a man who it is now known was suffering from a degenerative brain disease, their absolute hatred of us (and me or Coops can supply a list of places to pop into before or after the match for anyone who thinks that they're all nice and friendly), the time we beat them 7-2 in a reserve match then in the return a month later they had nine of their first team playing because they couldn't bear losing again, their pretence of being nowhere near Birmingham despite their post code and phone number, their stupid jumping up and down and making twats of themselves in the name of atmosphere, letting the likes of Soccer AM makes fools of them and degrading all football supporters everywhere by implication, still going on about Ronnie Allen and 1959 like it's the most important thing to ever happen in their sad, woebegotten lives and it probably is, not being able to get a drink anywhere near the ground, constant whining of it ay fair and the world's against them, just watch tomorrow how many of them blame the referee for all seventeen of our goals, moaning that the local press are biased against them despite the fact that they've got more supporters in the media than us and Small Heath put together, Adrian Chiles, Skinner again, endlessly complaining that they would have won the league in 1979 if the weather hadn't turned cold in January like it wasn't the same for every other club in the first division, bleating on and on and on about how loyal they are just because their crowds didn't get as low as the Wolves like that makes any difference, having the highest percentage of middle aged fat blokes walking round supermarkets in football shirts of anywhere in the world including Newcastle, having a civic reception for finishing third in the third division, showing Ossie Ardiles what Smethwick looks like from the top of a double decker bus then wondering why he fecked off the next week, every time a player leaves them they always moan he's only gone for the money even when they're swapping Smethwick for Madrid, Willie Johnstone, that bloody stupid bird stuck on the top of the scoreboard, those executive boxes with corrugated iron roofs, playing the Liquidator just like their big bad rivals in the Stadium of Yellow, that stupid metal sheeting at the back of the old away end that meant I missed every goal when we were three up at half time there, having to play in the morning in the FA Cup 1990, the half time message in the second division "Will Villa supporters please move forward, there are still some trying to get in", boasting about giving a policeman brain damage at Villa Park in 1978 but they're still nice & friendly, being surrounded by the bastards in the Witton Lane stand in 1974, never enough buses back down Holyhead Road, being the only local league club to insist on playing Birmingham Senior Cup games at home and thus depriving the local non-league teams of a decent gate, thinking they have a God-given right to park anywhere they like and moaning when they get tickets for parking on double yellow lines, you can bet there'll be more face paint and stupid wigs per supporter than at any other ground in the country and I include Newcastle in that again, the six wankers shouting their gobs off on the bus when I was going back home after the game in 1982, the very quiet one who was left when his five mates got off, the 1887 cup final when they planned to get the train back via Worcester to avoid travelling through Birmingham with the cup, except the cup went straight back to Aston without them ha fucking ha, coming up and saying that they weren't going to spend any money because they wanted to go straight back down and use the parachute payments to get back again, Skinner and Chiles walking up and down Witton Lane looking for camera crews, making out Bryan Robson was a returning hero when they'd hated him ever since he left, forgetting now that they wanted him hung a month after he became manager, the day they stayed up and reckoned everybody in the country loves them because they're such a nice inoffensive club with wonderful fans, having to get coaches to come three miles down Island Road, that fucking sanctimonious Grorty Dick fanzine that used to call us arrogant yet made out that they were such a big club, then had a celebration issue when they beat us in a youth match I kid you not, being the only Villa supporter in a school of 1,600 of the bastards when they didn't care about Wolves, getting a manager sacked because of a low crowd for a pre-season friendly, Alex Cropley again, Eric Clapton and I'm sure UB40 used to say they supported them when they were good, the fucking Albion that is not UB40, having their end named after a city they hate, an evening paper that treats playing Manchester United in the league in the same patronising way that Kidderminster Harriers would get in the FA Cup, Jim Cumbes dropping down two divisions because our crowds were bigger, treating reserve matches as something really big and important, having a shopping centre in the town and gates at their ground named after a player who scored in a cup final and cost England the World Cup, this supposed 'big club' making a fuss of winning the third division play-offs, Terry Wills who although he is a very nice man should be told that he does not have to go on every radio station after every match, asking us to play friendlies and still treating our supporters like shit, wanting every manager sacked after three defeats, Bob Taylor, every one of their supporters over fifty was at the ground when they relegated us in 1959 and will talk forever about it but none of them remembers us stopping them winning the league four years earlier, you're not telling me it's a coincidence that Alistair Fucking Brown got a job working for them after his thuggish career was mercifully brought to an end, knowing more about how Bayern Munich should have won the European Cup in 1982 than Bayern Munich do, my irritating little shit of a cousin who used to support Manchester United then got a season ticket up there when they got into the Premier League, including Prisoner 820468 Hughes, L, in a book called Cult Heroes and I bet the family of the bloke he killed have got a better and similar description for him, some knobhead I heard saying all he wanted to do when they went down was come back up win the cup and kick fuck out the Villa then talked about football for ten minutes and never once went off the subject of how much he hates us, I bet that Everton fan they blinded thinks they're lovely, a town centre where the best pub is a Wetherspoon's and the best restaurant is McDonalds, how every time we beat them and there's a lot to choose from they always complain that they'd rather lose than play like us like they have a choice, putting reserve teams out in games they're going to lose anyway but it's alright for them to do it, every time they come up saying they don't intend to spend any money because we're only a little team and we're doing ever so well to be here in the first place, Tony Mowbray always claiming moral victories..

Midfield is the key area on Sunday.  If we can get control in that area, I'll think we'll beat them.  In all honesty, they are a mid-table team who have had a couple of decent results at the start of the season.  They aren't great in the full-back areas and haven't really got any top quality strikers.  Would definitely start Gabby after his performance the other night and would also start Bennett is he is isn't injured.

The closest they have to top forward is suspended. I suppose there's Lukaku, but he's raw and I'd take Benteke over him right now to be honest. Gabby should start on form but fitness is another issue, he's been injured and he played the full 120, so we'll see how he is.

Gabby has to start. He's been showing signs of his old self and the other night was really great to see. He had one of his unplayable games. Not sure who'd I'd drop out of Bent or Benteke, but possibly Bent, as Gabby can play off the big man well.

Is there a chance Ireland can play with a cast? I assumed he'd be out for a few weeks

I really don't know who he'll play. I agree that as ever midfield is key and I do worry about our midfield being pretty ordinary. KEA can do it when the game pace is slower, but I think he's really struggled in higher intensity games. And this will be a high intensity game.

I think that means Holman has to play. I'd probably play delph and kea in the middle, with holman right. Bannan could play left, but I'd be tempted tobplay CNZ to give us more of an attack minded side. That way, we could easily switch to 4312 with CNZ in the hole.

I imagine lambert intended to play bent and benteke, but gabby's given him something to think about. I don't think gabby can play the role I've suggested for CNZ but I wonder if lambert will try that? Otherwise, I think I'd play gabby and bent, but it's a tough choice.

If the villa that turned up against Swansea play, then we will win.  If its the villa that played against Southampton in the 2nd half then we will lose.  Its going to be a tough game.

Im going to stay positive and say Villa to win 2-1

Bit harsh on Herd and the newboys Bowery and Westwood, but just shows what strength in depth we have now, with Dunne and Ireland to return soon hopefully as well.  The younger players like Carruthers, Johnson, Stevens, Williams, Burke and Gardner (when fit) are going to have to work extremely hard to get near the squad, maybe they'd benefit from going out on loan.

I'm really really nervous about this weekend, a result here would really set us up nicely aside from the obvious bragging rights. West Brom are genuinely playing well this season and I think it's largely due to their midfield, Morrison in particular looks good. Having said that with their best player out I would hope we could reduce them to pot shots and as long as they don't fluke one early I think we'll edge it.

At the risk of upsetting the politicaly correct, and for this I apologise in advance.
We need an atmosphere of note, they may not concern us as much as the Heathan,s from Small Heath but we have had our moments.

In the 70,s many great games, 77/78 home 3.0 I think this was the game Alex (jaws) Cropley had his leg broken 41,000 at the game a significant number at Witton station after the game wishing them Bon Voyage and enjoy the trip back to new street.
At the end of the season we beat them 3-0 at their dump in front of 35,000 which had to be a record crowd for them
In season 74/75, March at home. I apologise again for being a 18 year old naughty steamer that did not know better,
About a thousand Villa fans set out their stall in (the open air) Witton end to greet our Black country cousins,  after normal greetings had been exchanged West Midlands Finest decided that we should walk off around the pitch back into the Holte End.
The game was about 5 mins on,47,000 in Villa Park The Holte (bad guys) Roared, burn Albion, burn, never come up the Holte end.
That game had to be one of the top 10 atmosphere,s I have ever seen at Villa Park.
Call to arms on Sunday, roar on the Villa, burn Albion, burn.

I shall be watching and cheering.

UP the Villa

Bent is in a position he never expected. Lambert will be watching his reaction in training. Every player is fighting for a starting place and they all know that they have to give 100% to be considered. This is a game where Holman will be crucial with his work rate and passion. Benteke is the awkward player you need in a derby and brings in other players like Gabby and Bent. Vlaar and Benteke up for corners on a WBA weakened defence should provide goals. 3-1 with a confident, battling performance .................

Such a refreshing change from the crushing inevitability of last season. I think we could win 4-0, equally we could loose by the same score, although I don't want such a situation to persist for too long the reason we watch sport it for it's ability to surprise and delight and I just hope it's delight we feel come 6pm on Sunday.

I haven't known us to be in a position like this, squad-wise, in a long time.   Now, that's not me going over the top and saying that we have a world-beating team all of a sudden, what I mean is we have genuine competition for places all over the side.  There's so much potential.

I'm wondering if Lambert had his eye on the Villa situation long before he got the job because he seems to have known right from the word go all the player/squad issues that needed to be addressed and he has got down to sorting them all out in double, double quick time.

2-1 win.

I'd actually start Gabby on the left as Billy Jones at RB is their weak link imo, pretty dodgy whe people run at him. Apparently Ridgewell is injured aswell so not sure who'll play at left back.

Fancy a dodgy decision to hurt WBA aswell to balance out that ridiculous Herd red card last season that swung the game in their favour (although I suppose the ref missing the Hutton handbal at their place probably balanced that out).

Both teams should've had a penalty at their place last season. Ollson (I think) stopped a shot from Clark with his hand, which evened up the Hutton handball, which granted, was more blatant.

The midfield line-up against Man City appeared to have a much better balance than the one that played Southampton. The same is true of the strike force.

I would certainly retain Delph and also start with Gabby/Benteke up front.

No hoofball and we will piss this one. West Brom have had their early season 15 minutes of fame, time for the cream to rise and the shit to sink.

I think this is how I'd go. We could easily switch CNZ to the left and play a more conventional 442 for parts of the game

Very much unsure about the strike combination to play but that's a nice problem to have. He may play all 3 with gabby in the CNZ position but I have me doubts about that

I quite like the Albion. They are never a threat to us, they usually roll over and give us 6 points a season or safe passage into the next round of the cup. They are in awe of Villa and dont even dare to argue about our respective 'powers'.
They know their place in the pecking order of midlands football, (a distant second behind Villa) and tend to beat our rivals when we need them to. (eg Ipswich in 81).
Of course this view may change if they dont play ball today and give up the 3 points on offer......  ::)

I wish that whinging horror rag would just naff off.

Bloody guardian ! Left wing scum waging class war against long established football aristocracy.

Somebody must be editing my copy before I get to read it because I can't say i've noticed. Having said that my local newsagent is a Villa fan so...
