We'll lose, but at least we can then start concentrating on the all important 40 points for safety.

Everytime we go there I always come out with the same line "We must keep it tight for the first twenty minutes and not conceed", unfortunately were usually 2 down by that point. I'd show the lads a video of 94 and 96 and let them know what this competition means to this club. However 3-0 City.

I just hope for some positives.
Probably go 3 down then hopefully with the pressure off, we can start to play some football and a couple of goals to give us back some confidence.
A morale-boosting 2-3 or 2-4.

Sadly for yet another season of the only trophy we coud win, it has to be cliched damage limitation, then concentrate on the league. May as well give game time to reserves: Given, Herd, Bennett, Baker, Vlaar, Delph, Westwood, Nzogbia, Bannan, Gabby, Benteke.

I'm going to try to pretend this match isnt happening and stumble across the scoreline on SSN after the final whistle...hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised that not only did we have a game but we beat Citeh at the Etihad! Who am I kidding...I'll be listening to us putting in a battling performance but ultimately on the wrong end of one sided looking scoreline on WM.

Went for a Villa win in normal time.  Don't know why, but I've had a good feeling about this since the draw came out.

1-2.  Vlaar early from a set piece, then Gabby catches them on the break.  They get one back making for a nail biting ending, but we hold out.

Tough decision for Lambert tomorrow in regards to what team he puts out.  With our next game being on Sunday, I think we go there with a fairly strong side, but also use it as an opportunity to give one or two a start.  I would go with a team looking something like:

                  Given

Lowton  Vlaar Baker Bennett

Holman  El Ahmadi Delph  N'Zogbia

              Gabby   Bent

Would be very nice to get a result and go through, but a good performance is important after the debacle on Saturday.

From the Birmingham Mail

PAUL Lambert has promised Villa will be “up for it” at Manchester City tonight after pledging to name a strong team capable of progressing in the Capital One Cup.

Stephen Ireland will not play against his former club at the Etihad Stadium after injuring his arm last weekend, while Ashley Westwood and Jordan Bowery are cup-tied.

But Lambert insists the line-up he selects for this evening’s third round tie will be competitive enough to challenge Roberto Mancini’s multi-million pound players.

Lambert will tell his unfancied team they have nothing to lose against the Premier League champions as they try to bounce back from their 4-1 defeat at Southampton.

Mancini is expected to make wholesale changes from Sunday’s 1-1 home draw against Arsenal in order to prioritise their top flight and Champions League campaigns.

“Nobody will expect anything from us, other than ourselves, but you go up there and you go and try and win,” said Lambert.

“I’m not going to change my ideas.

“We’re going to go and try and win against one of the best teams in Europe regardless of what personnel they have out.

Charlie needs to start in the hole, as I think he will be stepping in for Ireland.

You would have thought Ireland would have been sent for an X Ray on the Saturday but its unclear whether the club has taken this action yet two days later.

A little strange dont you think?

A good trouncing here, God knows by what, at least 3 or 4 goals. I just don't trust the character of this team yet, this will take time for Lambert to instill and get rid of the jitters when we go behind in games. They will be still rattled and nervy from Saturday.

I think someone mentioned before showing them videos of 94 and 96. Big Ron out-manoeuvred fergie in 94 against the odds. They should definitely have this match on the bus on the trip up to gorton.

------------Guzan

Lowton-Vlaar-Baker-Bennett

-------Westwood-KEA

Weimann-N'Zogbia-Gabby

----------Benteke

Weimann deserves to play, Gabby and N'Zogbia have things to prove. Clark I can't decide yet, but I do like Baker and Bent well I'd sell at first opportunity.

Guzan, Lowton, Vlaar, Clark, Bennett, Holman, Delph, El Ahmadi, Agbonlahor, Bent, Benteke.

Might get overrun in midfield but not much option, as Bannan needs dropping (and wouldn't stop us getting overrun anyway) and Ireland is injured.

3-1 Man City i'm afraid.

I really hope we shake off whatever it was that caused us to give up on Saturday. We looked really fragile.
Pull yourselves together lads, give 100% for the full ninety ( as you should every game this season) and whatever the result we will back you.
If its 2-0 do your best to keep playing so it doesn't get worse.
I fear even so..City by three.

yes saturdays result and moreso the performance put a massive dent in my confidence, i probably thought we were a bit further on than that result showed, obviously not, so i can only expect a loss tonight,

but as others have said, we do need a better performance, hopefully getting back to the passing game that was getting us somewhere i thought, and 100% effort from all the team

it will be difficult to know what sort of team PL picks, whether he makes changes to give squad players a go or if they are in because of last sats performance

It's maybe a question of semantics, but McGrath was in a class of his own in terms of modern Villa players.  I'd call him legendary, or world class.  And yes, I thought Staunton was a great player for us, we certainly haven't had a better left back since.

Staunton just used to get on my nerves, one of the things that wound me up was his corners, trying to score seemingly every time. Saw his brother play a trial match for the reserves, I assume it was a favour called in because he was useless.

In summary, don't like Staunton but he's better than his brother.
