Hopefully Ireland will put in a better performance than he did last week.
I would have liked to see Bennett in for Lichaj but glad to see Benteke start.
Come on you Lions.

#AVFC bench: Given, Bowery, Agbonlahor, N'Zogbia, Weimann, Westwood and Bennett

Not many attacking options there.

Bennett is an attacking FB and everyone else is a forward or midfielder. Given must feel well left out. What a welcome change from just a few months ago.

We cannot take this game for granted because we're not remotely good enough for that. We need to keep building on the last two promising games. If we put in the same kind of performance as we did at Newcastle it will be more than enough to win this.

Then we go with a different system, maybe 3 at the back and 5 midfielders working their bollocks off. I don't think you need dedicated defenders to be strong defensively. In fact, when it comes to work rate even adding someone like Gabby helps as the opposition can't be be too expressive for fear of being caught out by his pace. There's a lot of things you can do.

I suppose Lichaj and Lowton can both play in several defensive positions so if a defender does get crocked we just bring Bennett on and reshuffle.

If lowton gets injured bennet on at Lb, lichaj to RB.
If one of the CB's gets injured lowton to move to CB bennet LB, Lichaj RB.

"Empty seats my Lord"

And just like teams did to us at Villa Park last year we have to take advantage of the fading/depressed support at Southampton. Which for a team just back in the PL I find very surprising irrespective of how they have started. If we can get ahead here we can take their fans right out if the game.

I'm getting a bit uncertain about kea. I don't think he protects the space in front of the back four, and he's struggling with the pace of games a bit I think.

I really wish we'd try and get it down a bit. We're trying to go too direct. I expected to be more impressed. Hopefully we can get some more composure

It's remarkable the amount of harrying and chasing down we do when there's either a loose ball to go for, or when they have the ball - it opens up so many more opportunities when you force errors and actuallly win the ball back like that.

OK, take a 1-0 lead at HT.  We're slightly fortunate to be a goal up, but it looks like things are going our way at the moment. And the one player we needed to bag a goal, got one.

Hopefully their "season starts here" comments and the pressure they brought make them really nervy in the second half and they gift us another couple.

Wouldn't say we have any weak links, all of them have worked their bollocks off. Just need a little more composure and to start to knock it to Benteke's feet, hold it up and build off him.

I can see Gab coming on the last 15 and using his turbo's though.

Lambert is like the anti-AVB. All the talk of AVB is how he has a tactic and style of play and he makes his team suit it. Lambo has many styles, tactics and plans. Much rather such a versatile manager and style of play than stick to one style and hope it works.

He has given the ball away nearly everytime he's had it and he goes into challenges with all the steel and commitment of Stewart Downing. That was an attempt at goal by him (that he made a bollocks of) that led to our goal.

Our best pass completion ration is KEA with 77 percent which is pretty damning in terms of how much we've given the ball away.

Second is Guzan with 75 percent.

This sums up the enigma of Ireland.... some will say he made the goal while others will say his lack of composure meant he had screwed his shot badly wide before DB redirected it goalwards.

Horses for courses gents.

Southampton are flooding midfield and pushing both full backs up.

So hardly surprising we are struggling in middle - can't blame anyone other than the shape.

The two big men ain't working too well - we need possession - so maybe Big Ben will come off and little Andy W come on?

Andy will link better with midfield leaving DB to occupy the two CB's.

Either way - we not playing very well but we winning.  Make a nice change.

Well I think we've had some pretty damn good second halves under Lambert this season. I'm hoping for another one here as I feel a bit deflated at the moment. We were so bloody good towards the end against Swansea.

Think Soton have probably been better than us so far but 1-0 up so hopefully we'll build and start knocking the ball around better.

If we're still leading towards the end, we definitely have the strikers to do damage on the counter.

We're going to have plenty of ups and downs this season, there's a lot of work to do. There is really no point pissing your pants with fear over an iffy performance like this.

I just see very little in the way of quality in our side and our midfield is abysmal.  We can't keep the ball, look shaky at the back and we look very naive indeed.  We will see how it pans out and I hope to God I am wrong but I think we are one of the worst sides in this division.

EDIT; 3-1 now.  But we are not a poor side........... ::)

No idea....I'll give him the benefit of the doubt as he's been quite good do far, but that was abysmal, almost Huttonesque.

I thought he'd pulled up injured, he just stopped and stood there, watching it.

It's almost inevitable being a Villa fan that when another team needs a win really badly, we'll be most accomodating in helping out. Well this isn't going to plan and it just shows that this season will be very unpredictable. We're going to be very good at times and like today really poor. There was no way, after games against two very attacking sides to see us crumble like this. But it tells us what we already knew that there is a lot of work ahead. A lot.

The Swansea game is the only game I've not seen him play this season (away on hols), but I've yet to see him add anything to the team, especially today compared to Ireland and Bannan who were both subbed.

The new James Milner.... Do me a favour?!

As for Benteke, I think he's done ok. First 90 mins of Prem football, so he's gonna still be getting his fitness up, and he's had more positive attempts at goal than 'Benty' - And that pass to Bent was sublime!

That's the thing I am worried about. Not that a player looks 13, but that it's great taking a punt on young players from the lower leagues, but I wonder if we've risked a bit too much in doing that.

Westwood, Bennett and Lowton have a handful of top flight appearances between them. Lowton has done pretty well, but I think there is going to come a time this season when we'll be looking for someone with a bit of experience to come in and provide a bit of backbone, a bit of savvy.

Who is that going to be?

This thread is so fucking depressing. No wonder it's said that we don't give people a chance, I'm glad the media don't monitor forums - it's embarrassing.

Work in progress for god sake people - get a grip.

Completely agree mate.
Happy to say we've been shit but there's gonna be plenty of ups and downs this season.
Suddenly players who were class last week are useless?

Spot on fella

We're more than entitled as fans to say how shit we've been today.

Yes it's a work in progress but this performance is unacceptable on every level.

Do you think when Lambert points out how crap the defence was for all 3 goals he will accept his players saying "get a grip boss, we're a work in progress"?

Fucking dire today and EXACTLY like last season but with different players.

No of course he won't. He also won't make statements like we are CERTAIN to go down unless we make signings in January. I never at all said we can't say we've been shit today but to default to wrist slashing relegation talk is ridiculous and show's people don't seem to have any realistic idea about what the aims need to be for this season.

"People"?

It was one person who said we were "certain" to go down.

4-1, and you have to say that Southampton have deserved it - Villa have been fucking shit this half; no fight, no ideas, and a pretty humiliating scoreline.

I'm off to get pissed.

What's most surprising has been the lack of serious intent to keep possession today, totally the reverse of the Swansea game. I can only imagine that hopeful lofted balls in the general direction of Benteke are to blame.

Jesus christ. At least ive got lambert in my fantasy team, as well as bent and cole. Unluckily I've benched Clyne and have ciaran clark too

What a disintegration in the second half

Norwich got turned over a fair bit last year I recall. I reckon there'll be a fair few more of these

I don't care about being in transition, this is a shit result. We've been poor tactically, commitment wise and ability wise.

I think it's time to stop giving Robbie Savage any mentions. Villa are shit, but I couldn't give a fuck what that twat thinks about my team.

Totally outclassed today ..worrying considering Southamptons recent results.

Ramierz .Lallana and Lambert took us apart time and time again. The lack of width didn't help the FB went forward to support and they less acres of space which they exploited.Big bump to earth after last week. Also we were much worse once Ireland went off ,lost all ability to link the forwards with midfield.
