Title: Twenty20 World Cup 2012
Post by: cdbearsfan on September 19, 2012, 05:24:49 PM
Surprised there's no thread for this yet.

Afghanistan have started ok chasing India's 160 target. Can't see it lasting but hope they at least make a game of it.

I reckon Sri Lanka'll win it.

Makes sense to have this. Afghanistan look like a very decent side to me, some good bowlers and some good batting. I hope we are fully on the ball against them, our preparation has gone well but they look a real threat.

On an aside terrible attendance.

Why's he not allowed a runner? Ludicrous ruling. He could do permanent damage.

Yep ridiculous. I repeat though the Afghans look a good side, and we'll need to be at our best to win.

On an aside terrible attendance.
Their version of T20 was played in front of about 30 people, and that was the final.

I know it is not fashionable to talk England up, but I think we will be hard to beat at this tournament.  We have a line up of batsmen who can hit boundaries and a good bowling attack with a bit of variety.

Zimbabwe were desperately poor.

Agreed with Dominic Cork and Rob Croft in the studio when they said that Zimbabwe's automatic place in competitions needs to end.  They are not as good as some of the teams that are not making the tournaments.

Automatic places should only be given to the top 8 in the World rankings.

Australia are ranked 9.

Thus far this tournament has been pretty poor, some individual performances apart. The crowds have been terrible and the games have been massively one sided. The only game that got a bit interesting was India vs Afghanistan. Now I hope we hammer Afghanistan, but it would be nice to see some contests.

Well that's certainly on. We've been very very good and like the last Twenty20 I think a lot of bookies and cricket 'experts' have massively underestimated us. We have some very fine bowling options, are excellent in the field and we have lots of batsmen who can clear the ropes.

You beat what's put in front of you, a thoroughly professional drubbing of the minnows, something England have often failed to do having been beaten by the likes of Holland and Ireland in recent competitions.

Indeed and like I said there's a comparison here with how India got on against the Afghans. So England have been excellent in my opinion, very impressive and teams will be worried about us now if they weren't before.

It's not so much the spin, it's clearing the ropes and pace on the ball. Bresnan recovered that over well, but he doesn't really warrant a place in the side at the moment in my opinion.

I've seen him bat alright against spin(granted not in UAE), but it was more of a flippant comment. It just annoys me that we don't seem to be learning from our experiences against spin on the sub-continent, we consistently make the same mistakes and it's endemic throughout all formats of the game.

Can't understand the rules there.  If Sri Lanka were 174 -6 and New Zealand were 174 -7 after 20 overs,  then surely Sri Lanka win the game because they lost less wickets and there is no need for a quite absurd "super over"?

We would have been had Morgan come in before Bairstow. He killed our innings by barely scoring at a run every two balls, he flat out has no idea how to play spin and needs some serious coaching. Worryingly Broad said we bowled well, Finn and him did but the rest were awful. Well now it's essentially a knock out tournament, and if we keep getting appalling starts we're gone.

Paul sums it up very well but I would add we have to swop Briggs for the useless Patel and I would swop Bresnan for Dernbach

Bairstow is a clasic example of why we need to get our players into the IPL and the big bash - we have lots of people who do a good job on english style pitches but have so little experience outside that they are a liability.  For all his nonsense this is exactly why I wanted KP to win in the IPL battle, as a country we're a soft touch on the sub-continent and will only improve by playing there.

The major issue is we don't have the same advantage at home because most decent foreigners have played at least some time in county cricket in England, usually fairly recently before they tour here.

We schedule far too many games currently and need to start working out how to get the centrally contracted players some time with their county sides and in other tournaments.

It seems to me that we are the only team that is more a less completely incompetent against spin, Australia, NZ and South Africa can cope. They don't play in spinning conditions, why are we so poor? It can't just be the IPL.
Title: Re: Twenty20 World Cup 2012

Its because the pitches over here are not condusive to spin ie low and slow

Spin had nothing to do with the defeat against the Windies, we scored plenty against their spinners. It was a fluke defeat caused by losing two wickets in the first over - against pace. The mistake after that was not jiggling the batting order and leaving Morgan out until the next wicket went down.
Morgan needs to be at no lower than 4, preferably 3.

Right overall pretty poor throughout the tournament, we beat Afghanistan and NZ(who only beat Bangladesh). The reality is that a middle order of Bairstow and Buttler who can occasionally hit quick runs is not good enough. They may come good one day, but they shouldn't have been the current middle order. In fairness to Patel he batted excellently today, but his bowling was poor as was Dernbach's. We have a number of major issues to address including Broad as captain.

I forgot to add that I've never rated Wright but he did well overall in this tournament and deserves a chance moving forward. Also if Patel can play spinners like he did today, he's worth a shout as a number 7 batsman if he can improve his bowling. He was excellent with the bat today, but his bowling isn't up to it.
