Title: Matchday Experience
Post by: lukey27 on August 28, 2012, 10:07:38 AM
Performance aside. I thought the whole matchday experience in the Holte End on Saturday was quite disappointing. In the Holte Suite before the game, the teams weren't announced. In the Stadium, the second big screen was back but they showed the whole game on it, not the teams [useless if you didn't have a programme for the opposition]. The half time scores were unavailable, no Soccer Saturday, no clue what was going on at other grounds.

Thought the service at half time was pretty poor as well.

Do they consult people. Who actually needs the game shown on big screens inside the ground.  When the actual live game is right in front of you. Use it for replays, but the rest of the time, should have both teams and subs up on the screen.

Legion: Edited to incorporate all matches.

I was in the Lower Holte and thought everything was fine, Soccer Saturday on at half time and we even had the blokes running around with the Heineken back-packs, which I'd only seen on a few occasions before.

I do agree with you that it would have been better to have the team sheets on the big screens though.

The re-installed screen by the North Stand seemed to be at a strange angle.

I only saw the team announcement just before kick-off and agree that the graphics were very poor.

What was the earlier announcement like ? Did they have the old "turning or looking up" player videos, still photos or try something new ?

Bought the kids one of the 'new' cheeseburgers in the Upper Holte - no cheese and dried up crispy bread roll, not the best...

I don't get all this 'match day experience' malarkey. I'm not sure what some fans expect sometimes.

They normally put the team along the bottom of the screens in the Holte Suite before the game so i'm not sure what's changed there and the half times scores were on the advertising hoardings although i agree reading them out would have been better.

No tea in the Doug Ellis Upper. Still can't hear the tannoy. What happened to the planned rebuild of the North Stand?

I can't see the point of the match being played on the screens.  Teams are much more useful, especially after substituions and, in the case of Saturday, sendings off.

Didn't like:
1. Public address system. Couldn't hear ant thing in the centre of upper Witton End.
2. The fire thing as teams came out was tacky to the extreme.
3. The screen display...why have they changed it. Go back to teams and stats display please.

Liked:
My new ST seat in T3 row w right in the centre.

I prefer it when they have the match live on the screens. Comes in handy if someone's standing in the way. Put teams up and that lot during stoppages. I thought Black Sabbath should've been louder.

1. Public address system - always been an issue at VP due to acoutstic issues with stadium layout
2. Fire cannons - god damn awful sky induced shit (nothing to do with Villa) you want to be standing 6ft from them bastard things
3. Screen at an angle -purely for the Holte viewers as all other areas of ground can see the one in the Holte

fourth st for me.  Tannoy remains ear blisteringly loud or like the speaker is outside.  Nothing inbetween.  Why show the football match on wide screen while we are there?  Just team list and maybe replays are fine for me.  No hot water and no tills in Trinity upper making it seem like no-one had even checked beforer matchday since last season.  And the massive Zippos?... undecided.  Please bring back Hells bells.

I wouldnt have mentioned any of these things if we had won or had a great team display, which probably shows how high up the match day experience comes compared to the football on my list of priorities.

Why are both large screens so difficult to see from Trinity upper?

I sat in the Doug Ellis Upper for the Charity Shield and they had no beer at half time. The Cockerneys were not happy.

The massive delay getting out the car park afterwards would no doubt have put a cherrry on their day out at VP.

Thanks for the background reasons Hookey.

With regard to the PA system, you would think there are expert sound engineers out there who would be able to come in 'balance' the system.
I sit in the Doug Ellis Upper, in the centre and can barely hear a thing.

In the upper Trinity it was ear bleeding loud last season, moved to the Witton Lane upper and its muffled into silence [Bliss compared to last season!!!]

Couldnt see it from my old seat in the Upper Trinity either.

I would gues it was put that way as it was the cheapest and easiest way to mount it

It was. With the new link corridor between the North and the Witton Lane it would have cost a fortune to put it back there.

Well [I moved from upper Trinity]

It was ok, view was good, the atmosphere was great for about 3 mins then they scored and it went down hill from there!

My seat is the end seat on the row next to the away fans, so if some one is going to get hit with a missle its gonna be me!

Good value if we start to play a bit!

Similarly, during the pre-match thunder & lightning on Saturday, PeterWithesShin and I felt perfectly safe standing on Trinity Road. If lightning struck that area, there was only one person in its sights !!

To be fair to the Evertonion, that sounds like an awful experience and if true, we're ripping fans off. It shouldn't be allowed to happen.

Goodison is dreadful for away fans but by the sounds of things we're as bad. Oh dear.

I did that a couple of times at Anfield years ago.  My ex-girlfriend's dad were friendly with Steve Harkness's family (they were all truck drivers from Carlisle), and he used to sort us out for Liverpool v Villa tickets.  We were invited into the Liverpool players' lounge after they beat us 3-1, when Whittingham played out wide.

I gave up expecting decent food at football matches years ago and as for knowing the teams before the game... that was half the fun last year, walking in, turning to a mate and saying "Heskey and Hutton in midfield, what the feck is all that about"

We came up for our once-or-twice a year game (turned out to be a great match to choose!), lured partly by the Family Fun Day and corresponding cheap ticket deal in the Family Enclosure.

Not been in the Trinity Lower before - not much atmosphere (though ideal being with a seven and a three year old) but a good view and the seven-year-old was thrilled to see the players so close up as they came in and out the tunnel, despite the result.  Those fire jet things were ridiculous - we were in row 11 and flinched at the heat.

The Family Fun Day element in the Indoor Academy was OK I guess for a freebie, but the queues were so big the kids could only have a go at a couple of things in the hour or so we were there (not including to my regret getting a pic with Ian Taylor!).

All in all left with the usual mild annoyance at how footie fans are treated compared to other sports , particularly as regards food and drink.  The overcharging for the most simple (or downright nasty) fare, and the one that always boils my piss - the petty alcohol restrictions.

On the positive side, fair play to the club for keeping our admission prices accessible for the less well off, and that giant flag in the Holte looked ace. And as ever you can't beat the real thing over the TV version we're forced to endure most of the time living where we do. Will hopefully at least get to the likes of Soton and Reading this year tho, by which point I'm sure PL will have sorted the team ;0)

My mate was most upset as there was no draught beer in the Trinity. Apparently they hadn't had time to put it on. Wot, since May?
(Don't buy it myself as it's very shit and very expensive - now if they had Oakham Citra at £3.90 I'd consider it!).

What is the point of those giant screens showing the match pretty much all the time?

We can see the match, it is in front of us. Surely line ups, scorers and time would be more useful?
