Title: The Aston Villa Chronicles Volume 1 and 2
Post by: remy on July 30, 2012, 01:57:16 PM
Was going to buy this from the Villa shop earlier this year where Im sure it was £39.99 or half that price. Bought a retro top instead.

Its a limited edition box set written by John Lerwill. Its available from the Works in Solihull for £6 ! Wife picked it up for me - bless that girl !

Apparently reading it is like wading through treacle, but yeah, for £6 no complaining really. Might have a butchers down there myself in a bit.

Have any of you older Villans been in contact with this John Lerwill fellow before and know of his writings?

I think it's fair to say a few on here have spoken with him in the past....

Never met the man personally but when he spoke at the rededication of William McGregor's grave he was very good.
And I can recommend 'The Inspirational William McGregor' a collaboration between John Lerwill and Peter Lupson.

I hadnt read before about how much George Ramsey was so influential in Villa's history. 59 years is an incredible amount of time to be associated with the club ! I think we should rename the Witton Stand after him, oh wait that one is taken by another equally influential figure.

That wasn't him speaking, it was Peter Lupson.

I'm on Page 8 now. Review for H&V expected in 2016. Peter Lupson was amazing at the McGregor grave rededication.

Actually no. I adore reading about Villa history.

One fine lower holte day, a mate couldnt go so he gave me his ticket. I sat next to this senior lady in her 70's who had a been going to the Villa with her husband for more than 50 years. Her husband had sadly passed away a few years before but she was still going strong and wouldnt miss a Villa home match. She told me stories of all the great players to have graced the Villa Park turf - Eric Houghton, Pongo Waring, Billy Walker.

I am considering buying John Lerwills books,Villa Chronicles. By now those of you that bought them two years ago will have got through to the end.

I know the clubs history quite well. Question is should I buy or not?

I bought mine for a tenner from the club shop about two years ago. It's still in its shrinkwrap.

I think Chronicles tries to do too much, and when EVERYTHING is packed in, things lose their narrative.

I gave up fairly quickly, an admirable project but desperately lacking a good editor.

Anybody know if they keep a copy in the new Library? If so I may study that first.
