Villa Timbers v Villa. Nice. C'mon Aston in your Burgundy & Cobalt regulation season uniforms. Hit the pocket from the outfield and dry the spoon with the glove hole. Wow. Go Aston...

A great read, taken from the Portland Timbers website:-

http://www.portlandtimbers.com/news/2012/07/englishman-portland-aston-villa-fan-remembers

Joe's three elder brothers were all mates of mine, and we travelled to Rotterdam together for the Final in 1982.

Didn't manage to stay up for the first two games. As an early riser, this one might just be on so late that its in fact early enough for me to catch the end of the game. Off to bed for now!

Is the match only going to be on AVTV? Or have there been live links for the other 2 matches?

AVTV didn't show them live, it was just a commentary. Couldn't get a stream for the first game but watched the Chicago game via their own website link and it looks like Portand are doing something similar...

Villa: Guzan, Lowton, Collins, Clark, Warnock, Ireland, El Ahmadi, Bannan, Holman, Weimann, Delfouneso.

Subs: Marshall, Baker, N'Zogbia, Gardner, Carruthers, Johnson, Stevens, Lichaj

Down to the bare bones tonight. Six lads missing. I'm guessing that playing on plastic has been taken into consideration as part of the decision not to risk certain players.

Nice 19 minute applause for Stan again.

The players have been on a week long tour across the US in 3 time zones and training in temperatures approaching 40 celsius for the most part. We are also missing a number of key players. They have played 3 teams in the middle of their seasons, we are in our pre-season. Oh and by the way, they are playing on an artificial pitch which is more taxing than a grass pitch and something they are not used to. Not excuses. Genuine reasons why they might look a little flat.

The difference that Lambert and his coaching staff have made is enormous. We have a game plan, every player already knows their role in the team and we are playing with movement and do have the ability to retain the ball. We've even scored from a corner.

I like how Lambert has made us pretty solid, whilst using our wide players as extra midfielders. Holman and Ireland tucking in has helped massively and their movement is good, particularly when El Ahmadi and Bannan drop to receive the ball off the back 4. The full backs pushing on then helps us to retain the ball.

Given the fact that we're playing on a synthetic surface in another time zone against a team already in their season we should be very pleased with what we're seeing. I can't believe some are saying we've been 'cack'. This team has moved forward loads in a matter of weeks, give Lambert time and he'll have us where we should be.

Yep, we just lack that cutting edge and quality. Doesn't help not having Gabby or Bent, but we need a Sturridge type player that makes more inventive runs and offers something different in the final third. I like Weimann and Fonz but they look quite ordinary much of the time.

Hoped for a bit more from Weimann this game must admit. Still it's preseason, we're winning and we're not treating the ball like it's a bomb about to go off. So i'm pretty happy.

Agreed. All of the players have gone up in productivity in the space of few short weeks under Lambert. They are going to progress at different rates so we need to give them some time.

I've just realised I have to be up for 6:30. Ooops.

The game; a little more disjointed with the substitutions, Bannan stopped doing what he was doing well with Holman, Ireland and El Ahmadi on the pitch with him.

Delfouneso and Wiemann aren't good enough and hopefully Lambert will see the need to bring in a striker as back up to Gabby and Bent. Otherwise a good performance on the whole.

Well what a difference 3 weeks make with Lambert and his backroom staff. Promising stuff. Really encouraging for the future. Glad I watched that, especially with all the weird goings on. A guy with a buzzsaw, chopping up a log while the match is taking place?! Tom Hanks doing the toss at the start. The English and American national anthems. Villa playing in red and blue (according to the commentator) and a penalty shoot out as well as talk of an end zone?! It could only happen in the land of the free and the brave. Definitely time for bed and some trippy dreams.

Well not too bad. Some lovely passing at times but too often it lead to nothing. Still it's only a friendly and it's early days. Looks promising for the long term.

I do wonder about the crowd's patience for this new passing style. It will take done adjusting to and there will be games where we go nowhere as we adjust. I can imagine the "get it fucking forward!" complaints already

Having said that, if we start with the fonz and weimann up front we will struggle to score. And bent will need to get back into form which might be tricky in only a couple of friendlies.

A sturridge type player would be amazing but I'd be surprised

Patience for the passing style? Christ, we'll sit content just forgetting last season if we can see three passes strung together.

Hopefully the Villa faithful will get behind it. By the way if you saw some passes go astray tonight the timbers brought a fire hose (literally) to drench the pitch before the game and at half time. They swamped it to cut down our passing game. Which is a nice compliment in a way.

Was a fun game I have to say, Timbers have some good loud fans.

That wasn't our strongest side and I get the feeling that Lambert probably has 1-2 attacking players in mind to improve the squad and increase options. He seems to favour two up top and if that's the case we need one more front man. I don't think Fonz is good enough and I'm unconvinced on Weimann too.

I think our style of play will be a joy to watch compared to last season. Still it's early days. We may have to switch more direct at times against decent opposition.

I've seen nothing but positives in the four games so far (apart from the two injuries of course). Really enjoyed watching last night's game, not just the style of play but the desire to go and win the game after Portland equalised – not the sort of thing you expect in a friendly usually. It made for a very entertaining end-to-end last 15 minutes or so.

We've won our last couple haven't we? The Peace cup win, Sunderland in the carling cup the year we reached the final and Bolton in the FA cup semi, can't think of many else.

We do tend to win penalty shootouts, lost to Wedt Ham in the League Cup, but ended up going through as they fielded an ineligible player

Off the top of my head Wimbledon in the FA Cup is the only one I can remember us losing. Unless you count Forest in that Mercantile or Centenary thing at Wembley.
