Villa Timbers v Villa. Nice. C'mon Aston in your Burgundy & Cobalt regulation season uniforms. Hit the pocket from the outfield and dry the spoon with the glove hole. Wow. Go Aston...
-
A great read, taken from the Portland Timbers website:-
http://www.portlandtimbers.com/news/2012/07/englishman-portland-aston-villa-fan-remembers
Joe's three elder brothers were all mates of mine, and we travelled to Rotterdam together for the Final in 1982.
-
Didn't manage to stay up for the first two games. As an early riser, this one might just be on so late that its in fact early enough for me to catch the end of the game. Off to bed for now!
-
Is the match only going to be on AVTV? Or have there been live links for the other 2 matches?
-
There were links for the Chicago game and possible links for the Timbers game tonight here:

AVTV didn't show them live, it was just a commentary. Couldn't get a stream for the first game but watched the Chicago game via their own website link and it looks like Portand are doing something similar...

Thanks for the link!! :-) Now to try to stay up until half 3 think I'm gonna need a large pot of coffee.
-
According to Twitter, a certain Mr Tom Hanks is at the game.
-
Tom Hanks is there apparently: click (https://twitter.com/AVFCOfficial)
-
And Geezer Butler is there too.
-
Just a shame that Gabriel Al-Agronlaboor is missing tonight.
Go cobalts.
-
Villa: Guzan, Lowton, Collins, Clark, Warnock, Ireland, El Ahmadi, Bannan, Holman, Weimann, Delfouneso.
Subs: Marshall, Baker, N'Zogbia, Gardner, Carruthers, Johnson, Stevens, Lichaj
Down to the bare bones tonight. Six lads missing. I'm guessing that playing on plastic has been taken into consideration as part of the decision not to risk certain players.
-
Anyone else sad enough to still be up with the intention of (hopefully) watching the game?
-
Go Gabby!!
And I love that Guzan starts
And I think that Weimann is going to be our next 20 goals a season man. Andy for 3 tonight
-
Anyone else sad enough to still be up with the intention of (hopefully) watching the game?
Yep. I'm not quite sure why.
-
no! just you ;)
-
Two of us waiting, there's only two of waiting!
Must admit I don't know whether i'm hoping the stream works or not.
-
I have a stream working. The adverts nearly exploded my laptop though.

going for the official Portlands website

-
This is working great. Come on you Lions!!

-
Oh Dear! National Anthems too
-
I would do her star sp...
-
Hanksy loves the Villa.
-
Tom Hanks finally seing Villa play. Will he see them win??
-
Taxy...seems we are here alone!
-
Is that really Geezer Butler?
-
Banana captain!!! Good signs I hope!!
-
The axeman cometh
-
Anyone else sad enough to still be up with the intention of (hopefully) watching the game?
Me too...but then I'm almost always up at this time ;)
-
Amazing build up on the TV! :)
GOOOO BANANA!! and Villa
5-1
-
Banana captain!!! Good signs I hope!!
I'm not sure 'Banana Captain' should have made me laugh quite as much as it did. Mind you it is 3.36am.
-
I don't know about Hanks seeing us play, it looked like he was gonna be playing for a second there. But he was bizarrely just tossing the coin? Only in America...
-
Is that really Geezer Butler?
Yep that's him
-
Empty seats ma'lord..
-
Al-Ahmadi (not ACCCHMAAADI as that stupid Villa commentary dude always call him) did a sloppy pass.
-
Amazing background knowledge by the US comm team
-
Amazing link up play untill Collins.. :(
-
What a shock from Collins.
-
Love this passing play. We are no longer official relegation fodder ...
-
"skipped outside of his left forehead".. :)
-
I love this mentalty. Lets hope it will be there in the prem.
-
Ireland scores but offside.
-
Unlucky Ireland! Would like to see that again to see if it was actually offside. Couldn't tell from that angle.
-
Not so much the offside. But the build up!! amazing
-
We certainly like to keep the ball and not give it away. I like where we are going with this but we still need that bit of pace and quality.
-
Yet again ! Amazing support for Stan!!
-
Nice standing ovation from the whole ground for Stan
-
Nice response to the 19th minute.
-
Fuck me!! they just showed the image of Stan the Man - and nothing on the field!! #RESPECT!
-
I love the way the commentator breaks into an advert as if he's just talking normally.
Good support for Stan from the crowd
-
We've been a bit cack so far. Bannan and Collins resorting to Hollywood 60 yard passes.
Nice 19 minute applause for Stan again.
-
Bit of desperate defending then.
-
Fuck me. A moment of 2011-2012 Villa then as we looked all at sea.
-
The game is live on the Timbers website gents.
-
Was that our first official shot?
-
Cack?????
Are you sure????
From McLeish's mentalty . and we are CACK???
-
Was that our first official shot?
We certainly don't shoot nearly enough. It's been an issue for a couple of seasons now.
-
Sorry you dudes! : this game is not about statistics. We are changing our mentalty and gameplan - which looks SOOO much more amazing
-
We've been a bit cack so far. Bannan and Collins resorting to Hollywood 60 yard passes.
Nice 19 minute applause for Stan again.
The players have been on a week long tour across the US in 3 time zones and training in temperatures approaching 40 celsius for the most part. We are also missing a number of key players. They have played 3 teams in the middle of their seasons, we are in our pre-season. Oh and by the way, they are playing on an artificial pitch which is more taxing than a grass pitch and something they are not used to. Not excuses. Genuine reasons why they might look a little flat.
-
Unlikely to score many unless we shoot more than once every half an hour ;)
-
Complaining after TSM - No way!!! (and alm0st scored our first corner since nov 2010)
-
Collins should have scored there from a corner. Our first since late 2010!
-
This is a team playing football....:The no 1 reason why TSM fucked it up ( he didnøt want to)
-
THATS WHAT I WANT FROM ALHAMADI....
-
I love the intricate passes and the desire to keep the ball. But we need to get some shots in.
FOOOOOOKING SHOOT as OGS might say
-
Screaming shot from Bannan. Great save from the keeper
-
And we finally get a good dig in.
-
WE SCORED FROM A CORNER!!!!!!! Ciaran Clark
-
And from the shot we get a corner and we score. Wonders never cease.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL
-
Get in!!! A goal from a corner!?? Who'd have thunk it
-
WE SCORED FROM A CORNER! (came to kill the Website tab...)
-
We really have played some lovely stuff at times. You just feel we have an extra gear or two if needed.
-
Cack may have been harsh. But I'm comparing us to the last couple of games, not TSM's complete abortion of a season.
Much better since I posted that though.
Scored from a corner. Fuck me.
-
I love Ciearan!!!
-
Well not too bad. Some lovely passing at times but too often it lead to nothing. Still it's only a friendly and it's early days. Looks promising for the long term.
-
its about how we GO play. :) love it
-
What a pleasure to see us playing possession football. Also, looking comfortable doing it and at pace, terrific.
-
The difference that Lambert and his coaching staff have made is enormous. We have a game plan, every player already knows their role in the team and we are playing with movement and do have the ability to retain the ball. We've even scored from a corner.
I like how Lambert has made us pretty solid, whilst using our wide players as extra midfielders. Holman and Ireland tucking in has helped massively and their movement is good, particularly when El Ahmadi and Bannan drop to receive the ball off the back 4. The full backs pushing on then helps us to retain the ball.
Given the fact that we're playing on a synthetic surface in another time zone against a team already in their season we should be very pleased with what we're seeing. I can't believe some are saying we've been 'cack'. This team has moved forward loads in a matter of weeks, give Lambert time and he'll have us where we should be.
-
American bimbo's bouncing. And now kids in what look like Celtic shirts bouncing. And now someone in a very stupid hat bouncing.
-
Well not too bad. Some lovely passing at times but too often it lead to nothing. Still it's only a friendly and it's early days. Looks promising for the long term.
Yep, we just lack that cutting edge and quality. Doesn't help not having Gabby or Bent, but we need a Sturridge type player that makes more inventive runs and offers something different in the final third. I like Weimann and Fonz but they look quite ordinary much of the time.
-
Great parenting, just pick your kids up and wave them around for the cameras.
-

Hoped for a bit more from Weimann this game must admit. Still it's preseason, we're winning and we're not treating the ball like it's a bomb about to go off. So i'm pretty happy.

Agreed. All of the players have gone up in productivity in the space of few short weeks under Lambert. They are going to progress at different rates so we need to give them some time.
-
For anyone interested.

N'Zog, Stevens and Lichaj on. Warnock, Weimann and Collins off
-
Another offside goal. Some nice stuff in the build up though.
-
Balls. Fonz goal won't count. Ireland offside again after a lovely move.
-
Is it just me and you on here Peter?
-
I believe so. The rest are a bunch of lightweights! It's only just gone 5am the big girls.
-
Missed the first half but I'm watching now. Some promising foundations but we need more quality in the final third. No shocks there though.
Ireland looks sharp.
-
We've been very good in this half.
-
It's almost midnight here. When I lived in England people were harder than they are now. I'm glad that there is at least one person left with the fortitude to see this through.
Good chance for N'Zog there. I really want to see him do well. Have my doubts though.
-
Last four outfield subs coming on. Baker, Johnson, GG and Carruthers.
-
Lambert seemed to congratulate Ireland as he came off.
-
Good to see Lambert putting his arm around Ireland there MON style. ;)
-
Bazza Bannan has been very tidy tonight. Nothing special but he has really kept us ticking over nicely.
-
Balls 1-1
Conceded from a corner again. McLeish OUT
-
Good to see we can still be sloppy facing corners. It's been coming I have to say.
-
Awful marking. Twice.
-
Numerous players a bit slow to react at the corner there.
-
We are looking tired now
-
How did Zog miss that?
-
Yessssss!!!!!!! Lowton
-
Another goal from a corner. Anyone else hearing Twilight Zone music?
-
Fuck me 2-2
-
Haha 2-2 ffs
-
Freak deflection but Guzan didn't cover himself with glory.
-
Goes to penalties if it stays this way.
-
If it's a draw I think we have penalties.
-
Tried to walk it in there. Shoot the fucking ball.
-
Hmmmm apparently "it's traditional for it to go to penalties if it's a draw"
-
been ere all the time peter lambo
as finish work at 3 just enjoy readin comments sometimes but fall apart abit after the subs came on i think still room for work to be done.....if it was a school report read satfactory
-
Hmmmm apparently "it's traditional for it to go to penalties if it's a draw"
The commentator really has no clue
-
Lichaj has put a decent shift in

What?
-
Freak deflection but Guzan didn't cover himself with glory.
He can make up for it in the penalty shoot out.
-
Good effort from N'Zog. Saved by the keeper.
-

The commentator really has no clue
You can say that again he's now talking about our "red and blue shirts"??
-
Jeeze i'm getting tired. And still got to wait for penalties.
-
Jeeze i'm getting tired. And still got to wait for penalties.
I really need to go to bed. Pennos ffs
-
And the clock ticks to 5.30am. Just call it a draw!
-
I've just realised I have to be up for 6:30. Ooops.
The game; a little more disjointed with the substitutions, Bannan stopped doing what he was doing well with Holman, Ireland and El Ahmadi on the pitch with him.
Delfouneso and Wiemann aren't good enough and hopefully Lambert will see the need to bring in a striker as back up to Gabby and Bent. Otherwise a good performance on the whole.
-
1-0 Timbers
-
1-1 Bannan
-
2-1 Timbers
-
2-2 Lichaj
-
2-2, good penalties from all so far.
-
3-2 Timbers
-
3-3 GG
-
4-3 Timbers
-
Every penno has been rock. Oh, here comes N'Zog
4-4
-
Come on Guzan
-
Guzan saves!
-
Come on Brad!!!
Saved!!!!
-
I forgive him for the goal now
-
Carruthers to win it
YESSSS
-
Get in. Villa win!
-
Cool penalties from our lads.
What do we win? A log?
-
Goodnight everyone!!!
-
Bright Dike?!
-
Well done lads, good fun at this ungodly hour.
-
Villa win, 13 goals. Just like last season. :)
-
5.40am. Time for bed. G'night lads.
-
Be honest!
Did anyone think that we would win a PK Shootout?
Not me, I must admit; every pen, was a perfect one, excellent.
-
I thought N'Zogbia was going to fluff his to be honest but credit to them, they all put them away cooly.
-
Well what a difference 3 weeks make with Lambert and his backroom staff. Promising stuff. Really encouraging for the future. Glad I watched that, especially with all the weird goings on. A guy with a buzzsaw, chopping up a log while the match is taking place?! Tom Hanks doing the toss at the start. The English and American national anthems. Villa playing in red and blue (according to the commentator) and a penalty shoot out as well as talk of an end zone?! It could only happen in the land of the free and the brave. Definitely time for bed and some trippy dreams.
-
Well not too bad. Some lovely passing at times but too often it lead to nothing. Still it's only a friendly and it's early days. Looks promising for the long term.
I do wonder about the crowd's patience for this new passing style. It will take done adjusting to and there will be games where we go nowhere as we adjust. I can imagine the "get it fucking forward!" complaints already
-
Having said that, if we start with the fonz and weimann up front we will struggle to score. And bent will need to get back into form which might be tricky in only a couple of friendlies.
A sturridge type player would be amazing but I'd be surprised
-
Patience for the passing style? Christ, we'll sit content just forgetting last season if we can see three passes strung together.
-

Hopefully the Villa faithful will get behind it. By the way if you saw some passes go astray tonight the timbers brought a fire hose (literally) to drench the pitch before the game and at half time. They swamped it to cut down our passing game. Which is a nice compliment in a way.
Was a fun game I have to say, Timbers have some good loud fans.
-
That wasn't our strongest side and I get the feeling that Lambert probably has 1-2 attacking players in mind to improve the squad and increase options. He seems to favour two up top and if that's the case we need one more front man. I don't think Fonz is good enough and I'm unconvinced on Weimann too.
I think our style of play will be a joy to watch compared to last season. Still it's early days. We may have to switch more direct at times against decent opposition.
-
I'm glad we have had a good pre season in the states looking forward to the season starting now.
-
I've seen nothing but positives in the four games so far (apart from the two injuries of course). Really enjoyed watching last night's game, not just the style of play but the desire to go and win the game after Portland equalised – not the sort of thing you expect in a friendly usually. It made for a very entertaining end-to-end last 15 minutes or so.
-

if it is anything like our patience for transfers errrr? :-\
-
I think thanks needs to go to our commentary team of Edvard and PWS, for bothering to stay up at that time.
-
Be honest!
Did anyone think that we would win a PK Shootout?
Not me, I must admit; every pen, was a perfect one, excellent.
We've won our last couple haven't we? The Peace cup win, Sunderland in the carling cup the year we reached the final and Bolton in the FA cup semi, can't think of many else.
-
We do tend to win penalty shootouts, lost to Wedt Ham in the League Cup, but ended up going through as they fielded an ineligible player
-
Off the top of my head Wimbledon in the FA Cup is the only one I can remember us losing. Unless you count Forest in that Mercantile or Centenary thing at Wembley.

Watched a bit of that this morning. Bannan's passing was incredibly good.
