A few photos.
You can imagine the aroma of Ansells and HP Sauce in the air.

Imagine? As a local lad of a certain age I can still TASTE it!!

Lovely to see some old photos of Aston as it was though. My late Father came out of Gr eat Lister St and went to Upper Thomas Street School and dear old Mum was born and raised in Cuckoo Rd Nechells, where my Grandfather still lived until he was compulsory rehoused in the mid 60's. My old stamping ground as a young 'un and you could roam the area in comparative safety....Happy days!

The Shareholders Arms. I remember going past that on the bus as a kid, it was just before the Barton Arms.It looked like a really horrible Glaswegian 70's pub .I am sure the original from that list was a beautiful building knocked down with the best intentions.

As a kid I would pass the Grosvenor Arms on the way back to the bus stop on Lichfield Rd after the game. There always seemed to be great atmosphere coming from the pub after our Wednesday night games, I even envied the adults who went there as the seemed to be having a such a good time.  By the time I was 18 the pub had gone.

I used to drink in there before night matches. They opened about half an hour earlier than the 5.30 standard hours allowed.
It was a very narrow public bar in there and you would have had difficulty playing a game of dominoes on the tables, which were only about 18 inches wide.
The gaffer was dragged out by the Police one night, supposedly on a tax evasion charge, shouting 'don't worry lads, I'll be back'.
He ended up at the Crown and Anchor on Watery Lane when the Grosvenor shut its doors for the last time. The tree that was in the back yard of the pub is still there.
