“I knew then that if McLeish was to leave then Lambert would be the ideal man for the job and I am glad Randy Lerner and Paul Faulkner agreed with me.”

Give it a rest Herbert, you've had your many, many days in the sun.
-
They'll always ask Doug what he thinks while he's around.
-
I wondered if he voted in the H&V poll...?
-
Nice to know Brian Little & John Gregory were sacked and Ron Saunders left while Doug was around.
-

To be honest, I don't blame them.
-
This is nothing he will be picking ou managers from the grave.
-
Doug calling for managerial stability?
-
Nice to know Brian Little & John Gregory were sacked and Ron Saunders left while Doug was around.
I noticed that one! "I had 13 managers, and sacked 11 of them! Ron Saunders resigned and Graham Taylor I allowed to go to England!'

Didn't he always claim he didn't sack Brian or JG?
-
This also made me raise an eyebrow. "The most successful managers I picked tended to be the ones who stayed longest – that was because they had time to settle in to the job and the better they do the less need there is to remove them from office"
My memory is that apart from Ron Saunders and SGT all the others got worse the longer they were there. Usually by the second or third full season.

Only when it suited him.
-
He'll be claiming praise for '81, '82 & '83 next
-
Shouldn't the title read "Sir Doug would have picked Lambert too"?
-
He should say something about Martinez and incite a full on battle royale between himself and Whelan. A war like that could see whole continents (not to mention incontinence pants) torn asunder.
-

He has done for a long while.
-
He's always great value for money, you can't deny that. Is there nothing this man can't do/predict/accomplish?

At least we used to have the AGM to look forward to each year. There were people stropping out of the room like big tarts and Doug would always find something new to entertain us with.
-

I knew you'd pick up on that!
Poor ol' Doug. Bless him...
-
I suppose he`ll claim it was his idea when it comes to sacking said manager
-
I am feeling extremely tetchy and groggy after my op on Friday so my response to the latest utterances from Ellis are terse....
"Shut the fu** up Ellis or better still just fu** off- you slimy, horrible man"
As you may of guessed I am not his greatest fan - I know too many personal things about him that have shaped my views of him over the years.
-

He has done for a long while.
They were his babbies, you know...

Quite clearly, he fathered all of them!
You can't keep a good old ba**ard down!

I'd put my money on Doug for that one. He's been spinning the wheel long before Sky was around and always got the last dig in. The man is a master of presenting his side of the story as the absolute truth. Whelan, the greasy fucking armpit won't know what's hit him.
-
Apparently the other two on Herbert's list were Billy McNeil and Graham Turner.

But he's cuddly old Uncle Doug now, you're not allowed to hate him any more didn't you know?
-
Tony Barton.
Trinity Road Stand.
-
One things for sure, even he would never have picked that last one................
-
legend. What else did people expect him to say?
-
Doug amuses and disgusted me in equal measure. The horrible, self publicising, old ******.
But, well, bless him...
-
One things for sure, even he would never have picked that last one................
Indeed. He picked Turner and McNeill who were shit enough to relegate us.

chuckle... good old revisionism. File with he'd never have had our kits made by some no name company like Macron. Henson *cough...cough*
-
With anyone else, such delusional utterings from an octogenarian would be dismissed as an old man going insane, but Herbert's been coming out with stuff like this for more than 40 years!!
-
So, Sir Doug picked Lambert? Was that just after telling us that Mcshit was a very good Manager? He's a complete egotistical knob and I have no respect for him whatsoever. His opinions mean shit.
-
I wonder what he would have said if we had hired Mick McCarthy.
-
I wonder what he would have said if we had hired Mick McCarthy.
That he knew him when he was in the Beatles.
-
SGT quit the second time around not Doug sacking him. And from the horses mouth himself, SGT said he knew his time was up when the board refused to cut their loses and get rid of Alpay
-
Ron Saunders? My memory might be playing tricks but if I remember correctly the Bendalls were in charge at that point. Doug didn't take over until after the European Cup win, and Ron Saunders had left by then
-
Correct. Ron left in February, Doug came back in November.
-

Yes, indeed - he came back in November 82 and we were relegated by May 87! Well done Sir....taking over the European Champions and then the 5 year master plan really worked!
-

A though occured to me last night, Doug WASN'T at the Villa when Saunders resigned, it was the Bendalls!!
Ron walked away in 1982!!
I mentioned in an earlier post he'd try and claim '81, '82 & '83
EDIT: posted without reading to page 3 on thread
-
Really? I can't believe no-one thought to mention it.
EDIT: posted before your edit.
-
He knew Lambert was the man because of the quality of running off the ball Norwich displayed in the last game of the season. "In my many years of both playing and watching football I have learnt the importance of work and running off the ball". Priceless.
-
He's our very own Dave Whelan !
-
Brian Little Resigned, JG resigned, I do think DOL was sacked though.
Doug please give it a rest on the football, i have no problems with you talking about your charity work and your donations but leave the football comments alone.
-
Did he not say (back in the mid/late 90's) that he would never sack another manager ??
-
You lot should lay off the old duffer, after all, if it wasn't for him we wouldn't have the bicycle kick, package holidays, the rotary clothes drier, motorways, the internet and all sorts of other stuff that the average loonie claims to have invented. And I'm sure that he would have been a better manager than any of those he sacked.
Oh and don't forget that glorious piece of modern architecture called the Trinity Road Stand.
He must be a great man, after all without any prompting from him the board named a stand after him.
-
“You could instantly discard 75 per cent of them. I would call a board meeting to discuss the prime candidates and we would whittle it down to a 1-2-3 who I would interview.
“I would then report back to the other members of the board with my recommendations and finally choose...
Josef Venglos."
-
Paul Lambert - the latest in a long list who will be bequeathed 'Son' status by Sir Egotist.

Sir Doug Picked MON when he sacked Odreary

Sir Doug Picked MON when he sacked Odreary
Under certain conditions we are led to believe. I'd like to know the full story though.
-
Doug then turned up at Hanover with O'Neill, Robertson and Walford.
-
Sir Doug as Club President thinks he is a bit like The Queen. She has to give royal assent before any act of parliament becomes law. In the same way before any major club appointment is properly in place, he has to give an interview to the local media to say he approves.
He is probably planning for his diamond jubilee celebrations in 2028. Street parties in Witton, Majorca, and the Four Oaks park estate.
