Wonderful article , hard to believe its 30 years ago and i remember well being in the crowds trying to take pictures outside the council house, some were in trees and on rooftops but great great memories.
Tony barton was a true gent and treated badly when sacked but he will never be forgotten.

So Blues are cursed by gypsies whilst we're blessed by them. 8)

Any time anyone harps on that Ellis wouldn't have hired an ex small heath manager, or Ellis would have done this that or the other, should remember how he treated the manager of our greatest moment.
Barton will never be forgotten, Ellis will never be forgiven.

I just read the article on Rose Barton and it is a great read, thanks for posting and thanks to Tony Barton for what he did for our club.

There’s a plaque at Villa Park in the museum suite commemorating Tony’s cup win.
Is that the same one that was retireved from a skip when the old Trinity was pulled down? I remember that, quite rightly, there was outrage on here about it at the time.

That's the one. You don't know the half of it.

What a really nice piece (I'm loving the lucky lace - the next time anyone says anything bad about Gypsies...)

come on then Dave spill the beans

It's been said on here many time, but basically the club refused to do anything to help Tony before he died, then when the memorial match was finally arranged they did the absolute minimum to help.

“It was a fantastic achievement but it amazes me that people are still talking about 30 years on. I doubt they will be in another 30.”
Well, I shall be 88 years of age in 30 years time. If I am still compos mentis, I will still be talking about it.
Thank you Mrs Barton for the interview and the memories. Thank you Tony!

Mrs B, in thirty years time your husband's achievements (which, incidentally, began a lot earlier than 1982) and his downright decency will still be a part of Villa legend. Doug Ellis will then be a half-forgotten name.
-
Doug Ellis had every right to replace the manager in 1984 if he genuinely thought it was in the best interests of the club but the petty spite that was involved and continued long afterwards was unforgivable. It would appear Tony Barton's major crimes were winning the European Cup and Super Cup along with, whilst being a nice guy, not being the pushover and yes man Doug expected.

Magic isn't it?

It's issues such as this that make the revisionist view of Ellis, expressed on here sometimes, so hollow.

I was with Gary Shaw on Sunday and mentioned the interview , which he hadn't seen. I told him that Mrs.Barton was pictured holding the piece of lace and his face lit up. He couldn't quite believe that it was still around.
He then started speaking about Tony Barton and I could feel the respect that he still has for the man all these years later.

Was he drinking in Harborne LPM?
