I know we have done this kind of thing before but I thought I'd start a new one. After-all, we have just completed a twentieth year in the Premiership (though I doubt many of the present XI will make the cut!).
I'll start off. I'd name a 3-5-2 formation to utilise the quality centre backs we have had. I know we have had good full backs (Delaney, Young, Staunton, Wright), but I think we have been blessed with some exceptional central defenders.
---------------------Bosnich-----------------------
-----Southgate---McGrath----Laursen (c)-----
-----Merson------Townsend----Barry------------
Milner---------------------------------------Young (A)--
----------------Yorke-----------------------------
------------------------------Dublin------
Subs: Friedal, Mellberg, Young (L), Petrov, Daley, Gabby, Carew.
I think that's a pretty solid line-up. Townsend was lucky to shade it over Taylor and Richardson. I think Milner and Young would have to start on the flanks with Merson offering creativity through the centre and Barry offering poise.
Yorke would come deep to get the ball if need be and would drift around the attacking third creating space for others to come in and cause mayhem. Dublin would lead the line because he would be a good foil for Yorke. Bent needs another good season to start challenging for inclusion. I wanted Tony Daley and Gabby on the bench to offer differnt options. Daley's trickery and Gabby's blistering pace served us well.
