Title: Villa income from Premier League down by £7m
Post by: Risso on May 15, 2012, 01:13:18 PM
Good piece here on the Sporting Intelligence website:

Our total income was down £7m on last year, partly because merit money per place was £755,000, so dropping 7 places has cost us about £5m of that.  We also only appeared live 10 times, which is the minimum number of times per the PL contract, 26 being the maximum.  This was down on 15 live appearances last year, and 16 the year before.  Perhaps unsurprisingly, ours was the biggest fall in income in the year.
Just further reinforces what an incredibly foolish and costly mistake it was to appoint the Scottish Manager.  It's disappointing, because we've cut the wage bill and completed apparently decent new commercial deals, then we lose money this way, and also in paying off Alex MacBeth.

I'm not surprised we only appeared live the minimum amount of times. How to get a nation to turn over to another channel en masse. The football we served up was bloody awful to watch for us let alone the neutrals.

BBC Match of the Day would probably about £3.50 a game as we were always on last for 20 seconds.

It's a blow, but only a short term one as we can (hopefully!) expect to climb the table again next season.

An expensive blow

It's obviously not going to help in the quest to rebuild the team.

The statement yesterday spelt it out that we are going to be looking for a manager that plays better football. It is not shocking that we were on a minimum amount of times. Hopefully by Christmas we might be picked up by a few more.

The real cost of hiring the Scottish manager.

Yes, you get what you pay for. Or lose in this case. Its just something Randy is going to have to take on the chin.
We're not going to be an exciting team again without funding so there it is in black and white. Investment is coming. It has to be.

I hadn't appreciated just how big an impact on TV money playing the most boring football I've ever seen has.

What a spectacular cock up his appointment was.

It's a good job the bulk of the TV money is paid equally and that there is a minimum number of games that are shown live for each club.

It is interesting that half of the clubs were shown the minimum number of times and a couple of teams close to the minimum.  It just shows that money gravitates towards they same clubs each season.

RL can just lend us some more of his trust money on the never never.

When you factor in the lost revenue of the lower attendances it becomes even more costly.

I will argue that we have potentially exciting team - utilise NZogbia, Bent, Ireland correctly and rebuild Albrighton and Bannan's confidence.

What additional 'investment' do you refer? Our collective debt is 100m (in theory). The only way I can see short term investment is stadium naming rights. You fancy that.

We need someone who can eek the best out resources current and future, especially the youngsters. And get rid of the deadwood from O'Neill's era and pick up bargains who will play for a lot less than 40k a wekk

Indeed and exacerbated further by the Champions League money.

I was surprised the game v Albion wasn't shown but the TV companies probably gave up after the Stoke games.

The real cost of the last couple of years is almost incalculable, not just in financial terms.

I think the last 3 years (although we had 1 year of comparative success). O'Neill was given a lot of money in his 'last summer' and didn't get 4th. We have sat on a wage  timebomb since - which he ran away from.

You are right - the cost is incalcuable. Maybe 50m + credibility + goodwill + the great name tarnished by botched appointments.
