Title: Villa/rangers footage 1970's (not football)
Post by: Saunders9 on May 05, 2012, 11:56:39 AM
If anyone has been watching The 70's on bbc then I believe that in episode 3 shown Mon 30/4 they show a few seconds of fighting from the Rangers friendly in the mid 70s. They showed a news report with the old Trinity in the background. The footage is very minimal but the show also has some good footage of Austin (rover) as well.

Yeah I noticed it was Villa Park and assumed they must be on about the Rangers game. Decent programme but could have done with more punk and less jubilee.

Yes I saw that and have been enjoying the series. Dominic Sandbrook is a good presenter but I didnt feel he had really got hold of what it was like watching football then. The impression came across that games up and down the country were battlegrounds week in week out and the hooligan element was numerically taking over.
I used to go home and away right through the 1970s, if you kept your wits about you and were sensible you would still be unlucky to get mixed up in trouble. Hooliganism was a massive problem but it was still the case that the great majority of games passed off without riots, pitch invasions etc.
I think he fell down on this for two reasons. 1) He wasnt there, being born in the 70s.  2) He is a Wolves fan.

It was I'm sure. They had that piece to camera by Alan Towers with villa park as the backdrop. I am sure I remember that from the time.

Good summary olf the situation. I too am a relic of '70's home and away supporting and got close to some pretty scary moments but managed to preserve my good looks throughout.

I was at the game with a couple of school mate.
We went strolling into the Holte to be met by a wall of police and thousands of Rangers fans. Absolutly s**t ourselves, then once down the Witton end it was "Come and 'ave a go if you think you're 'ard enough"
Then they invaded the pitch and we s**t ourselves again  ;D
God we were hard back then  :-[

What a brilliant clip. That lady should be put forward for Lady Mayoress. I hope that she is still around and doesn't get half the grief that she did then. She also manages to get in a dig about Mr. Ellis.

As a piece of social history, that clip is absolutely fantastic stuff. Brilliant.

I know on a serious note it's not funny, but the bit where she said the Rangers fans were urinating through letter boxes made me laugh. Excellent clip though.

That'll be for Barcelona in the European Super Cup.

I think it was the game in the the late 70s, not the Super Cup.
