Spurs are a there for the taking. Bale is a busted flush, Modric is waiting for a transfer to a big club, van der Vaart is always injured and Lennon will put every cross into Witton Station.

We really ought to play Warnock on central midfield and go 4-3-3, but it will be a lean 4-4-2 again.

Big day for those playing their last home game for us.

Villa 2 (Heskey, Cuellar) Spurs 0.

McLeish to be unable to get past Grant in the dugout to partake in lap of honour.

0-1.  I just don't see where Villa's goals are coming from.  What is it? 1 goal in about three and a half games or so.

They're not very good, but will have no problems seeing us off. I've gone for a defeat, expecting 2-0.  I'd like to be more positive, but unless the last home game of the season ( for some last ever home game) motivates some of our senior players to perform then we can only expect the inevitable.

Spurs win, I think they've got a better team than us and will close the season strongly.

However, I do believe we'll see a far better Villa performance too, and we will also finish the season well (if not in terms of actual points, then certainly attacking play).

Team I'd go with....

Given

Cuellar          Collins  Dunney Lichaj

                   Clark (man mark VDV)
N'Zogbia      Herd         Ireland       Warnock

                          Gabby

Hutton will be the usual liability in this game. We know Carlos won't let us down at RB and I remember Lichaj had a good game against Bale in this fixture last season so that needs to be the back 4 to cope with their pace.

Van Der Vaart has been the difference in this fixture previously so his runs need to be covered so I'd look at Clark or Herd doing a proper man to man job on him.

I actually fancy Gabby to play well in this game. He always used to give Gallas the run around but that was four years ago now.

I think it's vital we don't lose this as a point will mean QPR will need to beat Man. City in their last game.

Not a million miles from what I was thinking the team could be.
I just wonder if he'll rest Gabby and play Weimann. That's the surprise selection I had in mind.
I think Gabby's been lacking recently and I'm not sure he's 100% fit from his shoulder injury.
I just wonder though. Will AMcL be brave enough?
I will add, though, if it's pace your worried about, do we really want Collins and Dunne as centre backs?

To an extent. If QPR beat Stoke 10-0 then it'll become an issue.

Otherwise we'll go into the last weekend on 38 points. So if we lose to Norwich then a point for QPR means they just have to sort out a -9 goal difference. So they basically would have to beat Man City as per Chris' post.

5-5. We'll be 5-1 down and someone in the crowd will shout out "battle for your pride". The players do and we are only denied a 6-5 win by a goal line clearance late on.

Weimann barely got a sniff against Bolton last time out. Heskey is more likely to start the last two games than him I'd say.

I'm thinking worst case this weekend, I think QPR will beat Stoke and Bolton will beat WBA.

Dave, I wasn't really disagreeing with SHQ, merely pointing out that he hadn't mentioned QPR's game against Stoke, the result of which is important to us. If we match it against Spuds, we're as good as safe with our 'less bad' GD.

Oh, and we'll only go into the last day on 38 points if we get a point on Sunday!

I've been very positive with my forecasts for most of the season but I can't see us getting anything on Sunday. Spurs need the points to finish 4th, Redknapp will no doubt give the Hodgson doubters more ammunition, it really could turn very ugly. It really wouldn't surprise me if we got well and truly stuffed.

0-0 really will seem like a victory.

A nervy 1-0 home win. If a rubbish QPR can turn them over at Loftus Road, then we shouldn't be afraid - but that's it, McLeish is a master at sending out his team in a negative, defensive frame of mind which crushes their confidence.

I can't see us getting anything from this. They are better than us and are going for Europe and Arry and his bagpuss jowls one will have them fired up for this. Our guys just want this season to end and are petrified of being the player whose fcukup costs us the game. Spurs win by two goals.

I have a feeling we'll nick it 2-1.
All good sense suggests not but still, I have a hunch we'll play better than expected and Spurs might take us too lightly or get too comfortable in the large amount of possession they're bound to have.

Probable team:

Given
Hutton
Collins
Dunne
Lichaj
Herd
Clark
Warnock
Ireland
N'Zogbia
Agbonlahor

I can't see us winning this.   Spurs will have too much possession and will be busting a gut to cement 4th.  Quality will win out, and we'll lose 2-0.  McLeish to stay at Bodymoor claiming that Peter Grant's car was blocking him in, but not to read too much into that.

More wisdom from McLeish:

"McLeish he explored the possibility of calling on Bent for Villa's Barclays Premier League survival push.

But, although the 28-year-old striker is progressing well with his recovery from ankle surgery, it was decided not to risk him for the games against Tottenham or Norwich.

"I said 'are you ready to go on the bench at the weekend or something," said the Villa boss.

"He said: 'No, not quite, but I'm making good progress, so boss it might be too soon'.

"I don't believe there is a chance of him playing again for Villa this season.

"The doc thinks he's got a chance for the Euros though, so if he's talking he's talking about four or five weeks.

"He's running and he's working individually with the physios.

"I'm not sure if he's at the level of striking a ball yet, but he can't be far away from that now.

"The physios will still be working on him to get him back to his peak fitness again.

"We have to make sure he gets back good and proper."

He doesn't help himself does he?  Asks his star striker if he's ready to go on the bench, and doesn't know that he's not actually up to kicking a ball?!

Bent has rarely been kicking a ball when he has been playing this season, so I'm not sure if McLeish regards that as a requirement for playing.

McLeish to stay in bed claiming that his missus slept on the side nearest the door.Dunne to pick the team, we go two down in the first five minutes.

Collins and Hutton stagger onto the pitch still wearing deely-boppers from the night before, followed by a taxi-driver who they'd done a runner from.

Darren Bent plays in a leg-brace, scores a brace from the first corners we have scored from since Eric Houghton used to take them.

Taxi- driver scores last-minute winner. The boy's a bit special and we sign him on a Bosman at half-time as his contract with Abba Cars has run out. 3-2 and we celebrate safety, only to hear that QPR have beaten Stoke 56-1.

Last time around McLeish had a fully fit squad; Stan, Darren and all. He left N'Zogbia on the bench in favor of Hutton on the wing. And he left our Player of the Year elect Stephen Ireland out so a struggling Emile got a place in the team. Wrong game plan.

This time around I might give Heskey a go.

Don't embarrass us again Eck. 2-2 with Stephen Ireland playing out of his mind.

I dont think dropping Collins and Herd is a clever idea so late on in the season when we need all the players we can get.  Collins has been a great defender recently and Herd has been our stand out CM.  Delph is injured anyway so wouldnt be in contention.

I also predict I will inform the thick twat who sits next to me that he is just that and that after 5 years of listening to him talking shit in a really annoying, thick (as in mentally thick) sounding Brummie accent, I'm glad I will no longer have to hear it but that I still feel sorry for those who will have to put up with him in seasons to come.

Also, the next time he leans right across me with his arm when something might happen in the game, after 5 years of taking it and not saying anything, this will come to an end and he will be sitting on his arse in the aisle his seat is next to.

Tottenham will spray their anal musk in our faces and we'll gag on our own lumpy vomit.

Well I'm sure I have said either 1 or 2 nil now for the last 4 weeks so why change it? It has to be 1 - 0 to the Villa.

From Sporting Life:

DUNNE CALLS FOR UNITY

Aston Villa defender Richard Dunne has called on the fans who are planning a protest against manager Alex McLeish to unite behind the team at the crucial Barclays Premier League clash with Tottenham.

The match is Villa's final home game of the season and some supporters are planning to voice their views with 'McLeish Out' protests following the side's recent slump in form.

A section of Villa fans also took out a small back page advert in Saturday's Birmingham Mail.

The advert funded by a website run by Villa fans stated: "We were really hoping never to say this but....WE TOLD YOU SO. 'Bright Future?"'

There was no direct mention in the advert of McLeish but some sections of supporters called for him to be sacked during and after the home defeat against Bolton 11 days ago.

The Claret and Blues have not won in their last eight games and are just three points above the relegation zone.

To add to Villa's woes, midfielders Fabian Delph and Chris Herd and defender James Collins were disciplined internally by the club after they were involved in an altercation outside a nightclub in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

However, despite this, Dunne hopes the Villa Park faithful will throw their support behind the team.

"The fans want success and it's very difficult for everybody to understand why we're down there," Dunne told the Birmingham Mail.

"The situation has evolved over the season, which has caused the problems, and we need the fans.

"Everybody understands the frustrations, they're not happy with us as players and the management and the club as a whole.

"But we need the supporters because they want to watch Premier League football next season. The best thing they can do is support us and whatever happens, happens after that.

"We just need the fans to stick with us. We know ourselves it's not been good enough at times, but the effort is always there.

"For the last three weeks we need to pull in the same direction, we don't want anyone to think we're not doing our best.

"We want everyone to support us so that we can get out of this together." Dunne, who returned to action in last weekend's goalless derby game against West Brom following a two-month lay-off, says the squad know their Premier League fate is in their own hands and are not even considering relegation.

"You don't want (relegation) to even be in our thoughts," Dunne said.

"Our thoughts are to go and beat Spurs and then go and beat Norwich.

"It's not been a great season for us but we are where we are and we are sorting it out, then we can start again fresh next season.

"At this stage of my career I want to play in the Premier League, but if the club was to go down things change everywhere.

"If you look elsewhere with clubs who have gone down over the years there have been changes.

"Other clubs in the relegation battle are relying on other things and 'what ifs' but for us it is not.

"We win the games and we're in the Premier League next season."

Harry Redknapp's Spurs edged above Newcastle into fourth place following back-to-back wins over strugglers Blackburn and Bolton in their quest to secure a Champions League place.

With QPR being comprehensively thrashed 6-1 by Chelsea last weekend and Blackburn hosting fellow relegation candidates Wigan on Monday, results appear to be going McLeish's way.

The Scot looks set to receive a further boost ahead of the final two games of the season with the return of midfielder Stephen Ireland following a hip and hamstring injury.

Despite the threat of protests calling for his departure, the Villa manager believes his side will still do a lap of honour after the game to show their appreciation to the supporters.

"I would like to think the players will thank the fans for their support regardless (of the protests) so that should be a given," McLeish said.

"I don't think we're contemplating not taking points over the last two games.

"We've got to concentrate and focus on these last two games. That's certainly what I'm doing right now."

Just reading that piece above and knowing we're not mathematically safe with two games to go says to me the likes of DC5 (who's opinion is as valid as anyone else's on here) and the small minority who think McLeish should be given more time are totally wrong. We badly need a change in the summer.

As for the game today, it's going to be tough but i hope McLeish sees sense and drops Hutton. He struggled enough last week and the thought of Bale running at him is already making me want my first beer of the day. I'd play Herd there personally.

I was thinking Norwich would be a shoo-in, as they have nothing to play for, but now I am seriously worried.
I will be keeping an eye on Bolton v Stoke and QPR vs Baggies. If Wigan stuff Blackburn that may be saving grace even if Martinez and co finish above us. How did we end up here? Wigan may be our saviours in one respect, at least!

Surely a Blackburn win over Wigan is preferable? Rovers cannot catch us and it keeps Wiganon 37 points.

Agree.
Would keep Wigan in the mix and Blackburn can't get us due to much superior goal difference.

I still think its between us and qpr. Wigan and Bolton can go above us, and may well do. But qpr, even if they win this weekend, have to play man city away next week.

Yes, of course, but if Martinez takes Wigan higher it increases the chances of a certain person going for sure! Randy won't have that.

UTV..but we are where we are and need all the +ve vibes we can muster now!

I'm guessing McLeish will be absent from the 'lap of appreciation' which is a shame. If he stays in the dugout all game that will be even more ridiculous, he hasn't had anywhere near as much abuse as Steve Kean and you don't see him hiding.

Can't see anything other than a defeat, but I suppose our best hope is another 0-0.

Don't agree with that. The points/goal difference position is such that Blackburn beating Wigan is now the best result for us. Unless we get beaten 10-0 by Spurs they are unlikely to overhaul the goal differences. If Wigan lose they are still well in the mix. However,  it is probably still the QPR and Bolton results that are the more important.

Edit. By the time I had typed 5 more people had said the same thing.

I fear a 4-0 or something to Spurzz , which is worrying about goal difference  .

McLeish will go for a 0-0 , once Bale skins Hutton and sets VDV for 1-0 , it will all start falling to pieces .

I hate football at the moment .

I've felt like death since early in the week with a stinking cold. Been years since i've had one this bad. So we'd better get a result as i've decided to go today even though all common sense is telling me to stay at home.

Not worried by that. On present form (and tactics) I don't think we will miss Gabby, and we might create more chances.
