Petrov, Ireland and Weimann the big winners at annual awards
Winners from Villa's end-of-season dinner.

Stiliyan Petrov, Stephen Ireland and Andreas Weimann were the big winners at Villa's end-of-season dinner.

Austrian striker Weimann walked away with two gongs - Goal of the Season for his strike against Stoke City and the Young Player of the Year award.

Ireland won the Terrace Trophy which is handed to the Supporters' Player of the Year.

And skipper Petrov got the nod from his team-mates with the Players' Player of the Year.

The club captain was unable to attend the end-of-season dinner at the Holte Suite because he is currently undergoing treatment for acute leukaemia.

But Petrov passed on his appreciation in an emotional pre-recorded video message.

In the message, he thanked his team-mates and the claret and blue faithful for their support since he was diagnosed with the illness.

Eric Lichaj picked up the award for Best Goal Celebration for his 'chicken noodle soup' dance after scoring in the Carling Cup win over Hereford United.

First team coach and club legend Gordon Cowans was named Old Stars Player of the Year by the Aston Villa Former Players Association.

AVTV caught up with Ireland and Weimann shortly after they collected their awards.

Click here to watch Ireland's reaction to winning the Player of the Year gong.

Click here for Weimann's thoughts on his two awards.

Surprised that Ireland scooped the award ahead of Given.   Most improved player, aye.  If we had that as an award.  But Given has been outstanding from pretty much the first game at Fulham away.

Didn't they have a category for The Most Patient Fans In The Premiership Award?
Just a question!

With a respectful nod to Stan of course, the list of winners says it all really about our season. To think that a player like Stephen Ireland should win the terrace trophy.....dear me. And whilst it's nice that Weimann won the young player award, exactly how many minutes has he spent on the pitch this season?

I'm pleased Stan got the player of the year award and Weimann's deserved his goal of the season and young player of the seaon award.

Not really, at a Villa awards dinner. But well done for getting another dig at McLeish in.

Given was on 5Live this morning to talk about the Citeh - Ure game, the first couple of minutes were taken up with questions about the future of you know who and of course he came out with the usual guff about him being a very good manager waffle, waffle. Then he mentioned the awards and said as far as he is concerned none of them deserve any awards for the season we have gone through.

And he's absolutely right. Possibly a Young Player of the Year award, but certainly not the senior one.

Ireland?? - says it all really.

Young player? - I'd say Herd should have won this for the way that he helped Stan shore up our porous CMF, as well as one of two great games at RB.

Not to knock AW or anything.

Does that mean people voted for him ?
Does that mean some of these people can actually vote in 'proper' election ?

Just so we're clear, Ireland was chosen by the fans after a lot of games as Man Of The Match. The Points Table is as follows....

S.Ireland            32
G.Agbonlahor    23
S.Petrov            21
M.Albrighton    21
S.Given            18
C.Herd            16

A lot of people haven't seen this and are complaining all over Facebook so just thought I'd point it out!!

I personally think he is the deserving winner of the award, yet I'm surprised Weimann got the Young Player award over Herd. Saying that, Herd is 23, so not sure if he qualifies.

The voting for the Terrace Trophy takes place over the course of a season so should reflect what those who contribute to it have entered. Coming on here and saying that everybody is crap does not affect the ratings one iota.

Stephen Ireland was actually trending on Twitter last night.  The prevaling views being, "Stephen Ireland has won the fans award at Villa - shows how bad things are down there"

and

"Stephen Ireland has won the best player of the year award, or should that be the least rubbish player"

Both fair comments.

Typical Villa, all moaning about who got what. For me not one player who put that shirt on should have the privilege to win any kind of award this season...it has been a shambles, no one deserves "awards", you get them for achievements!

As long as they weren't breaking a club curfew, which with the next game not until Sunday and it being an official club night out may well be the case, then I simply ain't bothered about stuff like that.

Stephen Ireland? Dear Lord.
My thoughts too. The voting system clearly needs looking if it comes up with a player who started less then half the league games – and who switched off at so many vital times during the ones he did play.
Yes he's very talented – but he shouldn't be rewarded for wasting the talent he has.
The fact that Marc Albrighton had already clinched the POY award midway through last season is proof that the voting system is wrong.

Have been very busy since attending the awards on Monday night but wanted to share a couple of my observations on here.

Mood of the guests was okay, not sombre but people were clearly waiting for some words from the manager

Unfortunately that didn't happen. Real Opportunity missed.

Even a "It's been a sh1te season but thank you for your support and I'm sure we can count on you to back the lads for the final two matches...."

But nope, it wasn't said.

No show from our captain Gabby, players aloof and aside from Collins, Dunne and Given they didn't break ranks to converse with anyone that I saw.

The lack of success meant that the Chelsea game on NYE and Fulham at home were pretty much the only hgihlights shown on the loop - that and Marc Albrighton's award winning goal against Arsenal at home.

Goal celebration of the year , I was expecting throw in of the year and best coin toss.

Though born and bred a Brummie I now live in London and have had my fair share of shite drives home down the M40 this year, but this was as bad as post Bolton.

Let's hope the drives home after the next two Sundays are more positive.

I wouldn't be too concerned about having a chat with Gabby, you'd hardly miss hearing a few grunts and incoherent mumblings.

I still like him as a player, but he's thicker than a whale omelette.

Come to think of it, I wouldn't give a toss about meeting any of them.

Meeting legends like Brian Little or Paul McGrath is something to get excited about, I wouldn't cross the street to talk to any of our current lot.

Thanks for the update. So McLeish bottled a speech and has done nothing for 'team spirit'. The players should be encouraged to mix and no wonder fans feel disaffected from players these days. I've heard previously that Gabby has little time for AMC but that would not explain his lack of attendance.
Shambles.

The players pretty much huddled round together. You could get the odd word in but, apart from when I spoken to Weimann and maybe Delph, felt like you were intruding. That is why we don't normally go near them.
The one nice part of the evening was Stan's video message which was quite sad to watch and also when Des Bremner came round to draw for the signed football. Those stars of 82 are all a great bunch whenever you see them.

I'd guess that the 82 bunch were that bit closer to ordinary people, back then they were earning about 4 times the average wage, today's clowns earn about 80 times that.

The players pretty much huddles round together. You could get the odd word in but, apart from when I spoken to Weimann and maybe Delph, felt like you were intruding. That is why we don't normally go near them.
The one nice part of the evening was Stan's video message which was quite sad to watch and also when Des Bremner came round to draw for the signed football. Those start of 82 are all a great bunch whenever you see them.
I'd guess that the 82 bunch were that bit closer to ordinary people, back then they were earning about 4 times the average wage, today's clowns earn about 80 times that.

Correct.

Would I be opening myself up to all kind of ridicule if I suggested that if I'd been forced to vote for a Player of The Year it would have been between Richard Dunne and Shay Given?

For all of his critics, Dunne has been the only kind of 'character' and 'leader' on the pitch, yes he's had some tough times and poor games, but I think for every one of those, he's had a decent game (and when I say decent I don't mean an anonymous 6/10 performance).  As I say, I am aware there's a lot of Dunne knockers out there, but I think his performances this year stack up solidly against anyone.

Shay Given....yes I know he doesnt come off his line, no he hasn't been 'fantastic', but he's been pretty steady and not been at fault for many goals that I can remember.

Both I think have contributed more than Ireland or anyone else in claret and blue this season

I wonder if, before this season, our player of the year has only played  ten 90 minute games?

The lack of success meant that the Chelsea game on NYE and Fulham at home were pretty much the only hgihlights shown on the loop - that and Marc Albrighton's award winning goal against Arsenal at home.

Shows how far we've sunk this year, all very sad.

stephen ireland fans player, what a load of arse, lazy twat! loads of talent but only shows it when he wants to. Chris herd, richard dunne, james collins or stan petrov for me. gave most of what they had and as i fan that is what i would give!
robbie keane for goal of season against wolves but weimanns was pretty good and young player would have been herd easily.

Ireland has put in a shift in every game he's played this season, he hasn't been remotely lazy.

I know footballers are a bit dim and maybe wary of interacting with fans, but you'd think that, just for one evening of the year, they could go out of their way and speak to a few people.

As for lack of a word from the Ginger Mourinho, I'm glad to hear that, it looks like more evidence that he'll be on his bike come the end of the season, and we'll never have to put up with his horrible, depressing, austere nonsense again.

If I were a footballer having to mingle with fans after the season we'd just had, I would expect that anyone coming to talk to me would probably be wanting to hurl abuse at me for the shit season we'd had. And I expect lots of people given the opportunity probably would do just that.

I don't really blame them for not wanting a dozen people coming up them explaining that they should be marking better on corners and telling them that they want the manager sacked.

I don't think anyone going to talk to them would be offering their congratulations.

Couldn't agree more with this.

One thing I will add which deserves recognition is the attitude of those working for the club in new client relationships, the ticket office. club shop and marketing. To a man (or woman where applicable) you can tell that they care. I know a few of them well and they're hurting just like us but don't have the vehicle or medium to express it. From McLeish it was exactly what it has been all season...a celebration of apathy.  We still have a lot of people at this club who genuinely care, I get the impression these feelings will be released should Randy wake up from his spell and take decisive action for the good of all (Mc Leish included).

I don't think that there are too many footballers for whom that sort of behaviour would be out of character.

You can *almost* excuse young lads like Herd and Delph, who were possibly just young and naive.  But that tosser Collins?  As I said, this is the second late night fracas he's been involved with, and as a senior professional he should be setting a better example.

Midfielder Delph said: "I was sober, I was in control of my actions and I did try to calm down the situation. I didn't hit or strike anyone but I should not have been there and I was wrong to be in this position."

God we are turning into Birmingham. I have got the good days to look back on, from the Third Division onwards. But my kids haven't. It is quite hard down here for children to support the Villa, and whilst mine were initially pushed by me in that direction, they have kept their old man happy by continuing, despite ridicule from some of their peers. But if this is the future, it makes me wonder whether I should actively encourage them to support Charlton. A nice family orientated club. Or even Gillingham. In forty odd years of actively supporting Villa I have knowm many bad times. But they were bad times that, somehow, you looked back on almost with fondness. They were honest bad times that made the good times seem better. Never before have I felt that the Villa, or at least the playing side, from top to bottom, needs fumigating or disinfecting.

If it hadn't been caught on camera-phone I doubt it would have made the paper. Looked like much ado about nowt, being refuse to go back into a club or something. The players possibly giving it the ''Do you know who I am?'' but all in all...meh. Just like our season.

Why oh why did this event get scheduled before the end of the season?

Should it not have been at the END of the season.....or are the players all pi**ing of on their jolly hols as soon as the whistle blows at Norwich.

If it had been held after relegation perhaps their delicate egos would have felt a bit dented.....I don't think so.

Perhaps we should request it to be moved to the end of September/October next season?

Herd is the biggest disappointment.

To be honest none of them should be excused for that, just because a couple were young and one in particular has done well this season. They will all know it's wrong to do that and should be punished. More evidence that the club is a mess.

Agreed, it should be after the end of the season - especially this season as there is still so much to play for.  I despair.
