Title: 1992/93
Post by: pauliewalnuts on April 30, 2012, 04:39:52 PM
Watching this compilation on YouTube and it makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

What a fucking side we were then. What a side.

I've watched that a lot this season. Thankfully we have our memories of better times to keep us going!

Probably my (very close) second favourite season watching Villa as an adult. Only beaten by 95/96 and that's largely in part because it was Brian in charge it made it all even sweeter.

I think Dalian won 2 or three goal of the months, what a season,20 years ago fcuk me.

Totally agree with you there, my 2 favourite seasons too. Fantastic games, fantastic kit and goal of the month contenders every month. 92/93 was my first season as a season ticket holder, and we havent finished that high up the table since. My favourite game that season was the home game against Sheffield Wednesday which we won 2-0 (i think), where we scored that fine team goal and a game we could have easily won 10-0 if it wasnt for Chris Woods who had a blinder in the Wednesday goal. I think eveyone remembers Dalians goal at Wimbledon, but my favourite goals was Deanos against Ipswich with that amazing volley which I was right behind. Great days.

If only BFR hadn't dropped Yorke for the run in,we would've been Champions.

Indeed, what a season that was.  As 'exiled' says, the 2-0 win against Sheffield Wednesday was possibly the mos complete team performance from a Villa side that I've witnessed.  Not a bad period that from 92-96.  A second place finish, a 4th place, a 5th place and two League Cups, and some brilliant European nights.  Some great players, lots of wonderful football and two of my favourite managers.

How the hell Dalian's goal against Wimbledon didn't get in the top 10 all time Premiership goals is beyond me!

I'd go further. The 90s were good for villa. Two second place finishes, regular European nights and trips to Wembley, two trophies and didn't we go something like seven /eight years without dropping out of the top 8? Between 1995-96 and 02/03?

Compared to the 70s, 80s and 90s, the new millennium has been terrible for villa!

And what a team goal by Yorke against Shef Weds.  Happy memories.

Some of the football we played that season, particularly in the few months after we signed Saunders, was outstanding.  Such a pity that Man Yoo went on that freak run from about December onwards, they were about 12th in the league when they signed Cantona.

Ah well, the good times will be back one day.

Each one was like a kick in the bollocks.  I'll also never forget the feeling in the game against Oldham either.

Agreed. The celebrations of Ferguson & Brian Kidd still make me sick to my stomach when I see them.

But some great memories, can't believe it's 20 years.

It makes me want to take a pick axe to their fat faces.

I saw a documentary a few years ago and it mentioned that game as the invention of 'Fergie time' in a "He's a bit of an old rascal" sort of way.  Strangely no mention of the fact it cheated us out of the title.

Lovely memories, thanks. I'll never tire of seeing Dalians goal.

I remember being in my usual bottom right Holte position against Ipswich thinking 'don't shoot from there' followed moments later by 'fucking hell!'

Garry Parker is rarely mentioned these days but that has reminded me what a fine player he was

I can still vividly remember the sickening feeling after we had drawn against Coventry and United scored those 2 goals in the 96th and 98th minute to beat Sheffield Wednesday. I knew the title was gone that day.

That Sheffield Wednesday game was the first thing that came into my head as Aguero smashed home the winner against QPR on Sunday.

Not dancing on the pitch this time are you Alex ?

Parker was one of my favourite Villa players from the '90s. scored some fantastic goals for us, but for some strange reason he's been forgotten about. It bugs me that average joes like Mellberg, Laursen and now Cueller are talked about as if they're "legends", when far better players like Parker barely get a mention.

Garry Parker was a good player and is just one of a few from that team that don't get mentioned very often.  Kevin Richardson was a real leader in the midfield and formed a good partnership with Parker.  Ray Houghton was also a very good player who had real quality on the ball.  I also really rated Earl Barrett and remember that Ryan Giggs used to say back then that he was his hardest opponent.

I was in the Holte that day as well, the first match I saw with my current missus. I thought exactly the same thing. I think our other goal that day was great as well, a move down the left finished by Yorke. What a season it was. 20 years, where's that time gone?

We had four out of the nine goals in MOTD's Goal Of The Season shortlist that season, we just played some lovely stuff. That Yorkie goal against Sheff Wed was one of the finest team goals I've ever witnessed - didn't every outfield player feature in the buildup?
I'm still gutted we didn't win the league. Thanks a bunch Mr fucking Ridsdale for selling Cantona to United for a pittance.

It was Wilkinson who did not want him.

Equally forgotten is that Trevor Francis was manager at Wednesday and asked Cantona for a week's trial. The recently banned French international ( sent of and banned for a few games for chucking the ball at the ref; at the subsequent tribunal he pointed at each of the French FA suits and told them one by one "you are a c*#t") told him to go tickle his chihuahua and Wilkinson stepped in to take him to Leeds.  The rest is just ugly history.

One of those great "If only..." seasons.  Probably went to about two-thirds of our fixtures that season and for sheer enjoyment if was right up there.

Just a pity that my abiding memories are (i) knowing that that was probably that 10 minutes after we'd finished playing against Coventry; (ii) having that confirmed when we were two down at Blackburn before Man Utd had even kicked-off against Palace and (iii) the feeling of total sickening emptiness after losing to Oldham.  To make matters worse, the next day (Bank Holiday) I went walking in the Peak District and then drove home along the A6 past pub after pub festooned with United flags and banners and seeing cavorting Mancs out celebrating... before then having to want them to beat Blackburn to ensure that we at least came runners-up.

It was a great season and my last full season of seeing Villa before I moved to New Zealand. I probably went to more games home and away that season than any other and loved every game. We were brilliant to watch that season and scored so many great goals.

I remember watching a programme on Sky, about players that had played in the first season of the Premiership (when football was invented), and what they were up to now. Gary Parker was working as a painter and decorator. When you think of all the shit we've had down VP since then, that are now multi millionaires, who will never have to work another day in their lives, it makes you sick!

On the coaching staff at Celtic now though, looking super-tanned.

He was a bit fat and lacked pace, but he was a proper footballer.

That team goal against Wednesday is still astonishing. If Barcelona scored that this season, they'd be talking about it for years, as they still are with Cambiasso's goal for Argentina in the 2006 World Cup.

The moment that electrifies me though, is when Atkinson has taken the ball through the midfield, and just before he lobs the keeper he stops for half a second as if to say "Is everybody watching? Good, then look at this."

Yeah that's me haha Roger Milford told me to f**k off lol It was only when I turned to run back that I realized how far I'd ran, edge of the bloody area!! Stewards were legging it from both sides of the stand to get me and I managed to dive back in the crowd. Good old days!! I'll see if I can get the vhs tape put on a dvd.

BFR should have kept in-form Dwight in the team instead of the returning Dalian. Dean Saunders goal output had also dried up but he was still playing well - I recall he hit the post several games on the trot during the run in. Of course it didn't help Man United getting 25 mins overtime vs Sheff Wed.

I seem to remember that Kanchelskis was a mile offside for their winner at Norwich

Or did I dream that?
