...but wont because were not united:
http://t.co/FvKhsQm3 (http://t.co/FvKhsQm3)
Dear Aston Villa Fans, Board and Management
We feel that after the press release by the board on the 25th April we need to put across the fans perspective. Whilst this has been vetted by several fans (some well known, some not) we’d like to point out that while we could never speak for everybody, we feel we will be speaking for the vast majority of fans from our respective dealings with fans that are friends, on match day, on twitter, and on villa forums.
Randy Lerner and Paul Faulkner’s joint statement stated that we “right now everyone connected with Villa is hurting badly” and at this time it is more apparent than ever this statement is correct.
Alex McLeish appointment was never a popular one, some areas of the press have said this is because of his connection to Birmingham City Football Club, and while this may be true for a very small minority of fans who take local allegiances too far. The majority of us saw this as a bad signing for reasons that have since been proven during his tenure at the club;
His terrible style of play, premiership record and inability to accept blame.
We are reasonable comfortable in the knowledge that we will not challenge for the Premier League trophy in the foreseeable future with the Mega-Rich alliance of teams that dominate the top 6 of the league. But as Villa fans we want to see a team play decent football and try and win games. This is not Alex McLeish’s style as Graham Taylor said about his tactics:
“looks like you are preparing a side not to lose”
This dour football he serves up as lead to him having the worst record of any of our Premier League managers in terms of point per game and win ratios, he has now got the worst home wins record in the entire length of our history and as you can see from the below Stats he is close to the record of the last manager to relegate us Billy McNeill: (villa career v nearest 2 managers)
Alex McLeish 1.08 Pts per game 23% win ratio
Graham Taylor (02-03) 1.18 ppg 32% wr
David O’Leary 1.34 ppg 36% wr
Billy McNeill 1.02ppg 22% wr
This record along with his current form as manager has proven what the majority of Aston Villa fans have said from the appointment and protested against… that Alex McLeish is not of the quality to manage Aston Villa Football Club and should be removed as manager.
The board chose to release a statement after a loss to Bolton Wanderers (placed 19th in the league at the time) that said
“We very openly acknowledge the frustrations of Villa fans and share in them completely”
Yet they chose to appoint a manager with 2 relegations from the Premier League in three years and ignore our protests about this. If the board shared our frustrations they would sack Alex McLeish with immediate effect and appoint a Caretaker to the role until the summer when a promising manager with a decent style of football could be appointed.
This would boost the atmosphere at Villa Park, ticket sales and season ticket renewals whilst showing they do understand the fans and will listen to us.
By issuing the statement as they did when fans were so upset and standing by a manager that has such a poor record we have question if they do share our concerns, goals and targets for our club. A 5 year plan set out by Randy Lerner seemed to be abandoned around the time of Martin O’Neill’s departure and left with cost cutting measures and poor managerial appointments which cost us £12million last year alone. By keeping by the side of manager who ticks none of the boxes necessary to keep the fans onside and Villa Park attendances up they seem to be ignoring the fans basic need of watchable football and hoping they will pay regardless.
Randy Lerner in a rare interview once said:
‘I’m what you call the custodian. There have been plenty of custodians of Aston Villa since 1874 and if I can’t make it work, I will do what the others did, move on and let someone else try.’ Lerner – Aug 2006
As Villa fans we would like you to act like a custodian and do what the vast majority of Villa fans want and remove Alex McLeish from our club. If you are “hurting badly” you can remove the pain and press on with the “bright future” promised…..
Or are you a custodian in a prison warden sense and want to keep us locked up in this situation…..
May 6th will be “McLeish Out Day” at Villa Park. If you are our custodian you will see that us organising this during such a run has taken a lot to do and we ask that changes are made and (unlike the past few games) Villa Fans are allowed to display our feelings during the game through banners and placards.
Note: Games calculated include cup games. So 3 points are allocated for a win in that case. (for you vitalvilla kids ;0)

AN OPEN LETTER TO MY MILKMAN
we, the supporters of Aston Villa, demand that you deliver four pints of semi-skimmed tomorrow, but no more of that horrible Greek yoghurt that nobody eats
Signed,
the supporters of Aston Villa

Is it has much as 23% win rate ?
We've won 7 of 35 games so far this season. That's 20%
-
We won 50% of our cup games this season. McLeish in!
-
Hi everyone who cant read the last line... the record i used is his TOTAL GAMES INCLUDING CUPS. so 3 points given for a win. All explained if you read. And click the link to the stats,
Tah...
-
great another new thread
-
Might help if you spell George Ramsay correctly. And i'm pretty sure he wasn't manager for 1327 games.
-
It’s definitely an improvement on the one Cuz’s friend wrote.
Sometimes I think that the letters would be better sent to journalists so they can stop repeating the “where he came from” lie. They’d lap up the stats quoted as it’d look like they’d done some research. Once the press are onside then Randy from his laptop in Cleveland will hopefully realise that it is not just a small minority moaning.

I'm not particularly on board with this letter implying we accept not challenging for honours as long as we play nice football. Who are we, West Ham? I'm sure a good few Villa fans feel we need to be competing and winning trophies too.
-
Yet again, badly written with appalling grammar. No standards some people.
-
I dunno, I find these worthy letters puporting to represent us a bit humdrum. They lack passion. I think a delegation should visit the club and present in the style of X Factor auditions with the songwriters from the Song for McLeish thread each performing their efforts.
-
Urgh. Another fucking open letter. Just send it and miss out the internet.

I'm up for that. I'll have cymbals on my knees and a mouth organ on a bit of wire in a proper one man band style.

There needs to be some variety so someone is going to have to convey their concerns with McLeish through dance and/or mime.

I have to agree with that Nigel, this negative stuff is NOT helping the guys that can do something about it ON the pitch.
I'd rather we stay up THEN replace the Manager still in the Prem.
-
Can you fuck off to Canon Hill Park on May 6th for your "McLeish out Day" please – there's an important game on at Villa Park that day.
-
If Twitter has nothing else to answer for, it should be forever blamed for Joey Barton and his idiot cohorts putting a hash in front of everything they want to talk about.

Tim, the problem is if we do stay up then he will more than likely keep his job.

Great. Someone else who thinks "not united" = "should do what I say." Welcome to the site, by the way. It's only taken you 13 years to find it.

Again, the thoughts behind the letter are good but it is impossible to get the full backing of fans when it's written in this way. Too much of it is based on the opinion of the writer.
Stick to the facts, and where observations are required make it clear that they are exactly that.
something like:
Dear Randy/Paul/whoever
After nearly a full season under the management of Alex McLeish it is now a fair time to review his performance to date.
7 league wins (and 36 points) from 35 games is the worst points per game the club has experienced in 25years, with the previous season of this standard seeing us relegated from the then first division. With only 4 of those wins coming at Villa park our home record is officially the worst in the history of the club. This record also sees McLeish have a win % with the club of just 20% (in league games). His record with Birmingham City in the premier league saw 26 wins in 100 games does not suggest this season has been an anomaly.
Many fans have also been disappointed by what has been perceived as a negative defensive style of football which has seen just 36 goals in our 35 league matches to date. Again this is not out of line with his time at Birmingham City, which saw 108 goals in those same 100 premier league games.
Attendances during the season have often been poor the last 2 games against Sunderland and Bolton seeing 32557 and 32263. This is in contrast to the average of 37,273 from the previous season. Based on personal conversations and internet forums it seems likely this will drop further next season.
Given the above statistics for this season, and the evidence from previous seasons, I (and many other villa fans) believe that is is in the best interests of the club to terminate our association with McLeish immediately.
I would also recommend that playstyle be considered an important factor by reviewing the performances of the youth and reserve sides in the club and attempting to appoint a manager that will continue this style into the first team. This will allow a much easier transition into the first team squad for our younger players who many Villa fans believe have the potential to push us into a much higher position in the table.
Regards
Paul
I'm not sending this myself and have posted it rather to show people what I think would be a much more accepted format for a letter to the club. Feel free to pick it apart and make changes.
-
Exactly Paul, thank you. I'd happily put my name to that.
-
7 league wins (and 36 points) from 35 games is the worst points per game the club has experienced in 25years
Points per game is misleading - dosent take account the change from 2 points for a win to 3 and it makes McLeish's record look better than it actually should

Given that I've specified the last 25 years I didn't really consider it as a problem but I do get your point.

It makes it bloody difficult for us to keep an eye on this site when there's threads opening every five minutes saying the same things. it's not even as though we're pleasant at the best of times.

This sort of thing pisses me off.
I can't stand being told what I should do by someone preaching at me.
The timing of this is ridiculous, we need to get behind the team right now.. The manager will not be sacked until the end of the season at the earliest so save the effort and put your energy into support.
Please.

So you would rather he was an utter failure than just a failure? Are you saying you want to take the chance on the board sacking him if we go down?

Whoever wrote the diatribe in the OP needs to be educated in grammar and punctuation.
-
I refuse to give any credibility to anyone who can't correctly spell the name one of the most important men in our history. Or who thinks he managed over 1000 games.
On the flip side I doubt RL or PF would spot the mistakes.
-
Feel free to send all the open letters you want chaps, just don't expect me to want to read them. Why, oh why does everyone who writes one think it is so excellent that everyone should read it? I, for one, don't. Once you have read one, you have read them all.
-
The one thing I would say in defense of the statement from the Villa Management is that it was short and to the point. The people who write all these rambling open letters should take note.
-
I'm just shocked Damon has a milkman that delivers Greek yoghurt.
What interesting times we live in.

Two pots, every Saturday, regular as clockwork. Mrs Green ordered it around the same time she decided to get up every morning at 6 and go swimming. Say this about the milkman, at least he's kept his side of the bargain.

I can remember the milkman coming round our old estate in a horse and cart.
And we had a bread man. And a pop man (Alpine)
-
I remember when I was a nipper we'd visit my nan who lived in Tividale and there was a pop man who used to come round.
Edit: Chico beat me to a pop man reference.
-
My first 'job' as a 17 year old in 1975 was helping on a Corona pop round on a Thursday evening in Handsworth Wood. Will be good to be 'back home' tomorrow for a pre-match drink in the Royal Oak.

Hi. looking at the link youll see the maths use 3 points.

Perhaps if you could write in something resembling English and dropped all that "If we were united" bollocks you might be taken more seriously.

What, all 27,527 of them? Well done. It's nice to be told I'm thick by someone who made seven grammatical and spelling errors in 19 words.
You've got a persuasive way of getting us on your side though, I'll say that.

No he didn't. Maybe if you learnt the basics of our history you'd know that.
And there is a difference between a simple typo like your and you're, and not knowing how to spell the name of one of the greatest men in our history.

It's all timetabled:
12.55am - laugh at you.
1.05am - sort out the problems of a (any one in particular?) club.
If you've got a degree, why do you write and act like you're about 14? And do you have any idea of the irony of you coming on here and pretending to be an authoritative source on Villa managers?

You could try Peter Morris: The First 100 Years, or any edition of The Complete Record, Or The Aston Villa Chronicles, or the book about our managers that Dave wrote. Or any of the other sources of correct information about our history that exist and have done for years now.

There's a guy over on VT with the initials JL who claims to be the primary source of facts for all things 'Villa'. Oh, and that thing before the letter 's' in the first word of the previous sentence is called an apostrophe. ;)

Yeah it is. Ive told everyone all season we're likely to go down to abuse. I want the £100 bet i have on it to come off now.

Oh and to Peter withes shin.... I'll go buy a book for quickly put together table to show the stats on premier league managers.... Grow up.
Bye all. Glad you extended your typical reaction and thanks for allowing the football at villa park to happen this year when we go down ill put a few quid of that money i win to a cigar for you all...

I must say, the sheer force of your argument is certainly winning me over.
Do all your little friends in this protest know you want us to go down?

Bye all. Glad you extended your typical reaction and thanks for allowing the football at villa park to happen this year when we go down ill put a few quid of that money i win to a cigar for you all...
Jolly good. Make sure you light the right end.

So you want Villa to go down, you know jack about our history, quite obviously have zero interest in actually learning the truth of our history but you expect us to take you seriously?

Somebody used to say I got Savo the sack. Now I'm responsible for the entire season. That's progress.

And with that answer, we all know that you do not have a degree. No one, not even a first year undergrad, would trust wikipedia, let alone cite it.

I think the most effective form of protest would be for lernerslegoset to zip himself up in a holdall in the bath and wait for Randy to come and find him.
-
Yeah it is. Ive told everyone all season we're likely to go down to abuse. I want the £100 bet i have on it to come off now.
Who was this poster previously? He's 'told everyone all season' but only appeared yesterday.
-
See Dave, aren't you glad for this post now, we'd never have known what a pedant was or that you are personally responsible for the quality of football this season if it had been locked or merged elsewhere.
As for the opening poster, there is absolutely no chance you have a degree, even in a subject which you believed would allow you to justify poor spelling and grammar.
I work very closely with a number of universities support the online assignment submissions. I know what happens with those assignments which includes automated text checking. The system used would fill the screen with alerts if it received a higher education standard document with the amount of errors you had in that letter.
The reason people are critical on here is that, if you're not sure of your grammar and are writing a letter you want to use to represent all fans, it's really not hard t paste it into word and do a spelling and grammar check. That won't fix everything but would be enough to not get the pages of criticism you've had. If you've got enough time to write it and post it on here you've got enough time to check for basic errors. You're unlikely to get picked up for using a comma instead of a semi-colon but using a instead of an and youre instead of you're are primary school mistakes and devalue the entire letter (god that youre is annoying, all underlined in red like a big idiot stamp, thanks chrome spell check)
Finally, in one post you say you've been on the site for a long time, if this is true you should have been well aware that your letter would get this treatment if it contained these errors, if you can't take the criticism don't post things that are supposed to represent the people on here with that many errors, it's that simple. If you go back a few pages I've posted a letter that would pass scrutiny for most on here. You'd still get replies of "why post it online, you attention seeker" but the majority of complaints on here wouldn't exist.

Bloody hell, I have an early night for once and I miss this.

Do milkmen still exist? I thought the last one died in captivity in 1983...
Yeah one bastard scraped all the side of my car two years ago and didn't report it. I had no idea who done it until it was too late to report it to the police as I had left it over 30 days. A lady further down the road from us witnessed it but after it happened she saw him walk up to my house so she thought he was letting me know. What he was actually doing was delivering 2 pints to my next door neigbour. The bastard.
-
Will there be anything else on this thread that hasn't been said on a dozen others?
Yes, my next door neigbours milk man is a bastard.
-
I'm actually not that bothered about the spelling or the grammar, it's just the expectation that I should fall in behind his banner.

I'm a man trapped inside a woman's body.
I've been to Wolverhampton. But I've never been to me.

I'm the opposite. I'm a sucker for a well written piece of work. I'll vote Labour next time as long as their manifesto has apostrophes in all the right places.

"May 6th will be “McLeish Out Day” at Villa Park. If you are our custodian you will see that us organising this during such a run has taken a lot to do and we ask that changes are made and (unlike the past few games) Villa Fans are allowed to display our feelings during the game through banners and placards."
Do what you like as long as it stays out of the ground for 90+ minutes and it's support the Villa untill we're hoarse!
Its worked well so far. Well done
What's worked so far? And 'Well done' for what?
Is it too much to ask for 90+ minutes of actually supporting our team? Forget about feelings for AMcL, you can do that before and after the game!
-
What we should remember with idiots like this is that getting people onside and attracting support isn't their aim. In their mind they're right, anyone who disagrees with them is wrong and all that matters is winning some strange game of which only they know the rules. followed by boasting about it to their friends.

I have to agree with that Nigel, this negative stuff is NOT helping the guys that can do something about it ON the pitch.
I'd rather we stay up THEN replace the Manager still in the Prem.
Tim, the problem is if we do stay up then he will more than likely keep his job.
to be honest Pongo, I thought that too, but, I just can't see it now.
I've always said he should be given to at least Xmas to build his team and show he can do it, but I really believe he'll be on his way at the end of the season.

Great. Someone else who thinks "not united" = "should do what I say." Welcome to the site, by the way. It's only taken you 13 years to find it.
Hi Dave. Been here a long time. Thanks for the kind words. Guessing you disagree with the rest or just like him to stay?
You haven't been here a long time - you joined on Friday.

Exactly.
If we're honest, I think 95% of us had major doubts about the choice the board decided upon last summer. But we *wanted* so badly to be wrong. I find it odd that someone would take delight in their misgivings being proven right in this instance - because for that to occur, the team would need to be in trouble. And we are.
It's a weird type of Villa fan who actually wants that to come to pass, and positively revels in it.

This is exactly how I felt. I couldn't believe it was happening but after a couple of days I wanted to just look at anything positive about AM and try and believe there must be some ounce of logic in hiring him and just hope that now he is at Aston Villa he would succeed and prove me wrong.
-
Would anyone care for a bet that if the names of the "well known" Villa supporters who had vetted that letter were revealed, every single one of them would have either a blog or a website?
-
This lernerslostit who wants a "McLeishout Day" goes by the name of Houllierout on VT by the looks of it.
Sounds like a touch of counselling is needed before he becomes the next Jesus Gil.
-
I've just had a pork loin sarnie. I did think about throwing it up just in case I didn't like it.. I'd have won either way.
-
You know when someone in a football crowd yells an incoherent torrent of nothingness, looks around, realises that everyone is either laughing at them or ignoring them and then proceeds to hurl childish abuse at their fellow fans?
This is the internet forum equivalent.

I know we moan about them, but I reckon we’ll miss it when we don’t get our daily dose of ranting.
Personally I want to see more letters to Randy.
We said that about dazzyg and then he came back as another clown.

The Alpine pop man is still going.

I think these letters should have a maximum of 140 characters.

I can remember the milkman coming round our old estate in a horse and cart.
And we had a bread man. And a pop man (Alpine)
Ahh, the Alpine man. Got me out of detention when I said I had to get home to wait for the Alpine man.
Can you still get Cream Soda?

Didn't he once score two against us at Wembley?
