I noticed against Sunderland that McLeish and Ireland had a bit of a row during 2nd half, hope that got nothing to do with it.

Ireland was head and shoulders mate. Every decent attacking move, and a lot of defensive. Why on earth, when Bolton are light in midfield, you would drop your most creative player when needing to win is beyond me. The man is a total idiot.

Even if out, surely Gardner is a better bet with Herd than Warnock in a 2? Unless.... Heskey is playing in central midfield, NZogbia up top, with Warnock down the left of midfield.

I'm guessing Warnock in the centre of mid. Has played there often enough before so shouldn't be too much of a problem, but obviously not a like for like switch.

I noticed against Sunderland that McLeish and Ireland had a bit of a row during 2nd half, hope that got nothing to do with it.

If they rowed and Ireland sulked and refused instructions then he’s be justified in dropping him, but his work rate and general play did not suggest this happened.  This just strikes of AMc’s ego getting in the way of the team’s success.

Kind of a negative Fairy Godmother.  How on earth?  Ireland looked ok on Saturday!

Perhaps Warnock has been stunning them all at BH with his midfield play, during training. Good on him for taking this on at this stage, it can't be easy.

He must be injured if not on the bench. That's a very odd team. Not much in the way of passing ability in that side. I fear he's just made a massive blunder. Let's hope not.

I presume warnock in centre midfield and assume that mcleish thought we just had to have experience

I really struggle to see us keeping the ball properly, which we're bad enough at the best of times

Worried

I think there is 1 thing that is certain. We are going long ball tonight. Hopefully NZog and Albrighton will push on and try and help out the Wee-man get on the end of the big mans flicks.

Oh shit what a bad team this looks... You can't even call that a midfield it looks so pathetic and weak.

If Ireland is injured why play Herd and Warnock where that gives bolton the opportunity to exploit that weak area. Why is he leaving out Bannan and Gardner when we literally have no starting midfielders??? Wtf McLeish SMH.

I dont see how we can win with this team tonight. It's not looking good fellas.

My stream just said we're going 433. With Albrighton in the midfield 23. I, uh, I hope not.

Sad to see Warnock in midfield over Gardner or Bannan, but he's gone for experience I guess.

That is what the telegraph were reporting too.

If it is the case though, surely Gardner or Bannan is a better bet than Albrighton?

Well, yeah, obviously. Albrighton as a CM is crazy.. Like straight jacket crazy.

Has to be 442 today, surely.

Love seeing Cuellar as captain. I'm all for him being our captain next season.

What's been noticeable so far is how good a job Bogdan does of covering behind his defence, very quick to come out if the pass is long, it means their defence can play a higher line.  Given doesn't do this for us so we end up dropping deeper.

Best Villa have played this season I think. The key is off the ball: we haven't stood off, we've pressed them, not stopped pressing as the half has gone on and kept working the ball short. There are still frustrations, still unnecessary hoofing, but Heskey is playing well enough in the role he should be playing (here's the clue: it's not the Beckenbauer role) that we're getting enough of the ball to play our football. This is much better.

Oopht, that was close though.

Good performance. I feel sick though. To give him his due, Warnock and especially Herd is working really well in central midfield. N'Zogbia a threat. Albrighton not.

Need to put in the same performance second half with composure in attack and defence

Bolton have been awful.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Bolton Wanderers Match Thread
Post by: ozzjim on April 24, 2012, 08:34:44 PM
We have been superb. Heskey doing what he does best, if he played this way all the time you would not hesitate to play 4-4-2 with him up top with Bent ideally.

Only disappointment is that Albrighton and NZogbia have been poor delivery wise. Warnock and Herd are doing a great job at the moment, if we lose, it will be the unluckiest game of the season. Best I have seen us play sustained for a full 45 minutes. Lead really well by Emile. I will be gutted if we don't win, for once we really deserve to.

I am sure I remember being at Villa park a few years back when we were playing a Bolton side managed by FatSam at that particular time, having an outrageous amount of posession, hitting the woodwork countless times, chances going begging, and then Bolton scoring a breakaway goal with about ten to go. I remember being back in the pub gobsmacked and could not figure out how we had lost and never feeling so robbed and unjust in my life with regards to the Villa.

Anyone else remember this? I would hazard a guess about 5 years ago? It may of been a night or evening kick off on a Saturday.

Was it in MON's first season, 5.15 Saturday kick off?

Terrible crowd, 27k or so

Thats the puppy, explains why I was back in the pub at a reasonable time. Absolute daylight robbery!

Unlike that!! You beauty!!!!!!!!!!

Albrighton is the weak link completely. Could we get Gardner on coming from the right?

The better change would be to play gardner at the point of a triangle ahead of the other 2.  Definitely need to make a change in the middle as we're conceding too much space and too much of the ball.

Great finish by Warnock and superb play by nzog, thank fuck for that.

I honestly wouldn't have thought that even a manager as utterly fucking incompetent as McLeish could take a first half performance like that, and turn it into a shambles in the second half AGAIN against a team who had, until that point, looked like by far the worst team I'd seen this season.

Just what could he have said to change the game like it has changed?

Whatever he said all the other times we did exactly this.

Can't blame the manager for missed chances.  We created more in the first half of this game than we have done in about 5 matches previously.  Said it a while ago.  Relegation teams are unlucky as well as shit.  Were both right now.

I thought it was appropriate that Steve Staunton is in the crowd. Another ginger defender who was given a job he was completely incapable of doing and turned an okay team into a laughing stock - sound familiar?

For people saying what can he do about it, they changed their shape and style at halftime and got a target man on for them to hit and play off.  He did fuck all to counter it, same as all season.  they scored twice and he still didn't react, even when he did it was 2 like for like changes.  As I type he's made a change late in the 87minute which eventually is a change in shape for us.  He's totally inept, every now and then he stumbles on something that works for a half but generally he does nothing to prepare the team or come up with a plan of how we're going to beat the opposition.
