Hi All
Not really much in the way of footage, but i've just seen an old ITV advertisement for the Aston Villa v Barcelona 1978 match;
&feature=related
It starts approximately 4:25 and goes on for 15seconds.
Thanks,
Nick

This is the game which taught me at an early age never to leave a game early and I haven't ever since my Dad uttered those immortal word 'This game's over lets get off and miss the traffic' only to get half way down the steps of the Holte before we heard the roar of a Villa goal. He ridiculously made me run back up as though he expected to see a replay before saying 'Come on then its definately all over now' and yes we were at the bottom of the Holte as the equaliser went in.
It was then a mad dash home in time to catch the highlights as shown in the advert

I think this was the night that Allan Evans first came on to my radar as one who may be worth watching.

Wonderful - thanks Nick :)

Great stuff, tv from the 70's you have to love it!
-
What a great night that was, especially the end!
It was a privelige to see Cruyff even if he wasn't at the top of his game and our come back was tremendous.
-
I was going to say "Cruyff will show just how he earns half a million a year" and guffaw at how Tevez earns that in a fortnight, but then it occurred to me that 10k a week in 1978 is an enormous amount of cash.

Yes, you could buy a Capri for £3500 (if you didn't win one in the Daily Express that is).

Loved the advert for the Ford Capri.
-
It's a shame there doesn't appear to be any footage of the match on youtube. Perhaps one day someone might stick it on :)
Cheers,
Nick

ITV in the 1970s was as shit as it is now compared with the Beeb but the clip is great. I guess the football was done by ATV as Huge Ones did the introduction.
Lots of Thames television there which I never liked always preferring our local news coverage. Bob Warman (who is still there having started in about the mid 19th century), Reg Harcourt, Anne Diamond, and of course Shaw `keep 'em peeled` Taylor.
`We've got Amy Amy Turtle on the wing, on the wing. Amy, Amy Turtle ..........`

Those were the days! After seeing this I could't resist the chance of having another look at thie.

"What do we do with a drunken driver? What do we do with a drunken driver?" Fantastic.

It was probably about 200,000 (stand) admission prices. Tevez now earns about the same.
-
200,000 * £35 = £7m (or £35k p/w)
I'd say tevez 'earns' between 2-3x this.
Pedantic I know .....

Ah, great memories...
Alexis Korner (Bluesman, CCS front man and voiceover artiste extraordinare in the 70s, famous for the Kellogs Corn Flakes ads) on the Comfort ad
A Ford Capri for 3 grand !
I don't remember Mac Market
or Excel Hlidays....
Hugh Johns, now there's a voice !
Reggie Bosanquet, now there's a wig !
Great stuff
