I'm going with a draw, I just can't think beyond that, regardless of if we where playing Barca or Forest Green.

1-1

3-0 walk in the park for them. McLeish will state it is a "good result given The Mighty Red's stature" followed by "...sorry..I've just come."

cue Kleenex clean up.

They'll win easily, McLeish will tell us the game plan of staying in our own half worked superbly (other than their five goals), and Randy will make all the players sign a "thanks for having us" letter on Monday.

As long as we score, I'd just love to see one of our kids get a cracking goal at Old Trafford in front of 75,000.

We'll win 0-3.

Ashley to win a pen, converted by slap head and we'll have a player sent off. 2 more conceded in the 2nd half as Utd stroll round in 2nd gear.

The pressure's been on us lately and knowing that one more win should secure our safety, I'm sure we'll go out all guns blazing at a venue where we have nothing to lose. This fearless approach, coupled with the desire and effort of a team that needs a win will take United by surprise and we'll emerge with a heroic victory.

Sorry, I'm only pulling your leg... 3-0 home win.

3-0 to them.

They could probably score a whole hatful more but our 'football' seems to have a soporific effect on teams and they stop trying to score in about the 65th minute because they know there is no need.

A straightforward 2-0 win for Man Ure

We'll be lucky to have a shot on target but to be fair we get beat at Old Trafford year in year out  so another defeat nothing to be ashamed of

The granny shagger and Ashley Young to score for them

Yes, 2-0 at half-time then they will take their foot off the gas and leave it at that, perhaps getting another towards the end of the game if they can be bothered. I think they can actually win the league this weekend against us though it takes a series of rather unlikely results, the least unlikely of which is them beating us as you can imagine

Will we have a shot on target?

I'm thinking the usual 2 wide players deployed 100% as extra full backs to make a solid 6 at the back and utd to still do us 4-0.

I would love to be proved wrong but I see another damage limitation exercise from the defensive one

Title: Re: Newton Heath LYR FC v Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread
Post by: robbo1874 on April 10, 2012, 11:20:03 PM
I reckon we can scrape a draw. We'll need a bit of luck, which is usually in short supply for visiting teams there. But if we can stay in it, try and get at them and not let them play, we'll always have a chance. I know we got mullered at home by them this season, but as we're all but safe from relegation now, we'd be daft not to have a go.

I'd love to throw a spanner in their title works, the arrogant twats.

5-0 to them, with McLeish delighted to keep the loss to another elite team at less than double figures. He'll bemoan how close we were to beating them, in spite of only getting in their half once, and concede they have a different agenda to us.

Take the beating and move on to more winnable fixtures.

One thing I don't understand about modern football is why at Old Trafford they are allowed to have one of their outfield players wearing a different kit to the other ten.

Just spoke to a Man U fan, and he said as long as they get a draw against Villa and a draw against Everton before they meet City, that will be enough to win the title.

Surprised me...but maybe their priority is just not to lose, which should be enough to see them lift the title, again.

Ashley Young will score, and then solemnly not celebrate, which will lead to some people posting on that "will Young get booed" thread that he's a good egg, which will then get countered by others saying he shat on us by leaving, and within 24 hours of the match, the thread will have about five more pages in it.

The reality is that we have once up there in about 500 years  - but every time we went i always thought maybe we could catch them on an off day and we had a chance

never before have i genuinely thought that we had not a chance in hell - there was always hope

maybe just maybe it is one of those quirks of the season where United are so far in the driving seat with the title that a total shock could be on the cards - liek when Blackburn beat them etc

then i realised its us and  - nah

Perhaps as football likes to do on occasion, there might be a surprise thrown up. I suspect at some point the title race might have a twist or yet, and maybe we'll shock Utd, allowing City to chip away their lead a little.

Or maybe (probably...definitely) we'll get twatted.

Heart says Weimann will nick us a win.
Head says we'll get destroyed and Ash Young will grab a couple of goals to rub salt into the wounds.

Looking at Wigan, I wonder if a 3-5-2 formation might be good on a one off basis. Would allow us to play 3 in the middle and have men in the middle to defend. The main risk being their full backs catching us 2 against 1.

Given - Cuellar, Collins, Baker - Hutton, Herd, Gardner, Warnock - Ireland - Gabby, Weimann

If wigan can beat them, we can get a point there. I think the pressure is largely off us as I said before, we're all but safe from the drop now. Immense pressure on them after the defeat to wigan and city hammering the baggies. Not a bad time to be going there I reckon.

On a more positive note, an earlyish goal for us may just get the jitters going for them.

After last night I expect Sir Fergie will have had a few gentle words with his players and those same players will be upping their game somewhat for our visit. Unless we recall Peter McParland I cant see us scoring.

Its back to the walls gentleman with useless Agbonlahor  er....holding the ball up.

We're almost certainly going to get nothing from this game. If we stick Heskey in midfield and go ultra defensive, we'll get hammered.

We might as well give it a go. If we still get hammered, then so be it, but at least we'll have tried.

So I fully expect AM to go defensive and aim at keeping the score down.

Exactly - McLeish will be happy with a 2-0 and see it as a result, like Spurs away, Man City home - his thinking is shocking - we've lost before we start against these teams!

He will keep the score down because our GD is worth a point at this stage and he knows how important that could be. Yes it's negative but he's not going to change with 6 games to go.

The home games against Sunderland and Bolton will dictate our fate. At least two points from those and it should be ok, obviously a win from somewhere would be fantastic.

We'll score 0, have only 1 shot on target in 90mins, concede 3 or 4 goals (1 of which will be another set piece) and McLeish will say we did well.

I'd be inclined to pack the midfeld ..Scholes is bound to be back and as good as he still is if we get stuck in he can't dictate play.

They were unable to play through Wigan's 5 man midfield last night we should take note of that.

Can you see AM getting Villa to perform like Wigan did last night?  ::)

I suspect we'll pay a high price, as SAF will have given them the hair dryer treatment and we can't beat them under normal circumstances.

Going behind 2-0 after 15 minutes, then playing deep to defend that untill 89th minute, then going forward and get our second shot off-target, and they counter for 3-0. McLeish will post match say it was a close game, and we were always in it.

I've seen nothing in the last two games to suggest we'll not see 100% effort and a renewed sense of togetherness but we'lll come up short on quality especially as United will have been given a kicking after Wigan.

3-0 United, but we'll bounce back against Sunderland.

Although I think your probably right about the outcome, maybe just maybe Wigan have given us a window of opportunity, hopefully McLeish will study the Wigan game very hard, he will look at the system they played and the fact that Wigan never gave Man Utd a minutes rest, got after them relentlessly, so if Mcleish can play the same sort of game we may, with a huge amount of luck, pull of the same result or thereabouts.

Villa win. One nil after five minutes followed by eighty excruciating minutes of Roukes Drift defending, of giving the ball away and clearing our lines. This is followed by a   Gabby break away, a Jones tug (oooh matron) a penalty and yes, a red card. The upper tier of the north stand rocks like never before. Villa win and fuck off you red wankers.

Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish will check on the fitness of Chris Herd and Stephen Warnock ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash with leaders Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Herd suffered a head injury during Monday's 1-1 draw with Stoke while Warnock was substituted with an ankle problem. Charles N'Zogbia and Gary Gardner will be in contention to replace the duo if ruled out.

Midfielder Fabian Delph has returned to training after his ankle injury when on loan at Leeds while winger Marc Albrighton is battling to overcome a thigh problem

Having studied the opta stats and added in our record in Manchester, our record against teams in red and our record live on tele in recent seasons it's looking like an 11-0 defeat.

However, taking in other factors such as the added pressure United will be under following the Wigan defeat I'm going for 8-1. Our goal will come early at the Scoreboard End as De Gea panics thinking he's gone deaf in his left ear.

But there's hope - the last time I predicted such a pasting we went and won at Arsenal last season.

Just read on the guardian that:
- Man U have scored 3 in 6 of their last 8 home games against us. Pretty high chance of this happening again.
- And if we do lose, it'll be the lowest EVER premier league points total after 33 games.

I'm not clear whether Albrighton is fit. Baker has done well but Cuellar would have to replace him. Despite some being impressed, I don't think Lichaj looks good enough for this level, albeit he's a trier. So I'd bring Warnock back to left back and if not fit, Baker.

With Herd being out, I'd have thought Clark might come in, but perhaps it will be Gardner

In any event, I think we're going to get well and truly beaten, and just hope that we don't get any injuries, suspensions or confidence-battering.

I'm clinging on to the "surprise" element of football that makes it so attractive as a game but one, I'm sure, our manager would happily abolish.

Scholes will be back. He's been brilliant since he came back. Such a class act. I don't want to sound like one of our shite managers of current times and times gone (DOL, GH, AM) and start singing the praises of our opposition and their players and basically make excuses before the games kicked off because we're so much shitter than they are (Charlton! ha!) but Scholesy is quality and in all honesty, as much as anything I'm actually looking forward to watching him do his thing. There's few players in this league I'll happily just watch to see them do their thing, but the Ginger Ninja is one of them. He normally tears us a new one, so I expect no different.

However, I'm also hoping Ireland (if he plays) can impact the game and standout, because he's a cracking play when he wants to be.

Still, I expect us to get duly thumped.

From the Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/apr/13/paul-scholes-manchester-united-villa)

Ferguson confirmed his squad had suffered no fresh injuries for the encounter with Villa, another side managed by one of his former players, Alex McLeish.

The Villa fans have not exactly taken McLeish to their hearts due to his association with their bitter rivals Birmingham City. However, Ferguson is delighted with the manner McLeish has handled a tricky situation as he tries to reduce a massive wage bill.

"Alex had a rough first year at the club, not being able to buy players and selling a few," Ferguson said. "It makes it difficult if you get injuries and he has had a couple of bad ones in losing [Richard] Dunne and [Darren] Bent, whose goals were a big loss.

"He has a lot of criticism from the fan base at Villa Park but he has handled the whole pressure very well. He is a very capable manager and I hope everything is all right for him."

The main thing that let's us down (and it's apparent in some predictions here) when we play man utd is our mental weakness and daft sense of inferiority.  If (a huge "if" I know) McLeish can get us organized and positive, I am very sure we have the players to beat this bunch of overrated media tarts.  They've just lost to Wigan and, believe it or not, they have some pressure on them.  They are there to be taken.  Play at them, like various teams from Europe have done this season, and we can win.

The only thing that will save them under such circumstances will be a dodgy ref.

The main thing that let's us down (and it's apparent with some attitudes here) when we play man utd is our mental weakness and daft sense of inferiority.

My thoughts exactly, if you get after them and chase them down for every ball, Man Utd get all bitchy, they don't like it, they love and thrive on the fear factor, when teams don't respond that way what you see is a very ordinary team. Its when teams stand of them and let them play they look good, which lets face it, who wouldn't.

I think a real lesson in football was when Bilbao gave them a right seeing to, made them look very very ordinary.

No way we'll get anything out of this game. It's my daughter's christening so I am going to record it, drink heavily then watch the highlights and hopefully in my inebriated state things wont seem so bad..............

3-0 to Man Ure

Had the offer to watch it on ESPN at my daughter's house ,or I could walk the dogs for a couple of hours go home and nervously look at the result with a crazy hope that we've pulled off what could only be described as a miracle given our current form. Do you think I'll be dissapointed ?

"He has a lot of criticism from the fan base at Villa Park''

What a load of bollocks, he's had an exceptionally easy ride at Villa Park.

If and when McImbecile goes, Ferguson and the media will say he was 'persecuted' during his stay here.

Must admit, there hasn't been any poisonous stuff akin to what Houllier got against wolves last season. That was pretty hideous. The football has been just as shite though.

I couldn't give a monkeys he came from blues. Nearly (hopefully only nearly)  relegating the villa is shocking.

Ferguson is doing his usual patronising thing.

I put twenty quid on Blackburn beating Utd before Christmas. 25-1 before the match.
Villa should be 100-1. (Based on history and current level of shiteness)

It's on Sky, so I think ESPN is the best place to watch it.

Picking up dog turds in a plastic bag will be more fun.

My thoughts exactly, and who better to be playing than us and his good buddy McLeech who will no doubt claim that losing by six to the elite is a good result!

Thank heavens that QPR and Blackburn are both (currently) losing!

The Man City result puts a little bit more pressure on them.  The problem with that is they're well capable of handling it.  It might be interesting though if we manage to score one early on.

They'll win, it won't be a landslide but comfortable enough to cruise it. 2-0 or 3-1.

I don't even think they are that good this year...shame he won't have a right good go at them. May as well, it like a free game for us after today. Even a 5-0 twatting wouldn't hurt us too much in the GD dept compared to those below us.

One game nearer the end of the season anyway...

We can do this if we set about them Wigan style, providing we don't get in there with defeat stuck all over us we can get something, even a point is edging us ever closer to safety.

Gabby to get ours, not bothered about there's 1-1.

Side point, "We have a Star",  was in the Supermarket today, guy at the checkout looked a bit pissed of so I thought I would cheer him up, so I said "hows the Liverpool derby going" he said, don't know, last I heard Everton where 1-0, he then went on to say, can't stand Liverpool, anyway providing Spurs win that's all that matters, I said you a Spurs fan, yeah was the reply, I said you got some great talent in the likes of Bale and Co, asking me who I support, I said Villa fan, he winced and said your having a tough time, mind you if you go down can we have (his pronunciation) Agbongolor, great player he said, always scares the b*llox of me, I can think of a couple of Spurs players Arry would let go in part X he said.

I said, Gabby mate is a Villa boy.

I think its about time Wayne lost his rag again and get himself sent off    If that happens McDuff will flood the midfield play for a 0-0  and claim a moral victory if we hold them off.

Conversely Utd will go on the offensive  and hammer us 4-0.

Agbonlahor will... hold the ball up.

Think villadeph's team would struggle to get the ball back. Also think warnock is having a decent spell so would play him over Hutton. We've got to try and take the game to them wherever possible and ride our luck.  If we sit deep we will be embarrassed. There's a bit of pressure on them so maybe that'll help.  We absolutely must not concede an early goal.

Where is Enda Stephens? Can't we give him a run out? Probably at Bodymoor being prepared for next season?

After the Wigan defeat I hope we do not get treated as the sacrificial goat. We must take note of how the Wig's did it and use to our advantage! Injuries on our side do not fill me with any much more enthusiasm than I could muster before though. 1-0 to us is OK price with Wm Hill's. 11/1 to win.  uhhm? 50/1 score 0-2..may risk a quid!?
7/1 Man Utd 1-0
11/2 Man Utd 2-0
8/1 Man Utd 2-1
16/1 Draw 0-0
10/1 Draw 1-1
22/1 Draw 2-2
25/1 Aston Villa 1-0
50/1 Aston Villa 2-0
28/1 Aston Villa 2-1
