Could really do with a win for breathing space, but can't help feeling that McDicksplash will set us up for a draw.

Agree with Lee above

0-0.

If Stoke beat Wolves they are safe, in that case having reached Pulis's aim they may be beatable. If so we may get 3 points and 37 should be enough after the results today, but that is still no credit to the Eck person.

I'm going to be pretty outragous with a 3-2 Villa win.
They'll put us under pressure with long ball, long throws etc, so I can't see a clean sheet (Crouchy to grab their 2) We've our own long throw now so I think we can return the favour. Gabby, Lichaj and Albrighton

Law of averages, we are due another home win given our home record over the season. 1-0 or 2-1 to us and it will be nervy and certainly not pretty. God knows who will score for us, let's face it, it doesn't matter.

Think we'll struggle against their constant aerial bombardment. What will really put us under pressure is the way Jermaine Pennant touches the ball with his hand before he takes a corner/free kick. We'll get one from a Lichaj long throw and Tiny Penis will complain we play anti-football. Sadly 2-1 to them

Post by: paul_e on April 07, 2012, 07:44:27 PM
Think we'll struggle against them.  I just think they'll bully us and we'll be tired after today (Stoke are playing later so have less recovery time but they're all about big strong ox's that run all day so I think they'll be better prepared than us on that front).  I don't know if that will translate to a draw or a defeat though as we do seem a little more willing to fight it out than we had been.

I clicked a stoke win when I voted but I'm actually angling more towards a 1-1 draw, with us taking an early lead again (after 25-30mins) and then getting bullied for an hour before conceding late and then holding on.

I fear this could be a repeat of the Swansea game, a lot of the players were struggling physically at the end of the game so I really hope the likes of Cuellar and N'zogbia can play in this one to freshen things up a bit. Would start Weimann aswell.

1-1.

There's definitely a case for fresh legs after just one days rest. Stoke won't pass the ball around us like Swansea did but they could just overpower us. Any news on likely fitness of CNZ, albrighton, weimann?

I imagine bannan, herd might be tired? So:

Given - hutton, Collins, baker / cuellar, warnock - albrighton, Ireland, herd, CNZ - heskey, gabby

Bannan and gardner the alternatives to the two wingers I not fit. Interesting to see if carruthers gets more game time

I'd probably start with Heskey against Stoke, and N'Zog instead of Bannan if fit.Apart from that , probably the same starting line up.We have'nt really got anyone to play on the left.Maybe Albrighton, but Stoke probably is'nt the team to play him against.

Their LB is very poor though, so maybe put N'zog there, and GG on the right.

If I were a neutral, this would be a fixture so uninspiring I'd run a mile.  Voted draw but hopeful of a win.  Much will depend on how we defend corners,  if Collins & Baker can stand firm we shouldn't have a problem but if we do our usual chaotic marking routine we'll need a couple of goals to get something.

A thorn in our side, who have sadly started playing more open football whereas we have taken their defensive mantle.

Feel that the pressure will be off a little after the 'pool result and other results going our way, so would pluck for 2-1 (we can't keep a clean sheet). Whatever the score is though, it won't be pretty.

I'm not sure we'll get that many goals in all our remaining home games!

First of is Gabby playing, I thought he took a hell of a knock early in the first half yesterday, he was walking around very gingerly for a good few minutes afterwards and although for me he looked a bit listless for 20 or so mins in the second half which I thought was the knock he looked to run it of and came back into the game. Great performance from Gabby.

Stoke, I have always thought you never know what your going to get until they boot of, then you know.

1-1 and another hard earned point, that's based on Gabby playing.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Stoke City Pre-Match Thread
Post by: UK Redsox on April 08, 2012, 08:25:52 PM
Gabby should have been taken off after an hour on Saturday. He was really struggling to move as the game progressed due to the knock sustained earlier. However, since Weimann isn't fully fit either and our other star "striker" was already on the field as a midfielder, Gabby had to battle through.

Maybe, Andy could start against Stoke and then Gabby brought on if needed.

Given

Hutton
Baker
Collins
Lihaj

Warnock
Gardner
Herd
Ireland
Bannan

Weimann

Are Marc and Zog likely to be fit ?

From the desk of the camp one.

What a result for Aston Villa at Liverpool on Saturday but all that hard work will go to waste unless they secure three points against a Stoke side that has not won away from home for almost four months.

I was particularly impressed with the performances of James Collins and Shay Given at Anfield and that point will have given the dressing room a huge lift.

Villa's next game after this is Manchester United away - and they won't get anything from that.

That's why it is so important they overcome a Stoke side that huffed and puffed their way to victory over a doomed Wolves team on Saturday.

Villa's key to success in this fixture is overcoming the physical threat of their opponents - something I fully expect them to do.

Prediction: 2-1

3-0 Villa. For the first time this season pretty much, I am confident in us doing the job, Stoke have fitness issues with some of their players carrying knocks etc, and just think today is going to be our day.

Weimann, Gardner, NZogbia getting the goals, fitness permitting.

We do seem to be the catalyst for rejuvenating dormant opposition this season. Arsenal haven't stopped winning since the cup game, Torres did against us what he couldn't do for six months. I'm only surprised Carroll didn't get a brace on Saturday. I'm still expecting a win today though.

Need to get something from this, as we'll lose at Man Utd and we'll be being talked about as being in trouble again should we lose 2 on the bounce.

I reckon 1-1 with us looking the better side.

Need to score in the first in the first half it seems. Now we find out if McCleish has a spine.

Team he should play for height against stoke:

Given
Cueller Collins Baker Lichaj
Carruthers Herd Gardner Warnock
Wiemann Gabby

Subs Guzan Ireland N'Zogbia Bannan Heskey Johnson Williams

Hutton should be left out for all those penalties that should of been this season.

I rather accommodate Warnock in midfield that have him in defence

0-0.

I see us an an overweight Dad dragging himself towards the finishing line in the parents sports day race before finally flopping over the line, out of breath but just glad that it's over for another year and that there are other Dads, that are far fatter and who smoke a packet of ciggies a day.  Thank God for them.

But still, nagging in the back of his mind, he knows that next year he'll have to do it all again and there could yet be humiliation waiting.

-------------Given

Lichaj-Cuellar-Collins-Warnock

Carruthers-Herd-Ireland-N'Zogbia

---------Gabby

------------Weimann

This is what I would like, 4 changes which will keep us fresh. Injuries permitted, but if they are fit for the bench, they are fit to play in my opinion.

That, under the circumstances, is a dream team. I'm really excited about Carruthers.

agree with that team but I would be happy enough if Bannon starts instead of carruthers . But wouldnt it be refreshing and exciting to see that team.   I dont know If Hutton was still injured on saturday but I thought he was so lazy and looked awful.

I doubt Villa are likely to put us in a more relaxed mood for the remaining games by winning, we dont do things that way, the kids put in a big shift against Lpool and I dont think we will have the legs to grind it out against Stoke so another draw for me as we creep to the finish line.

Heskey must not start and we must concnetrate on trying to win the game above anything else. Chances are Stoke will score from a set-piece, so let's focus on scoring more than them (what a novel idea, being a football match!) and play an attacking team that wants to get forward.

We have the players to beat them with football, but I suspect we'll try and play them at their own game and be penned back more than we'd like. Still, both sides are blunt as a hunk of cheese, so 0-0 for me.

Agree with this. The only thing he really can do well is be the target man alongside another, quicker striker. If we have to play him, we should at least play him in a role that he can manage.

Given some of the other topics underway, today is yet another opportunity to build on a decent/good display or result. We need to go at Stoke from the off and not sit back and hope for a break. Stoke will do what they do so we will need to defend just like we did brilliantly at their place earlier in the season. Any victory will do, but I can't remember the last time we won at home with any style or in a manner that was convincing. It would be nice to see that today.

I'm going for a 3-1 win - Gabby, Bannan (pen), Ireland and Huth for them.

Good point, when I saw that tackle he made earlier in the game which was a full on 50/50 collision of leg and boot I winced, he must have some power in those legs because a lot of player would have been put straight out the game for weeks if not months, he did slow down later on and then seem to run it of towards the end so hopefully.
