I'm glad to see the orange dot!  Victory starts here.

I've just been reminded that the last time we won at liverpool we had a defence consisting of Beye, Carlos Cuellar, Nicky Shorey and Curtis Davies.  Surely we have a better back four this time around? There is no reason why we can't get out there and win.

The bench is -

Subs: Guzan, Johnson, Carruthers, Gardner, Weimann, Stevens, Williams.

What else could he have done? Weimann for Heskey is the only change I'd like and even Weimann has been injured midweek.

What team did you want him to play?? With the exception of maybe Gardner over Warnock, but at least its an experienced head in midfield... I understand the logic behind it
Title: Re: Liverpool v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: Monty on April 07, 2012, 02:13:27 PM
How Gardner must be feeling seeing Warnock ahead of him in midfield I don't know.

However, hopefully that's a 4-2-3-1, because the straightforward, rigid  4-4-2 of last week with Bannan and Gardner wide (this time you'd think it'd be Ireland) was a complete disaster.

Gut instinct says Hutton is right midfield on that team. I would like Warnock it if Warnock is in the middle of the park, but think it will be Hutton on the right. Why Albrighton can't do that I have not a clue after the way he changed the game last week. I have just been informed while typing however, that while I have not a clue, neither has McLeish.
Title: Re: Liverpool v Aston Villa Match Thread

We haven't kicked a ball yet, and we all accuse McLeish of giving up matches before he's even started. Let's at least wait until after kick off, eh?

Don't understand the team at all, who is playing where or do they just decide when they get on the pitch?
Title: Re: Liverpool v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: Chris Jameson on April 07, 2012, 02:14:26 PM
I don't care how many injuries there are, we could be down to the last 6 fit first team squad players, Emile Fucking Heskey shouldn't be anywhere near starting a football match for Aston Villa. I don't care if he's a nice bloke or that he scored a fairly decent goal against Portsmouth on his debut he is fucking useless.

Feel slightly better for that now.

Anyway, good feeling about this one. 3-1 to Villa with Heskey to bag a hat trick to answer his critics in the best possible way.
Title: Re: Liverpool v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: ozzjim on April 07, 2012, 02:15:32 PM
Edit above, Gardner should be starting over Heskey for me if Hutton is wide right. Ireland plays left and Gardner central getting forward. Albrighton must have a knock. Another one down!!!
Title: Re: Liverpool v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: Shrek on April 07, 2012, 02:16:29 PM
Gardner ahead of Warnock

Weimann ahead of Heskey

Don't give me bullshit about what else could he have done, he is a negative manager who breathes negativity into the players and fans just with his selections.

He tried this at spurs, it never worked, yet last week we showed guts and promise against a resurgent Chelsea. Today he has waved the white flag.

Why, make the mistake once is ok, make it twice is bad, 30 odd times and just hoping beyond any sense.
Title: Re: Liverpool v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: nodge on April 07, 2012, 02:17:12 PM
I suppose it depends how we line up but last week he played Gardner and Bannan out of position.  If you want them to become "men" at least give them a chance and play them where they've played since they were kids.

I'd have rather have seen Carruthers than Heskey to be honest, just to give their defence something to worry about. Let's just hope Heskey plays as a striker rather than just an extra man like he did against against Arsenal.

Warnock will play left mid and Bannan on the right. Lichaj at LB is just fine. He's played there for the US. It's all we have left as we literally down to the bare bones. It's going to be a long afternoon.

Players out makes miserable reading

Bent
Dunne
Petrov
N'Zogbia
Albrighton
Jenas
Cuellar
Delph
Weimman
Clark

Look Gabby is crap as a winger, Hutton is just crap, Heskey is even crapper.. Villa to WIN in Big Ecks world by losing 3 nil.  "we had more of the ball than them at  2 nil I thought I might change it at 87 minutes. i was worried about the young players because  Anfield is a formidable place to come and I remember when they beat Small Heath 7 nil a couple of years back." Alex McLeish sky sports 17.20...

It's got to be 4-4-2 for me. We need to get at them, they're shite at the back.

The team selection is about the best we've got. Warnock needed to be in midfield as we have little to no experience in there and we're gonna get caught at times.

It's not ideal and we'll probably still lose but little complaints from me.

I suppose it depends how he has deployed the players, Chipsticks. If it's Gardner, Bannan and Hutton all out of bleedin' position, then he deserves the criticism should we be duly tonked.

If they are organised more in keeping with, say, the positions they actually are used to, and we get duly tonked, then fair enough.

Of course, if we win....

Toronto you normally speak sense. its a sign of the mess were in when were still paying 50k a week for the privledge of him sat in a studio talking about The Yids. I  would make him travel to Anfield and watch the shit that will be served up today.. but then it is easter and he probably wants to eat chocalate with his feckin wag... or he is probably going to go shopping with Mr Bent because he has finished 'work' early.

I stated no more than the facts, and that it is very unfortunate that Jenas got injured. We signed an agreement for Jenas and we are bound by it. I'm sure the player is insured so that will likely account for some of the bill. The fact that he considers himself a Spurs player makes not one bit of difference to me because he is.

From BBC website:

Quote
9:32 Chris Herd provided the assist for the goal.

9:32 Goal scored
Goal - Chris Herd - Liverpool 0 - 1 A Villa
A goal is scored by Chris Herd from deep inside the penalty box to the top left corner of the goal. Liverpool 0-1 Aston Villa.

Quite impressive, assisting yourself like that.  Herd should play more often.

Remember when we beat Man U 3-0 at VP back in Sir Graham's day, and we started singing to Fergie, "thank you very much for Paul McGrath...thank you very much, thank you very, very much". that's why there's a defensive midfielder behind them.

With all due respect to the improving Herd, he isn't yet the finished article. Up until a few months back he was a full back. Add to that, there is very little pace in that midfield. Look at the good teams. They are both quick and strong. Our boys are improving but we need some experienced and true quality in there.

No, I agree. We'd need a real midfield general in there behind the two for the midfield to work well.

Neither Herd or Stan are strong enough, or fast enough to offer adequate defensive cover. Herd is getting better and better, but to rely on him this season would have been asking too much. And if you play both Stan and Herd then you are not only slow and flat footed, but limited going forward.

Do they really have to be quick and strong? Physical aspects in the midfield are massively over-valued in my opinion. I mean, Spurs midfield is the best in the league (probably), and not even Parker's that actually strong or quick - just very hard working. That aspect is much, much more important.

They both work hard and harry well which is exactly what you want from the more attacking pair in a 3.  A destroyer behind (but who can play a bit as well) is there to protect the back four and provide a bit of muscle if you're being bullied.  Herd does a decent job of that and should be given a run until the summer now to show he can at least be a rotation option in the role.

I'm too superstitious to watch a stream as we scored when I wasn't watching one. So no idea how we're playing.

Playing well PWS. Starting to give the ball away too much though for my liking as it is tempting the obvious. We need to get at Liverpool again.

Cheers TV, I hope we don't fall into our regular tactic of defending deeper and deeper and just inviting pressure.

Starting to get that way a bit, so we need to get to HT and regroup

Bolton losing. Dempsey which helps my dream team.

I put Dempsey as I captain today.

Dempsey has got me a shed load of points, but I have Cisse as captain this week, so his 2 goals yesterday will do.

Excellent move. I have him but obviously not as captain.

Dempsey just got a second!

Heskey off Gardner on, keep the ball in midfield. But God knows that won't happen, Eck often praises our 'last ditch defending', so he must be loving all of this.

We are doing Ok, Bannan and Ireland are doing a really solid job, we are the away team, Gabby and Heskey are pushing up all the time making sure Liverpool sit far deeper than they would want to being the home side, at one point I counted 7 in there own half and they where attacking, thought Gabby picked up a knock earlier on.

Doing Ok, lets hope that wasn't the obligatory 45.........

Started really well but seem to have gone back into our shell a bit.  We need to get the ball and keep it longer.   Ireland, Bannan and Warnock having good games in particular, but you get the feeling we'll need 2 to get a drawer.  When the (not so) divine ponytail comes on and we concede a corner I fear the worst.

This game sums up everything that is wrong with McLeish.  After 10minutes we were totally on top, they looked disorganised and their keeper was looking an absolute liability.  If we'd really gone at them we'd have stood a great chance of getting a big win.  Instead we've backed off further and further and let them have the ball pretty much uncontested until they get into our third.

It's this insistence on keeping 2 solid banks across the back and the midfield that totally destroys our attacking threat, it's infuriating.

I don't want to sound like an apologist for McLeish, but don't you think some of the way we play is down to the players we have out there? Young, inexperienced against some very experienced international footballers. It is somewhat inevitable that they are going to come at us, especially at home. It's not always McLeish.

I'd say Toronto's right though in this case. We have a very young inexperienced team playing, also players who have not played together like this as a unit. They have done very well but Liverpool have taken command, this is not down to AM.

No fair enough. He certainly hasn't done himself any favours at all with some of the tactics this season. I suppose today he has a legitimate reason. I do hope, like you, that he tells the team to attack them and push Liverpool back a bit. I said earlier that we won't survive 45 minutes getting sucked deeper and deeper.

We started well but can't keep the ball for more than a few passes now.

It's the best I've seen Bannan play in quite a while. Tidy in possession and disciplined without the ball. Collins has been excellent so far at the back. The other 3 are giving me the jitters. Hutton started terribly and doesnt look fit. Lichaj gave away a very naive freekick late on and really poor headed clearance for Kuyt's chance.

Only another 15 mins or so left in Heskey. Gardner to probably come on for him.

Worst Liverpool team in my living memory. Gerrard is a shadow of the player he once was.

Still be happy if we get anything out of this game though, but atm the choice of Heskey and Hutton look justified.

The system doesn't work for keeping possession, the keeper is under no instruction to do anything other than hoof it up to a big man, and perhaps the best player we have for keeping the ball is stuck wide. Also, these players are doing this well despite the system, why on earth weren't they playing earlier in the season?

I desperately hope we win today, but points we get really seem to me to be in spite of the manager not because him. I can assure you that thinking this gives me no joy, but that's the honest conclusion I've come to.

Me too. Given other results, a win probably would have seen us safe. Still, what, six points clear now?

Great result consdiering the onslaught in the last 10 mins and the other results ! Seriously saw them getting the winner so delighted with that as theyl had 20 shots at goal which really says it all really !

Best player for us I would say Baker stood strong in that second half as Ireland and Bannan faded ! Least we can watch Match of the Day without our heads in our hands !

UTV !!!!!!!

Well worth the 48 quid. A Villa team that can hold their head up with pride. Motivated to fight for the cause.

Don't we have to retain possession and create lots of chances for that to happen?
