Title: Display for Stan
Post by: dave.woodhall on March 30, 2012, 04:24:45 PM
Just spoke to a club official who is very keen on the idea of a card display for Stan at the Stoke game. Who would be up for distributing them before the match?

I think we should start a donation fund in Stan's name for the kids in the Brum going through the same thing. Chip in every weekend at VP, it would add up quick and I'm sure Stan would appreciate it.

I find the minutes applause a bit morbid, what about "theres only one stan petrov"?

I was thinking of something along those lines. On the 19th minute we all stand up and give a minutes applause.

Or we could do both? Not sure which people would think works better.

Much as I like the idea of the club display against Stoke, part of me thinks we should do something that's purely a fans reaction tomorrow.

All we can do tomorrow is to constanstly sing Stan's name to let him know he's in our thoughts.

Win,lose or draw, forget about McCleish and our shitty season for 90 minutes and think about our skipper.

When you get into the ground tell those around you and ask them to spread the word.

I'm Upper Trinity and usually surrounded by empty seats, it's not going to be the best place to try and spread the word.

I don't twitter, so no idea how it works etc. Don't you need followers to spread the word?

Brilliant idea. It would be great to have a full house and everyone as one standing up on the 19th minute. I bet even the Chelsea fans will join in.

Twitter and Facebook the obvious places to spread the word. A #petrov19applause hashtag? Not very snappy I know. Just hope the visitors don't have the temerity to score at that point.

I wouldn't worry too much about spreading the word PWS. I'm sure that if on 18 minutes the Holte End stands as one and start singing "Stand Up For Stan Petrov" the rest of the ground will get the message pretty quickly. ;) And then on 19 mins the applause can start.

Tomorrow is probably too soon but maybe we could do something to encourage people to join the bone marrow register (http://www.nhsbt.nhs.uk/bonemarrow/).  Hopefully Stan won't need this but even if it's not of direct help to him it could be a life saver for someone else's child or loved one.  It would be a really positive way of showing our support.

After a few minutes research I've found that the NHS work closely with the Anthony Nolan trust when it comes to bone marrow.  This is from their official site:

Quote
There are currently almost 1,600 people in the UK waiting for a stem cell transplant and 37,000 worldwide. We particularly need more young male donors come forward and join the register.
Men aged 18-30 are more likely to be chosen to donate but they currently account for just 12% of donors on the Anthony Nolan register.

I think we could be their target audience.  They have a page about organising recruitment events here (http://www.anthonynolan.org/What-you-can-do/Grow-the-register/Organise-a-recruitment-session.aspx).  I don't know if I could pull it off but I'd be up for trying to make this happen for the Stoke game if there's a chance it could be successful.  Would there be enough support for it?

Indeed. It would be great if other clubs could also get involved, especially considering the donor target group.

The first I knew about Stan's situation was the cameras showing stan in the stand and the whole stadium applauding.  It was surreal as I knew it must be serious.  Hat's off to everyone involved for such a touching and sincere moment.

Those are your beliefs but not everyone else's and organ donation should remain that, a donation.

Probably not the best idea to do it for this match anyway.

I'd imagine it'd be done in the Holte, and for this fixture there will doubtless be swathes of empty seats - wouldn't that make the card display impractical?

Was my concern. I think the only section of the ground guaranteed to be filled is the North Stand lower.

I think a display of Red/White and Green balloons (colours of Bulgaria's flag) could be done at another home game. If each person let off three balloons each as the teams come out it would look superb.

I remember we used to do the balloons thing superbly years ago, maybe it could be done again for Stan?
