The new domestic season starts on Thursday 5th April with the Pears in action against Notts. The Bears don't start their 1st class campaign until a week later against Somerset.
What are your hopes and expectations for the new season?
Personally I'd like to see the Bears challenge in the Championship and have a decent season in the one day format. We seem to be able to manage either or in a season but not both.
Woakes misses the start of the season and will be missed but otherwise we have a reasonable squad capable of challenging for honours.
-
I think Warwick overachieved in the Championship last year. I think we'll finish around mid table this year.
More than capable of putting good runs together in the one day stuff.
-
Mid to upper positions in both formats for the Bears and may I be the first to say...
Come on you Bears!!
-
Would be happy with Pears staying in Div 1 again - would like a decent one day season and an appearance on 20/20 finals day is looooong overdue. GO PEARS!
-
With Woakes out for at least 6 weeks we need Barker to step up..........U Bears
-
Yeah, mid-table I reckon. YOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUU BEEEEEEAAAARRRRRRRSSSSS
-
Mid table also for me.
-
4th in the CC in reckon.
Garbage in the Pro40 and T20.
Come on you Bears!
-
Boyd Rankin now out for six weeks, but on the bright side Woakes reckons he'll return by the end of April, so not as bad as first feared.
Mid-table in the championship, mid-table in the Pro40, losing Twenty20 Quarter-Finallists, I reckon.
-
If Rankin could steer clear of injuries then a decent season could see him towards the England squad. He seems injury prone so it's unlikely to happen.
-
You Bears! Looking for a consistent season.
-
Alan Richardson rewarded for 70 odd Div 1 wickets last year with a place in the Wisden cricketers of the year list.
Great reward for an old pro who gets better as he gets older.
Suspect we'll need more of the same this year to stand a chance of staying up. Go Pears!

Marston are giving away 500 free tickets per day for the Bears vs Pears Twenty20on Friday June 16th. Two tickets per person.
The game is live on Sky.
I think they are doing this as England play Sweden in the Euro Championship. They state the game will be on the big screen at 8pm (though I thought the match was at 6pm).
£1.50 per ticket booking fee.

Cheers. Tickets booked. BBC Sport website are showing the kick off as 7.45pm so a drunken time will be had by all!
-
I'll thank DBTW for that one.
-
Nearly time for the season opener.
Didn't Somerset early last season? I seem to remember they were one of the favourites and we gave them a tanking.
-
Considering I didn't think our bowling would be great, excellent start.
Somerset are 14/2
-
Somerset now 46/5!!!
Hopefully it is a splendid batting pitch ???
-
Somerset 147 all out. Please don't let it be the pitch, must be class bowling by the Bears surely?
-
I think the overhead conditions mean it is swinging around a bit.
-
I think the overhead conditions mean it is swinging around a bit.
I was surprised that Somerset chose to bat first. Looked very cloudy outside.
-
Maximum bowling points for the Bears?
-
Maximum bowling points for the Bears?
Yep - I think if you get 9 wickets in the first 110 overs then you get all 3 bowling points, unless they've changed the points system. Then in the same amount of overs the batting points go 200 - 1pt/ 250 - 2pts and so on with 400+ being all 5 batting points.
-
Bears are 164/5. Could be finished by tomorrow afternoon.
-
Bit of a collapse and they are building a foundation, You Bears!!!
-
Zummerzet 4 down at the close, effectively 31-4. Not too bad by the Bears so far but too many batting failures again. let's hope it's an early season thing rather than a sign of things to come.

Here here
-
well we have Belly back for a few games
-
The Bears batting has been poor for 3/4 seasons and it cost us the Championship last year, I am very dissapointed that Giles/Povey havnt sorted it by a) going in for James Taylor or b) getting in a top quality test player

Test players aren't available for an entire season like they once were. Top English players are subject to central contracts which restrict them to a handul of appearances a season at best. If Taylor has a good season at Notts he could end up on an interim central contract. I really don't see the point of signing future test players who rarely play for you.
Quality overseas players are more likely to be playing in various T20 competitions around the world or indeed playing for their own country. You can hypothetically get a player for a month or two like we did with Shiv Chanderpaul but to say that our batsmen cost us the title is wide of the mark.
In 2011 we got more batting points than bowling points and only Durham who finished 3rd got more batting points than we did and that was just one point. What cost us was not a 9 point pitch deduction but an inability to bowl out Hants on a flat, lifeless end of season pitch at the Rose Bowl.

Well we will see what happens we will be ok for the 1st month or so when Bell/Trott are in the team
-
Struggling today though.
-
259 to win by my calculations. COYB.
-
Two wickets down though. Although one of them was Carter opening the innings? Pinch hitting in a four-day game?
-
I think Carter has done that before for us (?).
Come on you Bears, an early season win would be just the ticket.
-
Good stand by Westwood and Porterfield to give us a good cahnce.
Carter regularly opens in one-dayers but I can't remember him doing it in a four-dayer.
-
Let's finish them off tomorrow Bears!
-
Doing our best to fuck this up.
-
Pathetic batting collapse as usual.
-
A good win in the end.
Great innings by Patel to finish it off.
-
Never in doubt. Yoooooouuuuu Beeseeeaaaarrrrsssss!
-
Last over: 6 4 4 1 4
-
Good start! Well done Bears.
On a side note, I know Carts has opened in T20 and Pro40 stuff, but I definitely think he has opened in CC cricket; again a run chase with him at 1 or 2. I will try and find out...
-
Well done Warwick
-
Thought we'd chucked it away... always good to start the season with a win.
-

He may have done, but this wasn't a run chase against the clock, we had a day and a half to get 250 odd, seemed strange to open with Carter.
Hey ho, we won, so who cares!

He has definitely opened on a few occasions over the past few years. I haven't been a member for about 4/5 years now, but remember him being slotted in on more than one occasion at the top of the order.
I think the idea is to "lengthen the batting order", stick him in at the top with carte blanche to have a dig in the hope that he gets a quick 30/40 to bring the target down. You then have all the specialist batters one place lower than normal, thus giving the impression of a long batting line up.
I guess he got a few, so it worked in a way, but then again it didn't because we had to rely on Jeetan to knock off a quick 40 odd to win.
Good start though and never can complain at beating Zummerset.
-
Oh right! Obviously I'm not a member but I do go to a few days out for Championship games every season, never seen him open before. Must take more notice!
-
Lancs 150 for 5 versus the Bears, not a bad day 1
-

Not bad at all particularly as we're still missing Rankin and Woakes.

Indeed.
Chris Wright seems a great signing, did bugger all at Essex but has been great since coming to us on loan and now permanently.
-
Lancs 250 ao, but Warwick currently 14 for 2
-
Hurrayboo.
-
oh dear 68 for 5 at stumps
-
Oh dear indeed. Still, it's April. In Lancashire. We'll get a rainy draw.
-
An excellent day for the Bears.
Lancs are 44/4 in their second innings and still trailing by 35 runs.
-
81 - 7 to 329 all out is a fantastic recovery. Great stand by Maddy & Clarke.
If the weather is kind to us we could win this.

Not looking the best. http://uk.weather.com/weather/tomorrow-Southport-UKXX0139
-
Great stuff Bears, finish them off tomorrow!
-
Looks like a draw is going to be the result unless we can finish them off quickly.
-
9 down now, 60 odd ahead.
Loads of overs to go, only the weather can deny us you would think.
Take the last wicket and then send Carts in to smash it around
You Bears !!!
-
Lancs all out, Bears need 70. Listening to the on-line commentary who are saying that the weather is reasonable.
-
We made hard work of it but we won by 5 wickets. Great start to the season for the Bears with our best bowlers out injured.
-
Well done the Bears!
-
Well done Bears! ;D
-
Two games against decent opposition and two wins.
-
Great stuff from the Bears.
Special mention for Clarke and Maddy, whose partnership changed he game.

I'm getting more sporting pleasure from the Bears than I am the Villa at the moment!
-
Trott & Bell in the Bears team at Sussex, let's hope the rain stays away and we get a meaningful game
-
Bell out for a duck, he is woefully off form at the moment.
Trott currently going well though.
46-2
-
Trott century, Chopra keeping him company admirably.
196-2
-
Nice foundation to build on, COYB
-
Chopra out for 105, Trott still there, 257-4
-
Not bad considering we lost the toss.
-
150 up for Trotty.
330-6
-
350 and 4 batting points up with 4 overs to spare. It apears that you now only get 3 points for a draw which seems a bit unfair.
-
I don't know, it should see more teams going for the win rather than being happy to just play out for a draw. Might see more of those mad 'contrived' innings where the bowling side lob up a load of half-volleys so the batting side can get 300-3 in 30 overs to set a fair run chase as well.
-
Good day today, well done Warwick
-
I just don't get how the Bears keep on doing it. I had us down or relegation certainties last year and though that our inishing position may have been a flash in the pan by we seem to be doing I again this year even without our two most potent bowlers.
We always seem to be deep in the mire in games but 1 or 2 batsmen, different each time, seem to pull us through. All credit to Ashley Giles for the ethos he seems to have installed in our players.
I was also unaware that Keith Barker is an ex professional footballer. It's good to see a cricketer of Afro Carribean descent coming to the fore again.
-
Go away rain!
-
I was thinking the other day that they actually remind me a lot of the great side of the 90s.
If we could add a top class batsman and an inspirational leader we could win everything.

New Road at risk of flooding again:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/17894700
I hope they don't suffer as in previous years. It's a lovely ground and a good placce to watch cricket. Another flood like 2007 could have serious financial reprecussions for them.

The cost would be prohibitive and it would be a sad day when one of the finest grounds in England was no more.

Fair point but then again it doesn't flood every year
-
Azmal Shazad released by Yorkshire, he would be a useful addition to the Bears
-
Yep, I'd get him in. Surprising he's gone from England prospect to scrapheap so quickly though.
-
Yep, I'd get him in. Surprising he's gone from England prospect to scrapheap so quickly though.
Not sure that we need him, we're pretty well covered in the bowling department with Rankin and Woakes still to play this season. His fall from grace smacks of a poor attitude too. If we do sign someone then I'd rather see additional batting resource brought in.
The Championship game against Durham has started well - Durham 129 - 8 in their first innings.
-
Good day for Warwick but 15 wickets on the first day, the pitch must be a bit ropey!
-
Bell out for a much needed 120.
75 run lead, could be useful on a dodgy pitch.
-
Durham - in theory 20 for 6 at tea in the second innings, finish them off now Bears
-
Nine down now, should finish this tonight.
-
Barker is in the form of his life.
it will be nice to beat Durham. They have generally slaughtered us over the last few seasons.
-
Won by 9 wickets inside 3 days with most of day 2 lost to the weather. Another top performance particularly by the bowlers.
-
Two 5-fers for Keith Barker, wonder if the England selectors are taking notice? Did you know his God-father is Clive Lloyd?

A crackin' win. Well done Bears.
I've always rated Barker ::) (please don't check last years Bears thread)

In a similar vein, I thought the choice of Graeme Welch as bowling coach was particularly uninspiring. Give him his due the bowling attack has been pretty damned good so far.
You Bears!
-
3 out of 4 for the Bears!
-
Good report on Cricinfo:
http://www.espncricinfo.com/county-cricket-2012/content/story/563708.html
Some valid points, we certainly need the batsmen to step up to the plate now. Pity Shiv Chanderpaul is busy this summer, perhaps we should offer Punter Ponting a short-term contract.
-
Fantastic by the Bears. I know it's too early to start to get excited about a possible title run but...
-
Great win today. Well done you bears.
-
They could teach our football team a thing or two; only 20% of games drawn so far.
-
Bears are flying.Trott and Bell may not play again so i throw caution to the wind.

Or Rankin, who'll be crucial if the pitches get a little flatter.

I'd love Punter to roll up for the last 4 or 5 CC games.

And a win in the 40 over stuff against Northants today. Bell once again on form.
Starting to look like a good season.

I think Bell was picked for the Lions due to an injury bigad.

Good win for the Bears today 9 wickets over Derbyshire. Nice to see Woakes back in the side.
-
Well done Warwick, keep the momentum going.
-
Another good foundation for the Bears to build on, 400+ would be good for me.
-
Woo Hoo - think I may have gotten a free ticket to the 20/20 between the Bear and the Pears on 15th June from work. :)
Pity I can only get 1 ticket though, shouldn't complain I guess.

Good stuff - hope none of those Pear-types turn up though.... (waiting for Dave Woodhall to bite).
-
523 for 6, great stuff just after tea.

Bears declared on 557 - 6 and Lancs have already lost 2 wickets in their reply.

Very nice work Bears!

Hopefully the weather will be OK for tomorrow. CoyB!

122/3 at stumps. Seven wickets to go. Should be fine if it doesn't rain. COYB.

Lancs batted much better and deserved the draw.
Anyway, another good bowling day for the Bears, Surrey all out for 223 before tea.
-
Surrey 223; Warwickshire 23/1 - Not at bad start at all.
-
Another good day for the Bears. This is becoming a habit!
-
Bears set 222 to win, which could go either way. Don't think it'll be a draw anyway.

It's a recovery of sorts but we really can't afford to lose many more wickets.
-
Another win in sight ! Only issue for me is the weakness in the top order batting - Westwood as per usual and Troughton who if he was not a decent skipper would not be playing - have we got any up and coming batsmen ?
-
How is the weather looking for tomorrow darn sarf?
-
Good enough for us to win with 5 wickets to spare - YOU BEEEEEEEAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!

Another win for the Bears, great stuff!
-
...and yet another win, this time in the 40-overs! Top of two leagues, really fancy some silverware this year.
-
Keep it up Warwick
-
Back to second in the Championship after Notts beat Sussex.
A point behind with a game in hand, whatever happens in our game in hand we should be back on top very soon.
The 2 games against Notts in August and September could well decide the title.
-
For those with Sky, the Bears' 40 over game at Kent is being televised today. Starts at 4.40.
-
Kent game was a disaster, but it did show Duckworth/Lewis up as a bit of a farce, Kent's target was laughable, no chance that The Bears could defend that. D/L is prone to problems when early wickets are taken, it's too biased towards the bowling team and takes little notice of the fact that most teams bat well down the order these days. Be interested to see the proposal that India are coming up with as a possible replacement. We would probably have lost anyway, but it made the game a non-event.
Anyway, doing better today, 242/6 and have Derby down to 35/4 already.
-
Another win for Warwick!
-
Well done the Bears to get Durham to 277 all out.
-
Hadn't realised... Warwickshire's match at Glamorgan is on telly (in Welsh). Sky channel 134.
Currently rain stopped play but I think they're optimistic it could restart before too long.
-
...scratch that, it's pissing down.
Don't like the look of this cos even if they do get back on shortened matches always favour the side batting second. We're batting first. 90/2 off 12.
-
Duckworth Lewis doesn't work for T20, it doesn't take into account the fact that even a lower order batsman can smack a quick 20 off an over, which is fine in a 40 or 50 over match and can be factored into the equations, but in T20 it wins a match.
-
We are concentrating on the league
-
Is that Warwick's first win in the 20/20?
-
Bears hammering the Pears. Good stuff.
-

-
Pears back on the bus today....still clinging to hope of first finals day appearance....no more performances like last night though :-)
-
anyone else's kids playing in the worcestershire premier league?
i am on my way down to Swindon cc's ground as a pitch inspection needs to be done by 8 am. this bloody weather is pissing me off as cannot plan weekends or any games and ruining my nights sleep listening to the rain beating down!
-
Just a word about the Pears, although I realise that we don't have much support among H&V members. We've just had a couple of good wins, including beating the table leaders by 54 runs today, and are just 1 point behind the Bears with 2 games in hand. We have a young leg-break bowler, a 3rd generation D'Oliveira, who took 3 wickets today. Like Villa, we're a team of few stars but with several promising youngsters who may or may not make it at the top level.
-
Bless.
-
Weather permitting, I should be at the T20 tomorrow after work at Edgbaston.
-

Have you seen the forecast for tomorrow? Unless they are playing it in the indoor school we have got no chance.
-
Weather permitting, I should be at the T20 tomorrow after work at Edgbaston.
Thought about it.
Then looked at the forecast and decided to plan a few pints nearer home instead.
Might still head over if the expected "months rain in a day" was grossly exaggerated by the weathergirls.
-
Bright sunshine so far ::)

While they're having a rain break in the tennis, I'll give a summary of the games on the last day of the Twenty20 Group Stage.
The top two in each group go through to the quarter-finals, along with the two best third-placed teams.
The group winners along with the best runner-up get a home quarter-final.
Bears started the day third in their group, level with Worcs and Somerset but with an inferior Net Run Rate, and one point clear of fourth-placed Gloucs.
A win will definitely be enough to progress. A tie could still see them eliminated while they could, technically, go through with a defeat.
Bears are currently 6/0 off 1.1 after we let Glamorgan get more than they should have done, 173/5.
Northants-Gloucs currently rain-delayed. Best hope it keeps raining as Northants are struggling on 31/4 off 8.3. If Gloucs win, we need to win too to go through.
Worcs made 119/7, Somerset currently 29/0 off 3.2.
If Bears lose and Gloucs don't win, third place could be enough for the Bears so long as Durham don't hammer Lancs. Lancs made 133/8, Durham currently 17/0 off 2.5.
-
61/4 not looking good.
-
Rain stopped play. As it stands we'll lose on D/L and Gloucs will get a No Result. Will all come down to Net Run/Rate and I'm not sure who goes through.
-
Bears lost on D/L. Even in the unlikely event that play resumes in Northampton and Gloucestershire somehow contrive to lose. This is because we have ended up with a worse Net Run Rate than the other two third place finishers, Essex and Durham.
I reckon we've been pretty unluckly considering we have lost so many matches to the rain.
Oh well, just have to settle for the double then.
Worcestershire have lost but they'll sneak through.
-
According to WM our NRR ha fallen behind Gloucs today so we are out
-
I know. Just amended my post!
-
I may have miscalculated though! We're actually one point better off than Durham so we would go through if Gloucestershire somehow manage to lose... it has to stop raining first though.
-
0.333 to -0.333.
-
Play in Northampton due to resume at 6.06. Can't see anyway Northants can win though.
-
Gloucestershire have been set a piss-easy target of 23 to win off 5 overs. They are 0/1 though, but we still need a miracle.

That is taking the piss.
-
9/1 off 1 over.
Come on Northants, quick double hat-trick and you've got a chance...
-
22-2 forget it.
-
Unsurprisingly, Gloucestershire win. We're out.
I'd like to make it clear, at this point, that Northamptonshire are a big bunch of smelly bumflaps and I hope they all fall over and get nasty bruises on their knees.
Feel better now.

Duckworth Lewis is not suited to T20

It's not suited to cricket.

What a lad of bitter one eyed rubbish on this thread. Glos held N'hants to 31-4 off 8 Overs and scored 23 off 2 overs. Nothing to do with duckworth Lewis we'd have got 32 off 8 easily at that rate if required.
If you want to moan about unfairness in cricket how about the counties with test cricket getting massive cash boosts ever year compared to those that don't get awarded England games. Glos have very low budget and have managed to qualify out of the group of much better funded counties. It's the equivalent of a minnows cup upset in football.
-
Easier to run a 'small county' at the moment.
Warwickshire owe 30 million at the moment,so you are talking bollocks like you normally do.
-
Come on you Pears!
Thwarted twice by the weather to go to the Twenty20. First Bears vs Pears, then whoever Bears were playing on Friday
#greatBritishweather!
-
I bet Warwickshire have a bigger payroll than Glos. whether they are in debt or not you miss my point, teams with bigger budgets should beat those with smaller budgets. It might be easier to run a small team than a big one but the big one should be more successful.
Was my statement regarding D/L "bollocks"? Otherwise I can't see what was "bollocks" in my post(s).

How many players have Glos lost to England lately?
-
None, we don't have the income to attract the best players (who are then, as luck would have it awarded central contracts). Phew the penny's dropped at last.

In all fairness, this years T20 has been ruined by the weather..Out of the 10 games Bears had, they only had 5 'proper' games, of which they won 4 and lost 1, of the remaining 5, 3 were lost to the weather, and 2 were lost ob D/L. other counties also had problems, so it makes it even more of a lottery, its the eqivilent to games in football been abandoned then decided by a pen shootout!!
Hopefully in the proper cricket ie championship, the best team (bears) will come out on top!!
-
Getting sick of this weather. I see there wasn't a fucking drop in London where Middlesex are surrendering to Nottinghamshire and bollocks up our title campaign. Middlesex isn't even a county, kick em out!
-
All I have to say on the matter is we are going to Sussex, we are going to Sussex, you're not.
-
Say hello to Frank while you're there.

By the way, you going Burton?

That was aimed at cheltenhamlion, not myself, by the way... in case anyone thinks I've finally lost the last of my marbles.

The lads birthday so no Burton for me. Enjoy your day.

Weather permitting, do you reckon the Bears could manufacture a win?

Great stuff today by the Bears. There was never any chance of a result, but we managed 400 runs and 9 (so far) wickets to get maximum bonus points and go one point clear of Notts at the top, still with a game in hand.
WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE I SAID WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE!

I'm not sure. A good county pro but he'll be 35 at the start of next season and is very injury prone.

He'd be good for a season or two.

He'd be good for a season or two.
I'd have a look at Garry Park who has been released by Derbyshire. Decent one day batsman and good in the field.
-
Notts 118/5 at lunch 8)
-
Warwick 27 for 1 at Stumps, I guess there was a bit of rain around?
-
It seems that wherever we play, the weather's always worse than wherever Nottinghamshire are playing.
-
Good day for the Bears.
-
Aye. Thwack it to get the 5th batting point, then declare I reckon. Stay raining in Nottingham please.
-
No, don't declare. Only 3 wickets left so get as many runs as possible and then get the 20 wickets. I wouldn't want us to be batting by lunch mind. give it an hour or so.
-
Disagree. We need twenty wickets and it's bound to rain at some point plus (ludicrously) you can't make up time lost on Day Four. Gotta be bold to win Championships. Get 13 runs, declare, take twenty wickets, collect maximum points, go to pub. Hurrah!
-
It's supposed to rain for a lot of the day in Taunton today, so I think get to 400 and declare. Hopefully cloudy/damp conditions could help us take some quick wickets and there could be a game on. If pretty much a whole day is rained off, at least we might manage to get some bowling points.
-
Full batting points with an over to spare.
9 Down - may as well declare.
-
Solanki leaving Worcestershire for Surrey next year....fair play to him getting a good 2 year contract at 36, still a cracking player on his day. Suspect its a mutely good decision as we need to rebuild the batting line up and Vik would no doubt of been a top earner so the budget is freed up for next year.
Hoping we can wrap up the last 4 Lanc's wickets now to drag them and Surrey in to the relegation battle!
-
Lancs all out for 63 against the Pears, giving them a victory by 205 runs. 6 more wickets for Moeen Ali, making it 12 in the match. Remarkable stuff.
-
Well done u Pears.........
Somerset 254 a/o Patel takes 7
Bears lead by 154
and still no play @ Trent Bridge
-
Warwickshire 400 and 66/3; Somerset 254
Stumps - Warwickshire lead by 212 runs with 7 wickets remaining
Got a chance for a win tomorrow

We don't win many! Our last win, last September, was also against Lancs and just as remarkable as this. And we're out of the relegation places.
-
Warks snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, currently 87 for 8.
-
We're still favourites I reckon. 124 all out... Zomerzet need 271 to win. On a fading pitch, that we could only score 124 on, they shouldn't get that. Hopefully we can take ten wickets in just over two sessions. Elsewhere, Notts are going irritatingly well at 260/6, on course for maximum bonus points if they keep up current run rate. If they do get much more than 300 though it more or less rules out them contriving a result with Surrey.
-
Patel will rip through them again. Two sessions plus 30 minutes to take 10 wickets. These are days when champions are created.
You Bears!

-
Zomerzet now 37 for 3, Villa fan Kieswetter and That Bastard Compton holding us up a bit. Notts crumbled to 328 all out so have to settle for 3 batting points.
-
It's all gone a bit wrong for Bears. Zomerzet now 112 for 3. If we don't break this partership soon, they might even be able to have a bit of a slog and come close to beating us. Piss off Compton and Kieswetter, pair of spoilsports.
-
Looks like the Bears will lose this one...... Somerset need 35 with 6 wickets in hand and about 45 minutes play left.
-
5 down now COYB
-
It'll take something miraculous from here!

Taking my son to Headingley tomorrow to the 20/20 shenanigans. Only ever been to one hit and run before and said I wouldn't bother again but Billy asked if we could go. I'll make sure I remind him it's not proper cricket.
Having said that i'd still like to see Yorkshire crush the opponents who i've just discovered are Worcestershire.

Amazing exhibition of clinical T20 hitting by Scott Styris for Sussex against Gloucester last night, 100 off 37 balls including 38 off one over - including 2 free hits and a dot ball. It went like this (copy & paste from Cricinfo commentary):
17.1 Fuller to Styris, 6 no balls
17.1 Fuller to Styris, (no ball) FOUR
17.1 Fuller to Styris, SIX
17.2 Fuller to Styris, SIX
17.3 Fuller to Styris, FOUR
17.4 Fuller to Styris, no run
17.5 Fuller to Styris, FOUR
17.6 Fuller to Styris, SIX
It wasn't slogging, it was timing and a fair amount of power. Great to watch.
-
I watched the Styris explosion as well (although Prior had already softened up the Glos pace bowlers in the opening overs).
Glos actually gave a pretty good account of themselves in the chase but they had no chance really.

If you consider that the winning margin was 39 runs, the difference between the two sides was that one over. Gloucester did well to get as close as they did. 191 in T20 would win most games.

17.4 Fuller to Styris, no run

Think I was finally won over tonight, really enjoyed the game at Headingley, Yorkshire batted superbly and they were far better than Worcester when it came to fielding, the catch that Joe Root engineered on the boundary was a stunning piece of cricket. My son loved every minute of it and i'm reliably informed he and his mate were on tv a few times giving it the full 'Yorkshire,Yorkshire' chant.
-
i am off with my son to new road today, gonna have a look at steyn and the rest of the southafrica boys. worcs got 9 wickets yesterday showing england how to do it!
-
Bears pummelling Surrey at the moment. We're currently 505 for 8: Woakes into the 90s, Patel nearing 50. Jim Troughton got his second ton in as many games yesterday. Great stuff.
-
Just started the final session at Edgbaston with the Bears needing 7 wickets to win. A draw is on the cards here and it's looks like Notts will draw against Sussex too.
Although things are tight at the top of the table, there's a very real chance that the title will be decided by the two games between the Bears and Notts. The first game is at Edgbaston at the end of August with the return game at Trent Bridge in September. It's the last game of the season and may well be a title decider.
COME ON YOU BEARS!

The Bears v The Soggy Pears on Five Live Sports Extra.

Worcestershire 214/5

Pears 246 all out, quite a collapse from 194-4. The Bears are 4-2........

17 for 3 at Stumps, what happened at the end... did they get Glenn McGrath out of retirement?

Jeetan Patel has been recalled to the NZ side so will miss a few Bears games. Looks like they will get a short term replacement in, it will be interesting to see who.
Shiv Chanderpaul almost won us the league last season so an International class batsman would be a good shout. Trouble is, how do you replace Jeet's wickets? The bowling attack is weakened by his absence.

Bears all out for 132; Pears 24-3.

That's good news. By my reckoning something like 26 wickets have gone down in just over 4 sessions. The Bears need 260 to win. We need some application here lads!

Bears finished on 79/0 so need another 181 to win
Crucial day 2moro this could decide the title as Notts are behind v Somerset

Taken from Crickinfo...........
Warwickshire are exploring the loan market in an attempt to secure their first Championship title since 2004. The current leaders require a replacement for their spinner, New Zealand's Jeetan Patel, who is about to depart on Test duty and are looking at several options - including Durham's Ian Blackwell and Lancashire's Gary Keedy - as short-term solutions.
While Ashley Giles, Warwickshire's director of cricket, expects Patel back for the final game of the season (against the second-placed team Nottinghamshire) and maintain outside hopes of welcoming him back for the game before that, against Worcestershire, they are reluctant to go into their matches against Middlesex and Nottinghamshire without an experienced spin bowler.
Chris Metters, their left-arm spinner, is out for the season though injury while spin-bowling allrounder Paul Best, with just nine first-class games behind him, is deemed too green for such a demanding task. The overseas market has now become so bureaucratic that it takes a minimum of three weeks to bring in a new player.
There are several loan possibilities. The most intriguing is the former England allrounder Blackwell who cannot currently squeeze into the Durham squad. Blackwell is not really Giles' type of player - Blackwell's dislike for training and fitness are something of a throwback to a different age - but, aged 34, he remains a fine cricketer who took career-best bowling figures of 7 for 52 in his last first-class game, against Australia A. He has also scored over 11,000 first-class runs at an average only a fraction under 40.
The Lancashire pair of Keedy and Stephen Parry are also of interest. Giles has long been a fan of Keedy - Warwickshire offered him a three-year contract at the end of last year - but he might well be required by Lancashire. It is possible, however, that in seeking to help Warwickshire defeat Lancashire's relegation rivals, Lancashire's cause might be well-served by allowing Keedy to go for a spell at Edgbaston. Parry has played only three first-class games and none since 2009 and is a less likely option
Out of those mentioned I reckon Keedy would be the best option..............
-
Great result from the Bears. The remaining games for the Bears will be crucial:
Middlesex (h), Worcestershire (a) and Notts (h/a)
It will be an interesting end to the season. I'm not convicned that we're going to do it, but at least we halted a winless run today. The Notts games will be crucial.
-
Nice win, let us hope we win two of the last four and hopefully draw the other two.

Things progressing well in the Bears favour at Trent Bridge. Notts are playing Durham and are 51-5 in their first innings chasing Durham's 194 all out. Could do with a draw or an unlikely Durham victory in that one.
-
Last nights result was an embarrassment for the captain and our 'coach'. A total of 200 should have been one which WCCC should have been easy enough to chase down if as a team take the task on properly. It was plainly evident that, with the early exception of Chris Wight's early burst(3 wkts) that with pace off the ball run getting was not an easy task. Then when we were set a moderate target we allowed Michael Yardy to dominate our run chase that i think after the initial 'Power Play' we had reached approx 23 already behind the required rate but with a whole army of bowlers still to bowl who were never going to get thrashed around the park. The 'quicker' bowlers Liddle and Khan only went for 81 from their 16 overs only a fraction (1 run) above the required RR of 5 per over. Then with Beer and Yardy only going for 50 from their 16 overs we were never gonna win. We should have at least tried to dominate from the outset in the run chase and tried at least to keep pace with the rate.
It was so disappointing....i was looking forward to a day at Lords on 15th Sept. They may still get there but out of our hands now. Can look forward to our game v Swansea instead.

Notts now 138 for 7, Onions has taken all the wickets so far.

Brilliant from Onions and he's really done the Bears a favour there.

Looking at the weather forecast for today and tomorrow, difficult to see us getting a result. At least we should get good batting points and shouldn't lose *touch wood*.

I know it's exciting, but...
-
Bloody rain... I thought you were going through a heat wave back home!
-
Just realised it was a bank holiday weekend, i'll get me coat.
-
Great morning for the Bears. Maximum batting points secured for change.
-
Notts 69-4 in their 1st innings chasing 504-6 declared.
A little luck, some dry weather and a tight performance from our bowlers could see us take a huge step towards the title by close tomorrow.
Come on You Bears!!!!
-
Warwickshire 504/6d; Nottinghamshire 158/4
CMW Read 39*AD Hales 70*WB Rankin 7-0-33-0ID Blackwell 2-1-1-0

Shame we couldn't keep the wickets tumbling, need to get them out early tomorrow.
-
Can't see us taking 14 wickets tomorrow (Adams is out the game now), but important we get 11 points which would leave us nicely 23 ahead of Sussex with just 2 games left - then even better if we beat the Pears and wrap things up next week.
COYB !
-
Looks like a draw to me
-
22 points clear with 2 games to go. 8)
-
Let's not mess this up like last year
-
Just a note to anyone who is interested: the Bears' Pro40 Semi against Lancashire is live on Sky today via the red button.
-
Just a note to anyone who is interested: the Bears' Pro40 Semi against Lancashire is live on Sky today via the red button.
I'm being dragged to the game on our way up to Newcastle.
-
Let's not mess this up like last year
I don't think we messed it up, Lancs were the better team.
-
Not today they weren't. Easy Semi win for the Bears and The Double is on!
-
Well done Warwick
-
Anyone going to the final? I'm looking at it.
-
Let's not mess this up like last year
I don't think we messed it up, Lancs were the better team.
The title was ours to lose on the final day and we lost it- we will have learned a lot from that experience.
-
Anyone going to the final? I'm looking at it.
Is it the same day as the Swansea game?
-
Just to throw a spanner in the one dayer works....
Come on Hampshire...!! Underestimate us at your peril.
(my cricket was learned down here in the south so you'll have to forgive the act of treason!)

It sure is
-
Anyone going to the final? I'm looking at it.
Went to the last final we got to and it was a magical day at Lord's. Bell's match-winning hundred will live long in the memory. Any ideas if Bell and Trott (and Patel for that matter) will be available?
-
Bell and Trott will be. Heard Troughton talking about having to make room for them earlier. Don't think Patel will be.
-
Bell and Trott will be. Heard Troughton talking about having to make room for them earlier. Don't think Patel will be.
Depends on if Trott is fit.............
-
Good start, Worcester won the toss and elected to bat, but we've got them 12/2.
-
Make that 12/3.COYB.
-
This is getting mad.17/5.
-
21-6
You Bears!!!!!!!
-
Let's moan about the pitch.
-
32/7.
-
Excellent - now lets put 300 plus on the board and the title is as good as won!
-
We could get 150 and win by an innings against this lot.
-
True but 3 batting points would be nice.
-
46-8!
Both Notts and Sussex have started well in their respective matches so maximum batting points may well win us the league this week.
-
Wouldn't worry too much about notts as the 28 point gap is too big for them, 22 points here should be enough to see us safe from Sussex.
-
46/9
-
60 all out with both opening bowlers bowling through for a 5-fer!
You Bears!!
-
And 60 all out at lunch. :o
-
What a great morning. I understand the batting points, but do we get bowling points?
-
What a great morning. I understand the batting points, but do we get bowling points?
Yes - 1 point for 3-5 wickets. 2 points for 6-8 wickets and 3 points for 9-10 wickets, within the first 110 overs. So 3 bowling points for us.
-
Let's hope the pitch isn't too bad and we can put a decent total on the board by end of play.
-
Has Bumpy Rhodes called the pitch inspectors............
Bears 72 - 0
-
Has Bumpy Rhodes called the pitch inspectors............
Bears 72 - 0
They are the home team so any pitch problems Worcester will pay the points deduction - they are down anyway now.
-
Bears 114/0 @ Tea..........
COYB
-
It's unlikely to be the pitch as we've almost doubled their score without losing a wicket. I would imagine that it's down to poor batting given that they've only managed 16 batting bonus points all season.
They must feel pretty demoralised given that they game was taken away from them in the 1st session of the 1st day and they are now effectively relegated.
You Bears!!
-
COYB
-
Sussex 221all out and only 1 bonus point which means if we score 350 in 110 overs and win this game we are champions !

Impressive stuff Eastie...........

Blimey what a day for Warwick

Pity I deleted the texts I got from Lancs supporters approximately 12 months ago...

Is it wrong to ejaculate over a cricket score?
-
Is it wrong to ejaculate over a cricket score?
Depends what you're doing at the time. They frown on that kind of thing in Tescos.
-
Interesting report on the days play from Cricinfo:
http://www.espncricinfo.com/county-cricket-2012/content/current/story/580948.html
I had no idea about the Pears bowling attack in this game. The report highlights the gulf between the haves (the test ground counties) and the have nots (the rest). Another reason why I'd rather be a Bear than a Pear!
-
Brilliant day for the Bears. Now lets absolutely annihilate 'em!
-
All out 60 Worcester. Brilliant!
They really are shit!
Now for the title you Bears.
-
COYB. Surely we can't throw it away from here. should've won it last year. It must be ours now.
-
Bears 255/2 off 81.3 overs...................COYB
-
298/3 off 95.3 overs.
52 more runs from 24.3 overs and then win the game and the title's sewn up.
What's the weather forecast for the next couple of days?
Gloomy for Worcester (ha ha ha) I'd guess.
302/3 95.5 overs now. Chopra 173 not out.
An' now you gonna believe usssssssssssss....
-
Bears 303/3 off 96 overs..............COYB
-
Grind them into the ground!
42 of the next 11 overs for maximum batting points.
-
320/4 off 102 overs @ lunch
COYB
-
Grind them into the ground!
42 of the next 11 overs for maximum batting points.
I make it 30 from 48 deliveries for the 4th batting point, which coupled with the win would give us the title.
-
My mistake - its 110 overs not 120. So 30 needed off the next 8. Sussex well on top so lets make sure we do the job boys.
-
Warwickshire 351/5 (109.0 ov)
Lead by 291 runs....................COYB
-
7 bonus points out of 8, with Worcs only getting 1.
Just wonder how many runs we'll get now.
-
Full batting points. now Virun, old son, get your highest score and really hurt them. Depending on the weather I'd bat as long as we can. Sod it - until tea will do. Stick them back in for a couple of hours and watch our title charge before our very eyes.
-
Full batting points would be 400+ by 110 over mark I think.
200 - 1
250 - 2
300 - 3
350 - 4
400 - 5
-
I drop the useless get anyway. Still only 4 points rather than 5 needed (keep forgetting the new bonus point system) so all's still rosy in the Warks garden.
-
Chopra out 5 short of a double ton. Bears lead by 324 though!
-
Jonathan Trott has been ruled out of the rest of the domestic season with an undisplaced fracture in his right hand, the England and Wales Cricket Board have confirmed.
-
Bears declare @ 471 for 8..........a lead of 411
At tea..........10 wickets from the Championship
COYB
-
If it was at Edgbaston it'd be gat if teh players came out to dinosaur Jr - Feel the Pain.
COYB.
-
If my sums are right a win at New Road gives us the title regardless of what happens in the final round of matches.
If the Bears and Sussex win their current games as is likely then our lead is 25 points with a maximum of 24 points available to Sussex in their last game. The weather forecast is good and the Bears are going to win the league at New Road!
You Bears!!!!!!
-
Pears 0/1
Hughes gone to Barker
9 wickets from the championship..............COYB
-
0-1 You Bears!!!!!
-
If my sums are right a win at New Road gives us the title regardless of what happens in the final round of matches.
Is correct as discussed above.
9 wickets in over two days with the weather set fair.
May as well give it us now really.
-
82/2
8 wickets from the championship..............COYB
-
Pears 100/2 @ stumps
8 wickets from the championship..............COYB
-
Big day today! My twitter timeline is littered with messages so COYB! Put a smile on my face please.
-
7 Wickets to go.
I make it that if Surrey draw, then Worcestershire will be mathematically relegated, assuming they lose to us. If Surrey lose then Worcs would be 22 points behind with 16 points available for a win and up to 8 bonus points.
-
6 to go now, it's all to easy.
-
5 down, 5 to go
-
4 from the Championship
-
Three...
-
2 wickets from the Championship
COYB
-
1 wicket from the Championship
COYB
-
COYB - 1 to go!

This Warwickshire is a bit special.A lot to come from them.
Well done Ash,Duggie,Graham and the boys........fantastic.
-
Has a team ever won anything by winning less than half of their matches?
-
loads of other cricket teams,
-
Could you imagine this ever happening in football - villa thrashing blues to win the PL sending them down at the same time. The stuff of dreams.
-
A fantastic season so far and a great win today. The double is on.
-
Could you imagine this ever happening in football - villa thrashing blues to win the PL sending them down at the same time. The stuff of dreams.
Yep we virtually did that twice in the last few years.
-
Great result today. Me and my brother are going to Lord's next week. Someone's certain to complete a trophy double...
-
Yessssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss.
Well done the Bears.
-
Get in, great stuff Warwick!
-
Fantastic!
-
Has a team ever won anything by winning less than half of their matches?
I think you'll find that the poor summer weather has played havoc with the domestic cricket this year. The Bears were well placed to beat Sussex twice but for the rain interruptions although it did come to their rescue against Middlesex.
-
I think Warwick overachieved in the Championship last year. I think we'll finish around mid table this year.
More than capable of putting good runs together in the one day stuff.
I won't rely on yourself in the betting stakes! This Bears squad is capable of winning the tiltle for a couple more seasons yet at least. Giles is a genius plus Graeme Welch with his Bowling coaching
-
Personally I'd like to see the Bears challenge in the Championship and have a decent season in the one day format. We seem to be able to manage either or in a season but not both.
My predictions were pretty good!
-
4th in the CC in reckon.
Garbage in the Pro40 and T20.
Come on you Bears!
Shows what I know...T20 aside.
Well done Warks!
-
Boyd Rankin now out for six weeks, but on the bright side Woakes reckons he'll return by the end of April, so not as bad as first feared.
Mid-table in the championship, mid-table in the Pro40, losing Twenty20 Quarter-Finallists, I reckon.
Useless predictions from me.
-
Could you imagine this ever happening in football - villa thrashing blues to win the PL sending them down at the same time. The stuff of dreams.
That really is pathetic, I didnt know there was a 'football styled' hatred between warwick and worcester...wrong sport mate.
Congratulations to Warwickshire for clinching the title, fully deserved, and good luck for the final next week.
(from a gutted pear)!!
-
Yeah, mid-table I reckon. YOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUU BEEEEEEAAAARRRRRRRSSSSS
Only 4 places off being right :-)
-
Nottinghamshire 155 and 469/8d; Warwickshire 204 and 210/5
CR Woakes 78*ID Blackwell 31*A Carter 12.5-2-57-0GG White 17-6-41-1
Warwickshire require another 211 runs with 5 wickets remaining
-
Pleased to see Derbyshire pip Yorkshire to the division 2 title
-
Nottinghamshire 155 and 469/8d; Warwickshire 204 and 290/8
Match drawn
Glad we didn't lose the last game, great season you bears!

I did warn you....great game, well done Hampshire....good day all round, for me ;-)
-
1 and a half trophies for the Bears this season (i'm ignoring the stupid fewer wickets rule)
Great season.
-
Just got back. Great game and a great day out just a shame to lose it on the final ball. Gutted for Neil Carter.
Thanks a million to Rutski for the tickets. Me and the old man had a blast.
-
Hey hilts....just read your comment on the Bears forum thingy too!
Just got back as well.....great game of cricket and my son managed to win a signed cricket bat and got Trott's autograph on his Bears cap which cushioned the pain at the end.
Loads of empty seats.....not like the old finals when it was packed out which is a shame.
-
Loads of empty seats.....not like the old finals when it was packed out which is a shame.
It's been the same for a few years now, its a shame. I went to many a final in the 90s when tickets were like gold dust.
Great game, pretty gutted to be honest.
Carter should not have been playing in all honesty.
Should Chris Woakes just focus on his batting and become a second string bowler?
-
It looked a pretty good pitch and I guess Woakes and Carter, both the same speed, were coming onto the bat nicely.
I think Woakes's batting has more upside potential than his bowling, though at county level his bowling is still more than good enough.
Carter has been a wonderful player for the Bears and he obviously had a good semi final, but I do think Barker is a better bowler, batsman and fielder than him. A sad end to his Bears career.
-
I think that's right - the spinners had the upper hand all through the day and I thought with Patel and Blackwell we had the better spinners and that we'd win but we were just unlucky on the final ball. Such fine margins.
-
Also thought their keeper had a good game....stood up well to Wood who also bowled nicely.
I guess we were also hampered by Wright's injury too.
-
Great day for me as I whilst I am obviously a Villa fan, my cricket team is Hampshire!
Weird I know, but my dad who is a Brummie and Villla fan from a family going back generations in Erdington was doing his National Service in the RAF on Thorney Island near Portsmouth when I was born in Pompey. We then moved back to Birmingham shortly afterwards when his stint ended. However, after that, I continued to come down to Hampshire in the summer to holiday with my godmother and her husband used to take me a lot to see Hampshire and so they became my team - despite living within spitting distance of Edgbaston. Those were the days of Barry Richards, Gordon Greenidge, Trevor Jesty, Andy Roberts and Malcolm Marshall so it wasn't difficult to end up supporting them as a young impressionable teenager. Feel like a traitor in the camp!!!
-
Missed the game and just read the reports, gutted about the result and how it came down to the last ball but the championship softens the blow, still a great season
-

Me too Richard...moved down from the midlands at an early age and my cricket was learnt here in Bournemouth. Has there been a better opening partnership than Richards and Greenidge? Then we are biased.
Was lucky enough to do the scoreboard as a kind when at school & met all the Hants players regularly...including the legend that is Malcolm Marshall. Top bloke and magnificent player.

Funny there should be at least two of us and just shows what an influence people and places can have on who you end up supporting. On the odd occasions that Richards and Greenidge were on song together - which didn't seem to be that often in my mind - it was absolutely fantastic to watch. Somehow more appealing that watching Dennis Amiss opening the batting at the time though Warwicks had some fantastic players too. Did Kalicharran (sp?) and Kanhai both play for them?
-
though Warwicks had some fantastic players too. Did Kalicharran (sp?) and Kanhai both play for them?
Certainly did. Kanhai scored over 11,000 runs at an average of over 50 for Warwickshire.

The Bears including Villa fans Bell and Woakes will be parading the trophy at half time on Sunday:

Good to see them at HT of the game. I am biased, but I still think Bell should be out in Sri Lanka opening for England.
-
me too Tom

So who will take over at Warwickshire now? I always thought Andy Moles was a shoe in one day, maybe now is the time?
EDIT - Although looking at his CV, a couple of "disagreements" with senior players and a couple of "disagreements" with boards doesn't bode we'll
-
I thought Andy Moles was in New Zealand.
-
So who will take over at Warwickshire now?
Dougie Brown.
-
So who will take over at Warwickshire now?
Dougie Brown.
Would have thought so.
-
Aww, I've met him and he was wearing a Villa shirt at the time (played in a Villa old stars team).
-
Patel has been signed on for next season again according to the beeb.
-
Dermot Reeve? How about Nick Knight? I do like Dougie though. He worked in the PE department at my school over the winter a few times and was a real nice fella.
-

Reeve has been media-based since his retirement, an absence for cocaine newspaper expsose aside. Knight has worked soley in the media since he retired. Dougie is a Bear through and through, will have the respect of the players and can move the club forward in line with long-term plans.
Unless a coach of some experience is available or Ricky Ponting fancies a shot I'd give it to Dougie.
-
Dougie Brown for me, he once helped my brother stop a shoplifter at Selly Oak Sainsburys, top lad!
-
I too believe it will be Dougie but dont discount Graeme Welch. I'm sure Ashley will have some input.....it needs to be a 'bear' of some repute.....that seems to be our way now after the choices of people like Greatbach in the past.
-
Maybe not Dermot then.
-
Have we got room for Pointing as a player.3 counties have been in touch according to the Guardian.
-
I thought Andy Moles was in New Zealand.
andy moles is the size of new zealand!
-
Have we got room for Pointing as a player.3 counties have been in touch according to the Guardian.
Probably not now that Patel has signed on again as overseas player.
-
Graeme Welch is a good shout. But I'd like it to be some one who has played or coached at the very top level. Too early for Strauss maybe Tom Moody?
-
i went along to edgbaston today to buy some gear for my lads for christmas specifically to start winter nets in january, as it is 2 1/2 weeks to christmas day i didnt think this would be a problem, but they only open the shop on a monday, tuesday and wednesday upon my arrival.
is it ludicrus that this time of year the shop is only open on 3 days at the beginning of the week or should the county be thinking bigger and opening more reasonible times? i then went to the villa, then they proceeded to piss me off big time with their lack of stock!

there is very little kit available on the online store.

The Bears never have much stock in.They have a lot of England tat.

Did you know that Darryl Mitchell, captain at Worcs, is a big Villa fan?
I was talking/slurring to him in the pub in Shepherds Bush before and after the QPR game last week. Very nice fella.
-
Apparently David Saker, England's bowling coach, is interested in the Warwickshire job and Warwickshire are keen on talking to him.
