Very good but any other player would have been dropped a long time ago based on his recent test form. Indian's carried him for about a year now. May be they can now retire him and get on with rebuilding their batting line up post Dravid etc.

Yes, I agree with this. I think with India there is almost a situation where it's more important what Sachin does rather than the team. Similar in a way to the Wolves in the 80's with "BULLY".
Either way it's a fine achievment but like yourself, I think they need to get on with rebuilding their team and whether that includes Tendulkar being a part of it is a moot point.
As a Warwick member of some years, sadly no more, I have to say I always considered Lara the greater player. In terms of weight of runs, Tendulkar has it, but always thought Lara was touched by genius. Then again, I though Dominic Ostler would play for England :-)

Tendulkar is a wonderful batsmen, but like you Dave Lara just had something else for me. Also Lara was for most of his career in a very poor Windies side.

It's a hell of an achievement and one that will take a long time for anyone else to achieve.
Like others, I think Lara's aura sets him above Sachin but wonder if that is because I saw him play numerous times for the Bears and the Windies. The memory of his 1994 summer for the Bears will live long with me.
I've only seen Sachin play about 3 times and always wanted him to play that sublime innings but he never did.

It's possible this is where I may be getting these thoughts from as well. I was lucky enough to be at Edgbaston on the afternoon he got his 501. Now although there was nothing on the match at the time, as it was petering out to a draw, the pressure just grew and grew as did the crowd as word got round what was going on. I think he was on about 270 odd when I got there at lunch time and he just knocked off the remaining 230 in two sessions. Although the bowling was ordinary, it was still an incredible feat.
Then, for good measure, I also had the following day off work and went to see the Bears topple the mighty Surrey as they were called, down at the Oval in a B&H semi final. We chased down around 270/280 I think and it was looking quite tight until Lara came in at number 7 (he was off the field for ages I think with exhaustion from the day before) and he knocked off a sublime 70 odd to get us to the final where we trounced them lot from New Road.
A great summer and one that won't be repeated.

I was talking about this at golf on saturday - a couple of the lads answered 'Sachin' to my question of, 'who to make a 100 for your life?'...neither Lara or Sachin would get my vote. Steve Waugh although statistics suggest otherwise.
