Aston Villa defender Carlos Cuellar says he has still not received a new contract offer from the midlands club.

Cuellar, whose current deal expires this summer, has been holding talks with Villa over his future.

But the Spaniard, in impressive form in recent weeks, confirmed no concrete proposal has so far been put forward by Villa.

He said: "Has there been an offer? No, there has been no offer yet. I am relaxed about it, I am fine.

"If they want me to stay here, it will be easy. I am happy here at Villa, I would like to stay.

"If not, if my contract is finished I will have to say 'thank you, goodbye, it was a pleasure to be here, and I am grateful for the last four years.'

"In football it sometimes happens, it's alright."

Cuellar, signed from Rangers for £8 million, is prepared to give Villa every opportunity to re-sign him.

He said: "Because I'm in my last year, from January I could speak to other teams, even sign if I wanted.

Must be kept.

Even if he's not first choice, he's handy to have on the bench.

The Brigada lads sing a very funny song in praise of Carlos. I'll try to get all the words for your enjoyment. But it does include the offer to let Carlos have sex with all their wives. :o

I don't get it, just offer him a contract our defence has improved and we look better with him in it.

Great! One of the few players who's happy to stay and play for the club and we have not even offered him a deal.

These things take a bit of time, mainly as the solicitors and agents involved need to show they're earning their astronomical fees.

I like Carlos. But isn't this more about him and/or his agent advertising his availability to all and sundry, though - in the nicest possible way of course?

What do you expect from our dumb board? Luke Young was allowed to leave (Hutton isn't as good). Before that Gary Cahill was let go and Zat Knight signed instead! The hierarchy at Villa is great at making stupid decisions, so expect Carlos to go on a free in the summer.

The board wouldn't have had much say in those player transfers, and rightly so.

I don't think he'll be going to Rangers now, he might as well stay.

I'm hoping he and Clarke are our main central defending pair next season, I'd be happy to see the back of Collins and dunne, I reckon the dressing room would be a happier place.

Its one of those 6 of one half a dozen of the other things, for me we start letting players like Cuellor walk and for nothing maybe, and then we are happy to go through another season with Dunne and Collins in the back 4 simply says it all, we are batting for Premiership survival yet again, assuming we are going to survive this time around.

Fact is Dunne Collins and Cuellor really should all be moved on, the Villa back 4 isn't good and its a decent bet that next season they would be that much worse.

We have to start looking for a decent RB, 2 CB's a LB and backup, then we can start on the midfield.

Mr Lerner.

Reminds me of Mellberg in that he would be of those players we let go but should have kept.

I thought it was a case of Mellberg wanted to go and play for Juventus rather than we let him go.

I thought it was a case of Mellberg wanted to go and play for Juventus rather than we let him go.

Once he got into his last year it was too late. Upto august 2007 he was saying as soon as he saw the contract offer he'd probably sign. We never made him a contract offer and by the autumn he'd asked for talks to be put on hold probably due to him being plonked in at right back to make way for the stella talent that was Knight. To be fair when you've got 80m burning a hole in your pocket, you're probably not that worried about losing a transfer fee, but it still remains the case that if we'd wanted to keep him it should have been settled way before January 2008 when he signed for Juventus and probably a good year before would have been sensible
