If we win he's even shitter.

We found this formation when Bent was out and played our best, he hasn't played it since.

That's a good team, in my opinion. Should be good enough to beat Blackburn if we go for it.

Thats the team I wanted that I posted in the pre-match thread, with the exception of Herd for Clark who I assume isn't fit.  Happy with that, but I was quite happy with the team he picked at Wigan, didn't stop him employing awful tactics.

Just to clarify, by 'a good team' I mean it's the right one to pick in the circumstances! I don't think it's that good in and of itself.

Anyway, I was surprisingly confident we'd win this, then I saw that Risso was going to this one, which seems to herald a stinker of a performance.

Ah, he's bound to get some luck sometime, and so are we. 3-0 to us.

i hope we scrape a draw.

Well, actually i hope we win 8-0 but realistically I hope we draw.

I like the look of that team. Bit more solidity in midfield compared to the Wigan line-up, and potential creativity and pace up front. When you see a team like that you wonder why we're struggling so much. Then you realise.

Yep best team to pick under the circumstances. No Ivanhoe in midfield thankfully. Blackburn are going to scrap and scrap hard but we should have enough to beat them.

We found this formation when Bent was out and played our best, he hasn't played it since.

Because it would have been an easy decision to leave out your record signing when was fit again wouldn't it? And it would have also created a million new threads on how it meant we are a selling club and we're about to cash in on Bent.

Ireland and N'Zogbia really do make difference for us when they are on song, they just add a little class and assurance to the way we play. If we can keep patient and confident enough to pass the ball around, keep those two of them involved, we'll do some decent stuff.
If we resort to aimless boots up the field, to sitting back in our own half, we won't.

There. Simple.

Young being slightly different in that he is a left winger by position that is right footed, and fergie has played him across all 3 front roles.

Downing and Albrighton were always much better on their natural sides though last season I am sure you would accept. And where did the stupid fergie play the left winger Giggs much of his career? Pretty strange manager to pick  for the argument.

So far so good and as said earlier in the week the Bent injury maybe a blessing, this side looks completely different, players not reliant on lumping the long ball in for the big fella up front, they are having to pass the ball and work hard, Ireland and Gabby are linking very well, N'Zogbia look comfortable and Albrighton is putting in a shift.

Better team, better work ethic, and Gabby is applying an awful lot of influence up front, hopefully once the game goes on and he gets back to the sharpness required up front, he'll respond even faster.

Not disguising the fact that Blackburn look awful of course.

It really does beg the question of what role Bent has at the club? He is a valuable asset, our record signing, and a player that we've after for a long time. Yet, arguably we play a lot more complete when he's not in the team and we have Gabby leading the line. I want us to have the guns to supply Bent but I fear that would be an investment too far for us. It might just be easier to cash in, and reinvest in fortifying this strategy and players that can work within this system.

Just thinking out loud like.
Title: Re: Blackburn Rovers v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: paul_e on March 03, 2012, 03:57:20 PM
Much better performance but we're still too narrow and we really needed to get 2 or 3 for the amount of play we had.

Regarding the wingers it's all about horses for courses, young is great on the left wing as he can drift in and make things happen or shoot on his stronger foot, Albrighton isn't comfortable doing that and doesn't really provide anything from the left.  From the right he sticks wide and tries to get to the line, and can deliver when he gets there, it also means that the left back has to move out wider and creates gaps for Ireland to move into.

Pretty good so far. We look much better with three proper midfielders playing central midfield.

We are moving the ball around very well.

Our only problem is that it has been one way traffic but we only have one goal to show for it.

McLeish looked totally baffled in one camera shot. He's not the only one. Why has he not picked a balanced side like this more often?

So there you have it. Bent's 9 goals are expunged.

Well I guess it's a question of preferring Bent's nine goals and drawing/losing whilst playing poorly or 20 goals from various players and Villa wins.

More goals from one player versus more points for the team is something some people can't quite get their heads round.

The point is being totally missed by the blinding faith people have because of the ties Gabby has to the club. He is not as good a forward as Darren Bent, who would have done a lot more than Gabby did with the chance at the end of the first half, moves a lot more than Gabby, gets in front of defenders and actually scores regularly. We have played just as well with Bent in the side. Claret and Blue specs say he is not Gabby though.

Petrov is out on his feet, his reactions have gone and he looks totally flat-footed.  Needs to be subbed but I guarantee he'll be on for at least another 15minutes, this is where McLeish shows his lack of tactical awareness.

I'd take off Gabby and give Weimann the last 15-20 as well.

I'd disagree, Gabby is a better all round player than Bent, but his movement in the box is not as good. I'd even say their finishing is on par, Bent misses sitters too. Bent just has that brilliant ability to get in that space more often so gets more chances to score. Owen was like this, he scored lots of goals but also missed a lot too.

Most top forwards miss more because they are there more.  Gabby is always behind the defender. He is a decent target man, but never a top 4-6 player. The MO of a centre forward is to score goals and that is what they are measured on.

Neither are top 4-6 players though. He plays for us and not Utd, City, Spurs etc. Spurs sold him when they were only a top 6 club. I admit I like him, he scores our goals. Just a pity Gabby hasn't got that extra ability to see the yard space in the box. Or just the same a pity Bent  does not hold it up like a centre forward should.

Our confidence is more fragile than a china vase. Part of that is the manager's fault, part of that is down to the players. We don't have strong personalities at the club, and when the going gets tough there is nobody to get them to refocus again out on the pitch. If McLeish is to stand any chance he must find character players. This second half isn't surprising because we haven't won many, we've probably let more leads slip than any other team and the cycle keeps repeating. We need to hang on here but I now fear the worst.

Apart from the 9 in 13 that kept us up last season.

Depends if you hold the simplistic view that goals + doing nothing > fewer goals + doing everything.

Pssst....goals win football matches.
Yea, that useless bastard Messi.  Apart from scoring 40 odd goals already this season he has done fuck all...

Unlucky from Gabby.

Or heading the ball off his shoulder and straight at the keeper? Was good movement and a good save though.

And the argument that Bent does nothing has been proven wrong many times on other threads, and is a complete and utter myth that is conveniently pedaled

Pssst....goals win football matches.

Pssst....so does setting them up for other people.....and putting opposition players under pressure.....and chasing back to help out the defense.....and holding the ball up allowing us the keep possession.

Yep it's bollocks, if we set up with the exact team who started the game with Bent as the central striker he'd score and our game wouldn't be affected.

I absolutely kid you not, I have played football and anybody on here that has will tell you the same thing if they have, there is nothing more galling than seeing a team with so little backbone even if you don't support them.
