Thanks Leeg. Watch it die a death now!

Anyway, reserve lineup for the game V Swansea.

Siegrist, Lichaj, Williams, Webb, Baker, Carruthers, Herd, Johnson, Cameron, Taylor, Robinson.
Subs: Grealish, Barrett, Graham, Lewis, Caira.

Before conspiracy theorists wonder if Weimann isn't playing because of starting against Blackburn, it's because he's away with the national U21's.

Herd played all but the last three minutes and more game time for Lichaj, which is good because I think we'll need to use both at some point in the remaining games.

Anyone know why Enda didn't play (International call up maybe?).

I don't think the Republic of Ireland U-21s play again until May.

Might as well stick this in here as start a new thread:

Can any regular reserve and yoof watchers give me some info on how good Connor Taylor is? Tamworth have signed him on loan to the end of the season.

He's decent. Won't make it at Villa but perhaps a good championship player.

The Academy team beat Norwich in saturday morning at Bodymore.  A really good performance in very windy conditions.  Jack Grealish gave us the lead from the penalty spot.  Grealish, who played off the front man was brought down after a mazy dribble for the penalty.

Norwich equalised, a little against the run of play, with a great strike from Loza but Brad Lewis soon put us back in front with a far post header from Jordan Grahams free kick.

The very impressive Grealish sealed the win with a 25 yard effort midway through the second half.

The reserves are home to Newcastle on monday evening at Villa Park at 7pm (unless they switch it to Bodymore at 11, 12, 1 or 2 O'Clock or Hinckley on monday, tuesday or wednesday)

Who do we have out on loan at the moment?
Is the Fonz back?  He did not appear for Leicester at the weekend.

Apropos nothing at all, since the re-organisation of the reserve league, I have missed seeing the second string play - far more than the first team.

The reserves have been a better watch since the time of Gregory.

Also are the opposition as experienced or as driven to win as our boys. Obviously several of our team have 1st team experience but I don't recognise any names in the Newcastle side. (Although, I don't look at their team sheets every week)

Beautiful football in the 2nd half. Think we need to get them out on loan earlier though. How old is wee Barry? He's been this good for years at that level. When you think of Nathan Redmond doing well in the Championship at 17, well, it's food for thought anyway. Not sure what the answer is to be honest. Summat to debate perhaps.

One day soon, when we're safe, I'd like us to see us play 6 or 7 of the reserves together.  Whilst they might not be as good individually as their senior counterparts, their unity, familiarity and a winning habit might make them greater than the sum of their parts.

When introduced in isolation, I think they naturally adopt the mentality of the first team, which right now is probably not a good thing.

Yes, agree with that Dante. Witness Barry in the reserves, running games, telling the others what runs to make etc. And they all look to pass to him. He just doesn't get that with senior pros. No coincidence that his best moments have come linking up with Albrighton and Hogg.

While acknowledging that it hasn't really happened for him, and that he's what -22? - I think Barry has so much ability, we should be very wary of letting him go for a good while yet.

This is where I think Villa have been very poor over recent years.  We have concentrated more on these lads winning reserve games than getting them out on loan and playing regularly with "big boys".  The likes of Bannan, Albrighton, Delfonso(sp), etc. etc. should have been out on season long loans when they were 18/19 not waiting till they were 21/22.

How can our reserve team be so good but our first team so crap?
This is the killer-question for teams with Academies.

I do not watch much of the Reserve-team / youth games but watching the  first team recently - and GG, BB, Herd and Albrighton in particular - I'd say:

- Villa does seem to be a club that takes the reserves more seriously than many: maybe that means much of the oppo are not as strong or as committed as they perhaps should be.
- the quality of the Premiership is obviously way ahead of the reserve league and playing against seasoned / international pros is a massive step up: look at GG and BB against McCarthy and MacArthur at Wigan. Look at pretty much all of Fonz's games.
- the players often come into the first team not playing their best position: BB playing wide against Blackburn; GG as MF strong-arm against Wigan ...
- the physicality of the Premiership makes it really tough for players like BB who has the talent but is physically disadvantaged (I speak as someone his height but somewhat heavier / older!). In contrast, CC has been able to make the transition more easily.
- getting a run in the first team is key for players like GG .... but Albie has had that and has not really kicked on. Whereas Herd has taken full advantage (at least, until his injury).
- getting drafted in to a first team low on confidence and results is never going to be easy.
- probably having to cow-tow to our old pros who may not be the most gifted / intelligent / motivated / other cannot be easy.

If the much-vaunted clear-out hppens in the summer, we may see this generation flowering more obviously thann we have done so to date.

Excellent points EffDee. I think the time is fast approaching when we could have a midfield of Albrighton, Clark, Herd, Gardner and Bannan, and for us to expect them to be old enough, big enough (BB excepted), experienced enough and talented enough to be competitive. Can't wait personally.

Even on the proverbial paper that team looks comparable with what we currently put out.  Add in that they've played together a lot and that they will naturally have to step up with regards to leadership and trying to stamp their authority on the team then it could be good.

Licaj < Hutton is another one of those instances where the difference in quality might mean it's better to trust the younger (cheaper) option.

In addition to the above variables there's also the uncertainty of individual character, resilience, commitment and single-mindedness.
Young BB has already shown some mental flakiness with his driving problems earlier this season; Fonz apparently suffered from the complacency that sometimes comes with the first full-time contract.

Try as they might, the coaching staff can only go so far in being able to shape character to ally with the footballing talent the kids already possess.

On the flip side, Herd seems to relish the opportunities he's getting.

Oh, I agree; hence the points I was making re the uncertainty of it all.
Herd was never the guy that people spoke glowingly about but he has matured, presumably remained totally focussed on succeeding and has the physical and - it seems - the skills attributes to make it.
Others may or may not come through over the next 6-9 months as they mature.

Why is it that other prem teams are happy to give 1st team opportunitys to players aged 17/18 yrs yet we are wary of putting 21/22 yr olds in the team. Look at players like Rooney/Walcott/Giggs etc and see how old they were when they started holding down regular first team places.

The ones you mentioned are very exceptional. Even Beckham and Scholes only started playing regularly in their early twenties. But the main issues are we are never comfortable enough to give kids that young a real chance and mainly play them in emergencies. Also where Arse and ManU can start a load of them in Cup matches or even league matches, we can't as we will probably be done for fielding a weakened side.

I love the fact we've got so many kids coming through. But I've watched a few ressie games on avtv and the gap with the premier league is massive. I do worry that we have a bunch of players who beat all comers from the age of 14 upwards, but aren't well prepared enough for the challenge of first team football. For the most part, they've either been ok or poor when on loan. Cahill's performances at burnley were of a very different order compared to more recent experiences. I think they might tend to be a bit 'nice'.

I gave Herd a 50/50 chance of making it and to be fair to the lad he really has seized his chance. Whilst others have disappointed, he's gone the other way.
A tidy midfielder who was equally comfortable at full back, he's made his game about tenacity and spirit. If he carries on in the same vein he'll be a darling of the fans.
He was no stranger to the scoresheets in the academy either. He can score goals.

His attrributes (in theory) compliment Gardner and Clark and I could see the three of them forming a useful mdfield at times.

Yes, I suggested those three the other day, good ability and would not be found wanting physically. Plenty of academy graduates in the team would IMO, help Bannan the most. He is the leader of these players, the one they all look for when they get the ball. He in turn orchestrates them, tells them when to make a run, or just give him a return pass. I think we won't see the best of Bazza until he's bossing the first team about and running games like he does in the reserves.

BTW, I can't recommend these games strongly enough. Can't make tomorrow myself (working 2-10) but I will be at the next Villa Park game in early April. They really are magic to watch at times.

Another great performance from the lads. Villa, at this level play with great style.  I know it is at a lesser standard but they remind me of a mini Barcelona.  The players, who have had four or five years of almost constant success are so confident in their own ability that they can ignore some of the the crowds calls to "get it in the middle" "knock it long" "don't take that short corner" and they can keep the ball knowing that they will ultimately be successful.

Wee Barry is a football genius and his ability is several steps above most people he shares a pitch with.

Andreas Weimann is on fire at the moment.  His movement and finishing ability is first class and he is the nearest thing to Darren Bent that we have at the club.

What I said was ' Just a mention of how much admiration the supporters have of our Academy and Reserve players. Alex McLeish is giving them their chance and they are grabbing it with both hands. The presence of Sid and Kevin has to help with the young players.'
Marc Albrighton said that he couldn't agree more as he had been playing under those two for so many years.

It may be a bit Doug-like but Sid and Kevin are like uncles to those kids.

We're still in the South division, but for some reason this season the fixtures include teams from the 'other' division.

3-1 in the end. We fimsihed the game pressing but it really was a bit of a mis-match.

Enda Stevens didn't show much, Johnson and our right back looked the pick of our lads.

Agreed, Steve. Stevens looked like he was just going through the motions, nobody really stood out but then this really was a team of 'kids', so you'd expect them to learn from the experience, if nothing else.

The Johnson goal gets my vote for Goal of the Season. He knew exactly what he was doing and boy did he place it. Genius!

They got sucker-punched a few times last night and the scoreline very much flatters Liverpool but it wasnt a vintage performance by any stretch. Still top though.

I heard Vivian was exceptional in the center of mid but Neil was off the pace up front.  ;)

Well done to the reserves, champions again and now the young kids started to step up to the first team.

Yes, Man Utd by the looks of things.

I assume Bannan, Gardner, Herd, Lichaj and co will be in line for a reserves recall for the play off final?  It would only be fair as thats what United did in the League game the cheating wankers.  Is the Final at Southern winners this year?

Well done yet again. I think the play off final will be at Old Trafford against Man U.  The older reserve lads will be very keen to play. Bannan attends every reserve game he can. Even when he was at Blackpool on loan he always came back to watch the reserves. The other night against Liverpool I was in the lower section of the Trinity and sitting in front of me was B.B, Andy W, Herd, Lichaj and a couple of other young pro's.  Bannan gets a bit of stick on here occasionally as a bit of a bighead but the truth is that loads of ordinary fans know him because he and his Mom and Dad have always mixed with us and have never played the big I am.

We play all the teams in the southern division home and away.

We play all the teams in the northern division ONCE. Home or away.

Our academy team (Because most of the reserves were in the 1st team due to injuries) lost 3 - 1 against Manu who had an international back 4 plus another England International in Mid-field.

I'd have Taylor and Nelson Addy down as certs. Apart from that there arent too many I'd have down as likely to leave.
Its always hard though when you have a good group but you have to move some on to make room.

Siegrist, Webb, Williams, Johnson, Graham, Grealish and Burke are very unlikely to go anywhere I think.

I'd poss add Caira to that list & before yesterday Drennan was one who never stood out to me on 5/6 times that I've seen him

Saw Devine was on the bench yesterday - presume he has been injured as not seen his name this season and he looked a big solid unit at centre half last year.

With skill and pace like that, I see a bright future here for Carruthers.

Also United have sat back and defended a lot. You can't blame Bannan for trying to force the issue a little bit when we're not breaking them down.

At least we're starting to create chances. We've been sitting too deep, hoping to catch them on the counter attack.
Hopefully we'll really go at them second half. We've shown them too much respect. Man Utd don't look up to much.

0-0 at half time. We've just about had the better of it, without either team creating much.

Lovely dribble and wall pass from Carruthers at the end, we should have gone in one up.

Our tactics are a bit first team, with more high fighting balls played forward than we really need, but pretty good overall.

I guess the presence of many of these players mean that an experimental team on Sunday is not up for consideration.

Went wide, but that free kick from Gardner was quality, real whip in it, keeper didn't stand a chance if it had been inside the post, it's nice to see quality like that at the club.

I really think carruthers has looked lively. Very two footed

Disappointed with Gardner though - excellent free kick apart. He looks leaden footed and has just missed an absolutely unbelievable sitter. And I mean unbelievable!

So much raw potential but they can't bloody score.

Bannan looking very good. Gardner should have had two.

As an aside, Johnson reminds me of seedorf, he just drifts around effortlessly and seems to just pop up in the right place, think he's going to be a great player.

We are looking much better in this half generally though. Bannan and Carruthers look a cut above their midfield.

Yes, they've all got good quick feet, movement and touch.

Gardner looks a fair bit slower and seem quite unalert. Am I being harsh?

You just know Man Utd will get a penalty here to decide the game. It's the only way they'll beat us, they look toothless up front.

Hasn't had a good game. Not very influential compared to earlier in the season when he was bossing every match.

Really enjoyed that second half, whatever the result. Should have scored at least two.

I thought the 2 centre backs, Bannan in spells (tho he still tried too many hollywood balls) and Johnson all looked really good for the most part. But Carruthers looked really, really good to me. And the passing quality in the second half was really good, albeit with more space as players tired

Gardner looked pretty off the pace I thought. I hope that's not a typical performance

I thought that Will Keane was meant to be a player for them, but he looked absolute Blues!

I thought Gardner was just playing the disciplined role and letting the others drift around more, as a unit the midfield looked really good.

Confident pen from BB.

Dominated the match. We missed Weimann.

No worries. Not like the reserve league title is actually worth anything.  ;D

Ship out half the first team and put these lads in. We'll probably steam the league.

Oh well, we've won the league something like 4 times in 5 seasons so let's not be too greedy. The main thing is that the next manager gives the lads a chance of making it.

I'd love us to be successful with a minimal number of mercanaries in the first team.

We were by far the better team there, we squandered quite a few chances throughout the game unfortunately.  Oh well.  I'll content myself with the knowledge that our lads genuinely looked a different class to their lot. Gary Gardner looks to have lost a little bit of form and confidence but he will be back, no doubts there.

Shame we didn't win, but well done anyway the reserves.

Decent turnout from Villa and nice to see Marc albrighton sitting with us.

The petrov applause was carried out on the 19th minute.

Again, well done to the players for doing so well again this season.

You've got to be good to get away with them. Otherwise, you look a mug.
Second half should have buried them.

I see they have removed that banner than showed how many years since City have won the league.

The south Stand, that used to have Old Trafford Manchester on the fascia, now has Sir Alex Ferguson Stand across it.

Bannan's getting loads of stick from Manyoo fans on Twitter for cupping his ear to some kids who were booing him before his penalty.  Shouldn't have fucking booed him then should you, you Cornish pricks.  Perhaps he should have done a Cantona instead, they don't seem to mind that after all.

Just back after a few post match beers and thought we played some really decent stuff second half with Carruthers, Johnson and Bannan all playing well.

The defence looked solid but thought we looked a bit toothless up front without Weimann and not entirely sure how Siegriest failed to stop that first penalty.

All in all a refreshing to change us pass the ball around rather than the usual shite served up by the first team.

Was sat with the home fans and really enjoyed Bannan giving them a bit of banter back after scoring his pen - the average age of them was only about 11 but very funny nonetheless!
