Bit soft in the centre but its certainly an attacking line-up. They need to win though or I get the impression McLeish will feel justified in selecting tumbling bear next time.

I told you he would start Warnock again when we're playing away.

But of course people flamed me saying I was negative. No, I was just realistic.

Huge relief Heskey's not playing and great to see Gabby back. Looks a bit lightweight midfield but Wigan aren't too physical there so should be OK. Have to say (apart from the fullbacks but no real cover there so OK) I like that line up.

Let's be fair - Bannan and Gardner in midfield! That's good.

Afternoon gents.

Bloody hell, interesting midfield. It looks a little light in the middle but at least these guys know how to keep the ball and pass.
Possibly the most attacking side we've put out all season, AM is really going for the 3 points.

Come on Villa!

That's the point, people will give him much more of a chance if he sets out to attack. I'm a little surprised there's no Petrov, Ireland or N'Zog but I asked him to attack so I can't complain.

Petrov injured?

There isn't a tackle in that midfield. At least it should be entertaining.

Come on you Villa boys.  That team has the potential to play excellent football, though I may have started with Ireland instead of Bannan (if im being picky).  I'm actually looking forward to the game now.

Thanks Sherlock, but perhaps it's more to do with Dunne being out, so Cuellar has to play centre back today.

As for midfield, Petrov has a thigh injury, and yes that does seem a little lightweight, but what option do we have?

Title: Re: Wigan Athletic v Aston Villa Match Thread

Wigan are pretty soft in midfield so I think we can get away with that midfield. All depends on how well Bannan gets stuck in alongside GG. He can't leave it all to Gary.

I'm quite confident we can get a win. If we don't, there'll be trouble. I'd say this is the only opposition in the EPL we could conceivably play this midfield. It'll be an open game, but hopefully our backline is solid enough. It should be. I don't see us keeping a clean sheet, but they don't look capable of scoring too many.

1-3 Villa
Gabby, Keane, Bent.
Keano to run the show. Hope this won't be his final game in a Villa shirt.

Bannan needs to stop being such a tart. Maybe it's he wants to prove something when he comes on as a sub, always trying to play the 50 yard killer ball through but it's a different mentality needed when you're playing 90 minutes. Today he has his chance to show what he's about.

Like you, I'm very much looking forward to the game.

3 points today are a must Villa - it's a ground we always do well at, they are lightweight and have far less quality than us, as long as we have the right mental attitude the win is there for the taking.  Sod it 0-3 to us, Bent, Keane and Young GG to notch his first of many for us.

N'Zogbia to come on and get sent off in a petulant manner.

I know sometimes its a bit hollywood, but he has the ability to do it and, unlike most of our other players, he isn't scared to try something different.

Sure but my point is it seems all about him, rather than the team. Keeping it simple works too. I'm happy he'sstarting and can see why he's there ahead of Ireland. He certainly offers more in the chasing, tracking and tackling departments. He has his chance, let's hope he responds to the opportunity.

Although we have attacking players, I hope McLeish won't use negative tactics, even if we're winning.

Just look at the defensive traits. The midfield is very lightweight, the defence in general is a pile of rubbish. Need to keep attacking all the way. If we sit back then expect Wigan to get easy chances.

Interesting line-up today. Attacking, but a little lightweight looking. Would have thought, as they're available, maybe starting with Ireland and Zog would have been preferable...imagine they will both feature at some point. Hopefully AMc hasn't set out too much of a defensive strategy with that lot...

They will all need to work hard and close down Wigan. I'm not convinced that you must have a bully in the midfield though I understand the benefits of having one. Keep the ball, knock it around and when you lose it work your bollocks off to win it back. If we do that today we will win.

With that midfield, there should be relatively few hoofs (are you listening Collins?). Gardner and Bannan should come for the ball and be given the ball.

Personally I would've started N'Zogbia instead of Albrighton.

What is noticeable is that Robbie Keane, a veteran striker, is on a totally different wavelength when it comes to moving into, and creating, space than the rest of our team.

If we gifted this much of the ball against a team who had a threat up front, we'd get hammered.

I'm just so impressed with what Pardew has done. Yeh, they'll take a tonking every so often like last week. But by having an attack first mentality and a good scouting system finding technically sound players they will always have a better than even chance against the majority of the teams in this league. It's a mindset thing and I'm tired of watching hit on the break football as a first tactic. It's exciting when you have the guns to play that way when you need to, but when you don't just get sucked deeper and deeper until you concede.

We have the players in the squad to be much better than this. I still contend we are one of the slowest teams overall in key positions, but we should never be playing this bad despite that.

Not the biggest surprise, we have a very imbalanced team.

One centre back, one dobbin, two half soaks, a winger, two central midfield and three strikers.

I'd bring on Herd and Ireland for Albrighton and Bannan and match them up for numbers in central midfield. Move Keane out wide left and switch Gabby to the right.

VILLA: Given, Hutton, Collins, Cuellar, Warnock, Albrighton, Bannan, Gardner, Agbonlahor, Bent, Keane.

Who sits in front of the back four and provides the link up play from deep ?

Well ?

Quite.

I reckon Bannan and Gardner have touched the ball 5 or 6 times between them.

It seems we're really missing Petrov today to do just that role. I say bring Chris Herd on, he always seems more than capable of doing it.

Without trying to be too negative... but genuinely, if things don't change, I can see us going down this season now. The two teams are as bad as each other and it's awful to watch.

Doing a porcupine as a turd is less painful than watching this dross.

It really pisses me off that the "we're going down" thing is brought up every time we're not winning.

When you rarely win it would be naive not to be looking over your shoulder and worrying.

Title: Re: Wigan Athletic v Aston Villa Match Thread

But genuinely, I wouldn't normally say that - but this time, we're being outplayed by Wigan who are rooted at the bottom of the league.

The one saving grace is that Given hasn't had to make a save yet.

But this is a pathetic game and we are devoid of creativity, devoid of ideas, devoid of any style - we're not even creating chances. It looks like we're playing for the 0-0 and sometime needs to change on this. This game is the worst example I've seen this season. But it's not only that - it's been like it since we beat Chelsea. Why McLeish decided to change the winning team after that, I have no idea... But it has proved to be tactically inept.

So now then, make me eat my words and go on and win this game.

I'm clinging to the tiny possibility that Lerner actually cares and is prepared to do the right thing, right now.

Won't happen, but it should...

I honestly think he's going to get a very unpleasant shock when they start ringing around for season ticket renewals.

A turgid comedy of errors from two shit teams is how I'd sum this up.

Awful, truly awful.

I bet those who weren't giving Houllier a fair crack of the whip feel pretty foolish right now. In fact, what of the endless drones of people who were saying "MON Out!"

We're a spoiled and impatient bunch we are.

That's because Randy doesn't seem to give a shit about anything beyond getting the wage bill down.

Anyone who thinks there is no chance of us going down this season is kidding themselves.

If there was any indication that the direction we were moving was forward (even tiny steps) then most would accept the current financial strategy. Now, I'm literally petrified at what is around the corner, assuming we survive. He'll get at least one more year as reward for doing as the board has asked.
