1-1, Bent with our goal.

We always seem to win up there but less confident this time as I'm going!

How far is the train station from the town centre and ground folks?

Someone on the other channel said it was about a 30 min walk back to the train station.

I'm going 1-2 for us. Anything other than a win is unacceptable at this stage.

Fail to win this and we may as well pack it in and regroup for a promotion push next season.
We have better players than them, do we have a better team though ?
I'll go for a 2-1 win for us while keeping my fingers firmly crossed till they turn blue...sorry not blue, claret.

If we are going to win, I suspect your prediction is likely to be pretty accurate - we won't do it via a routine, unscary, routine 2 goal margin, we'll do it after inflicting an afternoon of torture on every one of our supporters

Absolutely. If we cannot get a healthy smattering of points in them (at least 7 or 8) then it is a big cause for concern.

Very true.

However, all these games are winnable and we need to get some points on the board.  I wouldn't say "10 points or he goes" or anything like that, but we certainly need to use these games to put any relegation fears to bed.

Why does McLeish have to go if we don't win the next 4!!? Bent has been missing some glorious chances, not McLeish! Dunne, Warnock and Hutton have made cock up after cock up, not McLeish!

Anyway, I see us starting slowly then creating 2 gilt-edged opportunities and missing them for Wigan to pop up the other end and score. We manage to equalise in the 41st minute and come out the second half bombarding Wigans goal, scoring another 2. Its 3-1 and we're cruising but Wigan capitalise on a Warnock wobbler and manage to put the pressure on until the dying seconds and we manage to survive with a 3-2 away win.

Keane, Bent and N'Zogbia
Title: Re: Wigan Athletic v Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread
Post by: andrew08 on February 20, 2012, 11:36:18 AM
In the absence of any kind of rallying call from the club, it would be good if as a group of fans we could just get behind the team for the next 4 games, although I have no doubt a slightly boozed up away support will get behind the boys for the next two games at least, as they usually do.

No negative thinking, no hidden agendas, just pure unadulterated Villa support. A Villa love fest. These players are just temporary custodians of the shirts, this is OUR club let's support it now when it needs it.

Lets get the points on board and have the debate after when we're safe.

It's a big game so it's Gabby time. 3-1 Villa

According to Physioroom (http://www.physioroom.com/news/english_premier_league/epl_injury_table.php) Ciaran Clark is out til April, so it looks like Cuellar and Collins at the back - got to hope neither pick up injuries or suspension anytime soon. Gabby may be doubtful as well - if so let's hope he plays N'Zogbia rather than Heskey

Fairly confident about this one; think we'll nick it, 2-1.

I'd pick: Given; Hutton, Collins, Cuellar, Lichaj; Albrighton, Petrov, Gardner, N'Zogbia; Keane; Bent.
Subs: Guzan, Warnock, Baker, Herd, Agonlahor, Ireland, Weimann.

Is this Villa team up for a dogfight? Has it got the resilience to grind games out? Do the likes of Dunne and Warnock have neough respect for the fans and the club to dig deep and deliver the key results?

If yes, we'll win on Saturday and the next few games; if not, we're knacked for the season.

This will be Robbie's last game. He will make all the difference I sense, if the midfield pass the ball to him! I hate to think of him going at this stage; he has done a superlative job. His short stay seems to have gone in no time. Make Saturday count and assure him we'll have him back for the start of next season. I hope that obvious message has gotten through to the board! I dearly hope the management's recent visit to America was, in part, to negotiate his release from LA Galaxy.

I'd also say in these 4 home games, the one thing McLeish must do is win the two home games we've got, Fulham and whenever the Bolton game is played.

The home form is already unacceptable and if McLeish can't inspire us to victories against two of the prem's worst away teams, they'll be mutiny from the Holte End.

Win, 3pts, its the only acceptable option, Wigan have to be nailed on relegation fodder, wasn't it this lot that put Blues down last season when they survived, not that, that would bother me, point is they have been bumbling along the bottom for yonks.

3-3

you'd never know it.

All out attack, forget defense. Whatever McLeish is thinking up in that head, I'd recommend he go with the complete opposite. I hope he doesn't overthink this match. Put the big guns out there; Bent, Gabby, Keane, N'Zogbia, Ireland and Marc.. forget chemistry and defensive tracking. Score 10 goals, don't worry about a thing. Offense is the best defense for this game. Relentless attack.

3-1 the villa.

A game we should win

however I think Roberto Martinez will wind his side up to show Villa what we are missing

And AM will try not to lose so as to show the board what they have missed out on

a 1 - 1 draw it is then

I also think 1-1 is probably the way it will end up and for me a draw is not the disaster that some are making it out to be, Bolton Wolves and Blackburn have very difficult fixtures that day so we could well open up another point on those teams which is vital in our present situation.

Hope so - think we've missed him big time. According to Physioroom (http://www.physioroom.com/news/english_premier_league/epl_injury_table.php) he's due back this Saturday. Only worry is I thought he was out with a heel injury initially so if he's picked up a hamstring injury may be subject to a late fitness test?

Not sure on that.

Big fan of Gabby but he was the one I was advocating droppingjust before he got injured. I think the Ireland...N'zogbia....Keane....Bent foursome has functioned quite well bar the Man. City game when two of those players weren't there and I don't think Gabby would've made much difference in that game.

Have him on the bench ready to bring on at 70 minutes.

Not too sure that I agree that we need Gabby that badly, I think I'd rather see Albrighton or Zog on the wing instead of rushing him back; we'd probably do better to have him on the bench as an impact player when we are inevitably struggling to get a firm grip of the game mid-way through the second half. I reckon we could really use Herd holding in midfield, though he's been out for a while with that injury and we could really do with having him fit for a while.

Aston Villa welcome Gabriel Agbonlahor back for their match against Wigan.

The striker has been out with back and hamstring problems, which have led him to miss Villa's last three matches.

Chris Herd could also be involved after coming through an hour in a reserve match unscathed. The midfielder has been out for around two and a half months with ankle ligament damage.

My challenge would then be: how many kids will McL be prepared to play in the remaining games in order to get them either up to pace for next season or out of the door?
If we get to a points-position where we can do that, it would be the best thing for all concerned.

On the face of it a forgettable game, however due to the significance in a good few area'a, massive game.

Can't see anything other than a solid win, take the point that Wigan are fighting for there lives and if they can't do it against Villa then they may as well start building for life in the Championship, that said, every time I've looked at them this season on the box they look about Championship standard.

Real test for Villa and a draw simply won't do, hope the Gabbs is back, we look like a damp squid without him, Villa without Gabby Agbonlahor simply isn't Villa IMO.

C'mon you Villa boys!!!!.

Merse said 'Villa will play 9 behind the ball, and just wait' sums up how depressing we are at the moment. If Mcleish realised we just want to try and attack rather than play this turgid crap, we'd improve, crowds would improve and the whole mood of the club would lift. You can talk about lack of money all you want and there is truth in that, but it's the approach of Mcleish's play that is killing us.

Apart from the full backs, good selection.
