The #11 was Frank Pimblett I think his name was.
-
And Hugh Johns always makes me think of Sunday dinner when I was a kid.

He ended up in Brisbane:

That's a cracking find. Well done. Right now, I can smell mum's roast beef dinner being got out of the oven and hear dad coming back in from the pub.
Villa didn't actually feature that often on Star soccer as I recollect, as it was more East Midland centric in those days, I have tried not very successfully to find more coverage from this era.
-
Like many others this brings back such memories.
That team had such boyhood heroes - Chico, Deehan, Graydon, Ian Ross etc etc and John Robson should have been on Greenhof instead of just watching the second goal go in!
Anyone remember "Pejic you are ugleeeeeeeeee" - we even sang it when he cam over to us as I recall (?)

Yes. Star Soccer with Huge Ones and Sunday dinner went together. I think it used to start at about 2pm ? Very often they would go to Filbert St, The City Ground and of course The Baseball Ground as Cloughs Derby were often the top team then. Star Soccer was your Sunday football diet as there wouldn't be live games that day. Across the country football was played on Saturdays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and at Tranmere on Fridays. That was pretty well it unless there were fixture pile ups or long running cup sagas with 2nd/3rd replays.
That was our first season back in Division One after an absence of 8 years, we finished a respectable 16th and our home average crowd was not far short of 39,000. During the next few seasons we progressed and.................well I dont need to tell that bit of the story.

And the Golden Shot too at my grandma's house in Wylde Green....Bernie, the bolt please!

Didnt win one away game that season if I remember correctly, but had a few beers today and could be talking tosh.

No, that is my recollection too. Fantastic to see games from this era again, I was the only Villa fan in the whole of my school in Harrogate and used to pretend to be Ray Graydon in the lunchtime knockabouts. So many great things about that clip - a fantastic atmosphere, no replays ad nauseum from every angle, no experts commenting on every bloody foul or alleged hand ball, no sponsorship, goalies in plain green tops, a classic kit, jumpers for goalposts...
-
The goalie for Villa was a nutter though ;D. Remember reading Andy Grays book, he signed at same time as Budgie and stayed with him at the start. Budgie made him throw oranges at random times of the evening just to test his reflexes lol
-
Im sure he saved a pen in the league cup semi final which took it to a replay where he who walked on water scored a hat trick at highbury
:D
-
QPR, you are quite correct. Great shot stopper to be fair, think e was still playing at 44. Loved his football.
-
I noticed that highlight starts with Stoke taking a long throw in .... Nothing changes.
Good to see Gidman winging down the right and Deehan dominating in the air. No one survived from this team 5 year later!
-
John Deehan presented me with player of the year trophy in 1976, was 12 (me not him). John Gidman was great player, jFrank Carrodus was great for him though as well

Not too sure about that. I can remember a few times in the late 80s at away matches where there'd be two or three hundred of us at most.

Was it Torquay who used to play on Saturday evening for some reason?

Fair point but that was when attendances in general bottomed out. Overall we have always had a very good away following
-
The dulcet tones of Hugh Johns voice reminds me as well of the smell of Sunday dinner- there must be 1000s of us!
Not forgetting his catchphrases of "One nothing" or "Andy Gray/Cyrille Regis/Bob Latchford or whoever- "Opens his account" after scoring.
-
For those who what to be nostalgic or for those who havent got a clue what we're on about
Sorry I couldn't find one with Villa included

I was at this game. The highlight footage doesn't do justice as to how good Shilton was on the day for them. He was immense.
Stoke fans, or rather, some juvenile delinquents attacked our coach with fists and feet after the game. Nothing strange in that at the time you might think, except on this occasion, the coach was moving.

My first non local away game was Stoke. I'm sure it wasn't this one though. It was during the balloons era and Shilton saved a pen. They'd just had the roof blown off their stand, why I remember that I dunno.

Aye, I was at this one as a young 9 yr old as well, I went with my Mum and Dad. God knows why Mum was there though, she is an Albion season ticket holder.
This was pretty much my first non local away game as well, apart from when I had a couple of years living in Hampshire and saw us at Fulham and although I haven't watched the clip with sound on or all the way through as at work, I am sure that there were thousands of Villa there that day and it WAS in the balloon craze. I'm believe Mortimer signed at Christmas this season and his debut in front of 51k at Villa Park vs West Ham was with a "million" balloons flying everywhere.
It shows how the memory plays tricks though, as I was convinced that "Chico" scored our goal, only to see it was Graydon.
As someone mentioned we were brilliant that day against a Stoke team who were top 6 I think. Andy Gray was ruled out on the morning and Dixie Deehan was just outstanding in this match, reckon he was only 18 as well.
Great clip found and brings back happy memories of my favourite Villa era.
UTV !!

Your right there, the only thing that has changed is their stadium.

I remember the Golden Shot well. Yes....."Bernie the bolt..."......oh how I'd laugh..........

I think we dropped into a pub in Trent Vale, expecting no trouble. There were a right bunch in there, all with faces burned to a leathery complexion through years of standing next to kilns or kelns as they call them. Funnily enough, Leighton Phillips came into the Lions Club with Frank Carrodus the other day, great players who took us through those transitional years.

I love the old videos, thanks for posting!
