Thanks Barneboy for getting the side up on both threads.

Heskey for Ireland in a midfield with Petrov and Gardner? Fuck me. It is beyond a joke.

No Herd, Clark. Worrying afternoon ahead.

5-1 to them.

One thing I will say is that if today goes badly, the presence of Heskey from the start is going to make the backlash even worse.

Oh FFS.
I am in disbelief that Heskey is starting.
It's gonna be hard enough with 11 men but with 10 it's going to be a slaughtering.

It's good to see Gardner starting, but Heskey instead of Ireland? And I see Collins made it back comfortably. Didn't McLeish say Baker could play left back? Back to hoof again.

Here's a scary fact - If we lose today (which I'm afraid we will with this lineup) we'll be 7 points away from Norwich and 7 points away from the relegation zone. You're doing a good job McLeish.  ???

Title: Re: Aston Villa v Manchester City Match Thread

It is a completely idiotic decision; steps in the right direction right up until the first sub against Newcastle last week. Since which mad decisions have become the norm it would appear. Complete and total insanity. He deserves all the chants of you don't know what your doing if we are tonked today, especially after not getting a midfield player into the club in January when we had lost Jenas etc.

Oh dear god! What a shit team. McLeish hasn't got a bloody clue! Heskey starting again! Why? What reason? What does he offer? I just cannot give any backing to this clueless idiot, when he makes decisions like that.
Who plays left back? Hutton or Cueller? Either way, not good. Hutton can barely keep himself in position at right back. Carlos played left back under O Neill for a couple of games and was woeful.

We'll get pillocked right royally I'm afraid lads. We should be playing 3 across the middle. We need an extra bad in there because it's too much pressure on an aging Stan and an inexperienced GG.

McLeish out! Is that his way of getting back at the protestors? If so, good job because it's pissing annoying mate! Bring back O Leary! Yeah I said it!

If he's set us up to lose by as few as possible like he did earlier in the season he should just go. We should be going for it with our most creative players N'Zog and Ireland.

I suspect McLeish values Heskey more than the fans do. I fear a contract extension in the summer.

Title: Re: Aston Villa v Manchester City Match Thread
Post by: Compass on February 12, 2012, 03:29:47 PM
We deserve to lose by that lineup. It's anti-football. You don't start old man Heskey out of position over Ireland or N'Zogbia. Basically what McLeish is doing is he's putting his own personal problems before the club.

I can only think he's trying to confuse Man City by picking the strangest team he could think of. At 6pm he will either be a genius or a step closer to being declared insane!
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Manchester City Match Thread

I have come to the conclusion that Heskey must have it written into his contract that if fit he must be in the side. Can not be any other reason how he is selected .

You never know, it might work!

I'm going to wait until quarter to six before making a judgement on it being a mistake but I think that it is a somewhat strange selection.

Post by: Toronto Villa on February 12, 2012, 03:37:05 PM
I have nothing personally against Heskey, but I've said before, I'll be glad when we as fans never have to discuss him again because he's no longer part of our club. I was scared that he'd be part of the line up today, mostly because it makes us play a certain way. It's going to be hard enough today and even more so if we just launch the ball up to Heskey all game. You give the ball to Man City they'll kill you. We give the ball away too much without Heskey and even more afraid of that today.

Heskey is the least physical big man I've ever seen.

Honestly, if we feel the need to field a non-scoring striker in midfield, then we really are a bit of a mess.

Our two most creative players on the bench; a horrible, unbalanced back four and Heskey included where - left midfield? The kind of selection from McLeish that I've come to fear and which makes me question, again, his understanding of the game.

We've taken two big steps back today, in my opinion. Could be an 'interesting' afternoon.

The only way to counter the top teams is to close space and try to keep the ball, if we had another midfielder instead of Heskey it might work, madness

N'Zogbia has physical attributes and got an assist in the Newcastle game. Before that he got a goal against QPR. Are you saying Heskey is better option than N'Zogbia in midfield?  ;D

I just am staggered he's picked Heskey, I genuinely can't fathom it.

The plain facts are; that Heskey does as he's told. Ireland and N'zog do not. They were both faulted by McLeish for not tackling back and shutting down the flanks to prevent crosses from coming into the box. Then told the manager to f@ck off.
Both were substituted so it's no surprise to me that they now find themselves on the bench.

How exactly is Emile Bastard Heskey going to counter Man City's physical style of play? Is he going to aggressively fall over in their general direction?

When was the last time he contributed anything at all?

Mind you, McLeish has clearly got big balls.

15th in the league going into this match, not won at home since bonfire night, and he's shaping up with a Tottenham away style line up. He must really believe in what he's doing to be risking that.

I agree this reminds me of the spurs line up. Maybe not quite so uncultured, but I'd be surprised if we manage 5 consecutive passes in the first half except for around the back 4 and then back to the keeper to hoof it.

I can't believe Ireland isn't starting

I know, but my point is that while you could suggest that he did stem things to a certain extent, we were most threatening without him on the pitch.

There's no point just trying to stop Man City, we're going to have to have a go at them, and I can't see how Heskey anywhere on the pitch, let alone in midfield, is going to do that.

McLeish will get a lot more support if he's prepared to do that, and we did for a while, but he is now sloping back to bad habits.

Bewildering.

The stupid thing is, we had a go at Arsenal, and despite losing - incredibly unjustly - we rightly got applauded off the pitch.

It's all very well for people (and the media) to bang on about how he used to manage Blues / we shouldn't boo yada yada yada, but the fact is, if we have a go at people when we can, he'll get people behind him.

From the SkySports score centre text feed:

"the mcleish protest turned into a low-key affair, attended by no more than 100 fans. There were a few banners such as "Had your chance McLeish Out", and a few chants among the lines of "You'll be sacked in the morning", but it was ultimately more for amusement value of other Villa fans looking on."

So, it turned out exactly as we all expected.

So far this has been a training exercise for Man City. I'm very disappointed that given that we do have attacking players in the squad that we haven't tried to put their back line under pressure. We are simply not quick enough to player effective counter attack. This has all of the hallmarks of a depressing defeat about it. We a tempting fate with every Man City attack.

I watched the games versus the 'noses again the other day. The one whe we spanked them 5-1. I realized that one of the biggest thing we are missing now are heroes and characters. We had Barry, Ash and Gabby, a talisman like Carew, and at the back massively influential players like Laursen and Mellberg. We have Bent now, but he's so laid back and Keane isn't ours. As fans we need heroes and we are really struggling for that right now at the club.

Gary Neville.

Of course we have attacking options.

The fact Heskey is in midfield whilst Stephen Ireland and Charles N'Zogbia are on the bench says everything you need to know about McLeish, and if the media took the fucking blinkers off for a few moments, they might realise that that, and not his Small Heath connections, is why the guy is short of support.

Heskey is doing what he's been asked to do and isn't doing it badly. Too easy a target these days I'm afraid for people who need to stick the boot in somewhere. If you don't want him in the starting line up blame McLeish, but when he's doing ok leave the bugger alone.

They are better than us all over the park but haven't scored yet. We need to hold onto the ball more as a team and I would change the shape a bit.

One thing I'll give Steve Kean a lot of credit for is that he has given it a go in every game and has been given far less support by the fans than McLeish. Christ, that wasn't too inspiring.

I have no idea what the plan there was, although I suppose if it was 'don't concede' then, somehow, we've managed it. If it was more ambitious than that (and I sincerely hope it was) then it really hasn't worked at all and I really hope hope hope that McLeish will change it around at HT.

The likes of Albrighton have done that much chasing back that every time they have had the ball at their feet they look completely shagged.

Well that was a bit shit. Lucky to be in the game. Glad that City aren't at the top of their game.

Some observations:

Albrighton on the left and Heskey on the right are there obviously to protect Cuellar and Hutton. Is it worth it? Petrov and Gardner got overran by sometimes even 4 vs. them two. Positive attacking contributions from Albrighton & Heskey <2. Didn't see any, but just to be sure.

Bent and Keane up front: why? Is it living up to the fetish "have to play two up front at home". That's load of bollocks. I wish Keane would play more in the hole. Maybe he's been there but I've missed it because of the hoofing that's going on.

I'd throw in Ireland is eager and smart in closing the players down. Always dangerous on the ball. Keeps possession. Get Clark in to strengthen the middle and help us keep possession. Sub Heskey and Albrighton.

So the formation would be not diamond 442, but a 41311/451 with a narrow + fluid "plus five" in the middle.

              Bent
             Keane
Gardner Petrov Ireland
              Clark
Cuellar Dunne Collins Hutton

Edit: maybe Gardner could be replaced with THE NZOG.

Dante, I think I can safely say we all support the club but watching such negative tactics is frustrating. If we had a go at Man Citeh but ended up losing then it would soften the blow and most would accept it and say at least we had a go. The tactics today and against Spurs are exactly what those rationally against McLeish because of his perceived style were concerned about. I honestly believed that with much better players that he'd play to those strengths. He has very rarely done that and that is losing support from the less emotional fans.

Strip everything away and people pay to go to football matches to be entertained. They will cheer an exciting and exhilarating defeat like against Arsenal, but paying for this shit is unacceptable.

I came out of the Arsenal game absolutely buzzing. I wasn't even too bothered that we'd lost, I was buzzing because we'd played some very good football and really had a go at them.

Exactly, and this is just appalling and a short sighted approach.

We're a soft goal away from zero points here. The chances of it not happening are slim. Give it a go ffs.

Dante, I think I can safely say we all support the club but watching such negative tactics is frustrating. If we had a go at Man Citeh but ended up losing then it would soften the blow and most would accept it and say at least we had a go. The negativity we are seeing week in week out is what is driving us nuts especially when we have a defence so regularly gifting goals to the opposition.

Exactly. Look at the reaction after the arsenal game. We actually tried to play football even if we lost. And that positive performance carried on to the Chelsea game.

I apologies to you (and all).  I did not see the first half so was commenting in the score rather than the performance.  I assumed that people were taking the knee jerk reaction of moaning because Heskey was in the team rather than what was actually happening.  I trust it has been as bad as you guys have said.

Positives.. we haven't conceded, and we haven't really came close to conceding.

Assuming we become a better attacking side in the second half (as we can't possibly be worse), things are looking okay.

I think that sums up the tactics in this match. They have a throw in in line with the 18 yard box. We have all 11 players in the final third and they still have three back on the halfway line. So any clearance comes straight back.

You play for a 0-0 at home, 10 men behind the ball from the start, zero ambition then...you get what you deserve. Nothing. Zombie football.

Evidently McLeish learned nothing from Everton's attitude and intent in their recent win against City. Evidently Villa should be honoured to be sharing a pitch with the Manc millionaires. What a fucking tragedy.

What is the point of AVFC circa 2012?

Liverpool, Man U and Man City at home have been the three most inept displays I have seen at home in about 10 years. Even more worrying, Swansea and others were just as bad.

I thought he had turned a corner just before Christmas, then we won at Chelsea, and we looked like we could pick some points up.

Now he is regressing, right at the wrong time. We are in deep, deep trouble.

That's it for me. I'm not sticking up for McLeish again.

He dug his own fucking grave today.

im with you .    the bloke has not got a clue

Totally. I stuck up for him the other day saying he'd apparently  learned from his mistakes and was at least trying to go for it a bit.  Then he goes and reverts to type and gives us a repeat of Spurs/ Man Yoo/ Liverpool.   The man is an idiot.

Even if we score, even if we somehow win I have made up my mind. He made it harder than he need have. He went into this game with a strategy that was going to make fans puke, players nervous and invite one of the best sides in the league onto us until they scored.

Don't forget how poor that stat is. 3% of the play in Man City's third includes Man City being in possession. We haven't pressed them back when their defence has had the ball, meaning their centre backs can start passing from the halfway line, giving them a huge territorial advantage. It's just basic.

About the same as it was under O'Leary/Ellis. The results, the approach we take to games (surrendering before they even start), it looks exactly the same.

Proud history, no future.

Did we honestly expect anything different today, he played for a draw by holding out as long as possible, he did the same against Spurs and Man United, he puts out a team with far too much respect for the opposition in the hope we don't get hammered to dent the confidence further.

Go fuck yourself McLeish you moron. You have zero backbone and you're afraid to try and win a football game at HOME.

What an embarrassing, negative performance.

IF YOU THINK A DRAW WAS THE BEST CHANCE OF US GETTING A RESULT WHY DO YOU THINK MAN CITY RAPING US ALL OVER THE FIELD IS THE BEST WAY TO GET A RESULT? THEY HAVE CAMPED IN OUR HALF THROUGHOUT THE DURATION OF THE GAME AND YET YOU HAVENT DONE ANYTHING ABOUT IT. WHY ARE YOU PLAYING HESKEY IN MIDFIELD? WHY ISN'T N'ZOGBIA OR IRELAND NOT PLAYING?

Keeping the oppo under pressure when not in possession is something that NU, Everton and Swansea have done really well this season, and it's something we don't seem to think is worth doing. It's basic stuff but we don't do it. Which is why the defence always seems so deep.
